When Olwi Abzueta learned a school in her community in the Dominican Republic (DR) needed help, she knew she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to make a difference.

When she joined Medtronic as an engineer in 2017, her colleagues in the DR often volunteered in the community, but there wasn’t a formal process for getting involved. To help, Abzueta joined a committee and led volunteers to do more.

With each effort, the team logged their hours with the Medtronic Foundation. The small – but mighty –  team continued to take on new projects, but found itself hitting barriers when trying to engage a majority of the local workforce.

In efforts to engage manufacturing employees in the DR and Mexico, the Medtronic Foundation reached out with an opportunity with Glasswing International, an organization that addresses the root causes and consequences of poverty through education and health programs that empower youth and communities.

For Abzueta, the goal was to make a local school feel like a safe and inviting place that could also function as a community center for families – many of whom work at Medtronic.

Almost 200 employees in Mexico and the DR came together to give three schools a makeover in three days. A majority of volunteers were manufacturing employees. They painted, built – and filled – bookshelves, and planted trees.

Revitalizing schools is about more than beautification. Studies show that a safe, healthy learning environment promotes attendance and helps students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

And that matters in areas that have historically been under-funded, where kids can end up dropping out of school to find – sometimes dangerous – ways to support their families.

“That’s the impact of a project like this,” said Mark Loyka, U.S. country director for Glasswing International.

Glasswing was founded to get community members involved in volunteerism. As Loyka puts it, “Who knows the community better than the community?”

“We empower people to have that agency in their own community to drive change,” he said. “They want to make change and have local knowledge, plus there is a real community pride when you have a school that not only looks good but has the resources for the students to thrive.”

And with the support of the Medtronic Foundation, which funded the initiative, Abzueta and her committee of local employee volunteers feel like they can do even more.

“It’s a lot of work,” she said. “But now with the help of a strong community, I don’t feel alone even if the goal feels unattainable.”

Even after the school makeovers wrapped up, the new relationship with Glasswing International, the local schools, and employees was just the beginning. They have stayed in touch and continue to deepen their efforts with Glasswing International – empowering communities and transforming lives.

TAMPA, June 26, 2023 /3BL/ – The University of South Florida (USF) and Truist Foundation are addressing the talent and workforce needs of the manufacturing industry through an onsite certificate program in East Tampa. To facilitate this multiyear effort that will benefit local residents and small to large manufacturers, Truist Foundation has awarded The University of South Florida Foundation a $684,000 grant, the foundation’s largest gift to the USF Foundation to date.

With Truist Foundation’s support, USF is developing and will implement an “Introduction to Production Systems” certificate program to train the future manufacturing workforce in high-demand skillsets with the goal of enhancing the economic mobility of participants. The program will take place in East Tampa, which is a predominantly African American and Hispanic community, where the median family income is $35,179 and nearly one-third of the population is below poverty level, according to the U.S. Census American Community Survey. USF is collaborating with community partners to offer access to career development and financial literacy resources to those participating in the certificate program to support pathways from certification to sustainable careers in the field.

“Manufacturing is a critical sector for our state and regional economy that continues to grow. The sector provides workers with competitive pay, the ability to continue to learn new skills and the opportunity of a meaningful career,” said Iwan Mohamed, West Florida regional president for Truist. “Truist’s purpose is to inspire and build better lives and communities, and we believe investing in USF’s new manufacturing certificate program will do just that by creating career pathways and economic mobility.”

The program will foster streamlined pathways to existing employment opportunities within Tampa Bay’s growing manufacturing sector. The Tampa Bay region is one of Florida’s key manufacturing clusters. The region is especially strong in the production of machinery and metal products, plastic and rubber products, computers and electronics, and food and beverage. Companies in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties alone contribute more than 60,000 jobs to the sector. Florida has experienced the 2nd highest growth in manufacturing jobs across the nation.

“This partnership will contribute to our vision of establishing workforce development initiatives that benefit the East Tampa community and serves as a major step toward our goal of enabling smart manufacturing innovation in the region,” said principal investigator Nancy Diaz-Elsayed of USF’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. “We are very grateful to Truist Foundation for this generous gift, which will serve to accelerate Tampa’s manufacturing capabilities.”

The initial two years of the certificate initiative’s launch will allow USF to establish and pilot the program. USF will collaborate with community and industry partners to develop an introductory manufacturing certificate curriculum that addresses the local manufacturing industry’s need for skilled talent through a recruitment effort that targets East Tampa residents.

“Certificate programs like this one provide a pathway into high-demand careers with greater earning potential for East Tampa residents,” said Craig J. Richard, CEcD, President and CEO of Tampa Bay Economic Development Council. “As the manufacturing industry continues to grow in this region, so will the opportunities for workers who can build on their skills and find plentiful options for high wage employment.”

Fundamentals in manufacturing processes, automation technology, and robotics will be the program’s focus areas to offer training relevant to the discrete production industry in the region, which includes metalworking, plastics, electronics, aerospace, and food manufacturing. “Our goal is to recruit a 15- to 30-participant pilot cohort in the first year and grow the program in years two and three,” said Diaz-Elsayed, whose USF project team includes Alexandro Castellanos and Redwan Alqasemi.

“I want to thank Truist and Truist Foundation for their partnership and vision in helping to fund this vital workforce development program in East Tampa,” said USF Foundation CEO Jay Stroman. “The benefits to our community members, manufacturers, and our regional and state economy will be felt for many years to come.”

Community leaders in northeastern Utah have honored an emissions reduction program of Marathon Petroleum’s midstream segment, MPLX, that targets leak emissions of methane. The Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce recognized the proactive program, which goes beyond federal regulatory requirements for natural gas gathering and processing facilities. The program has steadily lowered the need for leak repairs over the past three years.

Business and community leaders in northeastern Utah are praising Marathon Petroleum’s midstream segment, MPLX, for limiting leak emissions of methane in the state’s Uinta Basin. MPLX’s Natural Gas Gathering and Processing (G&P) component recently received an Environmental and Safety Award from the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce in recognition of a proactive leak detection and repair (LDAR) program that goes beyond federal regulatory requirements.

Current federal regulations mandate an LDAR program only for certain compressor stations based upon their construction dates. G&P, however, regularly monitors for leak emissions of methane in the basin at its Iron Horse gas processing complex and all five compressor stations (12 total compressors) that send raw natural gas to the complex.

“The amount of natural gas we are moving has dramatically increased in the past two years, but our leak numbers continue to drop,” said Senior Environmental Technician Megan Horrocks, who is responsible for quarterly LDAR surveys of all the facilities. “More than just repairing leaks, it’s about being proactive when starting up units that have not run for a while to check for leaks before they are running, and going the extra mile to ensure leaks in other equipment do not develop in the first place.”

Finding the unseen

All potential leak indications via sight, sound or smell are checked out. Methane is a colorless and odorless component of natural gas, so pinpointing it requires Horrocks to use a thermal-imaging camera that detects 19 different gases emitting infrared waves the human eye can’t see.

Since the LDAR program began three years ago, the need for leak repairs beyond federal monitoring requirements has steadily declined. The chamber of commerce award follows recognition two years ago from Utah’s Department of Natural Resources for the program’s initial success in 2020.

The LDAR program is part of G&P’s broader Focus on Methane initiative to voluntarily lower methane emissions intensity across all operations 50% by 2025 and 75% by 2030 from 2016 levels.

ATLANTA, June 26, 2023 /3BL/ – There is a universe of infrastructure under every major street in America – everything from natural gas pipelines to water and sewer lines, cable, fiber optics and electrical lines. In recognition of its efforts to promote safe digging near natural gas pipeline infrastructure, Southern Company Gas is honored to win the 2023 Southern Gas Association Corporate Communications Award.

Launched in August 2022, Southern Company Gas and its operating companies got in the trenches alongside the National Excavator Initiative that brought along one of America’s most trusted personalities, executive producer, Emmy-winning host, bestselling author, podcaster and skilled-trades advocate, Mike Rowe. Mike’s animated alter ego, micro Mike Rowe, joined to spread the word on the importance of calling 811 to have utility lines marked before you dig.

“The safety of our employees, customers, communities and our pipeline infrastructure is our number one value. People are flooded with ads every day, and so in order to capture our customers’ and third-party contractors’ attention and impart the importance of safe digging, we sought to highlight this topic in a new, creative way,” said Bryan Batson, executive vice president of external affairs and chief external and public affairs officer, Southern Company Gas.

Southern Company Gas delivered a fully integrated digital and traditional media campaign backed by company data that garnered 422 million+ impressions to achieve the company’s second best-year for reductions in total pipeline damage ratio. Total damage ratio is the number of damages to the company’s pipeline infrastructure per 1,000 location tickets assigned to utility repair teams.

“We have been working on this initiative for a number of years and couldn’t be prouder about the outcome,” commented Lindsay Sander, president of the National Excavator Initiative and Sander Resources. “This award is a testament to our passion and the dedication our team has for damage prevention, our clients and this critical industry.”

SGA Awards recognize members who are advancing the natural gas industry. The aim is to support and highlight the great work of companies that have achieved real, measurable business outcomes in their organizations. SGA Awards recognize individuals and teams for their technical contributions, professional excellence, career achievement, service to colleagues, industry leadership and community service. “If we want to get humanity from code red1 to code green, we must first transform ourselves, while collaborating very closely with other sectors to transform themselves, enabling all sectors and ultimately society to decarbonize.” – Rafael Cayuela, Dow Chief Economist

The Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to change every aspect of the automotive industry as we know it, from how we invest in research and development, to the way we track our carbon footprints and to how consumers pay for and use their vehicles2. All this change converges on one goal: increased efficiency and sustainability in a world confronting a global climate crisis, biodiversity loss and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This goal is what inspired the Sustainable Mobility Summit in Berlin, hosted by Dow ahead of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s Berlin E-Prix, which was designed to bring together partners and organizations spanning the mobility value chain to explore how the industry can advance the goal together. The discussion was dedicated to dissecting the transformation needed to meet the demands of this new frontier in mobility.

Transformation Revolution

The term “4th industrial revolution” was originally coined by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a digital revolution, based on increased connectivity and automation. At Dow, we prefer to refer to a “Sustainable, Digital and Social Revolution”. As the automotive industry confronts the challenges of climate change, it’s clear this shift is much bigger, encompassing several permanent sustainability and social changes. The technological advances of this new wave of innovation focus on achieving global sustainability goals.

From Dow’s perspective, that means we can contribute to this transformation for our customers and the automotive value chain by decarbonizing our industrial processes to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, while adding renewable feedstock and circular carbon products for our Scope 3 as brands like Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) electrify their vehicle fleets. Advances in materials science enable us to not only reduce carbon emissions but also allow other players along the automotive value chain to decarbonize producing a powerful, and positive, domino effect.

Collaboration Drives Sustainability Progress

Partnerships like the one between Dow and the Jaguar TCS Racing Formula E team are essential for advancing innovation. By treating the track as a high-throughput laboratory for EV technologies, we’re able to translate learnings from race to road and help keep the automotive industry on track to meet sustainability and performance goals. In short, to successfully transform in a time of unprecedented change, geopolitical risk and environmental challenges, companies must look outside themselves for expertise. Companies cannot do it all alone anymore – innovation has become a team sport.

Today, both our organizations are breaking down silos to provide better comprehensive support for all participants in the mobility ecosystem, from the design table to the road to vehicle end-of-life.

Through Dow’s global MobilityScience™ Studios, for example, OEMs and suppliers bring very specific challenges to our team of materials science experts so that we can help design custom solutions in a high-intensity innovation setting. This leads to accelerated development of materials with a reduced carbon footprint that also improve performance, just like some of those solutions deployed in the Jaguar I-TYPE 6 all-electric racecar.

For JLR, collaboration is at the heart of the company’s “Reimagine” strategy, which sets the vision to become the creators of modern luxury. This transformation is centered on sustainability, technology and services leadership. The organization prioritizes working with industry leaders across different ‘verticals’ to stay at the forefront of technology co-creation and innovation. It’s also about shaking up the automotive industry’s status quo – shifting from supply to value, from linear to circular – and bringing everyone to the design table to problem solve, together.

The “code red” given by the United Nations means that these are not just platitudes or boxes to check; they are social imperatives and business necessities that create transformative, large growth opportunities. Now, here’s the challenge: how can you prioritize this approach to transform your business so that we can accomplish the changes needed to create a safer and more sustainable future?

June 26, 2023 /3BL/ – Ceres welcomes the announcement today that the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has finalized its first two sets of reporting standards, one for general sustainability and the other for climate-related reporting. The standards, which will take effect in January 2024, establish a global baseline for corporate reporting on climate and sustainability risks and opportunities.

“The ISSB standards address the urgent need for a global baseline for measuring and evaluating climate and sustainability risks,” said Ceres CEO and President Mindy Lubber. “Sustainability factors are a vital consideration in investment decision-making. We congratulate the ISSB for their leadership in taking on the ambitious task of streamlining the reporting of those factors and encourage nations to swiftly adopt these standards.”

The finalized standards are designed to complement the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Accounting Standards, used by 167 countries worldwide. Ceres encourages governments to adopt the ISSB standards, in order to establish a consistent and comprehensive global baseline for disclosure that benefits investors, stakeholders, and companies.

The standards include features that provide essential information for investors and appropriate, selective relief to companies. This includes:

Industry-based guidance based on the SASB Standards, which provide metrics for disclosure of the sustainability issues most relevant to financial performance and enterprise value for 77 industries.Incorporating the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendationsRequiring disclosure, where material, of any transition plans that are in place, climate resilience and Scopes 1-3 emissionsRequiring disclosure aligned with the GHG Protocol, the leading emissions disclosure standard worldwideProviding relief for Scope 3 disclosure, including a temporary disclosure exemption and a Scope 3 measurement framework for that incorporates the use of estimation

“The market needs standardized climate information to illuminate the risks and opportunities for companies operating today and ensure they remain resilient in the future. The ISSB’s standards are an important mark of progress; now, securities regulators around the world need to implement these best-in-class standards to supply investors with decision-useful disclosures,” Lubber added.

Ceres has worked for decades to improve sustainability disclosure for a wide range of stakeholders including investors. Ceres co-founded the Global Reporting Initiative, the leading reporting standard for impact reporting. Members of the Ceres Investor Network and other investors have advocated for improved climate risk disclosure in U.S. financial filings since 2003. Ceres has also collaborated with the Climate Disclosure Standards Board, SASB, the International Integrated Reporting Council, and the TCFD to improve disclosure and is pleased to see their work incorporated in the ISSB’s standards.

Often seen as the unofficial start of the Short North Arts District in Columbus, Ohio, the corner of Goodale Boulevard and High Street is more than an iconic intersection. Each June, it marks the return of the Stonewall Columbus Pride March to the neighborhood and serves as the home of Pride on High, an annual event that raises thousands for local LGBTQ+ youth initiatives.

“Pride on High is the ultimate parade watching experience,” said Mike Maly, founder of Pride on High and senior manager of corporate real estate and facility services at Bread Financial. “We have shade, restrooms, food, beverages, live commentary and celebrity judges.”

Pride on High has grown from a table for two on an empty patio in 2010 to an event that welcomed more than 750 guests and raised nearly $70,000 during this year’s Pride March on Saturday, June 17. Having raised more than $600,000 in 14 years, organizers donated proceeds from the 2023 event to Stonewall Columbus, Kaleidoscope Youth Center, Equitas Health Mozaic Project and the Columbus College of Art & Design’s LGBTQ+Scholarship Fund.

“Years ago, my husband Greg and I went to watch the parade, and we noticed that a normally busy city block was completely closed,” said Mike. “We found a table to watch the parade, and the following Monday, we asked the restaurant if they would consider opening their doors next year – that’s how Pride on High was born. The decision to add a community component was easy, because I don’t want kids today to go through what Greg and I did. I want to make things better for our youth, and for everyone.”

Planning events is nothing new for Mike who, in his role with Bread Financial, oversees all facilities and ensures associates have an equitable experience, regardless of where they work. Recently, his team helped coordinate the addition of Pride flags at all Bread Financial locations.

Mike says that being an openly gay man leading a facilities team is rare, but he wants his team to know what his life is like. To him, a job well done is helping people think differently and be more kind, and he prioritizes candid dialogue and the sharing of knowledge. Outside of his role, he also participates in three of the company’s Business Resource Groups (BRGs), either as a member of the group or as an ally, so he can continue to learn about different backgrounds, cultures and experiences.

“If you don’t listen, how can you learn?” he said. “The groups [BRGs represent] don’t have a voice in many parts of the world. You never know what areas someone might be able to help you in one day, or what resources or talent they have unless you take the time to find out. I love the direction that we’re headed in with DE&I at Bread Financial – it helps us understand one another and enables us to be better.”

This past Saturday, Bread Financial served as a sponsor of both the parade and Pride on High, and as associates marched down High Street, they showed their support for both the LGBTQ+ community and their colleague, who turned an empty patio into a celebration of kindness.

“I spent so much of my life not being who I am and I moved to Columbus to be me,” Mike said. “Pride isn’t about showing people how different you are – it’s about lifting others up and not repeating hatred. We need to look through the eyes of others before we judge and act. You’ll find yourself to be a much happier person.”

In 1948, HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks in England, bringing more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean. This was a historic moment that saw mass migration and shaped modern Britain. June 22, 2023 marks its 75th anniversary. Across the UK, communities will come together to celebrate the contributions of the Windrush Generation and their families.

As a descendant of the Windrush Generation, Sonia Meggie, EMEA, D&I Client Partner for News and Media at Bloomberg, shares what Windrush Day means to her and how everyone can get involved.

This year’s Windrush Day marks 75 years since we’ve seen mass migration from the Caribbean, Africa and many other countries.

HMT Empire Windrush brought 492 passengers to the UK from Caribbean islands such as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, to help fill post-War labour shortages. Those who came in response played a critical role in those efforts, and made an enormous contribution to make the UK what it is today.

My parents are from Jamaica  and it is really important for me to know about my heritage, culture and history. My grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1950’s (ten years prior to my parents arriving) and faced discrimination and racism. They had to work really hard as a family to overcome the barriers they faced. Like many others who arrived during this period, they wanted a better life for their children.

It is unclear how many people from the Windrush generation are still in the UK, but the number is thought to be in the thousands. Their careers often started as  manual workers, cleaners, drivers, transport employees and nurses in the newly established NHS – and some broke new ground in representing Black Britons in society. They are among more than 500,000 UK residents who arrived before 1971, but it is important to note that many arrived prior to the UK’s “invitation”.

I’m really proud of my heritage and acknowledge the sacrifice it took to migrate to the UK. As a third generation descendant I understand how important it is for me to be a role model, and shine the light on those who come from my community. We have achieved many things and will continue to be positive examples for future generations.

In April 2018, it emerged that the UK Home Office had not kept the records of those granted permission to stay, and had not issued the paperwork they needed to confirm their status. It remains important to acknowledge those facing turmoil due to the Windrush scandal.

On Windrush Day, there are many ways that we can all get involved, such as visiting Bloomberg cultural partners who are hosting bespoke Windrush events such as The V&A, and the Museum of London. I’ll be volunteering with the Black Cultural Archives, who are featuring a Windrush stamp collection with Royal Mail. I will also spend time with family and friends to acknowledge and recognize all that we’ve achieved and also to celebrate our culture.

All around the UK there’ll be talks, exhibitions, and activities taking place so there are many ways for people to get involved and learn more.

CHICAGO, June 26, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Easterseals, the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of services and advocacy for 61M individuals with disabilities in the United States, has received a two-year grant of $1.3M from the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation to expand digital literacy training among young adults with disabilities in employment programs at seven Easterseals Affiliates nationwide while also funding a national study to determine digital equity and access among BIPOC populations with disabilities.

Easterseals Crossroads (Indianapolis, IN), Easterseals Washington, Easterseals Colorado, Easterseals Arkansas, Easterseals Greater Houston, Easterseals New Hampshire, and Easterseals Massachusetts will receive grants totaling $350,000 to expand digital literacy within their employment training programs for young adults with disabilities. Students ages 16-24 with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities will learn how to navigate the internet, stay safe online, communicate via email, create PowerPoint presentations, develop resumes, use assistive technology, and more.

Funding will also support a national audit and analysis of digital literacy programs offered throughout Easterseals’ network of 71 Affiliates to identify and scale digital literacy programming with the highest impact and outcomes through 2024 funding by the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation.

Finally, a national study will be underwritten to determine digital equity and access among BIPOC populations with disabilities. Working in collaboration with Easterseals Affiliates, university researchers, policymakers, and advocacy organizations, the study will identify the current state of access to technology, including broadband, as well as digital literacy and skills training for BIPOC populations with disabilities while determining markets in which digital literacy inequity is most acute and success stories that can be replicated nationally to address such inequities.

Upon completion of the study in early 2024, Easterseals and Comcast NBCUniversal will convene a Digital Equity Summit to share study findings and recommendations to address disparities in equity and access which may exist within BIPOC populations with disabilities.

“Easterseals is honored to have the opportunity to work with Comcast NBCUniversal in our shared commitment to equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities through our partnership of more than 20 years,” says Easterseals President and CEO Kendra E. Davenport. “Digital access and literacy are critical to the children and adults with disabilities, including veterans and older adults, served by Easterseals nationwide. These digital resources are essential to breaking down barriers to employment, education, transportation, healthcare, and community that people with disabilities often face.”

“Far too many people with disabilities do not have access to the digital tools and resources that will help ensure their full participation in society and life,” said Dalila Wilson-Scott, EVP & Chief Diversity Officer, Comcast Corporation and President of Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation.

“We are so pleased to further our partnership with Easterseals to deliver essential digital training and further equitable employment outcomes for young adults with disabilities.”
