By Mandi McReynolds, Head of Global ESG

A recent Workiva survey has revealed that a majority of senior decision makers surveyed have noted a positive correlation between their ESG practices and tangible business value.

While the idea of building corporate value through ESG isn’t new, the path to success in this area isn’t always clear.

During a panel discussion organised by the Financial Times in partnership with Workiva titled ‘The Future of ESG and Sustainability Reporting’, I argued that “it all comes down to values translating to value.” But how does this work in practice?

Where ESG and value creation come together

When considering the link between ESG and value creation, the incentives and pressures brought in by governments and external stakeholders may be the first things to come to mind.

As expectations and regulations rise, the immediate benefits of keeping up soon become apparent—both in the form of ‘carrots’ like ESG-linked executive compensation schemes, and ‘sticks’ such as potential penalties from regulators  or limited access to capital financial institutions or customers..

Although these considerations are crucial, focusing exclusively on external, shorter-term motivators and detractors fails to dive deeper into the true purpose and complexity of ESG, thereby limiting the potential for greater growth and value creation over a much longer period of time. The relationship between ESG and financial success is multi-layered, requiring a more holistic view in order to be fully harnessed.

If done correctly, ESG strategies can help companies increase their value in a number of key areas, including:

Top-line growthLower costsAlignment with governmental initiativesTalent retentionReturn on company investmentsStronger risk management practices

While these are all potential areas for value creation through sound ESG practices, not each of these will be equally important for every company. To stand out, business leaders need to determine specific areas of focus that make sense for their company.

‘Values’: a question of materiality

This brings us to the idea of ‘values’.

It’s worth unpacking what is meant in this context. In a politically and socially divided world, the term—which carries with it implications of a shared moral code—can feel loaded.

To some extent, it’s undeniable that ESG initiatives on a global scale follow a particular ethical framework (regarding, for instance, human rights or environmental sustainability). But while companies are obliged to follow certain standards in how they operate and report, they are not being asked to single-handedly address and solve all of the world’s problems—a common misinterpretation of ESG that can lead to disjointed initiatives, a ‘scattergun’ approach of trying to address everything at once, or even accusations of greenwashing.

The purpose of ESG is to enable company stakeholders to make sound, informed decisions that take into account the wider environmental and social context within which the company is operating. The idea of ‘values’ in this context therefore relates more closely to a shared company mission and questions of materiality.

Of course, being seen to make a positive impact on the world is becoming a highly material question for many organisations. Consumers, stakeholders and governments are expecting more from corporations, and these expectations need to be taken into account. However, standalone ‘feel good’ initiatives which are divorced from the bread and butter of the organisation are more likely to be ineffective, or even do real damage, than to provide tangible benefits.

To build real value for the business, the focus of an ESG strategy needs to be closely tied to the company’s daily activities, taking into account its particular circumstances alongside its existing strengths and resources. While a multinational food distributor, for instance, may wish to leverage new technologies for tracking the journey and carbon footprint of individual items of food, a consultancy might choose to focus their efforts on adopting innovative solutions for measuring the happiness and wellbeing of their staff.

Determine your purpose, then tell your story

The final—and perhaps most crucial—piece of the puzzle is the ability to communicate the information in a transparent, consistent and reliable manner, underpinned by verified and verifiable data.

While the CSRD comes into play in Europe, the SEC begins to introduce new disclosure requirements and mandatory ESG reporting looms on the horizon throughout the world, this level of rigour and transparency will soon become a baseline requirement. Having ready access to reliable data is essential, but organisations also need to understand why they’re in the data and what story they’re telling. By having established a purpose and area of focus underpinned by shared organisational values, leaders will be able to tell a compelling ESG story that has clear meaning and direction in a way that both showcases and increases the value of the organisation.

DES MOINES, Iowa, February 28, 2023 /3BL Media/ — Principal Financial Group® was featured in the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI), achieving the highest scores in the industry across all eight categories on progress toward gender equality. Of the 153 companies in the financial sector featured in the GEI, Principal® scored higher in seven of the eight categories.

“Gender equality is an integral part of our global inclusion efforts within our organization and the customers we serve,” said Miriam Lewis, chief inclusion officer at Principal. “The recognition of Principal in the 2023 Bloomberg GEI is a testament to the dedication and progression we’ve made towards gender equality through an environment of inclusivity, collaboration, and diversity.”

Principal is committed to ensuring gender equality in all levels of the organization through increased representation and equity practices for women in the workforce. In 2021, Principal released its sustainability report, which highlighted its efforts in gender equality, reporting that out of its total workforce, 54% are women and 42% of women are in the executive management group.

Bloomberg’s GEI analyzed five key pillars on how public companies are performing and progressing toward gender equality for women including: leadership and talent pipeline, equal pay and gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies, and external brand. A total of 620 companies were examined for the GEI with only 484 companies from 11 sectors across 45 countries and regions making the minimum index threshold.

The GEI helps track the performance of targeted public companies committed to transparency in gender-data reporting. Since its inception in 2015, the goal of the Bloomberg Gender Reporting Framework has been to increase visibility into the social component of sustainability programs and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting practices within organizations. According to the GEI, investors continue to focus on understanding insights using ESG data to help with their decision-making as they focus on issues such as financial materiality.

Families in need in El Paso, Texas, will continue having access to special monthly food distributions throughout 2023 at Marathon Petroleum’s local refinery. The refinery has renewed its partnership with the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank to host the three-hour events on the last Friday of every month.Along with the refinery’s financial support of the distributions, employee volunteers help load food into the vehicles of recipients.

An average of about 350 families in need have been getting food every month for the past two years at Marathon Petroleum’s El Paso, Texas, refinery through the site’s partnership with the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger (EPFH) Food Bank. These free monthly distribution events at the facility will continue in 2023 as part of the refinery’s renewed financial support of the food bank for another year.

“Our plant has a long history in El Paso, and many of our employees have deep local ties here, so we feel a strong sense of responsibility to respond to critical needs in this community,” said El Paso Refinery General Manager Travis Beltz.

A $50,000 grant to EPFH will fund distributions on the last Friday of every month. Employee volunteers from the refinery will also help unpack, sort and hand out food during the three-hour events as they have done since 2021. Additionally, the food bank continues to benefit from using a refrigerated semi-truck the refinery previously purchased for the organization to help transport food in the local area.

“Our employees want to be active in the community to serve others through hands-on efforts,” Human Resources Manager Ian Sparkman said. “Hosting these food distributions at our site makes it easier for more employees to be involved, increasing our ability to make a difference.”

In 2022, refinery volunteers distributed approximately 450,000 pounds of food to families in need.

According to recent results from GoDaddy’s Venture Forward research initiative, Black microbusiness owners are among the most likely to start a business as a way to support their community. Because entrepreneurship creates jobs and raises income levels for the business owner and the broader community, it makes sense that Black microbusiness owners are particularly motivated to use entrepreneurship to drive change. With Black entrepreneurs among those expressing the most optimism about the future of their businesses, it’s hard not to feel energized by their passion, hard work and dedication to creating success.

To celebrate Black History Month, GoDaddy asked four of its customers to record their advice for future Black entrepreneurs. Inspired by the idea of writing a letter to one’s future self, the project intends to help motivate Black entrepreneurs to write the next chapter of Black-owned business history.

Each of the customers’ advice came to life in video form and offered inspiration to those who’ve started or are looking to start their own business.

Malik and April Muhammad of Malik Books focused their advice on being the next generation of change: “Change your thoughts, change your life, be the change!”

Davina Thomas and Yudu Gray Jr. of 247 Artists encouraged Black entrepreneurs to “Trust yourself and be confident.”

Anthony Stanberry of Freeze DNA, a children’s comic book publishing company based in Ontario, Canada, offered superhero-inspired advice: “Be brave, be bold, be courageous, be a leader. We know you’ll be victorious.”

Rebecca Gibson of Empire Beauty Bar focused her advice on surrounding yourself with the right people: “Your network will build the next chapter of Black-owned business history.”

As Black History Month comes to a close, it’s important to elevate Black voices now and year-round. GoDaddy is proud to support its more than 21 million customers as part of its mission to make opportunity more inclusive for all. LINCOLN, Neb., February 28, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Over the next two years, MetLife Foundation will support Arbor Day Foundation planting projects in forests and communities of greatest need in Europe. Beginning in 2023, over 100,000 trees will be planted across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The partnership aims to increase the resiliency of these areas to the effects of climate change.

“The climate crisis is a shared global problem, one that’s going to take a strategic, collective effort to solve,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The world needs trees now more than ever, and organizations like MetLife Foundation are stepping up alongside other sustainability leaders in the public and private sector to turn conversations into meaningful action.”

For the past 50 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has helped to plant nearly 500 million trees in forests and communities around the world. Through a global network of partnerships, the Arbor Day Foundation facilitates projects that empower organizations of all sizes to reach their sustainability goals via measurable, impactful work through trees and forests. The Foundation recently announced an initiative to plant 500 million trees by June 2027 in forests and communities that need them most.

This work has been guided by the principles laid out through the MetLife Foundation’s 10-year, $10 million commitment to environmental causes and is aligned to its resilient communities portfolio, which provides support for projects that positively impact environmental causes. To date, MetLife Foundation has supported efforts to plant and distribute nearly 450,000 trees alongside the Arbor Day Foundation.

“In addition to providing a natural solution for many universal issues, planting trees is one of the best ways to increase environmental stewardship among a global community,” said Nuria Garcia, regional president, MetLife EMEA and MetLife Foundation board member. “Protecting our most vulnerable communities and providing them with the tools they need to persevere through disaster is at the core of what we’ve been doing as an organization for more than 150 years. Our ongoing approach towards climate action and sustainability includes a comprehensive agenda of environmental, health, and safety considerations that serve as our guiding principles in operating as a responsible corporate citizen.”

LINCOLN, Neb., February 27, 2023 /3BL Media/ – A tree planting event was held on February 24 and 25 to honor John Lewis’ legacy and add to the flowering forest that is growing in his memory in Atlanta, Georgia. Trees Atlanta, along with other Atlanta-based organizations, hosted the annual community planting event with support from the Arbor Day Foundation and its corporate partners International Paper, UPS, and WestRock.

“We are grateful to have been a part of this event honoring Representative Lewis and are inspired by the passion and commitment of our long-time planting partner, Trees Atlanta,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Community projects like this help the Arbor Day Foundation bring our mission to life and remind us just how essential trees are to the beauty, health, and prosperity of cities and towns around the world.”

The annual planting event was started in 2021 when the first 300 trees were planted in Freedom Park. Each year, community members can sign up to volunteer to help plant flowering trees and shrubs along the John Lewis Freedom Parkway in Atlanta. The native tree species that were planted were specifically chosen to bloom in late winter to celebrate the late Civil Rights leader’s birthday and add color along the parkway as a welcome to Spring.

“Hundreds of people from many communities help to plant and nurture the Flowering Forest. This collaborative effort is a beautiful example of Congressman Lewis’s belief that committed and determined people make a difference by working together,” said Greg Levine, co-executive director and chief program officer of Trees Atlanta. Trees Atlanta is a member organization of the Alliance for Communities Trees through the Arbor Day Foundation.

The invitation to participate in the first EIC competition will be from March 1st to March 20th, 2023 at https://www.EICLaRed.org/ for organizations that develop activities aimed at empowering micro, small and medium-sized enterprises led by women in 10 Latin American countries.

Qualified Organizations that wish to apply must be from the following countries: Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The sectors targeted by the competition range from agriculture, fishing, sustainable tourism, creative services technologies, light and small manufacturing, as well as textiles. The participating projects must focus on generating local solutions that support green and blue economies with a focus on vulnerable groups, providing training, providing access to capital opportunities, networking, and promoting access to valuable chains in local and international companies.

“The organizations that developed this initiative are planning to launch a series of three challenges that will allow us to select innovative solutions to enhance the development of MSMEs managed by women and that generate more inclusive growth in each of the participating countries,” said Ernesto Samayoa, Project Director of WEC Latin America.

The participating projects may come from civil society organizations, educational institutions, centers focused on the development of small business, organizations dedicated to implementing and promoting cleaner production, and the private sector in general. The challenges will generate alliances with chambers, trade associations, and different representative institutions from each country to make the process more transparent. Three EICs will be held each year starting in 2023 to select up to 24 winners. Winners will receive non-reimbursable funds of up to a maximum of US$50,000 per project and will also have the opportunity to become members of the La RED de Innovación e Impacto network.
