Increasingly, consumers are demanding hair, skin and cosmetics products that are both high-performing and safe for humans and the environment and incorporate more sustainable packaging. To meet that demand, Dow has developed low-carbon and biodegradable personal care products that use natural ingredients, such as corn starch and rice husks, and materials for luxury perfume caps and cosmetic jars that incorporate biobased or circular materials.

Dow produces rice husk that is renewably derived as a waste product of rice milling to bring Dow’s EcoSmooth™ Rice Husk Cosmetic Powder to the cosmetic ingredients market. Launched in 2022, EcoSmooth™ Rice Husk Cosmetic Powder delivers a smooth feel combined with optical benefits that include blurring imperfections and mattifying skin.

Dow’s MaizeCare™ Clarity Polymer also was recognized in 2022 with two prestigious innovation awards – a R&D 100 Award and the BIG™ Sustainability Product of the Year. This biodegradable polymer offers an array of benefits in color cosmetic applications, and its fixative and film-forming properties make it ideal for creating crystal-clear hair care styling formulations. Moreover, it readily breaks down when washed out and goes down the drain.

Meeting the Demand for Sustainably Sourced Beauty Products

Reducing carbon emissions, sustainably sourcing ingredients and rethinking packaging are becoming trends that more consumers and beauty brands are embracing. In fact, a recent survey showed that 76% of consumers are now seeking out sustainable products. With that in mind, Dow’s personal care business is focusing on transforming its product portfolio to include bioderived and biodegradable ingredients that don’t compromise on performance.

“Three years ago, we activated the personal care portfolio transformation and committed to bring highly performing and sustainable ingredients to the market,” said Isabel Almiro do Vale, global strategic marketing director for Dow Personal Care. “We are bringing to life Dow’s commitment for advancing a low-carbon, circular economy while having the latest beauty care trends and consumer benefits top of mind.”

Contributing to More Sustainable Packaging for Beauty Brands

Dow also is helping major beauty brands meet their goals for more sustainable packaging by delivering bio-based and circular plastics that are used in the manufacture of premium perfume caps and cosmetic cream jars.

Earlier this year, Dow and LVMH Beauty, whose brands include Parfums Christian Dior, Givenchy Paris and Guerlain, announced they are collaborating to accelerate the use of sustainable packaging across LVMH’s perfume and cosmetic products. In 2023, some of LVMH’s perfume packaging will include both Dow’s bio-based SURLYN™ and circular SURLYN™. The sustainable SURLYN™ portfolio will deliver similar crystalline transparency and freedom of design expected from the rest of the SURLYN™ range, at a low carbon footprint.

The collaboration will help LVMH achieve its sustainability targets without compromising quality.

“At LVMH, with our Life 360 program, we made the decision that our packaging will contain zero plastic from virgin fossil resources in the near future,” said Claude Martinez, Executive President and Managing Director of LVMH Beauty. “Collaborating with Dow in developing sustainable SURLYN™ is key as this material is used in some of our iconic perfumes, starting with Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire.”

HORSHAM, Pa., May 9, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Sofidel, a leading global provider of paper for hygienic and domestic use has donated 233 cases of toilet paper to local Philadelphia nonprofit Maternity Care Coalition (MCC). The families that are currently assisted by MCC will each receive a full case of toilet paper, enough to last a typical family a few months.

“MCC serves many families through our home visiting and community education programs who live at or below the poverty level,” said Lonnese Bodison, Senior Director of Programs, MCC. “We hear first-hand accounts of how our families struggle to meet their basic needs. This causes a great deal of stress that ultimately impacts their overall health and well-being. The donation from Sofidel is especially impactful now, as we are experiencing surges in prices of food and household items.”

Sofidel is donating its Nicky Elite brand of toilet tissue. This line of products is produced with responsibly sourced materials, FSC pulp fibers and are packed in paper, making Nicky a plastic-free packaging product. The bath tissue is high-quality and embossed, offering maximum comfort and strength. Nicky bath tissue is biodegradable and septic safe.

“Giving back to the community is extremely important, and this is a valuable way we can help support the future of Philadelphia,” said Fabio Vitali, Vice President of Marketing, Sofidel. “Sofidel is committed to enhancing the communities in which we operate, and we’re thrilled to provide a few months’ supply of essential toilet tissue to deserving families in the Philadelphia area.”

“MCC is excited about this partnership which supports us with expanding the physical resources we provide to families which include diapers, formula, wipes, books, baby supplies, and now, thanks to Sofidel, paper products,” added Bodison.

Fifth Third Bank, National Association, surprised 50 newborns and their families for being born on a special day: 5/3. Babies born across nine hospitals in the Charlotte areas on “Fifth Third Day” received a $1,053 Gift of College® gift card to be used toward a 529 college savings account.

“One of the greatest gifts is knowledge and we hope these contributions toward a college savings account will make a difference in the lives of babies born on Fifth Third Day,” said Lee Fite, regional president of the Carolinas for Fifth Third Bank. “We are proud to celebrate North Carolina Fifth Third Babies and hope this small gesture will kickstart a lifetime of learning and wonderment.”

The new parents also received care packages with a DoorDash gift card, and gifts for the baby including a onesie, milestone blanket and diapers. The 50 Charlotte newborns also received a matchbox version of the NASCAR No. 17 Fifth Third Bank Ford Mustang.

Celebrating new parents, babies and college educations

Between Fifth Third Days in 2017 and 2022, the Bank has gifted 399 babies with $1,053 to go toward a 529 college savings account, in partnership with Gift of College. The Bank has hosted Fifth Third Day Babies in Cincinnati, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Indianapolis. Charlotte and Louisville were this year and brought that total to 493.

Mother to Fifth Third Baby Prestyn, Danielle “DJ” Johnson said, “We were so shocked and thrilled. To get all of those gifts, we were just so elated.” Baby Prestyn was born at Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord, North Carolina.

529s: Investing in your child’s future

Opening a 529 account early in a child’s life can lead to endless educational and career possibilities. And once a 529 account is opened, friends, extended family, and even employers can contribute as well – creating a circle of support for parents in preparing for their child’s future.

“Starting the investing process when a child is brand new provides plenty of time for additional contributions to be made and to compound and grow in value,” said Patricia Roberts, chief operating officer of Gift of College and mother of a recent debt-free college graduate. “A gift like this is an investment in a child’s future and one of the very best gifts new parents and their child can receive.

“As a mom who’s been there, I know the value of starting the savings process early and the many doors educational savings can open down the line. I immediately began sleeping better at night once I knew we had a plan in place for our child’s future. Looking back, opening a 529 account when our child was an infant was one of the best decisions we made. “

Children with college savings are more likely to pursue and complete higher education. No matter what path a child chooses to pursue, savings will help make them easier to achieve. And post-secondary education is linked to higher pay, upward mobility, improved health and other valuable benefits.

Arrow and eInfochips are helping young entrepreneurs in India improve water quality and public health with a smart IOT sensor package enhanced by AI. Now the Saafwater platform is being tested in large cities like Hyderabad where water quality can fluctuate with serious consequences.

Saaf is a Hindi word for “clean” and “pure”.

Saafwater is a startup by young Indian entrepreneurs who want to help provide reliably clean water and reduce health risks for their nation’s 1.4 billion citizens – and billions more worldwide.

Their solution – a smart IOT sensor package enhanced by AI – won the 2021 Call for Code global competition for humanitarian technologies. The contest is supported by Arrow Electronics, charitable partner United Nations Human Rights, Founding Partner IBM, and others.

In 2022, Arrow matched Saafwater with eInfochips, an Arrow-owned design engineering firm with offices and prototyping centers in India. Together, they revised the platform using 4G to amplify the device’s capabilities, allowing for faster real-time data and quicker turnaround for analyzing contaminated water. The new development also makes the device easier to manufacture at scale.

It attaches to water pipes serving an apartment complex, an office building, or a community. Sensors continuously measure the water’s quality and stores the data in the Cloud for analysis. Water utilities and residents receive water quality updates and recommendations via text messages and a smart phone app.

Engineers at eInfochips built five cellular communication boards for the new design, and those units are being field tested during 2023 in the city of Hyderabad, population 11.5 million. Saafwater plans to install hundreds of units in more communities in India within a year.

Saafwater: How it Works and Who it Helps

The 4G enabled communication board built by eInfochips works with the control module created by Saafwater, which detect contaminants – a system that works effortlessly and improves data transmission reliability and speed.

“Two billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. We wish to deploy Saafwater in every village, every town, and every city in the world.”

– Jay Aherkar, co-founder of SaaF Water

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, May 9, 2023, /3BL Media/ – Infinity Recycling, Invest-NL and LyondellBasell announced today they have invested in Pryme N.V., an innovative cleantech company, located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The group of investors contributed nearly EUR 13 million to support the commercialization of Pryme’s pyrolysis process to convert used plastic into valuable products on an industrial scale. Pryme is currently building an advanced recycling plant in Rotterdam that is expected to start production later this year and plans to build a second larger-scale plant in 2025.

“We are excited to welcome this group of strong investors at our side,” said Chris Herve, CEO of Pryme. “Just like earlier investments by Infinity Recycling and Stichting Multistrat opened doors and allowed us to gain important market knowledge, we expect our new investors to each bring valuable experience and perspective to further develop our technology. With this dedicated support comes responsibility and expectation to deliver – a challenge we gladly accept.”

Pryme has developed a new cost-effective approach to pyrolysis that allows used plastic to be recycled with a high conversion rate, on an industrial scale and with a lower carbon footprint. With the new capital, Pryme aims to accelerate the roll-out of this technology to help reduce the amount of plastic being incinerated or ending up in the environment.

Jeroen Kelder, Managing Partner, Infinity Recycling, said: “Infinity Recycling is pleased to announce that it has successfully assembled a strong consortium of investors to support its portfolio company Pryme in its next phase of growth. We are proud to have facilitated this important milestone for Pryme and are confident that this backing will be instrumental in its continued success.”

Elisabeth Storm de Grave, Principal at Invest-NL, said: “We are pleased to invest in Pryme in close cooperation with our portfolio fund Infinity Recycling and LyondellBasell. This investment round is a significant milestone for scaling up Pryme’s advanced recycling capacities, which are critical to address those parts of the plastic waste streams that cannot be recycled through mechanical technologies. It clearly underlines the strong position of the Netherlands to address the plastic waste crisis.”

“With increasing demand from society and customers for more circular products, we are thrilled to invest in fast-growing companies like Pryme to support the scale-up of new advanced recycling commercial operations and reduce the volume of used plastic sent to incineration,” said Martino Gabellich, LyondellBasell Vice President Advanced Recycling and Low Carbon Solutions. “This investment supports our strategy to grow our circular and low carbon solutions , as we intend to use part of the pyrolysis oil produced from this new Pryme facility in our planned integrated hub in Cologne, Germany.”

Cummins

COLUMBUS, Ind., May 9, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Global power leader Cummins Inc. recently signed a definitive agreement with Tata Motors Limited to manufacture a range of low- to zero-emissions technology products in India over the next few years.

The agreement was signed by Jennifer Rumsey, Cummins’ President and Chief Executive Officer, and Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors, at Cummins’ headquarters in Columbus, Indiana (U.S.). It was announced late last month.

Tata Motors and Cummins have a 30-year strong partnership through their joint venture Tata Cummins Private limited (TCPL) in India, established in 1993. The signing of this definitive agreement further strengthens their relationship and is a step forward from the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organizations in November 2022 to collaborate on the design and development of low- and zero-emissions propulsion technology solutions for commercial vehicles in India.

As a part of this agreement, Cummins and Tata Motors Limited have set up a new business entity called TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited (GES), a wholly owned subsidiary under the existing joint venture, with a focus on the development and manufacturing of sustainable technology products.

These products will include hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, fuel delivery systems, as well as battery electric powertrains and fuel cell electric systems through the Accelera by Cummins brand.

The low- to zero-emissions technologies developed by TCPL GES will be integrated into both on-highway and off-highway applications for domestic and international markets. This agreement will play a pivotal role in developing sustainable powertrain solutions that will help in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and supporting India’s net zero ambitions.

“Progress requires partnership, and I am delighted that we are embarking on this decarbonization journey with our trusted partner of 30 years – Tata Motors,” Rumsey said after signing the agreement. “Together, we will advance low- and zero-emissions technologies in a way that is best for our customers, communities, and the planet.”

Wagh is also excited about the partnership.

“Tata Motors is leading the global megatrend of green, smart and safe mobility in India,” Wagh said. “Our goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2045 in the commercial vehicles segment. We are collaborating with partners who believe in this vision and are delighted to further strengthen our three-decade long association with Cummins Inc.”

Gina Qiao, Chief Marketing Officer & Chief Strategy Officer, Lenovo

Despite all the challenges the technology industry and wider world faced in the past few years, we are now in the strongest position as a company and as a brand than we ever have been. Our strategic commitment to becoming the leader and enabler of intelligent transformation, with end-to-end solutions and an unparalleled, diverse portfolio of offerings, is bearing real fruit.

At Lenovo, we thrive through adversity—and that’s only possible because of the extraordinary talent and perseverance of our employees. Every year, we gather for a series of global employee Kickoff events to reflect on the past, project into the future, and celebrate the teams behind our success. And right now, many of us finally get to reconnect and recharge in person after years apart. I cannot express how much it fills my heart to once again be together with my colleagues around the world!

As we enter our new fiscal year, I’m proud to say that our strategy and marketing teams played an integral role in leading Lenovo’s transformation, innovation, and citizenship endeavors. We did this with an ambitious vision for the future only Lenovo can build, and a deep understanding of the needs of our customers, partners, and communities.

I find myself prouder than ever of the brilliant people at the company. We all find ways to innovate and challenge each other while still prioritizing corporate citizenship, including demanding equity and product accessibility, preserving indigenous languages, and being the first PC and smartphone maker with net-zero commitments validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. We put people at the center of everything we do.

As seen in our last quarterly earnings, our service-led transformation and vision for a New IT are well underway. Lenovo is no longer known as a just a device maker—though we continue to lead in that space—but instead as a solutions and services provider.

By firmly executing our corporate strategy, our efforts have clearly paid off. For our core business, despite severe market headwinds, we maintain our number 1 position in the PC market worldwide, with an eye towards creating even greater flexibility and possibility for our customers. For diversified growth engines, our non-PC revenue mix has reached a record high of 41% of group revenue as of Q3. This is a significant milestone in our transformation journey! And as anyone who knows Lenovo will attest, we will not lose momentum or ambition. At this moment in the history of Lenovo, with a healthy core business and a thriving diversified portfolio, nothing is holding us back from taking our transformation to the next level.

Sharing our vision of smarter technology for all

I love having the chance to tell Lenovo’s story and share our commitment to a better future made possible through technology. I’m thrilled to see this brought to life through our new corporate video.

This encapsulates our creativity, unified vision and visual identity, and focusses on showcasing business outcomes driven by our customers—who tell us they see us as technology partners in their growth story. This project was pulled off entirely in-house by our Brand team – from strategy to messaging to creative to production. Of course, I’m personally proud of that! But crucially, it also involved close and constant collaboration with teams across Lenovo to best represent the depth and breadth of our work.

The same team created the pathbreaking Lenovo Late Night IT series. The second season, now taken forward by the NA Marketing team, is worth a watch for a candid and comedic look at the ways technology transforms the world in ever-deeper ways.

Building a better future

So what’s next for our corporate strategy? Simply put, we will GO DEEP. We will go deep in prioritizing a more resilient business and seek the balance between scale and profitability. We will go deep in driving horizontal building blocks using our own IP, just like TruScale, to develop solutions that we then tailor to different markets and different customers. And finally, we will go deep in investing in innovations to tackle the smart integration trends in the market and build long-term competitiveness.

And our storytelling and outreach will go deeper, from focusing on communities in North Carolina, Brazil, or Robinson Crusoe Island to partnerships with F1, Ducati Corse, and DreamWorks. Stay tuned!

Finally, I want to offer my deepest gratitude and admiration for the resilience of our employees and their communities. The past few years presented unprecedented challenges, and I am awed by how you all rose to the occasion. I believe the best is yet to come—and we will build it together.

Nedra Wilson is a military veteran who served eight years in the U.S. Army. She has lived in her New Orleans home for more than 20 years. After Hurricane Katrina, she was forced to renovate the property, and it was damaged again during Hurricane Ida in 2021.

Living on a fixed income, Nedra doesn’t have the resources to complete all the necessary repairs. The Home Depot Foundation recently partnered with Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) to renovate and upgrade the home for Nedra and her 7-year-old grandchild.

RTNO installed a new, fortified roof on the home. Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, joined in to help make the property safer and more accessible. Volunteers cleared debris from the property, weatherproofed her deck, removed and replaced the old insulation, and fixed the fence. They also added grab bars and accessibility items and landscaped the yard.

Founded in 1988, RTNO’s goal is to improve the quality of life of low-income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, veterans or a single head of household with minor children. As The Home Depot Foundation celebrates 30 years of giving back, Team Depot and Rebuilding Together volunteers are partnering to complete community service projects across the country for veteran homeowners like Nedra.

Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has invested $475 million in veteran causes and helped renovate and enhance more than 55,000 veteran homes and facilities, ensuring more of our nation’s heroes have a safe, comfortable place to call home that fits their individual needs.
