RALEIGH, N.C., July 20, 2023 /3BL/ – Lenovo announced the North American edition of Work For Humankind, a bold initiative that uses technology for volunteers to make a positive, long-lasting difference while working from remote, tech-enabled locations.

The Work for Humankind Research Report found that nearly 90% of U.S. respondents find giving back to the community vital when “Working from Anywhere.” Work For Humankind North America extends the legacy started on Robinson Crusoe Island, allowing North American skilled individuals to use tech for good and make a positive impact while working from anywhere.

In partnership with the non-profit, BirdLife International, Lenovo created a mobile tech lab and living space that will road trip through Canada and the United States, collecting birdsong data along the way to support wildlife protection efforts.

The mobile workspace, enabled with 5G connectivity, equips volunteers to do their day jobs while monitoring wildlife using seminal data collection software in partnership with Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology.

The Americas are home to three of the nine major migratory bird flyways in the world, making this region pivotal to global biodiversity and climate change mitigation. BirdLife and its local partners identified specific Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) within North America where Work for Humankind can bolster its efforts to protect the flyways and migratory species who depend on these special places. IBAs are places of greatest significance for the conservation of the world’s birds and wildlife.

Volunteers will drive between designated IBAs along the route and stop at wildlife refuges in South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New York and Ontario. The van’s path was designed to visit IBAs with high priority nesting species, such as the endangered Saltmarsh Sparrow, where data is much-needed by both BirdLife International and their partners. Capturing this birdsong data, along with visual identification of birds, is crucial to conservation efforts to protect the bird species and biodiversity in each local ecosystem.

The van is designed to meet all volunteers’ living and working needs, with the highest quality “van life” and workspace amenities. Volunteers will work their day jobs remotely via Lenovo’s technology hub. The van itself will be a ‘smart home’ with a Lenovo Smart Tab M8 Gen 3 mounted to the van’s side, serving as a control panel for the technology throughout the vehicle. The mobile setup will also include an integrated Lenovo ThinkSmart Camera, ThinkSmart Bar, ThinkPad P1 mobile workstation laptop, and ThinkVision P40w-20 monitor. Volunteers can work wherever it’s most convenient for them.

Emily Ketchen, Vice President and CMO of Intelligent Devices Group and International Markets, Lenovo, comments:

“Building off the success of Work For Humankind in South America, we were inspired to bring its mission to more parts of the globe. Lenovo is committed to using technology to build more meaningful experiences for all and we look forward to continuing to demonstrate the power of using tech for good.”

Gerald Youngblood, Chief Marketing Officer North America, Lenovo, comments:

“We jumped at the opportunity to bring Work For Humankind’s inspiring mission to North America. We have a duty to make a positive impact wherever we do business, and Work For Humankind exemplifies this. The van traveling North America will extend BirdLife International’s ability to capture and analyze birdsong data – showcasing how technology can be a force for good.”

E.J. McAdams, Executive Director, Friends of BirdLife International, comments:

“BirdLife International is excited to partner with Lenovo on this compelling application of data collection science. The data collected by these volunteers will provide important insights for nature conservation in BirdLife’s Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas and will inform how we work to protect bird species for the next generation. Running on Lenovo’s computing power, the van has become a tool of citizen science and research, greatly increasing the number of datapoints we can capture.”

Upon completion of this journey, Lenovo will donate the Work For Humankind van to BirdLife so that future generations of conservationists can benefit from the use of this mobile technology lab.

Climate Confident

Hey everyone, Tom Raftery here with another enlightening episode of Climate Confident! This time, we’re diving deep into the circular economy with none other than Stephen Jamieson, Global Head of Circular Economy Solutions at SAP whose voice might just remind you of a famous actor – can you guess who?

Stephen gives us an in-depth view of how businesses and regulations are shifting focus to circular strategies, specifically in plastics and packaging. Trust me, you’ll be as astounded as I was to learn just how big an impact we’ve made (or rather, not made) in becoming a circular economy. Stephen’s insights are a must-hear for all climate change advocates.

We also discuss the implications of these strategies, from biodiversity loss to human health. As Stephen points out, it’s not just about waste management but also climate change, and even our personal health!

Key to this episode is understanding how businesses are measuring compliance to these new regulations. It’s a complex process, and Stephen does an amazing job explaining how technology is aiding in understanding and managing these metrics.

One of the standout parts of our conversation was hearing about businesses responding to these changes. We talk about concrete examples – even my personal observation about my favorite beer in Spain ditching plastic rings for cardboard holders!

We also look into the future. What comes next in this drive towards a more circular economy? Stephen’s thoughts on this are as compelling as they are insightful.

So tune in, and while you’re at it, try and guess which famous actor Stephen’s voice reminds you of. I’ll give you a clue, he’s quite charming!

Join us in this enlightening conversation as we explore how businesses, regulations, and technology intertwine in the race towards a circular economy. I promise you’ll walk away not just more climate confident, but also entertained!

ST. PAUL, Minn., July 20, 2023 /3BL/ – Antea Group consultants Caron Koll and Jack Sheldon collaborated with the American Bar Association (ABA) to give their insights on intentional and unintentional PFAS sources in products and the potential product liability lawsuits that could ensue. The article, titled “Product liability and intentionally—versus unintentionally—added PFAS,” was published in the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources.

Koll and Sheldon share in the article that, “Identifying per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in products sold in commerce is a challenge. When they are found, however, product liability lawsuits often follow and result in substantial settlements. Three chemical manufacturing companies, Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva, announced on June 2 that they will settle at $1.185 billion that “forever chemicals” were used in manufacturing and then contaminated U.S. public water systems serving a “vast majority” of the country’s population. This may only be the beginning, as lawsuits targeting chemical manufacturers and suppliers are expected to increase when perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and potentially seven other PFAS are classified as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).”

They also noted that, “A limited number of manufacturers have voluntarily reported PFAS in their products. Rigorous testing by researchers around the world, including the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have identified PFAS in many products. However, manufacturers may discover in some instances that PFAS were added unintentionally to their products at some point during their manufacturing, packaging, or storage.”

Nothing but blue skies ahead for Vanilla, a 29-year-old chimpanzee who spent her earlier years in a biomedical research laboratory in New York with no access to sunlight or time outside. With help from FedEx, Vanilla was transported with six other chimpanzees, known as the Sunrise Seven, from the Wildlife Waystation in California to Save The Chimps in Florida. Before arriving in Florida, Vanilla and the rest of the Sunrise Seven, many of whom were rescued from biomedical research facilities or the entertainment industry, lived in terrible conditions. Save The Chimps is providing Vanilla a true sanctuary where she can roam in a natural setting with other chimpanzees for the rest of her life.

As a part of her acclimation to a new environment and friends, Vanilla was first quarantined and then introduced to different groups of chimpanzees to see who she blended best with. Vanilla has joined the Air Force group — a troop of chimps that are the offspring of primates used by NASA and the U.S. Air Force. Her days are filled with roaming, leisurely naps, and lots of sunshine with her newfound friends.

“Vanilla has a long future; she can live here for another 30 or 40 years,” Dan Mathews, Save The Chimps, said. “She seems glad to have her own world, to finally have the closest thing to a natural habitat. She is embracing it.”

Reaching Our Future Associates

To foster our ICARE culture and enable associates to achieve their aspirations through opportunity and development, Avantor focuses on attracting associates who have a shared passion for discovery and furthering our mission and Science for Goodness. To engage and attract top talent, our Global Talent Acquisition Team is continually evolving our global talent acquisition and development programs. Avantor’s commitment to inclusivity begins with the candidate sourcing process. In the past year, we:

Launched our new Talent Marketing Framework focused entirely on the candidate experience providing the right information, at the right time and in the right places – at scale to our associates worldwide
Created new outreach resources to engage candidates earlier in their job search
Updated our “Careers” pages on Avantor’s website resulting in increased number of applicants responding to job posts
Onboarded new recruitment partners, localized our recruiting approach and continued use of a robust job posting analysis tool to both identify biased language and offer appropriate replacement suggestions. Ensuring inclusive language in job posts continues to attract more diverse as well as new candidate pools, including candidates in marginalized populations

As result of these efforts:

We placed more than 4,600 new hires across all geographies where Avantor operates, including the Americas, Europe and AMEA
Nearly one-third of new hires came from direct Avantor associate referrals – including family, friends and former colleagues
The second highest hire rate came from internal Avantor candidates moving into new roles
We increased female applicants for Director-level and above job posts by 173% year over year
We hosted four job fairs for applicants with military experience and sourced 40 candidates
An optimized job post platform helped increase diverse candidates by 67%

Southwire’s plant located in Villa Rica, Ga., has been recertified as a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star site from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).

OSHA’s VPP recognize employers and workers in the private industry and federal agencies that have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintain injury and illness rates below national averages for their respective industries.

“We are very proud of the Villa Rica team’s accomplishment in achieving this VPP recertification,” said Jeff Kilgore, plant manager. “It shows the team’s dedication to our safety goals and continuous improvement expectations”

Obtaining this recertification means that Southwire’s Villa Rica Plant demonstrates exemplary achievement in the prevention and control of occupational safety and health hazards and development, implementation and continuous improvement of their safety and health management system.

“Our team members helped the OSHA auditor understand our manufacturing processes and determine what we could do to reduce our ergonomic risk in our Cabling Department,” said Aaron Tomko, environmental, health and safety (EHS) specialist. “On the closing day of the audit, the OSHA Auditors commented on the culture that was created and driven by team members.”

The recertification process consists of auditing four main elements of the program: worker involvement, hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis and training and management commitment.

“This recertification shows the efforts that have been put forth by team members in our facility,” said Tomko.“They take ownership and accountability for not only their safety but also their coworkers’ safety. We received the highest achievement level in the program, and it speaks volumes about the culture that was created and continues to be driven by our Villa Rica team members.”
