Novelis Inc., a leading sustainable aluminum solutions provider and world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, and Southern Company, have announced plans to partner on decarbonization efforts. Their initial focus is on Novelis’ new Bay Minette, Alabama, plant, which aims to be carbon neutral for scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. The recycling and rolling plant is currently under construction to help meet the growing demand for more sustainable beverage packaging and will support the automotive industry in North America, including the increase in electric vehicle production.

Novelis will work with Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power to provide the Bay Minette project with renewable energy to reduce its scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. By participating in Alabama Power’s Renewable Subscription Program, Novelis will directly support the creation of two, new 80-megawatt solar power generation plants in Alabama that will cover over half of the Bay Minette facility’s renewable energy needs while avoiding 192 kilotons of CO2 emissions per year.

Novelis and Southern Company will also collaborate to advance new technologies to reduce Novelis’ Scope 1 carbon emissions, including hydrogen fuels, carbon capture, energy storage and electrification of thermal processes. Through their corporate venture and R&D teams, Novelis and Southern Company are exploring projects for the Bay Minette facility, as well as other Novelis sites in North America.

Selenium, element 34 on the periodic table, is essential for animal cell function—in small amounts. But just like oxygen and and water, a high-enough concentration of selenium can become toxic.

Selenium occurs naturally in coal deposits and sulfide ores, like brassy chalcopyrite and crystalline sphalerite, which are important resources for copper and zinc mining. The mining process creates leftover rock, and water from rain or snowmelt that flows through this rock can carry selenium into nearby waterways. Plankton absorb the element directly into their tissues, and fish that feed on that plankton can potentially get enough selenium in their bodies to cause growth defects. It’s incumbent upon the mining industry, then, to find innovative ways to manage selenium and protect fish populations in the communities where it operates.

Renewable energy needs mining

For generations, the metals and minerals that the mining industry produces have been integral to improving quality of life. And the industry is on the cusp of a staggering increase in demand for materials critical for low-carbon and renewable energy technology.

“What we’re producing are the fundamental building blocks of society,” says Bryan Rairdan, technical director of processing at Teck Resources Limited, which has mining operations in Canada, the United States, Peru, and Chile. “With current technology, if we want to densify cities, we need steel. If you need steel, you need steelmaking coal. If you want to electrify the world, the best way we have to move those electrons around is copper.”

A single wind turbine requires 4.7 tons of copper and 335 tons of steel—and to meet net-zero emissions goals from now until 2050, the world will need as much copper as humanity has mined since 1900. Considering that mining is crucial to building green energy infrastructure, what can the industry do to advance its environmental performance?

Tiny creatures can have a big impact

As it turns out, some bacteria can “eat” selenium—or rather, their carbon metabolism has evolved to convert the element from its dissolved state into a more solid form, which is then easier for humans to keep out of the water cycle.

At its steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, Teck has built “saturated rock fills,” which are large pits of waste rock allowed to fill with groundwater and treated with these special bacteria to reduce selenium levels in the watershed.

Teck’s water treatment facilities, including its saturated rock fills, are working. This treatment is removing between 95% and 99% of the selenium from treated water, and monitoring shows that selenium concentrations downstream of treatment have stabilized and are reducing.

Microbes can make mining itself more environmentally friendly, too. While most copper is obtained through furnace smelting, which contributes to air and water pollution, about 20% of the world’s copper now comes from hydrometallurgy, which uses strong acids and, increasingly, bacteria that can naturally leach the metal.

Bill Burton, principal geological/geotechnical engineer and H3 R&D lead at BGC Engineering, says the potential for microbial applications in mining is exciting. “There’s a goal in the industry for mining to be a temporary use of the land. You have to manage the waste and byproducts that come from the process, and there are many places where microbial biotechnology can help with that.”

For example, Rio Tinto, a mining company operating on six continents, has supported multiple R&D projects to finding biotechnological ways to recover metals from mine-influenced water. And Elizabeth Deyett, senior bioinformatics scientist at Allonnia, explains that some microbes can be used to help dust suppression by binding fine sand particles together, making the air safer to breathe; others can be used to help mining companies extract certain metals they weren’t looking for before, like rare earth elements that are essential to many green technologies, such as energy-efficient light bulbs and hybrid vehicle batteries.

How many other kinds of industry-changing organisms might be lurking beneath our feet? To find out, we must seek genetic data from the earth itself.

The Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform

To discover and implement these organisms, the Canadian government’s Digital Supercluster initiative has formed the cross-industry Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (M-MAP). Teck, BGC Engineering, Rio Tinto, and Allonnia are participating, as well as the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation, Koonkie Canada, Genome BC, and the University of British Columbia.

The partnership’s goal is to extract DNA from 15,000 mine site water, rock, and soil samples, sequence it, and create an online platform for storing and analyzing the data. “M-MAP is trying to get ahead of the curve,” Rairdan explains. “As opposed to saying, ‘We know these organisms do this,’ we’re looking ahead and asking, ‘What organisms are out there and what are they doing?’ We don’t know exactly what we’re going to find, but we know that the data set doesn’t currently exist.”

Koonkie CEO Aria Hahn describes it this way: “At the end of every PhD defense, the classic question is, ‘If you had unlimited resources and time, what would you do?’ M-MAP is essentially a manifestation of those answers. We have the people, the volume of data, the access to resources, and the expertise to solve big problems and make big discoveries.”

Generating and interpreting the data

No one member of M-MAP could accomplish the partnership’s goals alone. Teck and Rio Tinto are providing access to samples from their mine sites around the world, and Illumina systems are generating the raw DNA sequence data from these samples. Burton says that 20 years ago, sequencing of a single soil sample would’ve cost hundreds of thousands of dollars: “Now we’re doing it for hundreds. The technology to do this better wasn’t feasible until the innovation that came out of Illumina. It’s opening the door to a whole new world for us.”

For this project, Illumina is using both amplicon sequencing, which targets short fragments of DNA, and metagenomics, which analyzes the entire community of microbes in a sample. The sequencing has just begun, but it’s already proven revelatory. “Of the first 100 whole genomes we’ve been able to capture from mine sites, about 80 percent of them have been novel,” Hahn says. “So we’re looking at a lot of discovery here.”

The bioinformaticians of Koonkie take the raw sequence data and turn it into something usable. “We’re responsible for taking those As, Ts, Gs, and Cs and asking, ‘Who’s there? Who’s doing what?’” Hahn says. Their proprietary statistical software finds the meaningful signals among the noise and annotates them, hanging spotlights on the genes, both documented and novel, that seem like the best targets for genetic engineering and synthetic biology development.

Building better bacteria

In some cases, M-MAP may find organisms that are already perfectly suited for a job in the mines. One of Allonnia’s previous discoveries was a naturally occurring bacteria that processes 1,4-dioxane (a cosmetics industry byproduct that contaminates groundwater) into mere CO2 and H2O.

In other cases, nature might need a little help getting ready for the workforce—for example, a gene that’s useful for processing toxic waste might be found in a microbe that’s harmful to humans. That’s when Allonnia can wield the awesome power of genetic engineering to extract the beneficial gene and transport it into a different microbe that’s known to be harmless.

“There are ways to put selective pressure on organisms so it’s beneficial to them to keep that gene,” Deyett summarizes; “they’ll keep it and pass it on to future generations.” Et voilà, a new living tool is born. “When a lot of people think of the microbiome, they think of human health. But I think there’s actually a lot more potential for microbes to help us in environmental settings.”

Leaving no trace

Once the mining is done and its byproducts processed, there’s one last vital step to reducing the industry’s environmental impact: remediating closed mines. As principal advisor for mine closure R&D at Rio Tinto, this is Nick Gurieff’s specialty.

“In Australia, the US, and Canada, there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of abandoned mine sites of all different sizes,” he says. “They’ve been there for many years, and they’re still polluting the local water and townships around them. Rio Tinto takes very seriously our responsibility to ensure that every one of our closed or legacy sites is rehabilitated to a standard that we’re happy with and—more importantly—the local communities are happy with.”

Contemporary mining companies are sensitive to the resistance their industry faces among the communities who are directly impacted—they know they must ensure that the land is suitable for use by future generations. Rio Tinto’s remediation process takes into account everything needed to restore the land: starting from demolition and removal of old structures and equipment, to remediating any waste, to replenishing the site’s native plant species and fertile topsoil.

“Topsoil remediation is one of the biggest challenges we have,” Gurieff admits. Soil microbiome is highly particular to its region of origin, and fully restoring it means knowing what was there in the first place. “We really need to understand what microbes are doing what. How can we enrich for certain microbes? How can we support our R&D project partners by giving them access to the unique microbes we have at our sites? All the information we get through M-MAP plays an important role in understanding how we could be doing more with what we have.”

Good stewards of the earth, both large and small

Our relationship with the microcosmos is undergoing a paradigm shift as great as when we first discovered it in the 17th century. We spent 300 years believing microbes were either ubiquitous but harmless stowaways or disease agents to be eradicated at all costs. Now we’re finally starting to explore the ways these tiny-but-mighty creatures could help us tackle some of our biggest challenges.

“It’s really easy to focus on the world we can see,” Deyett says. “But the more I learned about microbes, the more I learned that this is their planet. They’re responsible for its maintenance and health. They were here long before us and they’ll be here long after us, so to understand them is to understand what has given life to everything we see.”

“We became little Chernobyl.”

That’s how residents in the small community of East Palestine, Ohio felt following the February 2023 freight train derailment that spewed hazardous chemicals into the air. The derailment impacted all aspects of life in East Palestine, including school sports.

The weekend after the derailment, the East Palestine School District was scheduled to host a playoff game for its girls’ high school basketball team, but the opposing team decided to forfeit instead of travel to East Palestine.

“We got tagged as Toxic Town U.S.A.,” said Dwayne Pavkovich, assistant principal and athletic director at East Palestine High School. “People didn’t want to come here.”

The ongoing concerns about air quality and water safety doomed spring sporting events. East Palestine’s annual track invitationals had a 50% drop in participation; all volleyball, basketball and wrestling tournaments were canceled. The lost revenue from ticket sales, concessions and 50/50 raffles put the athletic department’s budget down $70,000.

Pavkovich knew if the school couldn’t find a way to come up with the money, some sports teams would not be able to play in the 2023-2024 school year. He reached out to DICK’S Sporting Goods for help. Pavkovich said he was hoping for $10,000, but Community Marketing Manager Jim Famularo knew their need was greater.

“There was a chance these student athletes would have another sports season canceled due to something far out of their control,” said Famularo. “We saw an opportunity to support these kids and make sure they could play.”

“The student athletes and coaches of East Palestine were resilient and determined to not be victims of the catastrophe that happened in their backyard,” said Director of Sports Matter and Community Relations Kristen Garmey. “The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation wanted to help these athletes thrive.”

During a school pep assembly on Sept. 15, the East Palestine Athletic Department was presented with a 75for75 Sports Matter Grant.

“You guys stepped up for our kids,” Pavkovich said.

The $75,000 helped ensure all of East Palestine’s fall sports went on as normal, something Pavkovich said is vital for the entire community.

“Sports is a fundamental part of East Palestine’s DNA,” Pavkovich said. “We’re gaining momentum and things are going in the right direction again.”

The BAA program began in 2021 as part of U.S. Bank Access Commitment®, a long-term framework with multiple initiatives, including Business Access, focused on building wealth and helping to close the racial wealth gap. BAAs are responsible for addressing the three most prominent gaps that limit business growth and employment opportunities: information, connections and capital.

Scott emigrated from Peru to the U.S. in 2007 and eventually began an unexpected career in banking. Working her way up as a Small Business Specialist with U.S. Bank, Scott quickly jumped on the opportunity to explore an expanded role as a BAA and conduit to local Hispanic businesses in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“I know the struggles that Hispanic business owners face, and I want to be a part of the solution for them,” Scott said. “I can now commit myself to an underserved market that largely doesn’t have access to the right resources, and that starts with financial education. The clients I work with know how to run their businesses, building on a foundation of hard work. But it’s things like building credit and cash flow that unfortunately get skipped over, and that’s where I step in.”

A common issue with Hispanic business owners is a lack of trust with the banking system, which is something Scott herself experienced upon moving to the U.S. The solution can be as simple as financial literacy, and providing that information in someone’s native tongue, she said.

“I am able to share my own story about my journey to the U.S., how I learned the basics of banking and how to start, run and grow a business. Those shared experiences build trust which allows me to serve my customers more effectively.”

Scott is involved with the Colorado Springs Hispanic Chamber, where she can further engrain herself with the Hispanic business community and find new avenues to reach potential clients. Participating in and leading workshops at businesses that reach the same audience builds the trust that so many business owners struggle with, she said. And when it comes to the most important quality needed to build that trust, Scott’s approach is simple: Listen.

“It’s critical for my peers, partners and team members to be active listeners, regardless of the background of the client in front of you,” Scott said. “You don’t have to completely understand their culture, but you can listen. If a customer feels that you listened to them, trust me, they are loyal to you forever.”

Recently, U.S. Bank launched Asistente Inteligente, the first-ever Spanish-speaking voice assistant for banking. The landlocked country of Malawi, located in southeastern Africa, is home to rich, arable land and a subtropical climate suitable for farming. As a result, over 80% of the population is employed in agriculture, and their livelihood revolves around alternating rainy and dry seasons that dictate how the year’s planting, growing and harvesting will unfold. But the once predictable seasons that smallholder farmers rely on are steadily shifting due to climate change.

When the rainy season arrives later than expected, many Malawian farmers still follow outdated agronomy practices that may lead them to plant too early or too late. Smallholder farmers lack access to hyperlocal weather forecasting and data that can help increase their crops’ chances of success, which jeopardizes the productivity and profitability of their season. Their challenges are compounded further by inherent and unavoidable farming risks, such as pests, contamination and natural disasters.

But with access to advanced technology, smart farming recommendations and specialized weather forecasts, farmers can build resilient and flexible operations that can help maximize their fields’ productive potential. That’s why IBM® and global nonprofit Heifer International collaborated through the IBM Sustainability Accelerator to develop OpenHarvest—a digital tool to empower Malawi’s smallholder farmers through technology and a community ecosystem.

OpenHarvest sets out to close a digital divide

OpenHarvest is an open source platform with a mobile application that expands access to visual agricultural data, delivers specialized recommendations to farmers through AI and climate modeling, and enables better farm and field management.

The OpenHarvest model assigns each participating farmer’s field a set of latitude-longitude points that trigger comprehensive recommendations according to local weather and crop growth stages. Additionally, it monitors soil composition data (nitrogen, phosphorous and other nutrient levels) to identify how fertilizers should be applied.

From the beginning, Heifer International and IBM sought to develop a low-cost tool that maximizes output. A serverless architecture was ideal to keep infrastructure costs to a minimum under a “pay-per-use” model. IBM Cloud Code Engine allowed IBM developers to reduce time to deployment and focus on core objectives for Heifer International and the farms at the heart of the project—namely, being cost-effective, scalable and reliable.

Historically, Malawian farmers have relied on generalized weather information transmitted via radio to make operational decisions. Most farmers do not own smartphones, so Heifer International and IBM had to find an information-sharing method that could transmit precise crop and soil management recommendations generated by the OpenHarvest model, while remaining accessible and affordable to the end user. The solution was an SMS text message.

IBM Consulting also brought their sustainability experience to the pilot deployment of the OpenHarvest solution, joining a project ecosystem that included Heifer International’s community facilitators, volunteers from a local university in Malawi and smallholder farmers. It was crucial to support farmers not only with smart technology, but with a network of hands-on experts to help build trust and implement solutions.

Creating a profitable future

Climate change is not the only risk that smallholder farmers encounter in Malawi. Though the economy relies on agriculture, farmers have limited access to affordable credit or competitive markets. The cycle of poverty and lack of access to capital have historically pushed farmers in Malawi to purchase cheaper supplies (like recycled seed) which can result in low yields and subpar crops. For this reason, access to affordable capital can be an essential component to promote environmentally resilient practices and drive behavioral change.

IBM and Heifer International saw an opportunity to incentivize farmers to adopt best agricultural practices through a digital extension solution, while simultaneously facilitating connections to access finance and the formal market. Ultimately, the OpenHarvest platform is differentiated by this structure, which encourages farmers to embrace digital technology and retain new farming practices. This leads to long-term profitability and success in a changing environment and economy.

Expanding deployment for greater impact

OpenHarvest has now reached 200 users in the district of Mchinji in western Malawi. The application’s impact translates to about 1,000 direct beneficiaries, as Malawi has an average family size of about 5 people. The pilot deployment has now concluded with the sale of the year’s crops. Compared to previous years, most farmers saw increased yields, with some participants even doubling or tripling their output for the season.

As a next step, Heifer International plans to onboard around 300 additional farmers and expand the project into Kasungu, a district in the central region of Malawi. Looking ahead, the program is also evaluating other innovations, such as building out robust AI models and AI integrations based on a roadmap developed with IBM.

Oceans have continuously regulated our climate in ways beyond our control, from absorbing and storing large amounts of heat that impact weather patterns and water circulation to mitigating dynamic aspects of climate change through various channels. This intersects and impacts our ocean’s ecosystem.

Ocean Exchange, a non-profit organization that accelerates innovation for the blue economy, has continuously supported startups that have direct interests and impacts on our ocean’s ecosystem. Ocean Exchange provides support by re-distributing corporate and family philanthropy to vetted startups via a competitive process. Additionally, Ocean Exchange provides help with network introductions to partners and investors who can help advance the adoption of innovative ocean/climate solutions. Examples of startups that were part of the Ocean Exchange competition include Water Warriors, Ebb Carbon, Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI), Element Resources, Twelve, Coral Vita, and 340 others over its 12-year history.
