For as long as Quincy Pulliam could remember, he gazed up at the sky to watch the airplanes fly by at his mother’s beauty salon. Located in Euless, Texas, it was perfectly positioned near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to watch planes land and take off.

It was also at that salon where Quincy formed strong connections that led him to discover his passion for aviation and find support through lifelong mentors and where he began his journey to become a pilot. His mentors introduced him to the CR Smith Museum Aviation STEM Summer Camp and the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) that supported him on his journey to success at American.

Quincy, now a captain at American Airlines, is determined to pay it forward by inspiring the next generation of aviators to pursue their dreams.

September 22, 2023 /3BL/ – Major U.S. companies and business groups are celebrating the new collaboration and commitments among more than two-dozen U.S. governors, who have pledged to work together to advance strategies that eliminate emissions from buildings and collectively quadruple heat pump installations by the end of the decade.

Following the announcement today by the 25 governors in the U.S. Climate Alliance at Climate Week NYC 2023, more than a dozen companies, institutions, and trade groups released a letter supporting new state-to-state collaboration. The signatories to the letter include several building solutions leaders, such as JLL, Johnson Controls, NAESCO, Schneider Electric, Sealed, Siemens, Trane Technologies, and ZenniHome, as well as other major businesses such as Burton, CommonSpirit, DSM, Grove Collaborative, Legacy Vacations and Resorts, Mass General and San Francisco Airport.

“Bold action by state leaders is urgently needed to send clear, long-term economic signals to manufacturers, developers, building and business owners, and residents alike. Building decarbonization is essential to our ambitious climate goals and overall air quality and public health,” the letter reads. “We strongly support the execution of multi-state collaborative approaches to develop and implement market-enabling initiatives that unlock the long-term savings, and climate and clean air benefits of building decarbonization.”

Residential and commercial buildings are responsible for 40% of annual energy consumption, making it a leading cause of climate and air pollution. Energy efficiency and building electrification policies are critical to reducing pollution and its harmful effects.

The signatories of the letter emphasized support for state policy efforts that incorporate specific building sector initiatives within their climate action plans, including gas transition planning, expanding energy efficiency and electrification programs, accelerating heat pump adoption, and approving more ambitious energy codes, equipment standards, and building performance standards. Companies recognize these policies are vital both to reduce the risks that climate change poses to their facilities, supply chains, and workforces, and to enhance efficiency and electrification efforts that lower energy costs.

To enable residential consumers to generate clean energy at home, the company offers a range of home solar, EV charging, and battery systems to its customers. In 2022, the company provided retail access to solar panels for more than 7,000 homes and recorded sales of over 4,000 EV chargers. Recipients of the award notably follow the example of Ely S. Parker, a 19th-century Seneca Nation chief who broke multiple racial barriers while establishing an enduring legacy that continues to inspire today’s Indigenous leaders. Watson says, “I am very touched by receiving this honor to represent AISES with this prestigious award. It speaks to the dreams, values, and aspirations of so many Natives that being successful in the STEM fields is innate to who we are as Indigenous people. It has been an honor and blessing to be part of so many lives of the AISES family and supporters from establishing AISES student chapters, professional chapters, to mentoring, all involving community outreach. I am grateful my journey has led me to the Architectural and Engineering fields to build sustainable communities. This award is precious to me because I share this honor with all of you, we share a common goal to reach, inspire, and create great opportunities for many to follow.”

Watson is a passionate advocate for Indigenous people in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). A Sequoyah Fellow, she is a longtime AISES member who has amply demonstrated her commitment to the organization’s mission. She held a seat on the Board of Directors from 1995 to 1997, helping to guide the AISES headquarters transition from Colorado to New Mexico. She later filled other AISES roles including chair of the Membership Committee and secretary of the Board of Directors from 2009 to 2010, and again from 2012 to 2015. She also served on the Editorial Advisory Council for Winds of Change magazine, the premier AISES publication, and as vice president of AISES Publishing, Inc., from 2014 to 2015. She has often assisted in the coordination and facilitation of National Conference sessions for student advisors and as a presenter at National and Regional Conferences.

A principal focus for Watson at AISES has been professional and student chapter development, and she has extended herself as a Full Circle mentor. She co-founded the first California AISES Professional Chapter in 1993, and when she relocated to Pasadena, Calif., she co-founded the Southern California AISES Professional Chapter and served as president.

Watson, who is Navajo (Diné) from Wide Ruins, Arizona, and Tohlakai, N.M. , was raised in Oakland, Calif. Her clans are Kinlichii’nii (Red House People), and Nakai Diné (Mexican Clan People). Her record of academic achievement is impressive. She holds three master’s degrees: a Master of Divinity (Fuller Theological Seminary, 2012), an MS in Civil Engineering , Construction and Engineering Management (UC Berkeley, 1992), and an MA in Architecture (UC Berkley, 1991; two bachelor’s degrees: a BA degree in Christian Ministry (2004) and a BA in Architecture (UC Berkeley, 1985); and an AA in Biblical Studies (2002).

Watson has had a distinguished and varied career spanning 38 years. Currently a civil engineer with the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs, Watson leads a technical administrative team responsible for program and project management of the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP). Beyond engineering, her background includes a list of diverse roles: training specialist, chaplain, architectural designer, civil designer, job captain, and project manager. This versatile professional is trained in disaster management, homeland security, and emergency management and serves as a Brigade Chaplain with the Alaska State Defense Force, with the rank of Captain.

Watson has participated in the clinical pastoral education (CPE) chaplain residency program for seven semester units at Providence Alaska Medical Center and volunteers at the award-winning Alaska Native Medical Center. As a clinically trained chaplain, she works with an interdisciplinary team to provide the best care to Alaska Native and American Indian people from across the largest state in the U.S.

The Ely S. Parker Award is one of her many impressive honors, which include the Alaska Humanitarian Service Medal (2023), the Alaska Community Service Medal (2023), and the Alaska Native Commendation Medal (2019). Her list of awards reflects her strong leadership in serving others. In 1992 she was instrumental in launching the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day declaration in the City of Berkeley, Calif., where she was part of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day committee. Last year — 30 years later —she worked with the original Indigenous artist to contribute innovative artwork for the Turtle Island Monument Project in Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park. The monument commemorates the lasting history, beauty, and resilience of the Native nations of Turtle Island.

Watson will be honored as the 2023 Ely S. Parker Award winner at the AISES National Conference Closing Banquet on Saturday, October 21, in Spokane, Wash.

A tweak to Ele.me’s interface cut single-use cutlery by 648% between 2019-2020: studyAcademics urge widespread adoption of such green nudges to reduce plastic waste

Small lifestyle changes can make a big impact when adopted at scale. In China, the country of big numbers, the results can be dramatic when consumers make greener choices.

Economists explored how businesses in the world’s second-biggest economy can gently “nudge” online shoppers to become eco-friendlier without losing out to polluting competitors.

The study focused on reducing plastic and deforestation as urgent concerns. In 2021, more than 400 million metric tons of plastic waste were produced worldwide. In 2022, the world lost 22.8 million hectares of tree cover, roughly the size of Romania.

The team worked with China-based Ele.me to study how turning the default option on app to “no cutlery” would alter consumer behavior when they ordered a food delivery. A set of utensils in China typically includes a plastic fork, spoon, a pair of wooden chopsticks and a napkin, creating plastic waste and consuming trees.

Ele.me’s nudge succeeded in pushing up the share of utensil-free food deliveries by 648% versus a control group, all at a minimal cost to Ele.me, a unit of Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group.

The study estimated that if the entire food-delivery industry in China nudged consumers in a greener direction it would save over 21.75 billion sets of single-use cutlery annually, equal to 3.26 million metric tons of plastic waste and 5.44 million trees.

“Nudges can be a powerful tool to change behaviors,” concluded the study, which appeared in Science magazine this month.

Shaping Habits

“Great acts are made up of small deeds,” a quote attributed to Chinese Taoist philosopher Laozi, captures the thinking globally among policymakers and in boardrooms on our collective task of cutting pollution.

The challenge is figuring out how to shape consumer behavior. Research suggests choices do not always result from knowledge but also from habit and surroundings.

Ele.me’s approach was to change the user journey. It set the default option in a pop-up window on its interface to “no cutlery” and awarded points to users who stuck with the setting. Users could redeem the points via a project run by Alibaba’s affiliate Ant Group, whereby the points grow into a virtual tree on the user’s app, which Alipay matches by planting a real tree.

The study compared the behavior of 197,062 randomly selected Ele.me users’ monthly food-ordering history. The exercise spanned Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin between 2019 and 2020, where the “nudge” was applied, against a group of seven control cities before and after the introduction of nudges.

When the results came in, the researchers found they had detected a potentially game-changing business strategy. The nudges, on average, increased an individual’s share of no-cutlery orders by 20.1 percentage points, a 648% increase relative to the baseline group.

While parsing the numbers for insights, they found that green nudges incentivized a large portion of individuals to somewhat change their behaviors rather than encouraging only a small portion to change their behaviors substantially. The study also found that women, older generations, frequent food-delivery service users, and the wealthy were more responsive to a nudge.

The study estimated that the nudges reduced cutlery use by over 225.33 million sets in 27 months. This implies the nudge may have prevented the generation of 4,506.52 metric tons of waste and saved 56,333 trees. Further, if all the green points rewarded were used to plant trees, 112,665 additional trees could have been planted by Alibaba.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., September 21, 2023 /3BL/ – Andrea Bernica, who was Black & Veatch’s lead employment and corporate counsel before serving as Chairman and CEO Mario Azar’s chief of staff, has been named Chief People Officer of the global critical infrastructure solutions leader.

A lawyer by trade and an existing member of Black & Veatch’s leadership team, Bernica as a new president will lead all elements of the company’s global human resource strategy while managing talent and organizational capability, cultivating an inclusive, high-performing work environment with professionals from diverse backgrounds.

Bernica, who joined the entirely employee-owned company in 2011, previously served as its vice president and lead employment and corporate counsel, overseeing corporate compliance and enterprise risk management functions. Most recently as chief of staff, she collaborated with Azar on companywide strategic objectives, helped prioritize and track progress of companywide initiatives, and shepherded follow-through on decisions and actions for the Black & Veatch Board of Directors. She also has served as assistant secretary to the board.

Louisville’s Russell neighborhood, one of the nine communities of Fifth Third’s Empowering Black Futures program, will soon have a new affordable housing complex called The Eclipse, which is slated to welcome families in late 2024. Fifth Third made a $21.9 million construction loan in support of The Eclipse, which is a project of LDG Development.

The creation and sustainability of affordable housing is one of the goals of Fifth Third’s Empowering Black Futures program, an innovative place-based approach to community development in which Fifth Third works with a lead community organization to achieve local residents’ vision for their neighborhood. Fifth Third’s partner organization in Kentucky is Russell: A Place of Promise.

In a news story on WHAS11 covering the groundbreaking earlier this year, Congressman Morgan McGarvey said the new development will be more than a place to its residents to live.

“If you can have stable housing, you can begin to focus on your healthcare. If you’re not moving your kids around every 8 or 9 months then you can begin to focus on your education. If you have that stable housing, then you can find a job. It is the cornerstone of success,” McGarvey said in the news story.

The Eclipse will be located in an area of the Russell neighborhood where houses had been abandoned or boarded up. The new complex will have 280 units of housing along with a clubhouse, fitness center and other amenities. It also is located three blocks from the first hospital to be built in West Louisville in 150 years. LDG Development has committed to helping residents access educational and apprenticeship program where they can earn and stack credentials in the medical field.

A key part of this work is education and partnership.

One way we do this is through our collaboration with Columbia University’s Climate School and its climate scientists. In fact, we are celebrating our fourth anniversary of our partnership with Columbia this week. One of the fruits of this partnership is the Natural Hazards Index Tool which we launched earlier this year alongside Columbia’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness to better examine physical climate risks across the US. This week, we are launching the Climate Academy 2.0 for our clients, an educational series covering several climate-related topics, including carbon markets, emerging markets and the energy transition, and China’s decarbonization challenges and opportunities.

We recognize that there are also material social risks related to climate change which should be managed. To better understand the intersections of these risks, we collaborated with eCornell, Cornell University’s External Education Unit, on an educational training for our investors that included a session on the elements of a Just Transition. We’re also working on a publication with Walk Free—an international human rights organization—on the financial materiality at the intersection of climate change and human rights. 

We are harnessing our climate knowledge to develop our Climate Transition Assessment and Engagement Framework—a tool designed to allow our investment teams to consistently identify material risks and opportunities for high-impact issuers within our clients’ portfolios and to signal where our investors should focus engagements with these issuers over the long term. The goal is to better understand how our investee companies are preparing their businesses to be successful in a lower-carbon economy.

We are also leveraging our climate knowledge to inform how we act as a business. AB is working to reduce carbon emissions in our operations, in part, by working to locate 85% of our employees in greener workspaces by 2025. Doing so will also encourage collaboration and foster engagement and wellness. As of March 2023, with our London office’s move to a greener building, we have met 60% of our goal, and our New York office move will follow in 2024.

Mondelēz 2022 Snacking Made Right Report

We are focusing on both increasing our energy efficiency and our use of renewable energy across Mondelēz International – so we can aim to go further in reducing our carbon emissions and reducing our costs.

Driving Down Energy-related Emissions 

We are aiming to keep driving our energy-related carbon footprint down in two key ways – making less and better use of energy and increasingly getting our energy from renewable sources.

Improving Energy Efficiency 

We continuously invest in energy management systems and energy efficient technologies in our factories.

Increasing Our Use of Renewable Electricity 

Electricity is one of the largest contributors to our manufacturing footprint and so it is a major focus of our carbon reduction efforts. Indeed, we are aiming to use 100% renewable electricity across Mondelēz International manufacturing sites by 2030. This includes working with governments and suppliers to generate and purchase renewable electricity where we operate.

This transition integrated into the electrification roadmap also can deliver reductions on the consumption of fuels.

In 2022, approximately 39% of the electricity used in our manufacturing sites was renewable, compared to approximately 32% in 2021.

Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan (MENAP) Progress Against End-to-End CO2 e Reduction Goal by 2025 – Renewables 

We signed several agreements across Egypt, Bahrain and Pakistan during 2022 that aim at accelerating the installation of solar. In Pakistan, the hub confectionery plant will become the first MENAP site to commission solar-energy sources. The system is anticipated to be able to contribute to a CO₂e reduction of 79 metric tonnes annually. In Bahrain, we have an agreement to utilize over 4,200 solar panels for both rooftop and carport applications. Once completed, the solar plant is expected to produce 3,820 megawatt-hours of clean energy in the first year of operation, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 2,400 metric tonnes, and potentially allowing us to convert 24% of our energy usage into clean energy. In Egypt, we signed an agreement that will seek to convert 11% of the energy in Borg El Arab (BEA) to clean energy.

Recovering Heat from our Biscuits Ovens 

Our factories in La Haie-Fouassière (France) and East Suzhou (China) implemented heat recovery systems in their biscuits ovens. These initiatives are saving natural gas previously used in the same oven or in other equipment. The reduction in fossil fuel consumption from both initiatives is saving more than 6,000 CO₂e metric tonnes per year.

100% Renewable Energy in Brazil 

The business unit reduced it’s CO₂e footprint while growing in volume.

In Brazil, volume increased, so we needed to review our energy strategy to enable sustainable growth. With the focus of contributing 2025 end-to-end carbon reduction goals, the market invested in a new source of energy in order to produce 100% snacks in its factories using renewable energy. This builds upon progress made by the Brazil business unit in 2021.

Investing in Renewables Around the World 

In 2022, two sites in India and all our plants in Argentina moved to securing 100% of their electricity from renewable sources. Several other operations also made important steps in this journey. Our sites in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, for example, are now consuming now consuming between 20% and 33% of their electricity their electricity from renewable sources. In addition, our Montornes factory in Spain installed solar panels on-site. Combined, these initiatives are delivering reductions of more than 25,500 metric tonnes of CO₂e annually.

Converting from Fossil Fuels to Biogas 

Our factory in China East Suzhou partnered with Huan Yan Environment and Towngas to generate biogas out of our food waste. The project is generating more than 5300GJ of biogas from renewable sources every year, turning waste into energy and reducing CO2 e emissions.

Reducing Emissions in Logistics 

On our journey to our net zero emissions goal in logistics, we focus our efforts across these key areas:

Improving the efficiency of distribution networks by optimizing routes, improving truck and container utilization, adopting intermodal solutions, and reducing traveled distances.Investing in new mobility concepts, including electric and hydrogen trucks.Reducing warehouse emissions at both owned and third-party facilities by converting to renewable energy sources.

Over the last months and in partnership with our carriers and third-party logistics suppliers, we have extended our pilots on electric trucks to a variety of markets, including China, Brazil, and India, with promising results and plans to expand and further explore. The pilot programs have been done on short shuttle lanes and outbound transport to customers nearby the distribution centers, with approximately 30-40% reduced CO2 e emissions compared to diesel trucks.

Signing a Renewable Power Agreement in Poland 

We have signed a virtual power purchase agreement with Golden Peaks Capital for renewable energy in Poland. Some of the new solar plants are starting to generate energy in 2023, while full capacity is expected to be reached in 2024. This project is a major step forward in our footprint decarbonization, as our plants in Poland are substantial contributors to our Scope 2 emissions. At full capacity, we expect to be able to eliminate approximately 85,000 metric tonnes of CO2 e.
