At Acre, we pride ourselves on networking and building meaningful relationships around the world to help accelerate action where the planet needs it most.

It is why we firmly align with our purpose, to create systemic change for our planet and society by activating people’s potential.

I recently returned from ChangeNOW, the world’s largest event of sustainable solutions for the planet, with Jack Malhotra-Mulloy, Acre’s Head of Impact Investing (EMEA). We gained first-hand knowledge of the innovations and their immense potential, which has really struck a long-lasting chord with us both.

The conference united impactful changemakers and creative innovation solutions for many of the world’s most pressing challenges, with business leaders, policy-makers and entrepreneurs discussing ways to tackle the climate crisis together.

ChangeNOW was held in the Grand Palais Ephémère exhibition hall in the Champs de Mars, Paris, where 400 visionary speakers (spanning 120 countries) showcased inspiring state-of-the-art solutions for the planet and future change-leaders presented pioneering start-up pitches.

The three-day conference attracted a staggering 1,200 investors this year which was indicative of how the event has scaled in size, in just a few years it has evolved from a much smaller event to a large and highly regarded international summit.

Networking opportunities
Summit highlights included an invitation to the Singapore Sustainable Ventures lunch event, organised by our friends at Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Singapore Global network.

It was great to put faces to names of those who are passionate about the cause, including the honour of meeting ChangeNOW Founder & CEO Santiago Lefebvre, as well as YC Choy, VP and Head of Region, Europe at Singapore EDB, Arnaud Blandin, Mentor, Advisor and Connector – Climate, Sustainability, Strategy & Technology and Jamie (Soon Jia Mei) Soon Kesteloot, Business IP Strategist who is building the bridge to connect R&D, Intellectual Property and Business.

During our stay in Paris, Jack and I were also invited to the Embassy of the Netherlands for a networking cocktail, hosted by Michael Pistecky, Head of Economic Section, who made us feel very welcome. It was a very pleasant event where we met with an interesting and highly diverse group of people, including Mert Kumru, Campaigner World’s Youth For Climate Justice, LLM Student Public International Law, Merijn Zondag, CSO of Alkemio, Farah Obaidullah, Founder and Director of Women4Oceans and Garance Aulagne, Global Partnerships Manager at ChangeNOW.

Looking ahead
I would be delighted to return to next year’s ChangeNOW edition, potentially joining forces with https://www.transform4c.com/approach/ and considering showing the movie https://beyondzerofilm.com/

Did you attend the ChangeNOW conference this year? What were the key messages you took away with you and what were your favourite solutions to healing our planet?

If you didn’t attend this year but feel inspired and motivated by the hundreds of like-minded, talented changemakers, we at Acre can utilize our broad global network of highly-skilled individuals to help connect you or your business to the people who are poised to drive change and accelerate decarbonisation efforts for positive impact. With an eager yet determined pursuit of a sustainable, equitable, and clean future, a broad collection of energy leaders announced a Joint Vision Statement on the energy transition at Reuters Events Energy Transition 2023 in New York in June. Allyson Anderson Book, our Chief Sustainability Officer, took part in several discussions at the event, and proudly signed this important statement.

Allyson spoke about the need for increasing efficiencies in our sector, decarbonization for hard-to-abate sectors, scaling up climate technologies through digital enablement and as well as the importance of bringing the Global South along for a fair transition.

The vision is shared by those exhibiting, and continuing to advocate for, a more comprehensive and enriched concept of transition that is practical, equitable and fundamentally consistent with international Sustainable Development Goals:

Covia has the privilege of managing a variety of natural resources, which is why conservation and community well-being are deeply embedded in how we operate our mining and processing facilities. In 2022, we continued to invest in additional capabilities and devise strategies to bolster our ability to achieve our water conservation objectives.

Water Stewardship

Water conservation remains a particularly high priority for us given its importance to our local communities and the water intensive nature of our operations. Additionally, water plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, performance, and quality of Covia’s products. Our water management strategy is twofold:

1. Optimizing the water efficiency of our production activities; and

2. Increasing water reuse through the implementation of an aggressive water recycling goal.

Covia’s sites maintain unique surface water and/or groundwater management or conservation plans based on local, regional, and national regulatory requirements. Typical elements of these plans include ensuring water quality, conducting water risk assessments, conserving freshwater resources, recycling water, and supporting community access to clean water. In addition, we partner with local organizations to support increased access to safe water sources. This includes participating in projects focused on water security, quality, and conservation, and protecting the waterways in the areas near our facilities.

Water Use

Summarized below is the volume of fresh water withdrawn and consumed at the facilities with reporting mechanisms in place. Current reporting is site-specific, but we will increase disclosure until 100% of our sites can report on their water management performance.

2022 Water Data Total Fresh Water Withdrawn (thousand cubic meters)37,013Total Fresh Water Consumed (thousand cubic meters)16,991Sites with Water Reporting Mechanisms (percentage of total sites) 80%

Goals that Inspire Environmental Stewardship

Protect Essential Water Supply

In 2022, we continued to align our water management strategy with the United Nations’ objectives regarding availability and sustainable management of water, as defined in UN SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

TARGET: Recycle 90% of water at sites in water-stressed areas and expand reporting on consumption at all facilities

2022 Progress: During the year, we implemented water consumption reporting capabilities at six sites. Currently, 80% of our sites are tracking water consumption, and we will continue to work with the remaining sites to increase reporting.

As of December 31st, 2022, 25% of Covia’s sites in water-stressed areas achieved their goal of recycling 90% or more of the water used in its operations.

Additionally, we created a dedicated, cross-functional Steering Team to oversee our water efforts in pursuit of our 2030 goal.

Angel Shelton Willis is the Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary for SEE® (formerly Sealed Air). She oversees all aspects of SEE’s legal and compliance affairs, serves as the executive sponsor of SEE’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, and leads the company’s ESG Executive Steering Committee.

How Does SEE Approach ESG?

Our approach is built on the belief that effective management of ESG-related matters positions SEE to create value for stakeholders and society while reducing risks. We have an ESG Executive Steering Committee that consists of five members of the company’s executive leadership team who work with a cross-functional extended ESG leadership team. Together, we drive the integration of ESG across our business, engage with stakeholders, advance initiatives, and measure and report our performance. We take pride in the exceptional level of collaboration among our people, our leadership, and our Board of Directors. The progress we have made in our ESG program and reporting over the last few years reflects that collaboration.

What Are the ESG Leadership Team’s Priorities?

We are making significant progress towards improving transparency, aligning with ESG standards and best practices, and communicating with stakeholders. There will be many additional efforts on SEE’s part as we continue to make progress. We will take a disciplined focus on ESG integration and create programs and initiatives around each of the topics that matter most. We will develop reliable and consistent metrics for measuring our performance and will continue building our roadmap and sharing our progress with stakeholders.

What is the Board of Directors’ Role in ESG?

The Board of Directors is SEE’s highest governing body and is highly engaged in overseeing our sustainability and people strategies as well as other material ESG issues. Recognizing the importance of ESG, the Board designated its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee to oversee SEE’s ESG strategy and designated the Organization and Compensation Committee to manage the company’s workforce and people management strategies, including those relating to corporate culture, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion. I am pleased to work closely with our Board as it embraces SEE’s purpose of making our world better than we find it.

How Does SEE View Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace?

From a business standpoint, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are imperative to SEE. Numerous studies show that when people feel more included, they are more engaged and motivated, which positively impacts people and business performance.

From a personal standpoint, I think DEI makes us all better. As a leader and former athlete, some of the greatest teams on which I have been a member have consisted of people who bring their best selves and talents to the team, spend time getting to know and appreciating one another, and are open to learning from one another. When we do those things among people with different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences — coupled with some hard work and grit — it builds trust and sets the stage for the team to succeed. It also helps foster problem solving and contributes to a more dynamic work environment for everyone.

I am proud to champion SEE’s first DEI Council initiative: Courageous Conversations. These live virtual sessions provide a safe space where employees can openly and candidly share their experiences and discuss actions for how we can build a more diverse, equitable and inclusive culture. My hope is employees leave these sessions with a deeper appreciation of different perspectives, become more aware of their own assumptions and biases, and be willing to get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

Food security is now a worldwide issue. To keep up with a rising population, the global agriculture sector will need to produce more food by 2050 than what was produced in the last 8,000 years combined. Yet, the agricultural sector is confronted with growing challenges, ranging from less arable land and water to a lack of broadband access in rural America, which impedes innovation and growth.

Land O’Lakes, one of America’s premier agribusiness and food companies, is a farmer- and retailer-owned cooperative that is inextricably linked to the success of the people producing and growing our food. Driven by their purpose, Rooted in Tomorrow, the organization is actively advancing solutions to build a sustainable future for farmers and a safe and reliable food supply. Land O’Lakes’ initiatives support farmers globally through grantmaking, leveraging the latest tools to help farmers profitably transition to more sustainable agriculture practices, and increasing the representation of women in agriculture.

We invited Kim Olson, Chief Communications Officer, to share how Land O’Lakes is strengthening its role as a leader in sustainable production while building on sustainable practices that farmers have been implementing for generations.

Aramark and Babylon Micro-Farms

Aramark has partnered with Babylon Micro-Farms, an indoor micro-farm company, to expand its healthy influence. Aramark Headquarters has its own in-unit garden with fresh herbs and lettuces, which is used by their chefs almost every day. The unit is controlled from an app that enables staff to control the light, water, and nutrients. The Babylon micro-farms unit was installed in January at Aramark Headquarters on the 7th floor right off the 2400 Market Café.

Aramark and Babylon’s partnership started in 2021 when units were installed at Virginia Commonwealth University, University of South Carolina, Lander University, and Western Carolina University. Aramark installed one to two micro-farm units at each university campus, serving over 90,000 students in total. The goal of the partnership was to increase student engagement and educate the students on micro-farms and their impact.

There are currently 49 units installed throughout Aramark university locations, with 21 more units planned to be added to other Aramark locations. A few of these locations include SUNY Poly, Loyola University, University of Texas: San Antonio, and Southwestern University.

ROME, Ga., August 15, 2023 /3BL/ – Pirelli North America today announced a new partnership with The Ray, a non-profit based in Atlanta that has helped to develop a net-zero highway testbed on an 18-mile stretch of Interstate 85 in West Georgia, near the Pirelli factory in Rome.

This partnership aims to advance research and solutions in areas such as technology for road safety, circular economy, EV charging infrastructure, renewable energy, and environmental and social impacts of tires and roads. As part of the non-profit’s Advisory Board, Pirelli will contribute to the strategic thinking around roadways of the future.

With multiple studies pointing to the benefits of both rubber-modified asphalt and re-use of tire material, Pirelli is investigating future projects with The Ray to further research the impact of rubber-modified asphalt, as well as the use of tire-derived aggregate for stormwater galleries.

In addition, the brand is joining a multi-tiered partnership focused on tires and the circular economy – driving education, innovation, solutions development and sharing of best practices.

“Being part of sustainability solutions that extend beyond just our product is an important part of our commitment to climate action,” says Maureen Kline, Vice President, Public Affairs and Sustainability, Pirelli North America. “We know that tires are the one thing between the vehicle and the road. By working with The Ray, we can join forces to identify challenges, develop solutions and drive real change.”

Pirelli believes that tire design will have a key role in shaping the future of mobility and this new partnership demonstrates its commitment to pursuing increasingly challenging goals in terms of sustainability. The company has set goals to increase the renewable and recycled content of tires and reduce environmental impacts. In addition, Pirelli is focusing on mitigation strategies for the broader impacts of its products, including end-of-life tires and tire and road wear particles. The partnership with The Ray will look at areas of mitigation as Pirelli seeks to become an even better steward of its products.

“Pirelli leads from Georgia, with an advanced manufacturing facility that was the first FSC-certified tire plant in the world. Likewise, The Ray leads and scales net-zero transportation infrastructure from The Ray Highway in Georgia,’ said Allie Kelly, Executive Director of The Ray. “The alignment between the organizations, focused on safety, circularity and innovation, will power the partnership to produce groundbreaking projects and research in the coming years, and the impact will benefit communities across the country.”

The Ray is a non-profit organization and living innovation lab focused on sustainable highway transportation and setting new standards for the roadways of the future. Current projects include the use of highway rights-of-way for solar arrays, cloud-based data management for connected vehicle safety and efficiency, drones used as first responders, pollinator gardens for endangered species, and further deployment and impact of bioswales. The Ray defines net-zero in transportation as “Zero Deaths, Zero Waste, Zero Carbon and Zero Impact,” and facilitates the building and scaling of clean transportation and energy projects with transportation agencies, including Georgia and other state Departments of Transportation, tollway and turnpike agencies, regional collaboratives, and local governments.

“This partnership with Pirelli will bring The Ray one step closer to achieving the net-zero transportation goals,” said Kelly.
