Recent record-setting inflation has made the cost of everyday essentials like food, gas, and utility bills higher than ever. Paired with the skyrocketing cost of housing, limited availability of affordable homes, and increasingly severe and disruptive weather events, many individuals and families around the world are faced with impossible living situations. When natural or man-made disaster strikes, often homes are damaged or destroyed, which can result in especially tragic outcomes for low-income households with limited means to handle extensive and costly repairs or rebuilding.

Changing weather patterns also impact how we live within our homes. According to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the average U.S. household spends nearly $2,000 annually on energy bills, which leads to more greenhouse gas emissions and further climate change. Exorbitant energy-bills or expensive maintenance costs can leave low-income households even more cost burdened, forcing them to forgo necessities like food or medicine to maintain power or heat. They may also keep their homes at unsafe or unhealthy temperatures. A 2020 analysis by the U.S. Energy Information Administration found that 34 million U.S. households faced energy insecurity. Rising energy costs contribute to the financial burden that comes with housing, making affordable housing unattainable for far too many families. As climate change continues to affect weather and intensify disasters, the need for sustainable building practices and climate-resilient homes is becoming increasingly apparent.

At Habitat for Humanity, we know that affordable housing and sustainability go hand in hand. From reducing utility bills through energy-efficient homes to using conscientious building practices, we’re continuously exploring ways to build our homes to benefit families and the environment. With the support of partners like Whirlpool Corporation, we are doing that and much more.

Through the BuildBetter with Whirlpool initiative, Habitat and Whirlpool are actively creating ways to help homeowners mitigate the impacts of climate change. We are building homes that are disaster-resilient and can withstand increasingly severe weather events. We are building homes that are energy-efficient and incorporate features such as solar panels, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, and high-efficiency heating and cooling. And we are building homes at code-plus standards. These measures provide Habitat homeowners the potential to not only save on monthly utility bills, but also the opportunity to live in healthier, more resilient homes. Whirlpool and Habitat have 143 homes in progress through the initiative, which began in June 2021.

During our 22-year partnership, we have made profound impact on the lives of families around the world. Home is so much more than four walls and a roof; it is a sanctuary, a place to make memories, a place for children to grow up healthy and strong.

Whirlpool Corp.’s House + Home initiative reflects their commitment of building homes and improving the communities they serve, while helping families secure brighter, stronger, and healthier futures. Whirlpool shares our vision and mission of creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We are excited and look forward to the future possibilities of our continued partnership.

City Developments Limited (CDL) has published its Integrated Sustainability Report (ISR) 2023, its sixteenth sustainability report since 2008. Themed “Zero in on Positive Impact”, the digital report communicates CDL’s progress towards its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals and targets under the CDL Future Value 2030 Sustainability Blueprint. Aligned with global and local climate goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the blueprint is integral to the company’s business strategies and operations, allowing it to mitigate and adapt to ESG risks and capture growth opportunities.

Complementing its pledge towards Operational Net Zero by 2030, CDL achieved a 24% reduction in carbon emissions intensity in the year under review (January to December 2022) from base-year 2016. The Company has met its interim 2022 target and is on track to achieving its Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-validated target of a 63% reduction by 2030. As part of its renewed SBTi-validated greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets to align with a 1.5°C warmer scenario made in 2021, CDL stepped up on operationalising and tracking its carbon reduction performance for Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. CDL achieved a 10% reduction in total operational carbon emissions across all its business operations in Singapore compared to 2021. CDL also achieved a 22% reduction in embodied carbon emissions compared to the conventional equivalents. From 2012 to 2022, CDL reported energy savings of over S$38 million from energy-efficient retrofitting and initiatives across all its commercial buildings.

Mr Sherman Kwek, CDL Group Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our latest Integrated Sustainability Report reaffirms our commitment to accelerate collective action in the global race to zero. Having embraced sustainability in our business for nearly three decades, we have remained steadfast in achieving a triple bottom line so as to generate positive environmental and social impact while achieving sustained growth for our investors. We will continue advancing our climate action and green building performance to tackle the climate emergency, turning ambition to action.”

Harmonised Two-Pillar Reporting Framework Capturing Value and Impact

CDL has built up a unique blended sustainability reporting framework comprising the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards at its core since 2008, adding CDP since 2010, the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) since 2013, Integrated Reporting Framework since 2015, SDG Reporting since 2016, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework since 2017, SBTi since 2018, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Standards and the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB) Framework since 2020.

CDL supports the formation of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), formed by the IFRS Foundation, in providing a unified sustainability reporting baseline framework to fulfil the needs of investors and various stakeholders for credible, consistent and interoperable data. In March 2022, the IFRS Foundation and GRI signed an MOU, committing the two organisations to further harmonise the sustainability reporting landscape using a two-pillar approach at an international level. In ISR 2023, CDL has combined the nine components of its blended reporting framework into two pillars – capturing ‘value’ and ‘impact’. The ISSB standards, slated to be published in 2023, will require additional disclosures for Scope 3 emissions, along with Scope 1 and 2. Since CDL secured its first set of SBTi-validated GHG reduction targets in 2018, aligning with a 2°C warmer scenario, managing Scope 3 emissions has increasingly become a priority in its carbon management strategy. In 2021, CDL raised the bar and renewed its SBTi-validated targets aligned with a 1.5°C emissions reduction target of 58.8% under Scope 3 (category 15) and will extend this to all major subsidiaries.

CDL’s ESG integration and performance have been affirmed by 14 leading global sustainability rankings and indices, including the 2023 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World by Corporate Knights, in which CDL ranked the world’s top real estate management and development company as well as maintaining its “AAA” MSCI ESG rating since 2010. CDL was the only real estate company in Southeast Asia and the only Singapore company recognised as a 2022 CDP Supplier Engagement Leader for the third consecutive year, placing CDL amongst the top 8% of companies assessed by CDP for supplier engagement on climate change.

In July 2022, CDL emerged as the top Singapore company for its climate-related reporting practices in the Climate Reporting in ASEAN – State of Corporate Practices report published by GRI and the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Governance and Sustainability. The study recognises CDL’s reporting, management of climate risks and opportunities, and alignment with global sustainability frameworks, including TCFD and other climate-risk approaches. CDL was also the only Singapore real estate company recognised in FT-Nikkei-Statista Asia Pacific Climate Leaders 2022.

CDL started the external assurance of its sustainability report in 2009 and has continued to expand its scope. For its latest ISR 2023, CDL is the first Singapore company verified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) for indirect GHG emissions from products used in construction projects in Singapore according to category 4 of the ISO14064-1:2018 standard, enabling CDL to enhance its Scope 3 emissions management.

T-Mobile has long been a participant in the FCC’s spectrum auctions, which the Commission has used for 30 years to rapidly assign licenses. These auctions fuel the U.S. economy—they’ve returned $233 billion to taxpayers so far, and once armed with this spectrum, wireless companies have spent another $635 billion building out networks. American consumers benefit from these investments—they’ve resulted in the world’s best 5G service that is now a platform for innovators and has created millions of jobs.

That’s why Congress must act now to renew the FCC’s spectrum auction authority, which lapsed in March for the first time in 30 years. Without such authority, the FCC can’t auction licenses, and there’s no other practical way to bring more spectrum to market. That’s a massive competitive disadvantage for the United States and a disadvantage for American consumers.

Pumping more spectrum into the marketplace has benefitted Americans with faster and more capable networks that, for example, have allowed T-Mobile to offer home internet service over our 5G network to millions of underserved consumers. As consumer and business demands increase (customers with 5G phones on our Magenta MAX plan now use nearly 40 GBs per month), so does the requirement for more spectrum. The U.S. needs a certain and reliable spectrum pipeline to meet Americans’ current and future needs.

For our part, T-Mobile has been working tirelessly to build and deploy the largest and fastest 5G network with our existing spectrum assets. Mid-band spectrum has given us the gas in the tank to supercharge our 5G network and offer home internet service that is bringing competition to cable. In fact, we are now the fastest growing broadband provider in the U.S. So, when T-Mobile bid on, won and paid over $300 million for licenses in the most recent FCC auction (Auction 108), we made plans to immediately put that spectrum to use for consumers.

But the FCC did not grant our licenses prior to the lapse of auction authority, and they’re now stuck in regulatory limbo. Those licenses support wireless service in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. They will boost speeds and bring mid-band 5G to consumers for the first time in some places. Many of the licenses sold cover rural areas where the spectrum has been dormant, sitting on the shelf at the FCC for nearly 30 years. In cities and suburbs, the licenses will allow us to create more consistent speed and capacity across metro areas.

Even though auction authority has lapsed, we strongly believe the FCC still has the power to issue the licenses from the last auction. After all, the auction finished successfully before the authority lapsed and all that’s left to do is routine processing of licenses from the completed auction. We’re not alone in that view. Four former FCC General Counsels have said the FCC’s power to issue the stranded licenses is “unambiguous.” And regardless, T-Mobile will continue pushing Congress to renew the FCC’s auction authority right away, so we hope this issue becomes moot.

The good news is that the FCC has a backup tool to light up this key mid-band spectrum, bringing more 5G to more Americans. The Commission can grant Special Temporary Authority, or STAs, to allow us to turn on service while Congress finds a path forward on auction authority. The FCC grants STAs to utilize spectrum when extraordinary circumstances exist. We think that a once-in-a-generation lapse of auction authority is extraordinary—and that we have the chance to unlock extraordinary benefits for consumers.

T-Mobile has built out the towers and radios needed to make use of this spectrum in many areas of the country. If we were given STAs today, we could light up many of these markets in a matter of days. That’s right—those radios are deployed and ready to be turned up.  The only thing separating nearly 50 million Americans from enhanced capacity, a huge speed boost, and world-class 5G is the FCC issuing STAs. With the extra spectrum lit up, we’ll even have enough capacity to offer home internet to millions of families, many of whom never have had a choice in broadband providers.

T-Mobile will continue to work with Congress to reinstate the FCC’s auction authority and secure a future spectrum pipeline so that the U.S. remains a global wireless leader for years to come. And we’ll continue advocating for the FCC to use its licensing power to grant us what we won in the last auction. But while we wait for Congress to act, let’s use every tool we have to make the world’s best 5G even better. Our network is ready—let’s get to work.

More than a year after Russia’s initial invasion, Ukrainian people remain at risk. Both those who stayed and were displaced have been forced to find new ways to meet their basic daily needs, like finding safe water.

We are proud to continue our 20-year relationship with Water Mission who is working to provide clean, safe water to those in need.

In conjunction with the FedEx Cares 50 by 50 program – where they set a goal in 2019 to positively impact 50 million people by their 50th birthday on April 17, 2023 – Water Mission, a Christian engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions, has been providing emergency aid to those in Ukraine throughout the conflict.

“We are grateful for groups like Water Mission that help us get drinking water and give us the ability to stay and work to keep our city functioning. We will not leave Mykolaiv and Water Mission makes that possible for us. Thank you,” says Volodymyr, a Ukrainian native.

Since February 2022, 50 emergency safe water systems are operational across several Ukrainian cities. These systems have produced more than 23 million liters of safe water. With the help of committed partners, more than 10,000 hygiene kits and three million water purification packets have been distributed. Together, we have served more than 100,000 Ukrainians.

When Water Mission responds to disasters, support from FedEx allows aid to be sent within hours and provides the ability to respond to multiple disasters simultaneously. This ongoing commitment to supporting Water Mission’s disaster response work worldwide ensures safe water systems are delivered fast and on time, prioritizing care for those in need.
