The polyurethane adhesives made in Henkel’s Elgin, IL production facility are utilized across markets and applications – from food packaging to building construction and from kitchen and bath fixtures to recreational vehicles (RVs). As the highest volume polyurethane manufacturer in Henkel’s North American network, product manufactured in this plant serves multiple customers worldwide. Learn more in this segment of #AViewFrom: Elgin, Illinois.

Constructed by Henkel, the Elgin, IL site located on Gasket Drive broke ground in the late 1980s and has been an essential contributor to the company’s success ever since. Today, nearly 100 employees from engineering, product development, quality management, logistics, and operations make this vibrant, five-day-a-week, three-shift site a powerhouse of production, technical expertise, and innovation. Both liquid and hot melt polyurethane adhesives are produced here at massive scale – totaling thousands of tons annually. The adhesives – sold under the LOCTITE®, LIOFOL®, TECHNOMELT®, and TYCEL® brands – are used to build flexible food packaging like drink and coffee bean pouches, provide structural stability to RVs, encapsulate electronics for protection, and enable engineered wood products used for mass timber building assemblies among others.

Unique among production facilities, Elgin is in the product development and innovation business, too. We have a product development lab, are working actively with the innovation team on exciting initiatives for the water filtration market, and of course, are focused on manufacturing advanced liquid and hot melt polyurethanes. The collaboration is invaluable and the feedback loop very short!

Drew Thaler, Director of Operations at the Elgin Plant

Dwight Heinrich, Product Development Senior Manager, agrees: “I like that we have R&D on-site and work with innovation teams across the Henkel organization on special projects. This enables Elgin to showcase some of our important customer partnership initiatives and highlight the significance of the materials made here.”

Having been an integral part of the Henkel operations footprint for over 30 years, the 165,000 sq. ft. Elgin plant has seen several expansions and incredible transformation. Current and upcoming investments and improvements include decarbonization efforts, integration of digital capabilities, and water efficiency enhancements.

“One of the most impactful additions has been our distributed control system,” says Thaler. “This helps automate our production process, taking manual controls – like pressure regulation and material additions – out of the equation. Our operations team is then free to focus on other important manufacturing tasks.”

The plant is investing in technology to support the sustainability goals of the organization. A focus on water conservation includes a planned electrolysis system which will maintain clean water, reduce consumption, and remove corrosion from piping to improve overall water cleanliness and efficiency.

COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION ACROSS THE REGION:

Polyurethane chemistry has uses in a variety of markets. One of the new applications has been in the water filtration market. The Elgin manufacturing team worked with Henkel’s R&D specialists in Rocky Hill, CT, to scale a game-changing liquid filtration product. “LOCTITE® UK 8050/5050 has been one of our biggest commercial successes in filtration and the foundation for many other formulation developments,” shares Alyssa Beebe, Innovation Program Manager in Rocky Hill, emphasizing that the collaboration between development, application engineering, and manufacturing was vital to this achievement. “It was the first adhesive to achieve blister-free performance on membranes, which is tremendous in the filtration space.” Blister-free bond lines mitigate the potential for bacterial growth which prolongs the life of the water filter.

DID YOU KNOW:

“Polyurethanes are used for many lamination applications,” says Heinrich. “Did you know that United States passports are coated in materials made here?! That’s pretty cool!”

Six-year-old Daniel Teague loves everything about outer space and has his sights set on becoming an astronaut. He is being treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia but will not let that slow him down in his pursuit to blast off to the stars in a few years. In the meantime, Daniel and his family recently visited Kennedy Space Center in Florida to learn what it takes to be an astronaut, thanks to Aflac and Make-A-Wish South Carolina.

Getting ready for takeoff
On Aug. 1, Aflac granted Daniel’s wish at a surprise celebration hosted at the South Carolina State Museum in Columbia. Gen. Charles “Charlie” Duke, a retired S.C. astronaut, who walked the surface of the moon during the Apollo 16 mission in 1972, shared a special video message to get Daniel ready for takeoff. Bob Ruff, senior vice president, Group Voluntary Benefits, helped deliver Daniel’s wish and give him a few travel essentials — Aflac luggage, an Aflac plush duck, packing cubes, a water bottle and a blanket.

“Making this wish come true for Daniel is another way for Aflac to celebrate his strength and courage — and to give him extra joy and hope,” said Ruff. “Aflac is happy to work with Make-A-Wish South Carolina, as we continue our 28-year commitment to supporting children with cancer, their families and health care teams.”

Make-A-Wish South Carolina grants wishes that bring hope, joy and support to local children with critical illnesses. Since 2018, Aflac has donated nearly $50,000 to grant seven wishes.

It’s said that haste makes waste, but Abbott is making swift progress toward its goal of addressing 50 million pounds of packaging by 2030, just one component of our comprehensive 2030 Sustainability Plan.

In fact, at the end of 2022, Abbott had already reached 59% of its packaging objective.

Led by an internal Sustainable Packaging Council, Abbott continually assesses design and manufacturing processes to enhance our packaging – balancing the need for protecting the life-changing product with protecting the planet. In 2022, Abbott outlined a three-year roadmap defining updated packaging principles that:

Employ circularity principles through smart design and material selectionEliminate and reduce materialsImprove the energy efficiency of Abbott’s productsOptimize packaging, pallet and truckload efficiency

One standout example of this initiative is the 2022 redesign of the BinaxNOW COVID-19 test kits that reduced package weight and materials. By consolidating two information sheets into one, eliminating a plastic tray and resizing the cardboard carton and corrugated case, Abbott was able to make the packaging for BinaxNOW 27% smaller and 58% lighter. With more than 497 million BinaxNOW tests manufactured in 2022, these changes eliminated approximately 26.7 million pounds of packaging, including more than 9.8 million pounds of plastic.1 These modifications also allowed for greater efficiencies in the packing and shipping of BinaxNOW tests, resulting in the use of roughly 9,500 fewer 20-foot shipping containers.2

Abbott also designed the FreeStyle Libre 3 system to be more sustainable with a smaller, more discreet sensor and a one-piece applicator that reduce the total volume by more than 70%. The new sensor design uses 40% less plastic and requires 43% less carton paper than previous FreeStyle Libre systems.

Multiple projects are also underway across Abbott’s Nutrition business, including increasing production of Ensure and Pediasure bottles made from fully recyclable materials. Additionally, our Established Pharmaceuticals business is addressing more than 280,000 pounds of packaging by transitioning non-recyclable glass bottles to recyclable plastic.

Beyond the positive impact on the environment, Abbott believes these packaging efforts make good business sense by improving efficiencies, reducing costs, and ensuring market access around the world.

Helping other Regions Bank associates bag 11,000 diapers for Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank in Birmingham, Alabama, in a little over two hours, Jason Epstein thought of the impact diapers have made in his own child’s life.

“It’s particularly important to me as the father to a 3-year-old and knowing the need for diapers for so many in the community,” said Epstein, head of Consumer Support and Performance Solutions for Regions’ Consumer Banking Group.

“This really does give us the opportunity to help improve someone’s life, and that makes it very special to me.”

Epstein and other Regions volunteers bundled enough diapers to supply more than 220 babies for a month. It was all part of Regions’ first summertime Volunteer Extravaganza July 27-28, thanks to the Associates in Action℠ volunteer program of the Making Life Better Institute℠.

Regions’ largest volunteer effort in a 24-hour period involved more than 160 associates from eight different business lines and benefited nine Birmingham area nonprofits.

“Our first Regions Volunteer Extravaganza was extremely impactful, with more than 500 volunteer hours logged by associates working together to support organizations in the Birmingham area and demonstrate what we value as a company,” said Consumer Banking Regional Executive Steve Nivet.

“We fostered teamwork, collaboration and reinforced our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve.”

While Epstein bagged diapers, Pritha Powell toiled in the muggy heat at the Jones Valley Teaching Farm – pulling weeds and clearing debris alongside the students managing the two-acre farm in the Woodlawn community.

“I enjoyed meeting the students working at the farm and hearing their stories,” said Powell, who leads Regions’ Credit Card and Direct Lending Products teams. “We cleaned out half their planting beds in two hours and know it would have taken the two of them much longer by themselves.”

“Knowing associates from across the bank were helping so many in Birmingham all in one day made it magical for me.”

The Volunteer Extravaganza gave Clyde Tisdale, manager of Regions’ Government and Institutional Banking team, the chance to share his passion for the work of The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. He’s the vice president of its board.

Tisdale and other volunteers packed 168 food boxes for The Community Food Bank’s mobile pantries in its 12-county service area, and 462 boxes of food for its Senior Grocery Program.

“The event was a huge success, and because of my work with The Community Food Bank, I wanted to be a part of this very special Regions team effort,” Tisdale said. “The experience was energizing and rewarding, especially knowing who it will help and the difference it will make.”

Over at East Lake Initiative, Executive Director Pam Bates watched Regions volunteers pack 200 backpacks with school supplies to support its holistic community development mission in Jefferson County.

“It was a joy to watch the teams work together to fill the backpacks with supplies and then hear stories of actual people who would benefit from these supplies and pick up the backpacks two days later,” Bates said.

“The experience allowed us to share the reason for the supply drive, which frees up money for our families so they can apply those funds to other financial needs,” she said. “We also had the chance to hear what Regions is already doing to support low- to moderate-income families and talk about other ways we could work together.”

Regions’ strategic approach to community investment focuses on economic and community development, education and workforce readiness and financial wellness.

Creating Shared Value One Act of Service at a Time

More than 375 nonprofit organizations and schools in Birmingham have already benefited from Regions associates’ volunteerism this year.

In 2022, Regions associates provided 74,000 hours of volunteerism through a variety of programs complementing the bank’s year-round community engagement activities — bringing its values of putting people first and creating shared value to life.

Bailey Real, assistant director for Pathways, which empowers women and children on their paths out of homelessness through hospitality, housing and hope, said the Volunteer Extravaganza couldn’t have come at a better time.

Regions volunteers assembled furniture, painted two offices and helped place 35 new mattresses, with the United Way agency also gaining at least one new volunteer from the experience.

“The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is when we see the most volunteering,” Real said. “During the summer, people go on vacations and are doing other activities, so volunteering is not on their radar as much.

“Projects like this one, and especially at this time of year, are a huge help to us.”

OLYMPIA and BELLEVUE, Wash., September 8, 2023 /3BL/ – Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz gave an update on how the Department of Natural Resources is using advanced AI technology that provides actionable intelligence to attack wildfires as soon as they start. Technology and cameras from Pano AI leveraging the T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) 5G network have enabled early detection and monitoring that has provided richer data on wildfires as they emerge.

The current pilot program has deployed 9 ultra-high-definition, 360-degree cameras across the state with 12 expected to be installed by summer 2024. The visual data from the cameras, combined with satellites and other data feeds with artificial intelligence, provide active wildfire detection and up-to-the-minute situational awareness. Using cameras to identify smoke and fire immediately as it appears on the landscape and pinpoint the latitude and longitude or bearing line of a fire will significantly increase DNR’s ability to get resources on scene and alert nearby communities of danger in their area. It has already assisted with initial attack on several fires, including Crater Creek in NE Region.

“With wildfire every second counts,” said Hilary Franz, Commissioner of Public Lands. “Increased early detection through deploying technology like Pano AI means we can respond faster while fires are still small—saving lives and property while reducing costs — which is crucial as wildfire seasons get longer and more challenging.”

Pano AI is the first disaster-preparedness technology provider to offer a fully integrated product for active wildfire detection using artificial intelligence to help fire authorities identify and extinguish new ignitions before they become a threat. Harnessing the latest developments in hardware, artificial intelligence, cloud-based software and 5G connectivity, Pano AI provides fire agencies with real-time actionable intelligence and situational awareness to coordinate an informed rapid response to wildfires before they escalate, safeguarding lives, communities, and the environment.

“We see Washington Department of Natural Resources as a national leader in adopting new technologies for wildfire mitigation,” said Sonia Kastner, CEO and founder of Pano AI. “This technology is designed to serve frontline responders by providing new tools that make fire fighting safer and help enable a more swift and effective response to new ignitions. Our partnership with T-Mobile has allowed us to better serve the State of Washington by integrating cutting edge 5G connectivity into our solution, which unlocks higher performance and enables cellular connectivity in ever more remote locations.”

“We are honored to be working with Pano AI and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to help fight the growing threat of wildfires in our home state,” said John Saw, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at T-Mobile. “Our 5G network is built to support innovative and groundbreaking use cases like this, providing robust connectivity where it’s needed most.”

In addition to cameras from Pano AI, the Department of Natural Resources is using other new and improved technologies to fight wildfires such as deployable Starlink satellite packages, an expanded radio repeater network for smartphones, COWs (Cellular on Wheels) that expand cell and WiFi coverage, and other resources to keep firefighters and incident command management systems connected. DNR is committed to using the latest technology to keep firefighters safe and help them save lives, livelihoods, and property, while keeping wildfires from becoming catastrophic.

Supply chain operators have narrowed their focus on sustainability and decarbonization thanks to increasing market and regulatory pressures. According to Deloitte, “One of the hottest of the hot buttons for investors, customers, and regulators is better performance and disclosure related to a company’s climate impact.”

Deloitte’s view is supported by a recent survey-driven report that DP World conducted in partnership with Supply Chain Dive’s studioID. The report – “Supply Chains Prepping for a Greener, More Agile Future” – is based on a survey of nearly 160 leaders from across the supply chain, operations and IT sectors, which found that pressure around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) is now a top-three challenge for their supply chains, ranking right up there with demand and supply variability (41%) and inflexibility/inability to adapt quickly to change (34%), and tied with regulatory and compliance challenges (28%).

Download the full report.

The newly elevated mission to decarbonize their supply chains has these organizations reordering their priorities and shifting how they allocate resources to set up more sustainable, lower-carbon supply chain operations.

Supplier decarbonization is a big focus.

Suppliers, of course, play a central role in any organization’s decarbonization efforts. Thus, when choosing suppliers and collaborators, respondents indicated potential partners’ decarbonization and sustainability capabilities are becoming critical decision factors.

In fact, eight in 10 (84%) called these capabilities extremely or very influential in the selection process. Additionally, the ability to support respondents’ carbon reduction goals tied for the second-most-important factor influencing their choice of supply chain solution provider (37%). Their organizations are also monitoring or adding ESG requirements for their current tier one (50%) and tier two (61%) suppliers.

How are internal operations shifting?

Sustainability changes are affecting internal operations, too.

Three in five survey respondents told us they are taking or planning to take action on supply chain optimization to support their ESG goals. These activities include reducing transportation distances, consolidating shipments and optimizing inventory levels. Their companies are also adopting energy-efficient practices and investments, such as employing fuel-efficient driving practices (38%), using more energy-efficient transportation methods (38%) and reducing energy use in warehouses (35%).

These tactics should sound familiar to those who follow DP World, which recently committed to several large-scale energy efficiency investments. For example:

We are investing $500 million to cut nearly 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions from our operations over the next five years by transitioning our global fleet of assets from diesel to electric, investing in renewable power, and exploring alternative fuels. DP World Chile utilizes 100% renewable electricity across all its ports and, in doing so, became the first port operator in South America to secure renewable electricity certification. In Canada, DP World provides shore power at its Prince Rupert and Vancouver ports. Shore power is an emissions-reduction technology that enables ships to turn off their diesel-powered auxiliary engines and plug into British Columbia’s low-emission energy. We’re investing in nature-based solutions by planting 100,000 mangroves — one of the most effective CO2 nature-based sequestration methods — in the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary in Dubai. We are investing in electrification throughout South America, purchasing a fleet of 20 electric internal terminal vehicles for use at our terminal in Callao, Peru, and replacing 22 diesel RTGs at the Port of Santos in Brazil with electric versions.

Expectations are high for ESG investments.

Survey respondents are confident in the payoff they expect from their investments in ESG. Top anticipated benefits include increasing efficiency (83% call it very or somewhat significant), increasing access to needed specialized services such as labeling or kitting (52% very, 38% somewhat), and increasing the value of their organizations to business partners/other stakeholders (49% very, 41% somewhat), among other benefits.

These findings dovetail perfectly with DP World’s “Our World, Our Future” sustainability strategy, aimed at adopting the practices, mindsets and technology that will move our customers’ goods and services faster and more sustainably. It’s quite clear that sustainability has broken through to become a top focus for the future of supply chains, and it needs to be a priority in every supply chain decision moving forward.
