This year, building on decades of support for its LGBTQ+ employees and the community at large, Bloomberg celebrated Pride at offices around the world. Inclusion has long been a tenant of its foundation.

Consistently ranked as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ+ Equality by the Human Rights Campaign, Bloomberg LP has earned a perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index for six years in a row.

“Pride is a month-long celebration, but the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition doesn’t end in June. We’re committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion year-round at Bloomberg,” said founder Mike Bloomberg, who has championed LGBTQ+ rights for decades across his work in business, government, and philanthropy. He was an early advocate for legalizing same-sex marriage and, as mayor, officiated the first same-sex marriage in New York City on the day it became legal in New York State in 2011.

The company has led on key LGBTQ+ issues around the globe, such as marriage equality. In addition to signing onto an amicus brief in the 2015 US Supreme Court case of Obergefell v. Hodges, Bloomberg has also supported local efforts in Japan and Hong Kong seeking to legalize marriage equality for the LGBTQ+ community. In particular, the firm has been the Signature Sponsor of the Hong Kong Marriage Equality campaign for the last two years.

In Japan, work with Pride has recognized Bloomberg with three consecutive Gold Awards in the PRIDE Index, which measures the increasing role companies play in the promotion of understanding LGBTQ+ issues and protecting LGBTQ+ rights in Japanese society. It has also awarded Bloomberg its “Rainbow” certification in recognition of the company’s cross-sector collaboration in support of LGBTQ+-related initiatives.

An early adopter of the United Nations’ Standards of Conduct for Business tackling discrimination against and unfair treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people in the workplace, Bloomberg was also an early signer of the Business Statement for Transgender Equality, which was issued in 2018 by 18 LGBTQ+ community organizations, led by Out Leadership and the Human Rights Campaign.

Ahead of a flood of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation recently proposed across the U.S., Bloomberg signed the Human Rights Campaign’s Business Statement on Anti-LGBTQ State Legislation, stating its clear opposition to any and all harmful legislation aimed at restricting the rights of LGBTQ+ people.

And this week, Bloomberg is among leading U.S. companies that signed the Count Us In Pledge to stand proudly and publicly as LGBTQ+ allies, while calling on lawmakers to end all discriminatory attacks on the LGBTQ+ community.

Bloomberg also supports The Equality Act and was among the first companies to join the Human Rights Campaign’s Business Coalition for The Equality Act, a group now numbering more than 530 major U.S. companies – representing over 15.9 million employees – who support the act. Reintroduced in Congress earlier this month, this proposed federal legislation would guarantee LGBTQ+ people nationwide the same comprehensive anti-discrimination protections and basic freedoms in the workplace, housing, credit, medical care, and more that other protected groups have enjoyed for decades under U.S. federal law.

The company has long provided benefits in the U.S. and beyond for domestic partners regardless of gender, as well as providing the full suite of health benefits recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health’s Standards of Care for employees in the U.S. and around the world.

Corporate Philanthropy at Bloomberg also proudly supports nonprofits around the globe that share the company’s commitment to inclusion, active allyship, and advocacy for key LGBTQ+ issues, including those providing specialized support for LGBTQ+ refugees, homeless individuals, and youth.

This year also marks 10 years since the founding of Bloomberg’s LGBT and Ally Community (BPROUD). The employee resource group advocates within the firm and in the broader business community for inclusive and equitable working spaces and career opportunities. One of BPROUD’s early advocates is Bloomberg Chairman Peter Grauer, who has been recognized as a top ally for the LGBTQ+ community.

To mark this year’s Pride, Bloomberg’s global BPROUD chapters either hosted or participated in many different events. Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, São Paulo, Washington, DC, New York, London, Mumbai, and Tokyo are just a few.

In early June, the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus a capella group “TONEWALL” kicked off Pride with a performance at Bloomberg’s global headquarters in New York. Also, for New York’s Pride weekend the top of Bloomberg’s global headquarters at 731 Lexington Avenue was lit up with Pride colors as a reminder of how far the fight for LGBTQ+ inclusion has come, and how Bloomberg stands with the community.

BPROUD also hosted producer, model, and transgender rights activist Geena Rocero at Bloomberg’s global headquarters in New York to talk about her new memoir “Horse Barbie.” Bloomberg News reporter Isabelle Lee interviewed Rocero, who shared her candid reflections from the heights of the Philippines trans pageant scene and moving to the U.S. to work as a fashion model in New York.

Working with BPROUD, Bloomberg also recently launched online training on Transgender Allyship that provides practical tips and advice on how to be a better ally to this community and is available for all employees.

Bloomberg is committed to playing an important role in continuing to build an inclusive and supportive workplace. Inclusion means all of us.

Beyond Hometown Grants, the Un‑carrier is turning rural America magenta by helping to bridge the digital divide, expand connectivity, deliver essential wireless services and more.

BELLEVUE, Wash., June 30, 2023 /3BL/ – T-Mobile just named 25 more recipients of its Hometown Grant program, marking 200 towns supported throughout the United States since the start of 2021. The initiative is part of the Un-carrier’s greater effort to connect rural areas and empower communities.

Why it matters: T-Mobile’s Hometown Grants initiative shows big love for small towns, driving positive change in communities nationwide by funding $25 million in projects over a massive 5-year commitment.

What they’re saying: “It’s been two years since we pledged to champion small towns across America, which nearly 50 million people in our nation call home,” said Jon Freier, President, Consumer Group, T-Mobile. “Since then, we expanded our 5G network by nearly 400 thousand square miles to reach more rural communities and provided more than two million households affordable Internet access with T-Mobile 5G Internet. And that’s all on top of breathing new life into main streets everywhere with Hometown Grants.”

Who it’s for: Everyone with big ideas to strengthen their communities.

Today, T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced its next round of Hometown Grant recipients, reaching a milestone of 200 towns. With projects focused on revamping outdoor spaces, building event venues, providing Wi-Fi connectivity and more, the latest 25 recipients will begin turning ideas into reality with help from the Un-carrier.

T-Mobile 5G spans 326 million people across two million square miles — more than AT&T and Verizon combined. With super-fast Ultra Capacity 5G, 275 million people are already covered, and the Un-carrier plans to reach 300 million people with Ultra Capacity — nearly everyone in the country — this year.Creating jobs. With 600 T-Mobile stores opening between 2020 and 2024, the Un-carrier is becoming a more familiar sight in communities nationwide, providing thousands of people with jobs and a more personalized experience for customers.Empowering Students with Connectivity. Every year, June marks Pride Month, a time dedicated to celebrating and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community. The theme for 2023, ‘Strength in Solidarity’, highlights the community’s cultural significance while also highlighting each individual’s uniqueness and how we can wield tremendous power when we unite with others for a good cause.

As Pierric Chabat, Marketing Manager at VMware, highlights, Pride Month not only gives us an opportunity to celebrate Pride, but also reflect on the trials and tribulations that members of the LGBTQIA+ community have had to endure in the past as well as the progress that’s been made in recent years. “It’s important to keep celebrating Pride Month to recognize all the efforts and fights people had to put on just so we can exist in the public space without fear of repercussions,” he shares.

Anca Titu, Manager, Deal Management Team and Pride@VMware Ireland co-chair at VMWare, notes that Pride Month is also a great opportunity for allies to get involved. “Being present and showing support is a perfect start to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and a first step in becoming an ally,” she says.

“Being an ally is an easy but important thing to do,” agrees James Hogan, Senior Director, NEMEA End-User Computing. “Don’t be afraid of asking the wrong question either. Genuine interest and questions that come from a good place, are part of how we all learn and support each other.”

Read on to hear more from Pierric, Anca and James on what Pride means to them, the importance of allyship and why they believe that technology companies such as VMware are well-placed to help promote equality.

Q: What does ‘Pride’ mean to you? Why do you think it’s important for us to celebrate Pride Month?

Pierric: To me, Pride means that we can unconditionally be ourselves, embrace and honor who we are, and bring visibility to the different members of our community. For a long time, we were not allowed to do so, and sadly it is still the case in many parts of the world to this day.

I have the privilege to live in a place where I feel little to no discrimination in my day-to-day life, but this should not be perceived as a privilege but a basic human right.

Anca: For me “Pride” stands for solidarity, safety, equality and affirmation. Solidarity is hugely important, because as humans, we feel the need to be connected and accepted by those around us. And while it may not seem like much at first, standing by each other and showing support can make a world of difference.

Safety and equality are basic human rights, but unfortunately for many LGBTQ+ people this is still not a reality, and we must do what we can to ensure this does not stay a dream. As for affirmation, I believe that is one of the reasons Pride Month is so significant to the LGBTQ+ community as it gives its members and allies the chance to do just that.

James: Pride for me means the ability for everyone to be themselves without judgement and to be included. I believe that we have come so far as a society but that is only my view as a straight privileged male. Celebrating Pride should be every day and I love that we have a Pride month to really celebrate everything that makes us unique and to remind everyone on the journey ahead.

Q: How can employees support the LGBTQIA+ community and become an ally? Are there any specific activities or event that employees can participate in to show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community?

Anca: Being present and showing support is a perfect start to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and a first step in becoming an ally. The VMware Pride Month events are also a great opportunity, with everything from trainings, speaker series and fun events.

The PRIDE@VMware POD is also always looking to expand the circle. We have many ways for folks to get involved, stay up to date with events and service-learning opportunities or even join the POD and become an active member. As this year’s theme says, there is Strength in Solidarity.

James: I always consider whether we are seen as a company where people can “bring their whole self to work”. I believe we have made strides, but we must keep challenging ourselves. Only by standing in someone else’s shoes can we feel some of what needs to be achieved. This is why being an ally is so critical.

Pierric: Document yourself and do your research. Everyone has different experiences and boundaries, don’t assume, but ask questions instead. Using someone’s correct pronouns, or not assuming the gender of someone’s partner, may not sound like much but it can make a big difference to someone.

If you have the capacity, donate money or your time to charities and organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community and rights. If you witness harassment, or even someone making an uncomfortable joke or unsolicited comment, be vocal about it. We should not let discrimination slide.

Q: What role can technology companies such as VMware play in helping advance LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity on a broader scale?

Pierric: Companies such as VMware can influence and prescribe the right behavior that other companies or organization should adopt.

Going beyond the current legislature and offering the same protection, rights, and benefits that all the other employees can deserve. Some places don’t mandate companies to offer the same right and benefits as our straight counterparts, such as parental leaves, family planning assistance, healthcare, etc.

Corporations should provide a safe space, allowing everyone to bring their authentic self to the office.

Anca: Companies such as VMware can play a great role when it comes to supporting LGBTQIA+ community, as well as all the other minorities. First of all, effective goals and key objectives centered around diversity, equity and inclusion can help ensure an inclusive and safe culture, where everyone can bring their true self – this has fantastic benefits for both employees and the company overall.

Secondly, a few examples from VMware would be the Mental Health resources and Take-a-Break days available, the efforts to promote self-ID (voluntary self-identification), legislation that support the LGBTQIA+ community in various parts of the globe, as well as internal policies that grant equality and support to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Q: What advice would you give to LGBTQIA+ individuals who are aspiring to pursue a career in the technology industry? Are there any resources or communities that you would recommend helping them navigate throughout their journey?

Anca: I would encourage anyone looking to pursue a career in the tech industry to take leap as it can a hugely rewarding career, especially in a company that values diversity, equity and inclusion the way the VMware community does. In terms of resources, there are annual reports that rank DE&I efforts in global companies, and they are a great indicator of the culture of those companies. Also, dedicated communities such as myGwork, with whom VMware has partnered in recent years, are a great way for members of the LGBTQIA+ community to connect in the professional space.

Pierric: The technology industry is probably one of the most inclusive industries I have had the chance to work in. We still have a long way to go to achieve global equality, but I feel that the IT field is rapidly becoming more diverse and inclusive. I have always felt comfortable about who I am in the office, and open with my colleagues to the fact that I’m part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

June 29, 2023 /3BL/ – The Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) calls upon corporate decision makers to reiterate and advance their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), despite today’s U.S. Supreme Court rulings overturning affirmative action policies in college admissions. In this moment, HACR underscores the crucial role corporate America plays in the defense of equitable and inclusive policies, from early career to the C-suite and corporate boards.

“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court rulings on affirmative action in college admissions send the absolute wrong message on the critical importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion given the racial and ethnic inequalities that have existed throughout our American society from the founding of our nation through today,” said HACR President and CEO, Cid Wilson. “Corporate America cannot and should not use these ruling as a signal to roll back equitable initiatives. On the contrary, corporate America must double-down on this work in all areas of their businesses. Only through the fervent protection of our collective aspirations for an equitable society can we truly embody the values and vision upon which our great country stands.”

Data across all industries demonstrate we do not live in a race-neutral society. Today’s ruling is a call to action to everyone – especially to corporate America – to focus on systemic change in our organizational systems through policies and practices that protect equitable access to opportunity, influence, and decision making.

HACR will continue to elevate its voice in the call for greater Hispanic inclusion as well as overall DEI in corporate America, while urging the elimination of inequalities that have led to the significant marginalization of underrepresented communities. Whether it’s in employment, procurement, philanthropy, or governance, corporate America must proactively promote DEI in all segments of their operations.

“We urge corporate leaders to remain committed to racial equity,” said HACR Board Chair, Ramiro Cavazos, who is also President & CEO of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “It is imperative that corporations remain steadfast in their dedication to fostering equitable opportunities for all individuals from underrepresented communities. In doing so, they not only drive business growth, but also contribute to the overall betterment of our society.”

HACR urges corporate leaders to take bold actions that will promote lasting inclusive changes not only within corporate offices, but within the greater communities in which they operate. HACR’s mission is as important today as it was in the year of its founding, 1986. Together, we can shape a future where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or underrepresented identity.

Last week, I had the honor of participating in the opening events for Cellphone: Unseen Connections, the new exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The exhibition explores the technological, environmental and cultural impact of cellphones.

The story told in this exhibition is not just about cellphones. It’s about what they unlock. While they started out as a way to make phone calls from wherever you could find a signal, today these devices – along with the performance and coverage of the network that connects them – are essential to our lives.

T-Mobile discovered early on that cellphones would enable connectivity in a whole new way. Our iconic Sidekick – the first “all-in-one” device – disrupted the industry in 2002 with messaging, photos and music. Although we couldn’t predict everything a cellphone might do at the time, it was clear that our brand and network were going to transform the way we connect.

In recent years, we have not only seen but also helped drive the continued evolution of computing. Smartphones have become increasingly powerful with new capabilities enabled by advancements in wireless connectivity, making it possible to access the internet and run complex applications from anywhere in the world … and it’s always in the palm of our hands. This has led to a dramatic increase in connectivity as people are now able to stay connected with friends, family and coworkers, no matter where they are.

Our economy is also increasingly digital. How we do business, learn and live are all heavily influenced by advanced technologies like 5G. But there’s a catch: digital economies worldwide won’t prosper, and enterprises won’t thrive, if we don’t address the digital divide – the gap between those with and those without reliable access to the internet. According to the Federal Communications Commission, more than 8.3 million U.S. homes and businesses lack access to high-speed broadband. This issue is particularly concerning in rural and underserved communities, according to a Pew Research survey which found that these two groups are less likely to have internet access. The “racial tech gap” largely threatens Black and Hispanic workers who may be unprepared and under-skilled for jobs (and careers) in the digital economy.

As a company whose mission is to become the best in the world at connecting customers to their world, nothing’s more gratifying than helping bridge the nationwide digital divide. Our ongoing commitment to deliver reliable connectivity in practically every corner of the nation – with great value – to those who previously lacked choice, has resulted in increased 5G coverage in rural areas by 90% over the past three years.

Another way T-Mobile is tackling this challenge is through Project 10Million, our $10.7 billion initiative aimed at closing the digital divide in education by offering free internet connectivity and mobile hotspots to up to 10 million eligible student households across the U.S. Since 2020, we’ve connected more than 5.3 million students with high-speed connectivity through Project 10Million and our other education initiatives.

We also participate in the Affordable Connectivity Program, which offers low-income families and other groups a discount on broadband service and devices. The subsidy goes directly to participating ISPs, creating a stable source of revenue and mitigating risks to investment in building networks in high-cost areas.

As president of T-Mobile Technology Group, I see how T-Mobile’s 5G network and connectivity solutions improve operational efficiency, help realize cost savings and unlock productivity for businesses. Take health care, where we saw exponential growth of telehealth during the pandemic. Connectivity, more than ever, became a lifeline for patients in rural or underserved areas and for those who were homebound. With connected wireless clinics, doctors and other providers can easily tap into their patient’s information in real-time to deliver virtual care.

The evolution of computing, wireless networks and connectivity is a truly remarkable story, and it is one that is still being written. I am excited to see what the future holds, and T-Mobile is committed to making sure everyone has the opportunity to participate in it.

Lily Cobo, Planter Research Agronomist at CNH Industrial brand Case IH, grew up in the suburbs of Chicago with little knowledge of farming. It didn’t stop her from working in Ag, though. She was always drawn to careers that allowed her to use her hands while being outdoors, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in the industry.

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University, Cobo continued her education and obtained a Master of Science from Northern Illinois University.

“I realized that agriculture could be incorporated into that when I decided to go to Iowa State University, where I started taking classes related to environmental science,” she said.

Cobo’s story is extraordinary in that she has achieved success in the agricultural sector without any direct experience. She has progressed from being a naturalist to a member of a farm crew and is now one of CNH Industrial’s female agronomists. Cobo has gone on to participate in CNH Industrial’s Tech Day, where she demonstrated the entirety of the crop cycle alongside her colleagues to stakeholders, investors, and the media.
