Many students who started high school at the onset of the COVID pandemic, and were forced into remote learning, are now in college. One Texas student says thanks to T-Mobile’s Project 10Million, and the free connectivity its hotspot provided, she was able to reach her fullest potential despite the unexpected challenges of virtual education.

“I just finished the first few days of college and it’s so exciting to know I’ve really begun this journey,” says Coral Almazan, proudly wearing the beanie given to new students at Houston Christian University during orientation. “I’m so fortunate to say that thanks to the hotspot from T-Mobile, I was able to complete high school, and then I completed an associate degree in cybersecurity, and now here I am studying criminal justice at a university. It’s so crazy to think just a few years ago I was home alone with nothing but my laptop and a hotspot to do it!”

As we head into the last months of 2023, it’s becoming obvious that almost four years since COVID forced students into fully remote education, and later for many into a hybrid model, that the students who had just started high school at that time are now starting college. It’s a concept that should give everyone pause. Students who were previously focused on SATs, college decisions and proms were suddenly in 2020 thrust into a completely different high school experience. Many faced barriers that seemed insurmountable to graduating in the same secure standing they expected. Coral, a high school sophomore at the time in Houston was one of those students.

“Just a few years ago I was in the scariest unknowns thanks to COVID,” she says. “But I was ranked 27th out of my entire graduating class, which is an accomplishment for me! I never would’ve thought that I would land so high.”

Coral has been in contact with us for weeks sharing her story as one of the students that received support through T-Mobile’s Project 10Million. The program is a $10.7 billion nationwide initiative aimed at helping to close the digital divide in education by offering free internet connectivity and mobile hotspots to up to 10 million eligible student households.

“I didn’t think I would ever set foot into a physical campus again,” she says. “There were some really uncertain moments but I’m just so grateful and excited for what the future holds now. I’m not just the first one in my family to graduate high school, but to also receive an associate’s college degree and go to a university!”

Parents can sign up their eligible child through Project 10Million, or the program also offers options for qualified schools and school districts, including free and heavily subsidized data plans as well as access to affordable laptops and tablets. By the end of 2022, the company provided $4.8 billion in services and connected more than 5.3 million students across the U.S. through Project 10Million and its other education initiatives.

Coral says when she and the 260 students in her school first received the hotspot, she wasn’t sure exactly what it even was.

“I remember emailing my teachers and saying, ‘Hey, what is this?’,” she says. “And they explained, ‘It’s a hotspot, like the one you already have built into your phone, except it’s free and it’s powerful!’ I didn’t think much of it until the internet we had stopped working. And that’s when I realized I had such an important resource.”

Though school districts scrambled to provide support and got creative with expanding technology access during the pandemic’s onset, reports estimated that between 9 million and 12 million U.S. students still lacked adequate internet access at home for remote learning in 2021. Whether because they had no internet or an unsustainable connectivity option for the amount of work they were doing online, it wasn’t enough. This is exactly the issue Coral says was immediately addressed by her hotspot.

Coral said their spotty home internet service slowed down when she and her three siblings needed to be online working. But with the hotspot, she had a dependable way to connect to the internet.

“The possibilities were endless,” she says. “With the hotspot, we were able to complete our own work on our own time at a pace that we felt comfortable with. It solved a whole bunch of problems in my home.”

Coral says though at first she didn’t understand what a student could do with 100GB of data, she quickly learned it’s enough for so many things like 140 hours of streaming school videos, or 320 hours of online virtual learning, or 5,000 hours of internet research, or 200 hours of online college test prep. And she says the ease at which the hotspot worked was key. The device comes with a quick start guide that walks you through the setup process. Once the hotspot is turned on and connects, the line is activated on the T-Mobile network and the student household is ready to get online, just like a normal Wi-Fi connection.

“Knowing that I’m the first person ever in my entire ancestry to obtain a college associate’s degree, it really struck me that family members before me couldn’t even reach the accomplishments I’ve experienced,” she says. “People in my community, people that I went to high school with, we aren’t the most fortunate kind. It just made me feel really good that we have the ability to still continue to do our work and hopefully in the future more people hear about the hotspot so they can excel. I’m setting a higher expectation, a higher standard within my community, within my family, within myself.”

The ways students learn, both in person and virtually, are still being felt today. It’s why T-Mobile continues its efforts to reach out and invite school districts or parent/guardians to apply. Coral says that the application her school district submitted to qualify, and ultimately was approved for with Project 10Million, changed her and her classmates’ lives forever. She also says she’s proud to be sharing her story during Cybersecurity Awareness Month with a degree in cybersecurity in hand thanks much in part to the connectivity she had from the hotspot that allowed her to continue her education online.

“I believe that the hotspot was a very lucky thing to have within my possession,” she says. “Seeing that even now things are still virtual, that there’s so much less paper and pen, and most everything is done on your computer, it makes me feel a little worried for students because though they might not be going through COVID the same way I did, they could still be struggling with their internet connection. They could still struggle with finding reliable solutions. My hope is that my story makes others aware of this program so students can use the same resources I did and do even better than I did! The hotspot wasn’t just for me. The hotspot wasn’t just for my family. It wasn’t just for my school. Everybody deserves a chance to succeed just as I did.”

Young people in the LGBTQ+ community face significant threats online. Research shows that almost twice as many LGBTQ+ students reported being cyberbullied compared to heterosexual students, which can have negative consequences such as emotional distress, mental health issues, and suicidal thoughts and attempts.

At the same time, the internet can also be a positive environment for LGBTQ+ young people. It can give them the privacy to explore questions about sexual health and coming out, and introduce them to safe, supportive communities of peers and allies.

That’s why Gen has partnered with The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people, to create the Guide to Online Safety for LGBTQ+ Young People. This free digital resource helps queer youth navigate the digital world. A few sample tips from the resource include:

Block Negativity: Familiarize yourself with different forms of harassment like cyberbullying, hate speech and doxing. Report and block harassers when necessary. When you block someone on Instagram, they’re never notified, and they can no longer view your posts or search for your account. (And you can unblock them at any time.)Customize Your Experience: We all have different life experiences and challenges, and LGBTQ+ young people are known to experience depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse or suicidal thoughts at higher rates. Most social media platforms will let you restrict certain content and customize your pages in ways that make you happy.Be Picky About Sharing: If you’re excited to share something but only want a select group of followers to see, adjust your privacy settings to narrow your audience. Many photos contain EXIF data (data that is built into a picture) that includes your location data. Disable this in your device before uploading to a social media platform.Seek Supportive Communities: Join LGBTQ+-focused online communities like TrevorSpace, providing safe spaces for discussion and support. Feeling safe and understood in at least one online space is associated with lower suicide risk and lower rates of recent anxiety for all LGBTQ+ young people.

Launching this resource in October was intentional, as it’s both LGBTQ+ History Month and Cybersecurity Awareness Month. LGBTQ+ History Month provides the opportunity to not only lift up the achievements and contributions of LGBTQ+ people, but to raise awareness of ongoing discrimination and struggles, including suicide and cyberbullying among young people. LGBTQ+ young people need safe, accepting and supportive environments – at home, at school, in their communities and in the digital world. And we are proud to play a role in providing resources that help them navigate the internet more safely.

This initiative with The Trevor Project is one of the many ways Gen provides year-round support to members of the LGBTQ+ community. Meati Foods is the producer of a meat alternative based on nutrient-rich mushroom root. Using novel food processing techniques, Meati Foods can create this protein-rich product with a fraction of the land and water required to grow animal protein, while emitting substantially less greenhouse gas.

To fast-track commercial production of mushroom root – known as mycelium – consistently and efficiently, Meati Foods collaborated with Cybertrol Engineering, a provider of plantwide automation systems and information integration solutions. Cybertrol used Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) technologies in the design.

Meati Food’s new production facility in Thornton, Colorado, includes all processes required to grow, harvest, process, and package the product. The Rockwell-based Cybertrol solution, launched in March 2023, allows for deeper and continuous visibility into the data required to maintain product quality – and optimize water and energy usage within the processes.

“We made conscious decisions early on to use renewable energy to electrify the facility and to implement a large water reuse system,” said Justin Whiteley, CSO and co-founder, Meati Foods. He added, “We knew automation and access to the right data was critical to improving our process – and key to a successful scale-up. Data will provide the information we to need to become even more efficient in the future.”

Effective water management is crucial to our business today and in the future.

The Athabasca watershed has a deep cultural significance for the region’s Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge its spiritual importance to community members and the understanding that the health of the rivers, landscape, wildlife and people are all interconnected. We believe in meaningful engagement that respects the unique and constitutional rights of Indigenous Peoples, including treaty rights and their deep connection with land and water. By continuing to learn about the rights, history, customs, beliefs, traditions and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples, we can apply this knowledge to our water management practices. This journey starts with the understanding that we all share the same aspiration for a healthy ecosystem. Water is an essential part of our operations so it’s important to effectively manage its use across our business. To date, these efforts include minimizing withdrawal of fresh water, recycling water and storing it safely. Even with these practices in place, we face a serious challenge in managing the volume of water currently stored on our mine sites. This includes water used in our extraction and production processes, precipitation and surface runoff that comes into contact with our mines. In addition to our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle water, safely removing and returning treated water from our sites to the watershed is a necessary step to achieving progressive reclamation and mine closure. Working together with Indigenous communities, we will strive to identify solutions to achieve progressive reclamation and our mine closure outcomes and commitments.

Regulatory requirements 
While we regularly submit updates of our reclamation and closure plans to the Alberta Energy Regulator, we are waiting for the federal and provincial governments to finalize the criteria for safely releasing treated water. Returning treated water is a global best practice used by municipal, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors. Governments regulate water releases to protect the receiving waterbodies and downstream users. Other types of Canadian mines – including copper, nickel, iron ore, diamond and gold operations – have regulations to treat and release water used in their processes. The federal government is committed to developing these regulations for the oil sands by 2025. Having these regulations in place will allow us to restore and reconnect ecosystems in areas where we’ve operated. Our systems, combined with strict regulations, will ensure water can be safely released and protect the environment (fish, insects, birds, plants, animals) and downstream users. Once the criteria for releasing treated water are established, we can design treatment plans to meet these objectives. Regulations are key in our efforts to achieve our reclamation and closure plans, which require reducing the amount of water stored on site, avoiding the need to disturb more land for additional water storage and returning the landscape to a self-sustaining ecosystem. We will continue to work with governments, communities and stakeholders to develop the policy and regulatory framework to enable the safe release of treated mine water from our oil sands sites and reduce the need for more tailings facilities. Working together with Indigenous communities, we will work to identify water management solutions that respect their unique constitutional and treaty rights and acknowledge their deep connection with the land and water.

Our approach

A holistic approach to water management is necessary to sustainably develop our oil sands mines and meet our commitments to reclaiming disturbed lands. This approach needs to consider all components of water management, including reducing, recycling, reusing and releasing treated mine water.Water at oil sands mines contains components such as sand, silt, clay, organics, salts, and a range of metals. These constituents are largely common to process water used in other types of mining and many other industrial activities. There is a wide range of proven technologies already in use in Canada and globally to treat process water so that it is safe for release.We have made significant investments in applying, adapting and testing different water management approaches and the effectiveness of various treatment processes and technologies on oil sands mine water to achieve levels safe for release to the environment.Every site is different and requires flexibility when choosing appropriate technologies for treatment. Our solutions for water management will continue to include reuse and recycling and where water release is appropriate, it will be protective of the environment and be considered with the input and knowledge of Indigenous communities.

Monitoring 
Monitoring is critical for measuring the effectiveness of our water management processes. We are required to monitor water quality on our sites and assess ecosystem impacts in the watersheds where we operate. We also participate in the Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) program along with Indigenous communities and government stakeholders to conduct regional monitoring. The OSM program is specifically focused on tracking potential environmental impacts from oil sands facilities. It also assesses potential cumulative environmental effects from oil sands development to help inform future monitoring, mitigation and management decisions.

Water performance

Mining 
While our oil sands mines do not operate in a water-stressed region, our water management practices focus on minimizing Athabasca River water diversion, maximizing the recycling of process-affected water and minimizing the onsite storage of water. We continue to operate well below our annual water licences. Water consumption efficiency at our mining and upgrading facilities is largely affected by design and configuration. Water withdrawal often depends on the amount of annual precipitation. Suncor’s water withdrawal remained relatively consistent in 2022. In 2022, Base Plant decreased both freshwater consumption and intensity by 8% at 12.25 Mm3 and 0.67 m3 /m3 of hydrocarbon production respectfully. This is due to improved water management, along with more accurate tracking systems. Fort Hills’ freshwater consumption decreased by approximately 20% in 2022 to 8.52 Mm3 with an intensity of 0.90 m3 /m3 of hydrocarbon production as less water was required in the operation. At Syncrude, annual freshwater consumption totaled 39.87 Mm3, increasing by 8% due to higher production rates compared to last year. Syncrude had a freshwater consumption intensity of 2.31 m3 /m3 of hydrocarbon production.

In Situ 
For our Firebag and MacKay River in situ sites, water is drawn from recycled wastewater from our oil sands upgrading and utilities operations. We also use surface runoff water collected within the facility boundaries and groundwater wells. In 2022, the average water recycling rate at our in situ sites was approximately 98%, reflecting continued operational efficiencies and further site water optimization.

Refining and logistics 
Our refineries use fresh water for heating and cooling. All refineries have unique requirements and considerations based on the watersheds in which they operate. The refining and logistics freshwater consumption intensity stayed consistent at 0.23 m3 /m3 refined liquid hydrocarbon production. We continue to explore and implement local initiatives that will result in more efficient water use, with less fresh water drawn from local water sources. None of our assets operate in areas of high risk of water stress. However, Suncor’s Commerce City refinery in Colorado operates in a region that is classified as moderate risk, where water supply shortages would require bringing in water by pipeline or truck. We continue to monitor the status of the basin while focusing on implementing industry-leading innovation at our facilities to reduce, reuse and return water.

Exploration and production 
In our East Coast Canada offshore operations, water is either produced offshore through desalination, or is transferred via vessel from St. John’s, N.L. Water data for our Terra Nova Floating, Production and Offloading facility will be reported in 2024.
