RESTON, Va., August 7, 2023 /3BL/ – Bryanna is an 18-year-old cancer warrior, and she loves monkeys more than anything. When Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic’s Operation Dream Maker asked Bryanna what she wanted most, she wished for a behind-the-scenes zoo experience to meet her favorite animal. Thanks to the support of donors, like CACI International Inc (NYSE: CACI), Bryanna was flown to Georgia with her family on an exclusive trip. She was able to meet a menagerie of animals and even got to hold her favorite animal – a monkey.

Operation Dream Maker is a special fund that focuses on granting wishes to children with critical illnesses whose parents and guardians currently serve, or have served, in the military. This program grants wishes to 20 children each year and provides support for military-related wishes of all children.

CACI has a long history of supporting military members, veterans, and their families through its philanthropic arm, CACI Cares. With roughly 40% of CACI’s workforce being made up of veterans, military spouses, or current members of the National Guard and Reserves, CACI Cares strives to honor these communities. As part of these ongoing efforts, CACI has made a donation to the Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic’s Operation Dream Maker to give fighters like Bryanna a chance to experience their wishes.

“CACI is proud to support Operation Dream Maker because we recognize how integral military and veteran families are to our community. We also recognize how impactful and uplifting programs like Operation Dream Maker can be in providing bright spots for children of military families who are battling critical illnesses,” said Gary Patton, CACI Vice President of Veteran and Military Affairs.

August 7, 2023 /3BL/ – As part of a cooperative agreement to develop and implement the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative, Action for Healthy Kids today announced that it is awarding nearly $30 million in subgrants to 264 school districts across 44 states and the District of Columbia, reaching students in some of our nation’s highest need schools. These funds are being provided by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.

“Students in every community deserve access to healthy and nutritious meals,” said USDA Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small. “Today’s announcement demonstrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to creating healthier, brighter futures for our children. With these funds, small and rural school districts will be able to modernize their operations and provide more nutritious meals, helping students succeed in the classroom and beyond.”

Each small and/or rural school district will receive up to $150,000 to support them in improving the nutritional quality of their meals and modernizing their operations, through efforts which could include:

Innovative staff training programs;Kitchen updates and renovations;Redesigning food preparation and service spaces;Other school-district led efforts to support school meals and school nutrition professionals.

“When we strengthen school meal quality, we strengthen child health,” said USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services Stacy Dean. “These grants are the largest targeted investment USDA has ever made for school meal programs in small and rural communities. We want to ensure every child in America has the opportunity to attend a school with high quality, nutritious meals, and this support is a step in that direction.”

An online map features the selected school districts and their grant amounts. The map will be updated on a rolling basis as school districts formalize their grant agreements.

“Offering healthier school meals is key to helping our nation’s kids get the nutrients they need today and for their long-term development,” said Action for Healthy Kids CEO Rob Bisceglie. “Through this historic investment in school nutrition, we will help school districts across the country overcome challenges and develop solutions to provide nutritious foods for the children they serve.”

USDA and Action for Healthy Kids also recently opened applications for the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Awards, which celebrate school districts that have made significant improvements to the nutritional quality of their school meals. All school districts in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands are invited to apply. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through June 30, 2025.

School districts that meet Recognition Award criteria will receive benefits such as national and local recognition; travel stipends to attend a national Healthy Meals Summit; access to diverse best practices, training activities; and more.

Action for Healthy Kids will manage the grants to school districts, Recognition Awards, and Healthy Meals Summits with the support of The Chef Ann Foundation and Rocky Mountain Center for Health Promotion and Education.

USDA’s Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative also includes the School Food System Transformation Challenge Grants, which aim to support innovation in the school meals market by increasing collaboration between schools, food producers and suppliers, and other partners. Applications for the Challenge Grants are expected to open in late 2023 or early 2024.

B-Roll: All in a Day’s Work for Nature’s Firefighters Footage

It’s an early start for some of nature’s most efficient and hungry firefighters. Their task? Gobbling up vegetation near Southern California Edison’s electrical equipment and power lines. For this hard-working crew of more than 400 firefighting goats, vegetation management comes naturally.

“As you can see, the goats are built for this,” said Sarah Hendrix, senior utility arborist with SCE’s Vegetation Management team. “Goats are agile animals that can navigate the mountainous terrain and eat all the brush they can in sight, basically 24/7 while they’re out here.”

Over the next month, the herd will munch and graze through SCE’s Transmission and Distribution rights of way at Balsam Forebay, near Fresno County’s Shaver Lake. SCE business partner, Chasin Goat Grazing, brings in the farm animals for a roughly 15-acre buffet of nutrient-rich native plant species.

For SCE, it’s a critical step toward reducing the wildfire threat in the Sierra Nevada as part of its 2023-2025 Wildfire Mitigation Plan. The goal of the goat grazing program is to create an essential clearance around energized equipment by consuming green and dry vegetation, ultimately reducing the fuel load and threat of wildfires. Now in its third season, the herd is having lasting impacts.

“We have seen significant results using the goats,” said Hendrix. “They have a low ground disturbance and reduce the impact on the surrounding environmental sensitivities. In comparison, there are more safety risks associated with mechanical and manual methods, which require humans to carry in equipment and carry out brush while hiking in mountainous areas.”

Goats can not only clear brush more quickly, easily and safely in rugged terrain than human arborists, but they also can transform future growth patterns. By consuming nutrient-producing components, the goats can single-handedly reduce vegetation density year after year while encouraging native plant species to flourish at manageable heights.

“Vegetation management operations are vital to protect SCE’s infrastructure from vegetation and reduce wildfire threats, as we ultimately work to create sustainable rights of way so that we can continue providing reliable power to our customers,” Hendrix said.

Throughout the day and night, the goats are left to graze at their own pace between naps and water breaks, all under the watchful eye of guard dogs and herders. As they progress each day, herders gently move the herd to the next acre, where they’ll find fresh vegetation to munch. Unbeknownst to the goats, eating their way through breakfast, lunch and dinner is all in a day’s work protecting public safety.

Commentary from Marie Cloherty for People Management, published on 16.06.23, original source: The UK is facing a green skills crisis – what can we do?, Author: Yoana Cholteeva.

Despite increased concern about the need to tackle climate change, the UK workforce does not currently possess the skills needed to drive the green economy transformation, research has found.

While hiring has slowed globally, green job postings – requiring skills such as climate action planning, corporate sustainability and sustainable procurement – have grown by 15.2 per cent on LinkedIn, with green jobs now making up a third (33 per cent) of job postings in the UK, according to the latest Global Green Skills Report by LinkedIn.

The research showed that currently, more companies are looking for people who can help them achieve their climate goals, making demand for green talent outstrip supply.

In addition, the UK is facing a harder time compared to its western counterparts with just one in eight workers in the UK currently having green skills, compared to one in seven workers in France and one in six in Germany.

Confirming the lack of focus and investment in green skills, Marie Cloherty, executive director of Acre, says that despite many courses now existing in the subject matter and more young people choosing academic and technical qualifications linked to sustainability, “these won’t solve the immediate issue facing modern businesses”. Instead, “there needs to be significant investment in upskilling the middle management layer – the next generation hitting the board room”, she adds.

What is causing the green skills gap?
Confirming the report’s findings, JC Townend, chief executive of career transition and mobility at LHH in the UK and Ireland, says that as the green transition is picking up speed, “organisations across sectors are looking to make their practices more sustainable in response to growing consumer and policy interest”, which drives the growing demand for green skills.

Echoing this, Sue Duke, VP, head of global public policy and economic graph at LinkedIn, warns that filling these skills gaps will be “no mean feat” as “tackling climate change requires a transformation of the global labour market, both in terms of the jobs people do and the skills that professionals need”.

For this reason, she cautions that it is not enough to simply create more green roles and wait for people to fill them, “without the right skills, these new jobs can be hard for people to break into,” Duke says, while adding that “we need to make it as easy as possible for people to move into green jobs, and this will require combined action from policymakers, businesses and educational organisations”.

Emphasising the urgency to help develop green skills, Mark Edwards, chief executive of SERT, says that “this is not the only industry with severe skill shortages, but sectors with acute shortages such as shipbuilding, automotive or aerospace cause significant delays to projects, months worth of delivery delays and millions over budget”. But “what is the cost of delay to our planet if green skills continue to decline as the report suggests?,” he wonders.

How can we help tackle the green skills crisis?
Despite being passionate about helping to tackle climate change and being interested in taking such jobs, recent research by Learning and Work Institute for WorldSkills UK found that young people do not understand enough about how they can do that.

For instance, while 79 per cent of young people said it was important to work for an organisation committed to tackling climate change, 87 per cent also admitted they did not know what green skills were and were unsure how to turn this passion into a career.

Proposing one way to do that, Townend says that when hiring new workers, businesses can grow the green workforce by embracing a holistic approach.

“As green skills are an emerging area of study, closing the door to candidates without the desired formal education may lead to a limited talent pool that discount otherwise qualified candidates,” she says, while advising that businesses might benefit from “remaining open to candidates who can show their capabilities in nontraditional ways and place a higher value on soft skills like adaptability and an eagerness to learn”.

Edwards also says that L&D professionals and HR can contribute to bridging skills gaps by identifying the gaps, designing effective training programmes, promoting continuous learning, supporting career awareness and development and facilitating knowledge transfer.

“By taking a proactive approach and engaging employees at all levels, organisations can better prepare their workforce for the challenges and opportunities of the future.” Pointing out that nearly half of the workforce is set to retire in the next 10 years, he adds that “more engagement with new entrants 16+ and career awareness for those under 16 can go a long way”.

Similarly, Cloherty proposes that businesses focus on building capacity and resilience into their existing workforces. “And this doesn’t necessarily mean technical upskilling, but upskilling around enabling change, stakeholder engagement, influencing upwards and effective communication and teamwork.”

She also adds that all sectors will need such individuals to come through within their workforces as later, “those people will educate the next set of technically competent change-makers in sustainability who graduate and come into the workforce – but who might lack the commercial experience to navigate organisations and affect change with the skills they have”.

In Gary Fleisher’s most recent August 2023 story he states, “In the evolving world of sustainable architecture, a growing trend has been attracting considerable attention: container homes. These uniquely designed residences, crafted from shipping containers, are gaining traction for their affordability, durability, sustainability, customizability, and portability.” Read Gary’s entire article here.

In May 2023, Gary wrote about how “Container houses have gained popularity in recent years due to their affordability, durability, and eco-friendliness. They can be designed in various sizes and styles, and can be customized to meet the specific needs of the homeowner. They are also relatively quick to build, since the containers themselves are already structurally sound and require minimal modification.” Gary’s full story is here.

Getting the Most from the Machine

Motorsports have come a long way since the early days of drag racing in the 1920s, when cutting-edge engineering still struggled to surpass 100mph on the racetrack, and automobiles themselves were just beginning to pull out of the factory lots. Today Formula 1 racing is the pinnacle of motorsport with a global audience of hundreds of millions. Drivers can regularly reach speeds of over 200mph and withstand fighter jet levels of G forces as they race. And, from the fans watching the Grand Prix to the drivers piloting some of the most sophisticated machinery on four wheels, Lenovo plays a key role in the Formula 1 technology infrastructure.

Precision engineering and boundary-breaking technology have always been at the heart of Formula 1. As drivers and their teams constantly improve their vehicles, the broadcasters, IT professionals, event organizers, media managers, and every other cog in the Formula 1 organizational machine, implement the same forward-focused technological ethos.

“Innovation is embedded in everything we do,” explains Pete Samara, Director of Strategic Technical Ventures at Formula 1. “From the car to the track, to the broadcast and digital products, innovation has to be at the heart of everything we do every single day.”

To keep the organization’s many moving parts running smoothly, the experts at Formula 1 partnered with Lenovo for an IT infrastructure that can withstand the breakneck pace of innovation.

“We’ve got to make a million and one moving pieces synchronize and all come together in perfect harmony for race weekend,” explains Chris Roberts, IT Director at Formula 1. “It’s about ensuring that innovation comes together and we make it a hundred percent operational for fans. That’s a lot of people, and that’s a lot of software to get working together. Lenovo’s very much a one-stop shop for us, which is fantastic. We not only get amazing technology but also access to some of the best techies and expertise to help us build solutions.”

A Deluge of Data

One of the major IT challenges Formula 1 faces is the sheer volume of data generated by the organization. Not only does Formula 1 have all the data concerns of a globe-spanning company and sports organization, but each individual car is also generating millions of points of data across 22 Grands Prix around the world.

Formula 1 acquires lots of data from the cars, like the G-forces drivers hit rounding a corner, the steering angle, the brake, how much the driver is pushing the throttle and all the audio and video from the cameras and microphones.

Lenovo tech infrastructure helps put that data in the hands of the drivers and their teams instantly, through trackside devices and supports data collection with its servers.

“We have a number of servers and edge devices which then underpin that race operation for us,” says Roberts. “We have laptops, workstations, tablets, Motorola mobile phones, all the way out from the trackside and back to the broadcasting center.”

But in addition to the drivers, the fans themselves are also able to directly benefit from that track-generated data, as Lenovo technology connects the track to the Media & Technology Centre that display the data in real-time as on-screen graphics for the fans watching the race.

Samara insists that fan experience is an influential factor in the organization’s constant efforts to push technological boundaries and that the same drive is at the heart of racing as a sport.

“Racing to me is all about energy, innovation, technology, and excitement,” says Samara. “Fans like the fact that Formula 1 is always on the edge of innovation, trying to do something new all the time, whether that’s with the cars, with the fans, with the data.”

Sights fixed on Sustainability

Another key way Lenovo supports Formula 1 is in the organization’s efforts to improve sustainability in motorsports through Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Services. Lenovo ARS helps F1 develop and implement a sustainable disposition strategy for technology hardware that the organization cycles through.

By relying on Lenovo ARS, F1 was able to offset some of the cost of a technology refresh as well as guarantee security through secure and reliable data destruction. In addition, the initiative furthers the organization’s sustainability goals by recycling tech in a more socially and environmentally responsible way.

“One of the great things about our partnership with Lenovo is the sustainability initiative,” says Amie Smith, Senior IT Manager at F1. “We utilize Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Services, which means that we know that our hardware is going to be given a second life with users who will make the most of it, or is being recycled. And that helps us towards our goals of being more sustainable.”

The Fast and the Future-Proof

It looks like the speed of the industry will only increase for Formula 1. As the sport continues to grow in popularity around the world, and the racers and their teams continue to push the limits of speed and engineering, F1 continues to rely on Lenovo devices, infrastructure solutions, and services to keep the global machine running smoothly.

“The partnership with Lenovo is helping us be more efficient and effective across our whole organization,” says Roberts. “It allows the IT teams to pick products from their vast portfolio, to communize against our organization’s needs. Our vision is to create the world-leading spectacle of motorsport for our fans. Technology plays a massive part in that for us because we need to engage our fans on multiple levels, on multiple platforms, across the world. So, Lenovo is the core of everything we do.“

“Lenovo technology is at the heart of our race operations,” echoes Smith. “Whether that’s the devices in our server rooms, or the Motorola handsets walking around the paddock, or laptops in our hands. It really is what enables us to connect with absolutely everyone.”

We are building a resilient safety culture at IP, adopting the latest in safe work technologies to ensure we get home to our families every day. With the launch of our new IP brand, that also means many of our sites around the world will be ordering a new set of hard hats in the near future. Many of our team members personalize their hard hats, using the surface of their protective head gear to reflect their individual personalities. Stickers on the hard hats highlight a commitment to safety, recognize achievements or reflect on a particular annual outage. What better way to celebrate their contribution to our culture of safety than showcasing these canvases that are so integral to our daily work?

You probably see a hard hat every day. Maybe your parents or grandparents wore one as part of their work uniform. Maybe you own one as well! Like steel-toed boots, safety glasses and gloves, the hard hat has saved countless lives since its development by the Bullard Company of San Francisco, in 1919. The Bullard Company manufactured mining equipment, and after its founder, Edward W. Bullard returned from World War One, he began to develop the original hard hat to protect mine workers, using the helmet he wore on the front line as a starting point for his design. The “hard boiled hat,” as it was known back then, was made by boiling and shellacking leather—a cheaper and less bulky solution to the metal “doughboy” helmets worn by US soldiers. The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1933 was the first project to mandate hard hat use for every on-site worker.

Using heat and pressure to form a solid, durable covering isn’t so different from how hard hats are made today, but innovations in material strength and structural design have made hard hats more comfortable to wear, and far more effective at protection. Today, high-density polyethylene is injected into a vacuum sealed molding press to create the shell of the hard hat. Plastic headbands are inserted to create a “suspension system” allowing the shell to float above your head.

Hard hats also come in classes with different levels of electrical protection: Class G is a “general” hard hat with electrical rating of 2,200 V, class E “electrical” hard hats have a rating of 20,000 V, and class C “conductive” hard hats with no electrical protection. The type and class of hard hat will vary from site to site and can even be role-based. For example, an electrician may be provided a Class E hard hat while a paper machine operator is given a Class G hard hat. Some IP facilities use bump caps instead of hard hats, which are designed to look like ordinary baseball caps, and are designed to less obtrusive while still providing cranial protection.

At our manufacturing locations, work environments can vary, carrying different potential hazards depending on the work being performed. As part of our drive to build a resilient safety culture, hard hats are one of our oldest and most trusted layers of protection to ensure we go home safe and sound to our loved ones every day.

We are committed to formalizing this new ESG strategy across the company, while staying true to our core principles, which have helped shape us into the global brand we are today — living by our values, doing what’s right and acting with integrity everywhere we do business regardless of the circumstances. We have made significant strides in developing our ESG strategy and are excited to continue on our journey to meet our new near- and longer-term commitments.

With dedication, heart and collaboration, together we aim to take care of the things that really matter: engaged people, thoughtful products and brighter places. The first in a four-part series, we’re explaining what this means to us.

Engaged people is a focus on people and culture as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. We’re going to do more for all the people who touch our business, and we’ll work together with openness and inclusivity to create meaningful and positive changes in our business, communities and society.

With thoughtful products, we’re reimagining a resilient and responsible future by creating products with more sustainable ingredients and by strengthening partnerships with our suppliers. We will also give our customers more informed product choices with additional transparency on what goes into making the products they love. When it comes to thoughtful products, we are starting with a focus on product transparency and ingredients as well as sustainable sourcing.

As it relates to brighter places, we believe in the power of fragrance and want to protect the planet that provides resources used to make fragrances and our products. We are continually working to reduce our carbon footprint and improve our packaging to make long-term positive changes for everyone’s benefit. Our focus areas for this pillar include climate change and carbon emissions and packaging and plastics..

These are the things that matter the most to us, and we’re on a journey to make sure what we do counts.

Our commitments are intentionally ambitious yet grounded in where we are as a company today. We look forward to reporting on future progress toward these goals in our annual ESG reports. As we move forward, we are reminded that ESG is a journey, not a destination. We proudly present these initial goals and recognize that as our ESG strategy matures and evolves, so will our ambitions.
