May 15, 2023 /3BL Media/ – A new brief from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) details policy actions the US government must take to conserve America’s grassland prairie habitats. Grasslands are critical for biodiversity and nature, hold approximately one-third of global terrestrial carbon stocks, and provide critical resilience in the face of climate change. They are also essential to livelihoods and food security. And yet each year we plow up millions of acres of grasslands, to the point where more than 70% of America’s prairies have been destroyed. 

The brief explains how some well-intentioned policies, like federal subsidies for crop insurance and the Renewable Fuel Standard, have inadvertently incentivized the conversion of grasslands. It also discusses how grasslands can be prioritized in existing and proposed programs and legislation.

Suzy Friedman, WWF’s senior director of food policy, said: “World leaders are scratching their heads to come up with solutions to the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. Meanwhile there’s an obvious one staring us in the face: let’s stop destroying our American grasslands, which are biodiversity hotspots and carbon sinks, and are vital culturally and economically. In the season finale, host Ben Coffin talks to three guests from previous episodes—Sarah Laselva, Jonathan Wright, and Dr. Silviu Torin– and an incredibly special new guest—Emmy award winner and professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Alan Bovik– to explore the place where these three technologies intersect: The Metaverse.

The Metaverse: The point between physical and digital is human

I In 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook’s Meta rebrand and ushered in a tsunami of press speculation about the Metaverse, a term coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 dystopian sci-fi novel Snow Crash. Despite what Mark Zuckerberg might have us believe, the concept of a technology-immersive reality was first introduced to the world by The Chamber of Life, a story published in 1929 by pulp sci-fi magazine Amazing Stories. In the story, the narrator is invited to enter the Chamber of Life by its inventor who sees in the young narrator his own youthful ambition and passion for progress. While there, the narrator meets a host of people who introduce him to marvels of technology that augment every aspect of daily life. Considering the prescience of his prose, Wertenbaker and his short list of published works deserve a modern revival.

Even before the pandemic, contactless alternatives to traditionally physical interactions were on the rise. Debates about screen time and the merits of virtual work and school have replaced prime-time queries from evening newscasters asking parents if they know where their children are. We can work, shop, work out, and connect with friends without ever needing to put pants or shoes on. Technology has offered so many new and wonderful forms of convenience and entertainment that we have only recently realized how thirsty we have become for authentic human connections. As with all things, the absence of human connection during the pandemic has ignited a new appreciation for it. This appreciation is, surprisingly, tempered with most people desirous of a middle ground where the contactless conveniences of Covid and the magic spark intrinsic to real-world dynamics meet.

Charting a Course to the Metaverse

Like a pendulum, every new breakthrough is polarizing, with some rejecting new ideas out of hand and others jumping in with both feet. Eventually, innovation breakthroughs occur that appease everyone so we eventually land somewhere in the middle. The Metaverse’s seamless immersive marriage of the physical and digital acts like gravity pulling this pendulum towards the center. Neither Stephenson nor Wertenbaker—nor any of the countless other visionary creators—were able to succinctly describe the intertwining of our physical and digital realities. The reason for this—and your middle school language arts teacher would back me up on this—is that you cannot write with succinct authority about something you have not experienced.

Neither Stephenson, Wertenbaker, nor any of the countless future-gazing visionaries who have given readers a glimpse into their view of a world where the digital and physical worlds are unified would have satisfied the demands of a language arts teacher. While they may be able to answer the ‘5 W’s’—who, what, where, when, and why— of the metaverse adequately enough, the ‘how’ would evade them. Ben’s panel of experts, on the other hand, understands the complexities behind realizing the full and as-yet-undiscovered potential of the Metaverse.

Hazards and Roadblocks Ahead

“I don’t think anyone can predict at this point what it’s going to look like,” says Sarah Laselva about the Metaverse, “but I think everyone would be foolish to say it’s not going to be very different—and a huge opportunity.” Realizing something completely new on the magnitude of the Metaverse will require a different sort of visionary thinking than that of the sci-fi futurists who painted portraits of a future defined by a tech-immersive human experience.

To revolutionize digital experiences requires revolutionary new testing methods. By definition, the Metaverse is a revolution. It’s “really focusing on collaboration,” says Jonathan Wright. But it “completely changes the dynamic of how we test everything. We have to test how we’re actually viewing the content in stereo.” Creating a truly connected digital experience requires app developers to properly convey the full spectrum of human communication—both spoken and body language. Doing this requires a deeper understanding of biometrics—body tracking, gesture tracking, and gaze—, and adds new layers of complexity to the testing workflows.

The Metaverse represents a novel new revenue generation channel. Brands like Gucci and Nike see how consumers have responded to the ability to customize their avatars in apps like Roblox and Fortnite. The rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) also reflects this rising desire for exclusivity and digital individualism. But this is a limited view of how technology immersion will impact the human world. The testing process that Jonathan discussed will benefit from simulated realities, as well. Dr. Silviu Torin explains that simulation software “can provide the virtual environment whereby a lot of tier-one automakers can validate and verify their algorithms and a lot of their components.”

The simulation capabilities predicted in this wider lens view of the Metaverse will improve road safety These types of simulations aggregate greater volumes of better-defined data that would otherwise be unwieldy and cost-prohibitive to collect manually. Rapidly changing weather conditions and unpredictable pedestrian and cyclist movements are difficult to bake into testing algorithms right now. Dr. Torin expects that simulation technology will enable better machine learning algorithms that “identify these corner cases from different sources and generate the scenarios. This is much more efficient.”

Putting the Metaverse to Good Use

Intimacy is required for any simulated interaction to be truly realistic, and this intimacy is going to be difficult to experience if you are connected to the Metaverse isolated in your home. We say things in online interactions that we would never say to someone we were standing in front of. Face-to-face interactions are indeed intimate and make it far more difficult to utter words that seem acceptable online. It is also what dystopian sci-fi leans into. The sterile, cold digital environment grants permission for equally cold, cruel interactions. When we are outside, squinting in the sunlight and chatting with neighbors, these same interactions would be deemed intolerable. This disparity in social behavior is one of the clearest indicators of the boundary between the physical and digital worlds.

Despite being more connected to each other than ever before, we are also more isolated. We create echo chambers online that allow us to block out the beautiful, messy chaos of the real world. In turn, we are seeing more people acting on the shared sentiments of their echo chambers. Dr. Alan Bovik hopes that the Metaverse can bring that aspect of intimacy to online interactions. “I want the Metaverse to be something where you’re experiencing the world. And it is augmented.” The Metaverse will be a dramatic paradigm shift in how we interact with our world. By giving people the ability to experience people, places, cultures, and wonders they would otherwise never be able to destigmatize the “other” and humanizes things we would otherwise fear.

“I want you outside,” Dr. Bovik says on the show, inciting riotous cheers from every parent tuning in. He envisions the Metaverse as something that allows us to bring our online community with us as we explore the world. In the Metaverse, he sees wearable devices like glasses having the ability to let you interact with true digital twins of your network as opposed to the cartoonish avatars we currently think of. “You can create a model of that person at your receiver, hopefully inside those glasses,” he explains. You would be able to see the physical micro-expressions that communicate so much more than words alone can convey. Simulations that allow us to literally see the world through others’ eyes has world-changing potential. It creates a new opportunity for global empathy and increased compassion that inspires action in ways that words and pictures never can.

Dr. Alan Bovik is a vision scientist, engineer, and educator. He holds the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is also the director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE). Dr. Bovik is also a faculty member in University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Machine Learning Laboratory, the Institute for Neuroscience, and the Wireless Networking Communications Group.

In addition to these esteemed positions, Dr. Bovik is also a two-time Emmy Award winner. In 2015, Dr. Bovik earned a Primetime Emmy Award in recognition of the perception-based video quality measurement tools he developed that have now become the industry standard in television. ATEHNS, Ga., May 15, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Georgia’s overall greenhouse gas emissions are declining, experts and researchers from the Drawdown Georgia Research Team announced. The researchers report that, while the Covid-19 pandemic may have been the impetus for some of the emission decline measured from 2017 to 2021, most emission reductions come from the use of cleaner fuels to generate electricity in the state. Researchers also posit that the opportunity to more quickly deploy Georgia’s most effective climate solutions is supported by investments that are newly available under recent federal policy, such as the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Despite strong economic and population growth, Georgia’s GHG emissions declined by 5% between 2017 and 2021,” said Dr. Marilyn A. Brown, Regents’ Professor and Brook Byers Professor of Sustainable Systems in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech. “While some numbers are trending in the right direction, our data analysis also tells us that segments of our economy have an expanding carbon footprint. This helps us understand how to focus climate solutions work in Georgia where it is most needed.”

“The Drawdown Georgia Research Team reports that the Georgia story is beginning to trend to a positive one, and that the carbon footprint of our “average” citizen has declined from 22,092 to 20,253 pounds,” said John Lanier, executive director of the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, a primary funder of Drawdown Georgia. “That’s an 8% decline. Based on the collaborations we’re a part of, we’re confident this is only the beginning of Georgia’s carbon reduction trend.”

Drawdown Georgia is a statewide research-based initiative launched in 2020 that was born from a multi-university collaboration, localizing the climate solutions work done by Project Drawdown to identify the 20 highest impact solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the state in five sectors: Electricity, Transportation, Land Sinks, Food and Agriculture, and Buildings and Materials. The organization tracks these metrics through its one-of-a-kind Greenhouse Gas Emissions Tracker.

Exploring Emissions in Georgia by Sector

Electricity Sector

“The Electricity sector has offered the greatest opportunity for emissions reduction, historically, and can also be a big source of emissions” said Dr. Brown. “And, the numbers are different for residential and commercial consumers.”

Carbon emissions from Georgia’s electric power plants declined by more than 15% between 2017 and 2021. This was primarily driven by the retirement of coal plants, the shift to natural gas, and large-scale solar. These trends were supported by the increasing efficiency of our homes and businesses.The reduction in emissions has varied across end users. The residential sector has the largest demand for electricity, and home heating in Georgia depends primarily on natural gas. In contrast, commercial buildings almost exclusively depend on electricity, so the carbon footprint of offices and businesses has decreased as the power sector has cleaned up. Offices have also been dialing back in occupancy levels due to Covid, and as a result, office buildings have seen a larger decline in GHG emissions compared to homes, apartment complexes, and industry.

Land Sinks

The “steady state” contributor that has kept Georgia’s carbon footprint in check has been its natural carbon sinks, called “land sinks” by the Drawdown Georgia team. Over the four year period, Georgia’s forests, soil, and wood products provided a reliable and significant offset to some of the state’s carbon emissions.

“Georgia’s forests and soils, which absorb carbon dioxide, offset nearly a third of Georgia’s emissions,” said Dr. Brown. “And an even more positive story can be told by the state’s wood products that offer an expanding carbon sink.”

Georgia’s carbon sinks overall declined by only 1.6% between 2017 and 2021: while forest carbon uptake decreased by 2.9%, the carbon stored in wood products increased by 3.5%.

Transportation

“The decarbonization of electricity has moved Transportation into the driver’s seat as Georgia’s largest source of carbon emissions,” said Dr. Brown. “And while emissions from commuters declined during the pandemic, emissions from diesel-fueled medium and heavy-duty trucks grew due to increased deliveries during Covid.”

Transportation emissions surpassed pre-pandemic (2017) levels in 2021, emitting nearly 60 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MMtCO2) in 2021, 4% more than its 57.3 MMtCO2 in 2017.While gasoline-powered cars, pick-ups, and SUVs returned to pre-COVID levels, emissions from diesel-fueled medium and heavy-duty trucks and buses grew by 16.1%. This was driven by a boom in online retailing, accounting for nearly all of the sector’s growth in emissions.

Food and Agriculture

Carbon emissions from food and agriculture decreased by 7.1% from 10.1 in 2017 to 9.4 million tonnes in 2021.

Agriculture soil management and electricity used in the agriculture industry are large contributors to the sector’s emissions and are also the main driver of the sector’s emission reduction, followed by the decline in GHG emissions from electricity.Manure management was the only sub-sector that increased its emissions (5.9%).

Drawdown Georgia by the Numbers Updates Available

County-level quarterly emissions updates are now available from Drawdown Georgia. You can also find state- and county-level emissions data on the Drawdown Georgia GHG Emissions Tracker, a one-of-its-kind dashboard and tool that aggregates information from monthly data published by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as from annual data published in the State Inventory Tool and FLIGHT large facility emissions database, both created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The GHG Tracker was created by a team of data scientists led by Dr. William Drummond at Georgia Tech to aid municipal and elected officials, climate scientists, researchers, and advocates to better understand trends in emissions at a local level in Georgia.

I’m pleased to report that we are making steady and significant progress toward our Gigaton Challenge. As of 2022, we’ve reduced 93 million metric tons of CO2e from our customers’ carbon footprint since 2019. To give that metric another perspective, that’s the equivalent CO2e of the amount of gasoline consumed in Australia in two years or Norway over an entire decade.

In our own operations, we are accelerating toward a more sustainable future, with significant reductions in carbon emissions, improvements in our total energy efficiency – including energy demand met with renewables – and great progress in our efforts to decrease water use in water-stressed regions where we operate.

We’ve continued to increase the diversity of our workforce and acknowledge we have more to do to be reflective of the communities we work in. We are stepping up our investment in our corporate citizenship strategy and deploying more and more employee volunteers to uplift their communities.

Staying our course

The shorthand that has arisen among the investor and NGO community to describe the efforts of companies like ours to align our business with positive social and environmental impact is “ESG,” environmental, social and governance. Baltimore Volunteers at Junior Achievement’s Finance Park

On March 30, Baltimore volunteered at Junior Achievement’s Finance Park where students had the opportunity to explore their personal financial futures first-hand. Each volunteer was assigned a budget category—such as insurance, childcare or housing—or “station,” where the students learned about the budget item and asked questions to help them learn how much of their salary they may need to allocate to that expense.

St. Petersburg Assembles Meal Bags and Sorts Clothes

On April 3, St. Petersburg employees volunteered at the Kind Mouse, a nonprofit that assists families and children in Pinellas County with food insecurities and chronic hunger. Volunteers helped date donated food and assembled more than 1,000 meal bags to be distributed to children within Pinellas County schools.

On April 13, St. Petersburg volunteers helped sort and tag incoming donations at Clothes to Kids, a nonprofit that provides free new and quality-used clothing to low-income or in-crisis school-age children.

Mumbai Donates Blood 

Franklin Templeton Mumbai employees hosted a blood drive for a local blood bank. The city of Mumbai needs 650 units of blood every day. Donor help ensure blood units are available to meet these needs.

Rancho Cordova Joins Sacramento SPCA’s Doggy Dash

On April 22, animal-loving volunteers in Rancho Cordova participated in the Sacramento SPCA’s biggest fundraiser and the largest pet walk in Northern California of the year, the Doggy Dash. Volunteers helped at the registration desk and performed a variety of duties. The Franklin Templeton Fur Family team raised US$1,132 for the organization.

International Girls in ICT Day is a global movement encouraging girls and young women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers.

Cisco hosts events through our Women Rock-IT program, which began in 2014 and has seen more than two million participants, with over half enrolling in one of our Cisco Networking Academy courses as a result.

At Cisco, we want the future to be sustainable, inclusive, and resilient. To prepare for this future, the global workforce is transitioning to jobs that will focus on finding innovative solutions to some of our biggest challenges, including climate change. We must prepare everyone for the emerging digital and low-carbon economy, particularly young people who will lead the next generation of visionaries.

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), by 2030, 9 out of 10 jobs will require digital skills. Many people, including youth and the most economically vulnerable, will need help developing these skills so they can participate in this new economy. For example, a 2020 report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) shows that by 2030, some 880 million children globally will not be on track to develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.

Another skill set that will be essential in the transition to this new economy: “green skills.” According to a 2022 guide from The International Labor Organization (ILO) for young people, job seekers and those who support them, “The transition to the green economy will inevitably involve destruction of some jobs, but in the same time, the creation of new ones. The ILO estimates that about 100 million new jobs can potentially be created by 2030, leading to a net job creation of 25 million jobs.” And we are already seeing some progress. In the United States, over 100,000 new clean energy jobs were created across the country in just six months after the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law in August 2022. And the same research from Climate Power shows that as of January 31, 2023, there are over 90 new clean energy projects in small towns and bigger cities nationwide totaling $89.5 billion in new investments.

But what exactly are green skills? WEF states, “Green skills are abilities or knowledge a worker can use to prevent, monitor, or clean up pollution, and optimize stewardship and conservation of the natural resources that companies use to produce goods and services.” Green skills will be in demand across different industries, including finance, technology, transportation, and even fashion.

It’s critical that the workforce is prepared to facilitate the digital and low-carbon transition in tandem. We can no longer teach digital skills without also incorporating the realities of how technology can both impact and benefit the environment. Tech is enabling different ways of working and addressing environmental issues — such as apps that collect data about wildfires, IoT devices that monitor the health of the soil on a farm, advances in hardware engineering that make products more energy efficient, or video conferencing tools that support the shift into hybrid work, so people spend less time commuting. All these changes are made possible by technology innovations, and we want to ensure everyone has the skills they need to contribute to this new world.

Why we need girls and women to help drive this new digital and low-carbon economy

According to the Economist, the climate crisis disproportionately impacts girls and women. For example, women and girls are often responsible for securing household essentials like food and water for their families, which becomes more difficult during droughts and other natural disasters that are becoming more common with climate change. And according to the same article, women are less likely to survive natural disasters due to a lack of information or education, not having resources to seek safety, and less access to healthcare.

At the same time, women are taking leadership positions in the field of sustainability. At large companies, 58 percent of sustainability executives are female. And according to the 2022 GreenBiz State of the Profession report, “the number of women in sustainability leadership roles has expanded by close to 20 percentage points in every category since our first survey in 2010.”

Although women are present in manager, director, and vice president roles, when it comes to “green skills” overall, the growth in gender equity seems to stall. According to LinkedIn’s 2022 Global Green Skills Report, there is a global “green gender gap” with 62 women for every 100 men considered green talent in 2021, and this number hasn’t changed since 2015. Why is this happening? According to Fortune, “The technical and engineering jobs that are expected to see the most growth are still very male-dominated. Simply put: STEM fields aren’t making nearly enough progress on the gender front.” According to the UN’s report titled “Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2022”, women make up just 19.9 percent of science and engineering professionals worldwide. The low-carbon economy will need engineers and other creative talent to tackle the climate crisis.

According to The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the four leading causes of the global digital gender divide are: lack of internet access, gaps in digital skills, less representation in STEM fields, and not enough women in tech sector leadership and entrepreneurship.

A 2019 report from McKinsey shows that 40 to 160 million women may need to switch occupations by 2030. If they do not successfully transition to the digital and low-carbon economy, gender inequality in work could worsen. The same report shows there are barriers to reskilling as well, “They have less time to reskill or search for employment because they spend much more time than men on unpaid care work; are less mobile due to physical safety, infrastructure, and legal challenges; and have lower access to digital technology and participation in STEM fields than men.”

Despite these obstacles, the digital and low-carbon economy creates more opportunities for girls and women. According to the ITU, when girls and women are connected and have digital skills, this leads to a positive impact not only for individual women and their families but society as well:

“Giving women and girls access to the Internet and the skills to use digital technologies provides them the opportunity to start new businesses, sell products to new markets, find better-paid jobs and access education, health and financial services, as well as to enhance participation in public life and improve information exchange.”

And according to a 2021 Boston Consulting Group study, if women participated in STEM fields at the same level as men, the low-carbon economy could “yield a total reduction from 2020 through 2050 of 12.7 gigatons of CO2e [carbon dioxide equivalent], or roughly 0.5 gigaton annually.” This is the equivalent of taking over 107 million gasoline-powered cars off the road each year, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator. So clearly, these benefits extend to the health of planet Earth as well.

By increasing women’s access to STEM fields, not only are we supporting research that shows gender diverse teams are more innovative, but this boost in innovation can help us deal with some of our biggest challenges, including climate change. Women have the right to reap the personal benefits of digital and green skills (like more pay and better benefits) while also playing an essential role in unlocking solutions for issues that impact all of us.

How Cisco’s technology and ecosystem are involved

Cisco’s technology and ecosystem can play a role in the twin transition to a digital and low-carbon economy. It starts with our company’s purpose to Power an Inclusive Future for All. We see the digital and low-carbon transition working in tandem to create a more inclusive and sustainable future.

When it comes to our employees, we see first-hand women who emerge in the digital and green workforce, like Beth Kochuparambil, Technical Leader in Cisco’s Common Hardware Group. As a hardware engineer, Beth focuses on how our products balance power and performance through product energy efficiency. There’s also Julie Boegner, a leader in our Partner Specializations organization, and Karin Surber, who leads partner incentive teams. Together, they launched the Environmental Sustainability Specialization and Takeback Incentive for Cisco partners. Environmental Sustainability Specialization recognizes partners who have been trained on how to help customers reduce their carbon footprint through Cisco products and solutions. And the Takeback Incentive offers exclusive discounts to Environmental Sustainability Specialized partners where the customer agrees to return the used hardware back to Cisco, helping to divert waste from landfills. Nearly 400 partners participated in the first year. Through this work, Julie and Karin are helping customers with their digital and low-carbon transition.

Technology enables us to rethink business models in ways that are digital and low-carbon, but also improve individual wellbeing and create opportunities for communities. One example is hybrid work, which helps enable inclusion because it allows us to include more people, and more work styles, in more places. Hybrid work can also have environmental benefits, particularly when combined with smart building technology that uses sensors and low-voltage Power over Ethernet (PoE). These innovations allow us to monitor and control temperature, lighting, and air quality. This is the kind of digital, low-carbon, inclusive thinking we want to accelerate.

As you can see from Beth, our engineers have made great progress in power efficiency and circular design. We’re also seeing customers ask for more capabilities and greater bandwidth that increase power demands. That means we must think even bigger, exploring ways to accelerate renewable energy adoption and the greening of the grid.

The Cisco Foundation helps stimulate cutting-edge innovation in areas where it’s most needed. Today, the Foundation focuses on early-stage decarbonization technology and nature-based solutions to climate change. These investments send a signal to other investors about what we value and where we believe the future is headed.

A Cisco Foundation grantee I’m particularly excited about is Canopy Planet, a female-led, solutions-driven, nonprofit that partners with brands to change unsustainable supply chains to protect the world’s forests, species, and climate. Nicole Rycroft, Founder and Executive Director, is leading Canopy’s efforts to eliminate the use of Ancient and Endangered Forests in the paper, packaging and viscose supply chain within the next 10 years. Canopy Planet is using technology to meet this goal, like the Eco-Paper Database, the world’s largest database of environmentally friendly paper and paper-based packaging products, and ForestMapper, an interactive map to assist companies in transitioning to more sustainable fiber supply chains.

There is also Nidhi Pant, the winner of the 2022 Global Citizen Prize Cisco Youth Leadership Award. Nidhi is a chemical engineer and co-founder of S4S Technologies, a platform that converts farm losses into value-added products through the intervention of sustainable solar-powered technology. The organization increases family incomes and empowers women to be climate champions and decision-makers by transforming women farmers into micro-entrepreneurs. S4S Technologies works with over 24,000 farmers and 800 female entrepreneurs to prevent 40,000 tons of produce from being wasted and saves 37,000 tons of CO2 annually.

We can’t have an inclusive and sustainable future without opportunities for everyone

The way we learn, the way we stay connected with our friends and family, the way we share our ideas, and the way we work are rapidly changing. When we live during a time of transition, we need to ensure everyone can participate and contribute.

Cisco Networking Academy plays a vital role in helping to prepare girls and women for the digital and low-carbon economy. Since its inception 25 years ago, the cumulative number of women participating in Cisco Networking Academy (calculated as a percent of the total number of students who identified their gender as male, female, or nonbinary) has grown over time and now stands at 26 percent.

With diverse perspectives, we can tackle our biggest challenges. By empowering girls and women to pursue digital and green opportunities through role models, mentoring, and training, we can maximize innovation for social and environmental good.

MONTESSON, France., May 15, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Carrefour and Danone, Co-chairs of the CGF Collaboration for Healthier Lives Coalition of Action working group in France, along with partners Alpro, Barilla, Bel, Bonduelle, Catalina, CPM, Savencia and Nutrition & Santé, convened at a Carrefour hypermarket in Montesson, for the launch of the “Meilleur du Végétal” project. The goal is to promote flexitarian diets and to continue collaborative efforts that empower French consumers to live healthier lives.

Over the past four years, the CGF Collaboration for Healthier Lives flexitarian initiatives in France have expanded into 22 Carrefour hypermarkets. In 2022, the initiative resulted in over 70% of consumers increasing flexitarian products in their shopping baskets and yielded a 189% increase in sales. This year, with the support of seven brands, rewards and incentives are available to consumers in the form of coupons and quick, easy, delicious recipes – all Nutriscore A or B – that can be scanned from a QR code in-stores.

Bertrand Swiderski, Sustainability Director at Carrefour said, “At Carrefour, our role is to ensure that our clients have access to healthy and affordable products enabling them to move towards a more flexitarian diet. The support of our suppliers is essential to accelerate the food transition, by proposing such plant-based recipes for instance.”

To mark World Migratory Bird Day, International Paper (IP) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) are celebrating how sustainable forestry provides critical habitat for birds and at the same time, delivers a sustainable, renewable source of fiber for paper products. Forestland Stewards, IP’s conservation partnership with NFWF, is helping to restore and maintain habitat in working forests to benefit bird species like the swallow-tailed kite and other migratory birds. 

One example of how the partnership is helping the swallow-tailed kite is in the South Lowcountry-ACE Basin, where International Paper, NFWF and other funding partners have invested more than $2 million to restore, enhance and protect longleaf pine and bottomland hardwood forest habitats in South Carolina. This landscape is home to large blocks of forest, including many privately owned working forests, which support forest industry jobs and provide habitat for swallow-tailed kites, the northernmost populations of the at-risk gopher tortoise and many other species.

Grant investments are helping partners strengthen collaboration and coordination, provide technical and financial assistance to private landowners to plant longleaf pine and treat longleaf habitat with prescribed fire, and protect working forests and sensitive habitats. These efforts will impact more than 80,000 acres of forest habitat, benefiting the swallow-tailed kite and other migratory birds, and local communities. 

In addition to the Forestland Stewards partnership with NFWF, IP is also partnering with the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and the Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) to help the swallow-tailed kite. This partnership is developing bird-focused management recommendations for private forest landowners, who own about 90 percent of southern forests. The partnership also conducts field-based workshops with forest landowners and IP suppliers, and species-specific work, including capturing, tagging, and tracking swallow-tailed kites. The swallow-tailed kite is one of North America’s most beautiful birds of prey. These large black-and-white birds have long narrow wings that span four feet, and a distinctive forked elongated tail. Swallow-tailed kites breed in swamps, lowland forests, and marshes of the US Southeast, mainly in South Carolina and Florida. They nest in tall trees and need open ground with small prey to feed their young. After rearing its nestlings in a treetop nest, the swallow-tailed kite migrates to wintering grounds in South America.

World Migratory Bird Day is an important reminder to celebrate progress in conserving habitats for the swallow-tailed kite, while also drawing attention to the serious threats birds still face as they migrate. Bird migration is one of the great natural wonders of the world and about 20 percent of bird species migrate. But every year, these migrating birds face new threats. Birds may arrive at a regular stopover site only to discover it has been transformed into a suburban development. Birds hit powerlines and windows, and millions are hunted illegally. Climate change, perhaps the greatest of all threats to migration, is causing habitats to shift, shrink, or disappear entirely.

These are just some of the important reasons IP and the NFWF formed the Forestland Stewards partnership in 2013 to conserve and restore southern forestlands, which comprise some of the United States’ most iconic landscapes. The partnership supports projects to restore native forests, strengthen important fish and wildlife populations, and protect watersheds—while at the same time promoting and supporting working forests in 11 states across the US South.
