Chances are if the weather is nice in Minnesota, you’ll find Tim Clemens, owner of Ironwood Foraging outside. Tim may have started his business because he wanted to be his own boss, but his passion for what he does takes center stage.

As he notes, foraging is the most ancient human narrative and as part of his business he helps bring people out into nature to connect with trees and things they might not think of using otherwise. There may have been a large farm to table movement in recent years, but Tim sees forest to table as an even larger movement. And not only is it healthy for your body, it’s also good for your mind and soul. “A lot of people feel lonely or disconnected. You can walk into any forest and that forest has no opinion of you,” says Tim.

He believes every tree; every flower is a unique expression of our universe and should be explored. Success doesn’t come easy for Tim though, being in Minnesota, where winters are long, his entire business typically exists from May to November. However, for Tim, it’s the excitement that keeps him going every day. To be able to share his love of foraging with others in his classes, is what he looks forward to. He encourages people to take advantage of their environments around them and “Go out and touch grass!”

American Heart Association (AHA), a Quest for Health Equity (Q4HE) grantee, honored scholars of its Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) Scholars Programs with two Spring Research Symposiums.

On April 11, at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC, and on April 13, at Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ, undergraduate students participating in these programs presented their capstone research projects to local leaders including Cathy Doherty SVP, Regional Businesses, Quest Diagnostics, and Ruth Clements, Vice President and General Manager of Quest’s East Region. Members of the AHA’s leadership were also in attendance.

Both the HBCU and HSI Scholars Programs were created by the AHA to invest in students of color. Specifically, the HBCU program serves a goal of increasing the number of African American students who apply and are accepted into graduate biomedical science, research, and public health programs, while the HSI program seeks to aid aspiring Hispanic researchers and healthcare professionals.

As part of the program, undergraduate students enrolled in biomedical and health sciences at these inclusive-driven institutions participate in academic and career-enriching experiences, learning about health disparities in underserved communities, how cultural sensitivity can provide safe and reassuring clinical spaces, and how inclusivity is essential in science.

“Quest for Health Equity is proud to support such an important program of the AHA,” said Michael Floyd, Senior Director, Q4HE. “Each of the participating scholars should be as proud of their achievements as we are. On behalf of everyone at Quest, we wish them all continued success in their journey towards a brighter future in the health sciences.”

Research has shown that investing in high-quality early childhood education can generate as much as a 13% return on investment, delivering benefits that help businesses, communities and the people who live in them. 1

Those dollars can also have a domino effect, ultimately improving property values, providing cost savings for school systems as well as reducing crime rates and reliance on government assistance.

These are some of the reasons why PNC Grow Up Great, the company’s signature philanthropic initiative, helps to instill a lifelong love of learning in our youngest children since 2004.

A Community Investment with Great Returns

A $500 million, multiyear, bilingual early childhood education initiative, PNC Grow Up Great has helped prepare children from birth through age 5 for success in school and life. More than 8 million children have been supported, particularly in underserved communities, since the initiative began 19 years ago.

As part of this initiative, bilingual lesson plans have been created in collaboration with renowned arts and science organizations. They are free to educators, parents and caregivers and can be found in the PNC Grow Up Great Lesson Center.

“Because we’re bankers, not educators, from the start of PNC Grow Up Great we’ve worked with education experts at the local and national level, to develop resources and programs to support pre-K children, their families and their teachers,” said Jeanine Fahnestock,” senior vice president of PNC Bank and deputy executive director for PNC Grow Up Great. “This latest alliance with PBS KIDS is another great example of leveraging the expertise of the best of the best.”

Support for Today’s Teachers

The PNC Grow Up Great Lesson Center provides field-tested lesson plans that educators can immediately integrate into their schedules. In addition to enriching classroom activities, the plans facilitate two-way communication within the home so parents can enhance their children’s education and children can share the compelling topics they’re learning about with their parents, particularly those around arts and science.

Now those plans are getting even better.

Starting in 2021 and continuing through 2024, PNC has committed $750,000 in grants, teaming up with PBS KIDS to elevate selected lesson plans on PBS LearningMedia within its PNC Grow Up Great Lesson Center. More than 60 early childhood educators are actively involved in the continual development of 81 original lessons across seven PBS member stations. By Fall 2024, 118 lesson plans will be available from PBS KIDS on PBS LearningMedia.

Based on teacher feedback, selected lessons are broken into “bite-sized chunks.” All include brief videos of PBS KIDS characters such as Elinor from Elinor Wonders Why, Daniel Tiger from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Buddy from Dinosaur Train, exploring content related to the learning themes. For example, the original Fall Lesson Collection in the PNC Grow Up Great Lesson Center comprised 10 lessons. The Fall Changing Seasons [2]collection on PBS LearningMedia includes 19 lesson plans.2

These lesson plans focus on early science, math and art activities appropriate for each topic. They incorporate PBS KIDS video clips, games, extension activities, articles and crafts for classroom use along with resources to share with families.

What Teachers Have to Say

After her initial experience with the new plans, St. Louis, Missouri educator Molly Seiler (local PBS station Nine PBS, St. Louis, MO), reflected on the level of student engagement they encouraged. “Before participating in a lesson titled ‘Changing Seasons, Rooting for Plants,’ I was unsure what STEM integration in pre-K should look like,” she said. “Now that I have this experience, I want to try more lessons for this coming school year. These lessons were exciting not only for my students, but for me as well. We had fun investigating and learning together. There was lots of laughter and excitement, which is what lessons should have.”

Chau Tran (local PBS station WUCF, Orlando, FL) remarked, “I think this a great resource for those families and teachers that might not necessarily have the means they need to support children in their care. The program offers a plethora of accessible and free resources that more teachers need to know about.”

Supporting Kids Who Can Change the World

Tawnya Heinsohn (local PBS station TPT, Elk River, MN) brings it home, “As my students engaged with some of their favorite PBS KIDS friends, they were able to channel their curiosity, formulate and test hypotheses, and think of creative solutions about the world around them. Our learners may be young, but Elinor, Curious George and Sid the Science Kid encourage them to be world changers.”

Reports highlight progress in environmental, social, and governance efforts worldwide and details achievements in fostering an inclusive environmentKeysight significantly surpassed many 2022 Corporate Social Responsibility key impact goals

SANTA ROSA, Calif., May 17, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) released its 2022 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report and 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Report, highlighting the company’s recent environmental, social impact, ethical governance, diversity, and equity achievements.

Surpassing many CSR key impact goals for fiscal year 2022
Keysight’s 2022 CSR Report showcases how the company progressed and exceeded its key impact goals as well as its contributions to purposeful technology and continued transparency with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting frameworks.

The company made progress in environmental sustainability related to its commitment to net zero emissions for business operations by the end of fiscal year 2040, aligning with the Paris Agreement’s preferred goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Highlights include:

Increasing its global renewable electricity portfolio, including the installation of a 5.8 megawatt (MW) peak rooftop solar array at the company’s largest facility in Penang, Malaysia.Continuing progress toward its energy reduction goal, including the completion of an estimated 3500 megawatt hours (MWh) of annual energy reduction projects.Preparing the company’s science-based targets (SBTs) across all scopes of emissions in 2023 and submitting those targets for validation to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in early 2023.

Keysight significantly surpassed its goals for positive social impact by focusing on community and education, including:

Initiating new partnerships, which increased its science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education reach and equity to engage more than 798,000 students, up from 145,000 in fiscal year 2021. Many of these efforts focused on under-resourced communities to support future diverse technology skill sets.Committing more than $284 million in value to strengthen communities through philanthropic, volunteerism and community engagement actions, which surpassed its $250 million goal for the fiscal year.

The company met its ethical governance goals by not incurring any material negative impacts to its income statement from CSR-related matters in fiscal year 2022. This achievement aligns to Keysight’s ethical operations and business commitments through the company’s robust governance, which is provided by its Standards of Business Conduct (SBC), corporate policies, board and risk oversight, and environmental, health, and safety programs to name a few.

Fostering an equitable and inclusive environment
The Keysight 2022 DEI Report highlights the company’s progress in fostering an equitable and inclusive environment within Keysight and its communities. The company’s goals centered around advancing representation in STEM, increasing the diversity of its workforce worldwide, fostering inclusion, and providing equitable access to development opportunities and other programs to enable its employees to thrive at every stage of their career.

For the second year in a row, the company set goals to improve representation of women and underrepresented minorities in its workforce. Accomplishments included:

Hiring more than 600 women globally and 300 underrepresented minorities1 (URMs) in the U.S., surpassing its URM goal by 1.7 percentage points but falling short of its hiring target for women by 2.8 percentage points. These diversity targets are also a significant aspect of the company’s CSR key impact goals related to positive social impact.Increasing representation of women and URMs on the Keysight Board of Directors to its highest rate to date at more than 50% combined. Keysight also achieved its largest ever increase of women in executive roles and improved the overall percentage of women and URMs in leadership roles.Hosting 52 women-led university teams worldwide for the Keysight Innovation Challenge competition.Continuing partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) through scholarships, internship opportunities, corporate advisory engagements with company executives, and engineering lab equipment grants.Fostering more than 600 mentoring relationships internally, representing nearly 5,000 mentoring hours as well as increasing DEI visibility, training resources and requirements, and opportunities for connection.

HARMAN’s legacy as a global technology leader was established through our thoughtful design and purpose-driven values. At HARMAN, sustainability is one of our strategic pillars that guides everything we do, and this includes our packaging design strategy and product development process. HARMAN understands that different stages of the product life cycle can have different environmental impact. Reducing product-level emissions, including emissions related to packaging, is helps HARMAN reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. With May 7 being US National Packaging Design Day, we wanted to share our efforts on sustainable packaging.

In 2021, HARMAN launched its sustainable packaging initiative, starting with the Lifestyle Consumer Audio SBU. This introduced guidelines such as FSC certified paper and soy ink printing, the avoidance of virgin plastic, whenever possible, with a preference for post-consumer recycled plastic and recyclable paper packaging.

We have already made significant steps – in 2022, HARMAN introduced new packaging for 34 products based on sustainable criteria. The ways we integrate sustainability in to our packaging include reducing packaging size and using post-consumer recycled paper packaging printed with biodegradable soy ink. In 2021 HARMAN launched InfinityLab, a category of power accessories such as wall chargers, powerbanks, wireless stands, and a speakerphone, all packaged right-sized to the products in plastic-free materials printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper with soy-based ink.

Another example is the JBL WAVE TWS headphones which have a 56% smaller box than their predecessors, which helps optimize shipping and leads to a lower carbon footprint.

Redesigning our most popular Lifestyle Consumer Audio SBU products to reduce environmental impact shows HARMAN’s commitment to growth through sustainable and responsible actions. For example, HARMAN expanded its Eco-Edition portfolio with the addition of two of its most popular portable Bluetooth speakers, the JBL Go 3 Eco and JBL Clip 4 Eco, come in packaging made from FSC-certified paper with biodegradable soy ink and free of plastic.

HARMAN is making meaningful progress toward reducing our environmental footprint, and our packaging design has played a major role. Franklin Templeton’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) nominated Laura Fergerson, President, Franklin Templeton Services; Alejandro Nuñez, Internal Advisor Consultant; and Tiffany Hong, Chief Administrative Officer, for awards recognizing their steadfast commitment to work in the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) space. Each was selected from a large pool of candidates to win an award. Read on to learn more.

“These DEI leaders have helped ignite where we are today in so many ways. They have made, and continue to make, a real difference for our employees.”
– Regina Curry, Chief Diversity Officer

Laura Fergerson and Alejandro Nuñez Receive DCIIA DEI Awards

Fergerson and Nuñez were honored by the Defined Contribution Institutional Investment Association (DCIIA) at its DEI Awards, held March 7 at Bank of America’s headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The awards recognize individuals who advocate for member organizations’ diversity, equity and inclusiveness in two categories: Rising Stars and Leaders.

Fergerson was nominated for her leadership in DEI over the years, including founding Franklin Templeton’s first D&I Executive Council and the Women at FT business resource group (BRG). She serves as an executive sponsor of Women at FT and is co-chair of the firm’s Americas D&I Executive Council.

“Laura is an inspirational leader who advocates for DEI and drives the DEI conversation forward within the firm and the broader industry,” said Regina Curry, Chief Diversity Officer. “We appreciate her using her voice to promote the firm’s DEI initiatives, programs and BRG-led events and for positively impacting our colleagues and culture at Franklin Templeton.”

Fergerson was honored alongside 24 other senior industry leaders with the DEI Leader Award.

“I appreciate being nominated by my colleagues at Franklin Templeton and being recognized alongside other impressive leaders in our industry,” Fergerson said. “I’m so happy to see the progress we’ve made as a firm, and it was great to be recognized for my leadership.”

Nuñez was nominated for his continuous DEI leadership at Franklin Templeton, including founding the HOLA BRG, which advocates for Hispanic and Latino employees and their allies. He serves as co-lead of HOLA.

“Alejandro is a great contributor to the firm’s D&I strategy,” Curry said. “We appreciate his passion for engaging with colleagues, peers and clients across the financial services industry and supporting the Latino and Hispanic community.”

Nuñez was recognized with the DEI Rising Star Award alongside an impressive group of 37 other industry DEI contributors.

“I am proud to be the recipient of the DEI Rising Star Award, representing not only Franklin Templeton, but all the dedicated BRG members who work tirelessly to create a more diverse and inclusive culture in the financial services industry,” Nuñez said. “Hearing the stories from other recipients at the ceremony demonstrated to me how significant of an impact we are making in this uphill battle. All the additional hours put into this passion project were worth it, and this award recognized those efforts.”

The DEI Awards dinner was also attended by Drew Carrington, Institutional DC Market Segment Leader; Tripp Braillard, Head of DC Distribution, Clarion Partners; and Lavina Mehta, VP, Retirement Investment Solutions.

Mary Beth Glotzbach, Senior Institutional DC Strategist, was recognized at the event for her contributions to DCIIA. She led DCIIA’s executive committee for the last three years, first as chair from 2020 to 2021 and then as co-chair for 2022.

Tiffany Hong Honored with Ascend A-List Award

Hong won an Ascend A-List Award, which celebrates Pan-Asian role models for their exceptional contributions and achievements.

She was recognized for her ongoing DEI work, including founding the first D&I Executive Council and the Asian Pacific Islander (API) BRG at Franklin Templeton.

“Tiffany has rallied support from leaders across the globe to raise attention to the harmful effects of anti-Asian racism that occurred during the height of the pandemic. With her driving effort, Franklin Templeton hosted our first of many Courageous Conversations to address the most pressing DEI topics,” Curry said.

Hong attended the Ascend A-List Awards Gala on April 3 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, joined by Annette Babich, Business Enablement Manager and API BRG Steering Committee Member; Thanh Bui, Managing Director, Clarion Partners and API BRG Co-Chair; and Martin Ji, Director, Senior Portfolio Analyst, ClearBridge Investments and API BRG Steering Committee Member. The A-List Awards highlight the power of resilient, impactful and courageous leadership. The honorees, who represent a cross section of Asian ethnicities, were selected for their professional accomplishments and advancement of others in their industries or communities.

“I am honored to receive the award, but the recognition should be to the API BRG leadership team,” Hong said. “I am lucky to be part of this amazing community, and I am committing to pay it forward.”

LAUSANNE, Switzerland and NEWARK, Calif., May 17, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Logitech International (SIX: LOGN) (Nasdaq: LOGI) announced today that it is partnering with iFixit, a global repair community that sells replacement parts and provides toolkits and repair guides for consumer electronics devices. Logitech is working with iFixit to facilitate the availability of spare parts, support beyond-warranty repair on select products, and develop relevant repair guides to support this repair.

“Consumers often struggle to find avenues to repair and extend the life of their product,” said Prakash Arunkundrum, chief operating officer at Logitech. “More can be done by brands and by broader value chains who wish to play an active role in the shift to a more circular economy. I am excited that we are able to collaborate with iFixit to develop better designs and make it easier for consumers to have a self-repair option to extend the life of our products.”

Global electronic and electrical waste (e-waste) is projected to grow to over 75 million metric tons by 2030 according to The Global E-Waste Monitor 2020 Report. Design and repairability will need to go hand-in-hand in order to reduce the amount of e-waste the world generates. The growing e-waste challenge is fueled by higher consumption rates, short life cycles, and few repair options. Logitech is working to address this challenge by elevating its repair capabilities to increase the life-span of Logitech devices, Design for Sustainability (DfS) and drive more circular business models. Essential to Logitech’s product development process, DfS plays an important role in informing design decisions, including those around repairability, refurbishment, and recycling.

“Making spare parts available and designing more-repairable devices are the best things manufacturers can do to make their products sustainable,” said Elizabeth Chamberlain, Director of Sustainability at iFixit. “We’ve been working with Logitech to develop designs that make it easier for people to fix their stuff. And now, we’re thrilled by the opportunity to help get Logitech repair parts to people around the world. To give a healthy planet to the next generation, we need to keep our things working for as long as possible, reduce our demand for raw materials, and cut down the amount of e-waste we’re generating. It’s wonderful to see Logitech working towards those goals, and we’re beyond happy to do what we can to help.”

The iFixit Logitech Repair Hub will be the source for genuine replacement parts and batteries for our chosen launch products of Logitech MX Master and MX Anywhere mouse models. Parts will be available as standalone or in Fix Kits that contain everything needed to complete a repair such as the replacement part, tools, and a precision bit set. Genuine Logitech replacement parts for these devices will become available for purchase starting this summer in the US.

Logitech is taking action and investing in ways to innovate by designing for sustainability and developing circular models that reduce waste and extend life, such as trade-in and refurbishment programs, and also using recycled materials. Recently, Logitech also accelerated its climate action strategy and has set itself on a direct path to be climate positive beyond 2030 by capturing more carbon than it creates. It is also the first consumer electronics company to commit to providing detailed carbon impact labeling on product packaging and online across the entire portfolio. Learn more about all of Logitech’s sustainability initiatives in the FY22 Impact Report or on the website.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass., May 17, 2023 /3BL Media/ – U.S. corporations continued to communicate on a wide range of sustainability topics in the first quarter of 2023, despite signs that environmental, social and governance (ESG) will be a divisive issue in the 2024 presidential election, according to research from 3BL.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion was the leading topic, but fell slightly to 311 flexible media releases (FMRs) distributed by 3BL from January through March, versus 315 in the same period a year earlier.

“Claims of greenwashing appear to be overblown, though there is evidence that brands may not be communicating externally as much on social equity topics as they have over the past three years,” said Dave Armon, CEO of 3BL, whose 3BL Professional software platform distributes sustainability news on behalf of hundreds of companies and nonprofits to a global audience of investors, employee recruitment sites, consumers, ratings agencies and other stakeholders.

Stories about Philanthropy & Cause Initiatives rose 16 percent to 242 from 208 in the first quarter, versus the same period in 2022. A similar pattern was noted during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when companies announced commitments to build ventilators and supply medical workers with personal protective equipment.

The narrative from corporate America about Responsible Business & Employee Engagement grew 29 percent, from 156 to 202, the 3BL content analysis revealed.

The steepest first-quarter increase in any topic category involved companies referencing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – up 147 percent from 30 FMRs in 2022 to 74 from in the recent quarter.

“This September will mark the halfway point for the SDGs, which were launched in 2015 to enlist businesses, NGOs and governments to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity,” said Armon. “We’re seeing more communication about the SDGs ahead of that.”

The slight plateau in messaging concerning diversity, equity and inclusion followed several years of steady growth. The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in May 2020 prompted dozens of corporate statements condemning police brutality and racism, and marked the first support of Black Lives Matter by the business community.
