Sustainability is front-of-mind for the packaging industry as large companies pursue ambitious objectives to meet consumer demands and achieve higher environmental standards.

To support these efforts, HDG—a machine builder based in Germany and a member of The Packaging Group—is redesigning its machines to help its customers use natural packaging materials, minimize resources, reduce electricity, and monitor energy consumption. And to help make that happen, HDG is making use of Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) industrial automation technologies.

In a recent successful project, HDG helped a large European manufacturer rethink product packaging to increase recyclability and reduce energy consumption. The European manufacturer wanted to transition from traditional laminated film packaging, which is difficult to recycle, to 100% recyclable, paper-based bagging.

HDG, which specializes in the horizontal form, fill, and seal systems used to fill and seal bags, is also working with Rockwell to develop an energy monitoring solution that will help the European manufacturer access and visualize data to reduce energy use. As an early result of this work, HDG has uncovered an opportunity to lower the temperature of the heat used to seal bags—which will reduce energy costs by 20%. The video above provides further insights.

Learn more about this innovation in industrial packaging, and how Rockwell is helping original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like HDG to re-engineer machines for sustainability.

The Forum followed the U.S. Treasury’s publication of net-zero financing principles highlighting best practices for financial institutions

NEW YORK, September 20, 2023 /3BL/ – Yesterday, global leaders across the public and private sectors convened at the Bloomberg Transition Finance Action Forum, which took place at the Plaza Hotel in New York City and coincided with New York Climate Week and the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly. The discussion focused on progress to date in transition finance and actions needed to support the net-zero transition in the run up to COP28.

Leaders unequivocally committed to accelerating action toward the net-zero transition, highlighting the key components necessary to identify the risks and seize transition-related opportunities, including transition finance, supportive public policy, the phaseout of high-emitting assets, and freely available data to provide accountability and transparency into global climate progress. For the first time, the U.S. Department of the Treasury outlined principles for net-zero financing that reinforce the strategic imperative for financial institutions to align their financing with the transition to net zero.

UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and Co-Chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero Michael R. Bloomberg opened the Forum, highlighting how private finance can be a powerful force for the net-zero transition. “Changing the tide on climate change is not a technological challenge, it’s a financial challenge. Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies are committed to doing our part – including by bringing more transparency and accountability to the fight against climate change, which is a critical piece of the puzzle,” said Bloomberg.

Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Janet Yellen provided the keynote address, highlighting U.S. support for net-zero transition finance principles to affirm the importance of credible net-zero commitments and to encourage financial institutions to take consistent approaches to implementation.

“As part of initiatives like the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, more than 650 institutions representing roughly 40 percent of global financial assets have made commitments to support the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner,” said Yellen. “In the U.S., there is no requirement that these institutions make such commitments. Yet more than 100 U.S. financial institutions have voluntarily done so. Many of them have also developed plans to take these commitments forward and started reporting on their progress.”

Secretary Yellen reiterated the Treasury Department’s commitment to supporting the implementation of net-zero commitments and shaping technical work. “We remain committed to co-leading the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group and supporting the delivery of the Net-Zero Data Public Utility. And we will continue to implement the tax provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act; carry out analytical work on the impact of climate change on household finances and insurance affordability and availability; and engage with community development financial institutions on their climate-related priorities, among other ongoing work,” said Yellen.

As part of the Leader Spotlight, Bloomberg TV editor-at-large Francine Lacqua interviewed the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. “If you look at the world, we are off track, without any question,” said von der Leyen. “But I am deeply convinced and I am confident that we can accelerate and we can be better… We have been able to prove in the European Union that the transition to a circular, clean economy is our new growth strategy.”

“The world needs more cooperation between countries, because this is not a problem with an individual or isolated solution,” said Minister of Finance of Brazil Fernando Haddad.

“I want to underscore how important the announcement that Secretary Yellen just made is, and the content around that: these principles on transition financing and investment,” said UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance and Co-Chair of Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero Mark Carney, who interviewed Finance Minister Haddad and moderated the following panel on global transition planning.

“While there is no doubt about how much work is left to do, we are lucky to have incredible leadership around the globe in both the public and the private sectors,” said GFANZ Vice Chair Mary Schapiro. “Leaders who are matching the scale of the challenge with creative solutions, the courage to make difficult decisions and the wisdom to act decisively now.”

“Our ambition is to be able to flood the world with so much data and measurements that they don’t have to worry about the data and the measurements. That what they will worry about are the action plans associated with dealing with the transition,” said Chairman and CEO of MSCI Henry A. Fernandez.

“The early retirement of coal cannot be achieved by the private sector alone. It requires public policy. It requires public financial support in certain countries. So those are challenging parts of the transition to green energy, and we have to find a way to scale that fast,” said HSBC Group Chief Executive Noel Quinn.

“It’s about data. Data on emissions for emerging markets and companies in emerging markets. Otherwise, we don’t know if we’re pricing risk, we don’t know if we’re actually financing transition without this data,” said Chair of Prudential plc and Co-Chair of the World Bank Private Sector Investment Lab Shriti Vadera.

Since joining DraftKings in 2020, I have been impressed with how the dialogue around Responsible Gaming (RG) has expanded in the entire industry. The collaborative efforts of stakeholders from across the industry is greater than ever, and the focus on education is the nexus of the dialogue. For the month of September, we are joining the American Gaming Association in commemorating 25 years of Responsible Gaming Education Month, and DraftKings will be highlighting the commitments we have made in keeping responsible gaming education at the forefront of the player experience, beginning with employee education.

The most important components of an RG program are education, training, and tools. We want our players, as well as our employees, to be as informed as possible in RG. We utilize a holistic, systems-based approach to RG that requires engagement between a wide array of stakeholders. Our approach is founded in public health frameworks and involves educating and engaging with employees to ensure that all internal stakeholders understand their role as responsible gaming ambassadors.

We provide as many resources and touch points to our organization and employees as possible. We go above and beyond in our RG training, which means that not only do we get in front of all new employees at on-boarding and require mandatory RG training annually, but we also work with our internal stakeholder teams to provide customized training and education throughout the year. One of the major ways that we accomplish that goal is through our robust internal Safer Play Portal, which is designed to enhance the culture of responsible gaming as a core value at DraftKings. This site offers up-to-date responsible gaming resources and training opportunities to all DraftKings employees.

Our Safer Play Portal provides a one-stop-shop on all things RG at DraftKings. Here we provide helpful definitions about RG, interactive quizzes, common “mythconceptions”, highlights of our Safer Play Champion employees who have gone above and beyond in their jobs to support and embrace RG, rapid research reviews, lived experience presentations, access to internal resources and so much more.

Socializing the importance of RG to our employees is imperative. As our program continues to evolve and we learn more about best practices in the RG space, we remain informed by prevailing research, customer and community input, and consultation with our partners at the Harvard Medical School affiliate, Cambridge Health Alliance.

I am also honored to share that for the second year in a row DraftKings has been recognized by the National Council on Problem Gambling with the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program award for outstanding commitment to social responsibility as it relates to responsible gaming. This achievement is a team effort and underscores our steadfast commitment to continually promoting responsible gaming by educating and training our employees.

September 20, 2023 /3BL/ – Today Bonsucro, the leading global sustainability platform for sugarcane, and Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), that establishes a partnership between the two apex organisations, to share knowledge and create joint initiatives to accelerate sustainability practices in the Indian sugar industry. The MoU represents a milestone for a collaboration to create a sustainable roadmap for the Indian sugar industry.

Right now, the climate crisis is deepening and sustainability challenges require systemic change. India is one of the worlds top sugarcane producers and is a priority country for Bonsucro. The country is acutely feeling the impact of climate change – the World Resources Institute puts India as the 13th most water stressed country in the world. India is also vulnerable to extreme heat waves which can damage crops, reduce yields and therefore income. There are also health risks of heat stress for farmers and cane cutters working in high temperatures.

Bonsucro’s footprint in India has been steadily growing over the years, there are now 35 members in the country, nine of which mills certified against the Bonsucro Production Standard. Organisations under Bonsucro membership are predominantly mills and farmers but Bonsucro also has productive relationships with local representatives of brands such as PepsiCo, Bacardi and Unilever. ISMA is the body representing private sugar mills in India, working towards the development and growth of the sugar industry. By collaborating, ISMA and Bonsucro can create a more sustainable sugarcane sector in India.

The Memorandum of Understanding includes knowledge sharing, capacity building, sustainability assessments, policy engagement, and advocacy.

Collective action and knowledge sharing are central to Bonsucro’s role as a platform for change. The MoU includes an agreement to share best practices and research findings in relation to sustainable sugarcane and bioenergy production. This will include Bonsucro’s existing tools as well as producing new resources created for the local context, relating to efficient agricultural practices, water conservation, waste management, and energy optimisation techniques.

To drive sustainability across the sector, access to training and accurate, relevant resources are essential. By collaborating with ISMA, Bonsucro plans to organise joint workshops and seminars to increase the capacity of staff working in sugar mills as well as farmers and broader stakeholders. These initiatives will focus on improving the environmental impact of sugarcane and strengthening the social approaches to sugarcane cultivation and processing as well as bioenergy production.

ISMA and Bonsucro will work together to develop and implement sustainability assessment frameworks for the Indian sugar industry. This will involve conducting regular evaluations to measure the environmental, social, and economic performance of sugar mills, benchmarking against industry standards, and providing recommendations for improvement.

Commenting on MoU, Mr Jhunjhunwala, President of ISMA said, “Today we are starting a partnership for the planet, a partnership for our industry and for the recognition it deserves. Sugar and sustainability go hand in hand, no other crop has more potential to be a force of good for the planet as sugarcane whether it is through bio-power, bio-ethanol or other forms of bioenergy and with this partnership with Bonsucro we hope that these don’t just remain words but also translate into certifiable, verifiable reality so that both the farmer and industry can benefit from their contributions to the planet.”

The MoU was signed at a lunch event in New Delhi on 20 September, attended by ISMA, Bonsucro members, and other stakeholders. This took place ahead of the Sugar and Bioenergy Conference on 21 and 22 September. Bonsucro’s CEO, Danielle Morley, will speak at the event about how sustainable sugarcane can help create a net zero future at the conference.

Speaking about the formalisation of the relationship between Bonsucro and ISMA, Danielle Morley, said, “India is rapidly changing and as the sugarcane sector looks to the future, knowledge-based collaborations like this are essential. By working more closely with ISMA, Bonsucro can support the Indian sugar and bioenergy sector to achieve net zero targets and contribute to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.”

As the company continues its focus on strategic growth and sustainability, Southwire has been awarded the supply of a portion of the underground power cables for Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) by NKT, the project’s turnkey cable supplier and cable system technology owner. CHPE is a transmission project that will deliver 1,250 megawatts of clean, renewable hydropower from the U.S.-Canadian border to Queens, N.Y., enough power for more than one million New York homes.

During National Black Business Month, Regions Bank is highlighting Black entrepreneurs and organizations like the National Urban League, who are helping small-business owners build long-term success.

Small Business Matters.

That was the theme at the entrepreneur summit at the National Urban League Annual Conference. And Regions, which has a rich history with the organization, played a significant role at the Houston gathering in highlighting a shared priority: supporting and advancing Black-owned businesses.

“Small and minority-owned businesses are important drivers for our local economies – in small towns, rural communities and large metropolitan areas,” according to Leroy Abrahams, head of Community Affairs at Regions Bank.

“At Regions, we understand how critical it is for these businesses to flourish, and teams across the bank work to serve, support and provide resources to ensure their success and continue to create more inclusive economic development in our communities.”

Abrahams was on hand for the National Urban League conference, along with Latrisha Jemison, Regional Community Development Manager and other members of Community Affairs. They were joined by a team of Regions bankers who participated in a panel discussion at the Small Business Matters Entrepreneurship Summit.

“The National Urban League Conference is one of our most important events of the year,” Jemison said. “And being able to engage with Black business owners and entrepreneurs and provide advice and guidance to them was a great opportunity for us.”

Supporting and Elevating Businesses

The discussion was led by Chad Cargile, Commercial Banking leader at Regions, and focused on a very timely topic: rising interest rates and the special challenges experienced by small business owners.

“Our Regions Bank team is incredibly proud to welcome the National Urban League Annual Conference to Houston,” Cargile said as he opened the discussion.

“Regions is committed to supporting and elevating small businesses, particularly in under-resourced communities, to help advance their growth. We know that every entrepreneur’s journey is different, meaning every small-business owner has different needs.”

Cargile then introduced the panel, which included Carl Brown, Regions branch manager; Shawntay Johnson, Regions Commercial Banking relationship manager; Eric Goodie, senior vice president of the Houston Area Urban League; and Phillip Yates, co-founder of Diversity Fund Houston and founder of EQUILIBERTY, INC.

The group talked about the challenges small businesses are facing with rising interest rates – from each of their unique vantage points. They provided tips, tools and resources – and also discussed how an unpredictable rate environment can actually introduce opportunities.

Regions bankers Brown and Johnson spoke about the importance of relationships and how critical it is to have ongoing dialog during challenging economic times.

“Transparency and trust are key,” Johnson told the audience. “Make sure your banker is aware of your goals, your other banking relationships and any other information that can assist when you’re working together to identify solutions.”

The team received positive feedback about the session, and the Regions bankers were available after the discussion to spend extra time with audience members for additional one-on-one advice about their small-business needs.

In addition to the Small Business Matters Entrepreneurship Summit, Regions associates were also involved in the NUL conference’s Community Day event and other programs.

“The National Urban League has been advocating for economic justice for African Americans for more than 100 years,” Jemison said. “I’m pleased that we can work together toward common goals – such as providing support for Black-owned businesses. And I look forward to continuing this relationship for many years to come.”

This short video, which highlights some examples of Regions’ support of Black-owned business, was shown at the National Urban League Conference.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., September 20, 2023 /3BL/ – The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has recognized a Black & Veatch-designed project— the Orange County Water District Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) Final Expansion — with a Project Excellence Award. WEF’s annual Project Excellence Award pays tribute to excellence and innovation in the execution of projects and programs in the water sector.

The GWRS produces high-quality recycled water used to recharge the Orange County Groundwater Basin, which is the primary potable water supply for more than 2.5 million people in California. The final expansion project added 30 million gallons a day (mgd) to the system’s capacity, upping its total to 130 mgd, and for the first time, enabling 100 percent of the area’s reclaimable wastewater flows to be recycled.

“This groundwater replenishment project is a great example of reimaging infrastructure in order to create a resilient, sustainable water supply,” said James Clark, Senior Vice President at Black & Veatch and design project manager for both the initial expansion and final expansion. “The Orange County Water District was able to fortify the reliability of drinking water supply, reduce the region’s dependence on water imports and improve water quality.”

The expansion was dedicated in 2023 and culminated nearly 50 years of collaboration between the Orange County Water District and Orange County Sanitation District, aided from the beginning by Black & Veatch, to bring water sustainability and resilience to their customers.

Phoenix-based creator and CEO of Pilates King L.L.C. Ade McCray is on a mission to make Pilates more accessible for all. A graduate of GoDaddy’s signature social impact program, Empower by GoDaddy, Ade shares how he accelerated his small business success through new digital skills, mentorship, resources and networking offered by the partnership between GoDaddy and the Better Business Bureau of the Pacific Southwest.

Ade hit a plateau in his career in 2021 and combined with state-mandated quarantines during the Covid-19 pandemic, he felt it was the perfect time to start a new business. Ade’s vision was to make Pilates – a full-body workout that improves muscle tone, flexibility and strength – more accessible. Specifically, he hoped to reach those seeking exercise who were either stuck at home, unable to join a gym, or who couldn’t afford expensive instructor-led studio classes. His vision is to engage clients around the world to participate in outdoor Pilates-based exercises. His method uses resistance bands anchored to a vehicle while engaging in standing Pilates-based exercises at a specific location.

“I’ve always been motivated by and had a curiosity for health and movement,” said Ade. I found myself searching for alternative options where you could benefit from exercise without needing expensive gym equipment. I thought Pilates could be a very good avenue for people who may not be able to afford studio classes and cross training equipment.”

Ade’s journey to Pilates King was unique. He grew up in West Africa before moving to the U.S. in 1986 and joining the Navy for two and a half years. Over time, he became interested in the arts, particularly dance. He even had a dance contract with the German Opera for six years. Following his time as a dancer, Ade picked up Pilates, where he trained and served as an instructor for the next 15 years before taking the leap into entrepreneurship.

Now, his full-time job is getting Pilates King off the ground. However, since entrepreneurship is new to Ade, getting started hasn’t been without its challenges. Advertising, networking, financing, and understanding business operations, in particular, have been some of Ade’s largest hurdles. But a steep learning curve hasn’t stopped Ade from achieving his goals.

For Ade, success means creating opportunities where people feel comfortable and equal. His short-term goal for Pilates King is to launch a mobile app for his business, and long-term, he hopes to support customers globally and make his business accessible to everyone around the world.

“I’m inspired to do my best to care for mankind and make positive change that will help future generations,” said Ade. “Everything else will fall into place.”

Ade shares that the Empower by GoDaddy program helped to fill in gaps of knowledge about business ownership. Empower by GoDaddy provides entrepreneurs in underserved communities with training, tools and peer networks to accelerate their journeys. Ade came into the program open-mindedly and absorbed as much information as he could, using tools like GoDaddy Studio and GoDaddy’s AI Prompt Library. The information he learned in Empower by GoDaddy helped him build his business through online advertising, something about which he previously knew little.

“I had a clear vision for my business but there were just some nuances in running a business that I needed support with,” said Ade. “Getting involved with Empower by GoDaddy helped me to make sense of all that goes into business ownership, and my operations are getting much better.”

For first-time entrepreneurs like Ade and those interested in starting a business of their own, Ade said, “Be true to yourself and stick with your idea. Consistency and follow-through are very important. You might get discouraged, but practice discipline and you will be successful.”

Ade’s story is just one example of how GoDaddy is working to make entrepreneurship more inclusive for all. To learn more about Empower by GoDaddy, visit: https://www.godaddy.com/godaddy-for-good/empower
