By providing bill relief and resources, Entergy steps up to help low-income customers overcome the stress of high temperatures

JACKSON, Miss., September 7, 2023 /3BL/ – This summer, Entergy Mississippi launched a series of measures through its “Beat the Heat” program focused on helping low-income customers and communities stay cool and pay their bills. This year marks the 22nd year of the program, which provides bill payment assistance, fans and energy efficiency kits and support from local community partners to help hundreds of residential customers.

Summer brings hot weather, and record temperature highs across Entergy’s service areas, resulting in higher energy usage. These challenging conditions can be stressful and, Entergy Mississippi is stepping up to help those most in need.

“Whether it’s working to provide bill payment assistance to low and moderate-income residents, distributing fans and energy efficiency kits, or weatherizing houses, we are committed to helping our customers in need,” said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO. “We recognize the economic challenges our communities are facing, and we are doing everything we can to help them prepare for the summer heat and manage their Entergy bills.”

In response to these challenges, Entergy Mississippi is equipping residential customers with information and tools to reduce the impact of high summer temperatures and increased energy usage, including partnering with community action agencies to:

Commit more than $520,000 to The Power to Care program, which provides bill assistance to older adults and customers with disabilities.Sponsor community cooling centers for customers in Hinds and Sunflower counties.Purchase air conditioning units and fans for customers in the Mississippi Delta and Desoto, Amite, Pike, Walthall, and Wilkinson counties.Sponsor water activities for children in DeSoto County.Commit $1 million to distribute free energy efficiency kits to customer.

At Covia, each Team Member plays a key part in our success. Teaching the next generation of Covia leaders to address real-world issues is critical to our ability to Deliver on Promise for our stakeholders. Therefore, investing in the professional development of Team Members is critical to the continued growth and long-term success of our company.

Covia offers several talent development programs and learning resources that support Team Member performance on multiple levels. These programs align with the skill requirements associated with specific functional and leadership roles.

In the highlight story below, Mike Maloney, Director of Mine Planning and Geology shares his unique and inspiring journey at Covia.

Originally published in Covia’s Insights Blog

For over 30 years, Covia has encouraged me to pursue opportunities that have helped me grow as a manager and as a mentor. I’m grateful for the valuable skills and lessons I’ve learned in my time at Covia as well as the chance to pass those same skills on to the next generation as I near retirement. Looking back at my career, I couldn’t imagine working with a kinder and more talented group of people.

Mining & Geology: A Family Trait

I grew up in a small town in Montana. My dad’s family were cattle ranchers and my grandfather was an amateur prospector who owned a small silver mine. Every summer, a geologist friend of my grandfather would visit the ranch to tramp around the hills of Montana. I was extremely interested in their work and, looking back on it now, the two of them were the first to help spark my interest in geology and mining.

In my college years, I attended Montana Tech and pursued a degree in petroleum engineering. After graduating, I found work on an offshore rig along the Gulf Coast. However, due to a prolonged period of inactivity on the rig, I made the decision to leave and return home with hopes of furthering my education. It was during this time that a former member of the Covia Team from my hometown reached out to me about a potential opportunity as a Safety and Health Quality Control Supervisor at Covia’s plant in Guion, Arkansas. Since I couldn’t make a can of tuna stretch like I used to back in my college days, I figured that I might as well check out the opportunity.

During the beginning of my time with Covia, I worked in various positions across the operations department and in several states including Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. I enjoyed getting the chance to work in varying roles across different locations as it helped me gain a better appreciation for my coworkers and culture.

In my current role as the Director of Mine Planning and Geology, one of our primary responsibilities at Covia involves scouting potential mining locations and determining their viability. Using USGS maps, we can discover places to take mineral samples for testing to determine if the land is suitable for mining. Once our team decides on a location, we ask the most important question of the process, “is it safe to mine here?” This is critical when we’re considering where to build a mine. In addition to safety, one of our main priorities is ensuring long-term ecological preservation. Once we determine a potential site meets our strict safety, environmental, and logistic standards, we move forward with community meetings, site planning, determining the economic viability, and mine production.

Fostering a Strong Community

I currently live in Arkansas and enjoy being surrounded by the beautiful hardwood forests that populate the Ozark region. In my free time I like to garden and go antiquing with my wife. We love visiting antique and flea markets to find cool treasures. I like to think I’m always searching for gems both at work and at home.

Covia has been wonderful at encouraging me to grow both in and out of the office, always providing opportunities to take on more responsibilities, discover my niche, learn new things, and grow. I love that everyone is eager to lend a hand and help when able.

I think what stands out to me most is that Covia has fostered an environment that makes the plants feel like family. When I first started, there were seven pairs of fathers and sons working operations at the Arkansas plant – some of which were third generation miners.

During my time as a plant manager, I worked hard to foster the community that we had built there, encouraging a selfless environment where each Team Member feels comfortable to speak up and contribute. One of my proudest accomplishments is that I was able to build a tight-knit community for my team.

Another achievement I am especially proud of is that the plant I managed was awarded the Top Large Plant in Safety one year. This was a remarkable achievement for an underground mine with hundreds of employees. At the time, we had reached six straight quarters with no citations and no workplace accidents. One of my highest priorities has always been making sure everyone gets home in the same shape that they arrived in. Safety is critical to long-term success. Covia empowered me to develop a safe environment for my team that remains strong to this day.

Developing a Brighter Future

The energy at Covia right now is unmatched. There is a lot of enthusiasm and excitement as the company continues to make great business decisions and bring in tremendous new talent. I continue to believe that the organization’s main strength is its employees. I’m looking forward to expanding my role as a mentor to help guide this new generation of talented Team Members. I will be facing retirement soon and feel confident that these young professionals will continue the work that my generation started – taking Covia to new heights.

The trend toward increasing LGBTQ+ representation in media reflects forward progress for the community, but the road ahead is far from smooth. As recent cancellations and shortened series disproportionately affect queer representation on screen, finding LGBTQ+ inclusive content to help carry inclusive brand messaging may prove even more challenging.

The future of marketing is personal, and audience data is critical in an era where people are looking for content—and brands—they can connect with. In this report, Nielsen examines how gender nonconforming audiences are more comfortable with brands targeting them based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity than cisgender audiences.

When it comes to media content, streaming is leading the way. While LGBTQ+ related video content is limited, streaming platforms account for 87% of what’s available. LGBTQ+ audiences view movies and programs on traditional TV as notably more non-inclusive than movies and programs on streaming services—and so do heterosexual audiences.

Other key highlights include:

More than 25% of global audiences believe that celebrating inclusivity and sharing positive stories would improve LGBTQ+ inclusivity in ads and content. When audiences did receive targeted advertising based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity, 64% say the products and messaging were relevant.Streaming platforms account for 87% of what’s available for representative content, with Black LGBTQ+ content leading representation for the community.

SALT LAKE CITY, September 7, 2023 /3BL/ — KeyBank has awarded a $120,000 grant to Women of the World (WoW), a non-profit organization focused on overcoming employment barriers for forcibly displaced women residing in Utah. The grant will allow WoW to expand its Employee Partnership Program (EPP) by adding a social worker to the team, as well as expand its office space and programming.

“Sustainable employment is a massive step toward independence,” said Drew Yergensen, president of KeyBank Utah. “This program works with Utah employers to help secure jobs with benefits and the potential to move up the career ladder. Women in this program are overcoming personal trauma, language barriers and technological hurdles, and I’m beyond proud that our community can offer a hand up.”

Since the non-profit was created in 2009, WoW’s mission has been focused on supporting women from all nations – who’ve been displaced as a result of war, job loss or poverty – and helping them gain the skills and confidence needed to attain self-reliance, economic success and a voice in the community.

Women of the World believes that to care about refugees is to recognize divinity in the eyes of the most vulnerable, to engage instead of looking away. WoW is a boutique women’s refugee service provider taking on issues at all times after resettlement.

The grant will also allow WoW to grow the program by funding intensive English courses with a teacher and assistant, curriculum development and childcare, as well as relocating to a larger facility.

About Women of the World

Since 2009, our mission has been to empower women from all nations – no matter their status – to achieve independence, economic success, and a voice in their community. Through our three-pronged model of Customized Service, Community Building, and Economic Empowerment, we offer post-resettlement services such as: English classes, career and educational development, mentorships, citizenship preparation, workshops, personalized case management and advocacy, and cultural integration awareness for both our clients and the Salt Lake community. We hope to build a wide community for displaced women and their families and to support them as they build a life here in Utah.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, September 7, 2023 /3BL/ – Family-owned spirits company Bacardi has achieved Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) certification for its BOMBAY SAPPHIRE® gin distillery in Hampshire, England, recognizing its efforts to support local wildlife and biodiversity.

The distillery becomes the first spirits production site in the UK to hold the certification and, as of today, the only Certified Silver program in the UK, thanks to its focus on protecting local bat populations and the section of the River Test that runs through the site.

Conservation work includes the installation of 26 bat and hibernation boxes, bat access tiles and numerous cavities and gaps to the walls of the distillery. Meanwhile, to increase the abundance of insects in the area – a food source for bats – bee nesting boxes have been installed and wildflowers planted. The home of BOMBAY SAPPHIRE is also used to train early career ecologists on using bat detecting and recording equipment, helping to educate tomorrow’s experts in the field.

On the banks of the River Test – an area which has held Site of Special Scientific Interest’ status since 1991 – more wildflowers have been planted and fish and eel passes have also been constructed to allow for greater movement of river life.

In addition, the distillery is part of a nationwide program called the Anglers’ Riverfly Monitoring Initiative, which engages a local community of volunteers from the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme to monitor the river’s invertebrates. This study provides invaluable insight into the health of the river, helping to track and monitor any changes over time.

“The home of BOMBAY SAPPHIRE is incredibly special – not only for the beautiful gin we produce there, but for its surrounding Hampshire countryside and nature,” says Rodolfo Nervi, VP, Global Safety, Quality & Sustainability, Bacardi. “We put protecting that environment front and center when we designed and built the distillery nearly 10 years ago, and we continue that work to this day, prioritizing doing the right thing to have a positive impact on the planet for future generations.”

All 10 BOMBAY SAPPHIRE botanicals are sourced from 100 percent sustainably certified suppliers, and the brand has a long history of pioneering in sustainability. When the distillery opened in 2014, its design was rated ‘outstanding’ by BREEAM – the most recognized environmental assessment for buildings.

The BOMBAY SAPPHIRE distillery joins other sites from the company’s portfolio in securing the WHC certification. Both Bacardi in Puerto Rico, which is the largest premium rum distillery in the world and the home of the world’s most awarded rum BACARDĺ, and the Bacardi Bottling Corporation site in Jacksonville, Florida, have previously earned WHC certifications.

The BACARDĺ site in Cataño, Puerto Rico was recently re-certified for the third time for its efforts in building pollinator gardens that protect bats, butterflies and bees. It remains the only initiative on the island to hold the WHC certification.

Meanwhile, the Bacardi site in Jacksonville has been re-certified an incredible five times for its conservation initiatives, which include installing song bird nesting boxes for Eastern Blue Birds and native bat acoustic monitoring to support local biodiversity. The WHC also presented Bacardi in Jacksonville with its first ever Ibis Award in 2020, created to recognize a program that has demonstrated resiliency of spirit and advancement of conservation despite shutdowns, quarantines, and changes in the workplace.

“Companies achieving WHC Conservation Certification are environmental leaders, voluntarily managing their lands to support sustainable ecosystems and the communities that surround them,” says Margaret O’Gorman, President, Wildlife Habitat Council. “We applaud the BOMBAY SAPPHIRE distillery for its dedication to restoring local waterways, providing shelter for important bat populations and removing invasive species. These incredible efforts support the biodiversity of the ecosystems surrounding this site while also benefitting the greater community.”

A new school year can be challenging for kids and parents, especially when a medical diagnosis might require special accommodations. Emily Brannon, a hospital teacher and educational advocate at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, works with families to make this transition as easy as possible. Emily recently met with a sickle cell patient and his parents who were concerned about their son beginning kindergarten and wanted to make sure his teacher and administrators were aware of his medical needs.

“I was able to set up a meeting with the school principal, kindergarten teacher and the patient’s parents to provide handouts explaining sickle cell disease and discuss what was most important for this patient and his family,” said Brannon. “Schools have processes in place for children with medical needs, and through my educational advocacy and the parents’ opportunity to share their personal concerns, the school was able to provide appropriate support and accommodations for this student as he began his elementary experience.”

Emily is part of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center’s family support team, which is completely donor-funded. In early 2023, the Aflac Foundation contributed $1.5 million to the family support team to help provide needed services. Emily and other teachers work with families every day to help them overcome school barriers. “The school system can be overwhelming, and with the addition of a medical diagnosis, school tasks can seem impossible,” said Brannon. “The best part of our day is seeing the relief in a parent’s face when we offer to take on certain tasks and provide solutions for them.”

CALGARY, Alberta, September 7, 2023 /3BL/ – Benevity, Inc., the leading provider of global corporate purpose software, today announced it has joined CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion within the workplace. As one of more than 2,400 chief executives who have joined the coalition, Benevity CEO Kelly Schmitt is committed to cultivating a workplace where diverse perspectives and experiences are embraced and where employees feel empowered to be their authentic selves.

“If a company is serious about diversity, equity and inclusion, they need to be serious about creating the conditions in which people from all backgrounds, genders, abilities and circumstances can be successful. At Benevity, we’ve worked hard to build and nurture a culture that creates a sense of belonging at its core. One big step towards that is our parental leave program, which tackles the big social issue of gender inequity, using our workplace as a place to push the boundaries and learn, while ensuring equal opportunities for all genders. We hope other companies can join us in these kinds of actions,” said Schmitt.

Since the launch of its parental leave program, Benevity has seen positive outcomes for gender equity, including:

35% of co-parenting leaves are taken by men, creating new bonding opportunities, shared domestic roles and reducing the stigma of men taking leave.79% of women who stayed with Benevity after parental leave have had a promotion, demonstrating that women can have both a family and a career.

Additionally, Benevity is one of 51 signatories led by women CEOs. The collective has already shared more than 1,900 actions and tangible learning opportunities, creating collaborative conversations about advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.

Some key actions CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion members have committed to include:

Continuing to cultivate workplaces that support open dialogue on complex, and sometimes difficult, issues related to diversity and inclusion.Implementing and expanding unconscious bias education.Sharing best known — as well as unsuccessful — actions.Creating and sharing strategic inclusion and diversity plans with boards of directors.

Benevity’s recent The State of Workplace DEI report revealed that DEI remains a focal point for employees, regardless of geographic region, gender, race or ethnicity, with 66% of employees believing their companies should dedicate more time and resources to DEI initiatives than they currently do. The report also found that 91% of employees felt Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) have a greater impact on inclusivity than traditional DEI and unconscious bias training, which is where a lot of DEI budgets are invested. By joining other advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion, Benevity will continue to lead critical conversations and play a meaningful role in addressing these important societal issues.

The CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion was formed by CEOs and leaders from Accenture, BCG, Deloitte US, The Executive Leadership Council, EY, General Atlantic, KPMG, New York Life, Procter & Gamble, and PwC.
