Marathon Petroleum’s inaugural Catching for a Cause fishing event raised $80,000 for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. The food bank’s executive director said this donation will allow them to purchase enough food for those in need during the last three months of the year.Sponsors participated in a two-day fishing trip that included networking and fishing for silver salmon and sockeye salmon on the Big River Lakes and the Kenai River.

Marathon Petroleum’s Kenai refinery in Alaska held a two-day fishing fundraiser that netted more than $80,000 for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank (KPFB), and leaders from the nonprofit organization say it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Since the pandemic, KPFB has been pushed to our limits. We went from averaging 900,000 pounds of food distributed annually to over 2.2 million,” said Greg Meyer, Executive Director at KPFB. “We are also feeding two to three times the number of folks in our soup kitchen.”

Meyer’s shared that the increased number of people in need and the increase cost of food and supplies has put a strain on what they are able to do for the community. This donation will allow them to purchase food for the last three months of the year, something they didn’t think was going to be possible.

This donation will allow them to purchase food for the last three months of the year, something they didn’t think was going to be possible.

“Marathon is so important to the work of the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank,” said Meyer. “They enable our neighbors to have turkeys every year during the holidays, and they are a key sponsor of our annual Soup Supper Fundraiser.”

Marathon Petroleum employees and staff from KPFB worked together to make the Catching for a Cause event a success. Industry contractors who work with the refinery signed up as sponsors. Participants spent two days networking and fishing for silver salmon and sockeye salmon. On the first day of the event, guests took a float plane for a fly-out fishing trip at Big River Lakes. Guests fished on the Kenai River the second day.

“The event exceeded all expectations,” said Casey Sullivan, Government Affairs Manager for Marathon Petroleum at the Kenai refinery. “This event was an immediate hit with our guests from many southern states that said this was the most unique and amazing fundraising event they’ve attended.”

Organizers were thrilled that they could build business relationships while supporting the local community in Kenai.

“On the last night of the event, staff from KPFB spoke to the group about how the donation would help the community,” said Jon Kruger, Turnaround Lead at the Kenai refinery, who helped organize the event. “I am proud of our team that put this together, and this event really made me proud to be part of the Kenai refinery community. There are some people in need in our community that will have their lives enriched by the money raised during this event.”

October 27, 2023 /3BL/ – Ceres celebrated the Michigan Senate passage of ambitious clean energy legislation and called on the Michigan House to promptly take up and pass the legislation that is highlighted by a 100% clean electricity standard in 2035.

“As a manufacturing powerhouse and a leading destination for clean energy investment, Michigan is ideally positioned to benefit from clean energy legislation that creates jobs, reduces costs, improves public health, and cuts pollution. But it will take ambitious state policy to fully capitalize on this opportunity,” said Alli Gold Roberts, senior director of state policy, Ceres. “Companies and investors support 100% clean electricity because they know it will secure the state’s economic and energy future. We urge the state legislature to finalize this crucial legislation as soon as possible.”

Ceres has been working with companies and investors to support Michigan’s clean energy legislation throughout the ongoing legislative session. In September, 15 businesses signed a letter to lawmakers and Gov. Grethen Whitmer declaring their support for an accelerated transition to 100% clean electricity that prioritizes jobs, equity, and affordability, and that helps Michigan maximize recent federal climate and clean energy investments.

“Passing legislation to achieve 100% clean energy while prioritizing affordability, equity, and job creation is an important step toward building a more just net zero economy that will enhance the vitality, competitiveness, and growth of our state,” the letter said. It was signed by Bell’s Brewery, Brewery Vivant, Broad Leaf Brewery + Spirits, CleanCapital, Crystal Mountain Resort, IKEA US, New Belgium Brewing, Nexamp, REI, Sealed, Siemens, Trane Technologies, Uplight, Walker-Miller Energy Services, and Worthen Industries.

The legislation that passed the Michigan Senate would codify into law many aspects of Gov. Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan, which was released in 2022 and was also welcomed by Michigan businesses as an important tool to guide climate, public health, and economic development policy in the state.

Companies increasingly support clean energy policies not only to reduce climate pollution that threatens their operations, but because they bring significant business and economic benefits. According to a recent analysis conducted by 5 Lakes Energy and the MI Energy Innovation Business Council, the legislation would create nearly 160,000 jobs, increase Michigan’s GDP 2.5% by 2050, and save households $145 in energy costs annually by 2035.

About three or four times a month, Brittany Goettlich would see a case from a Native American tribal resident cross her desk that had been declined or flagged for fraud because the applicant didn’t have a validated physical address.

As a fraud operations analyst for U.S. Bank, Goettlich’s job is to review newly opened accounts, verifying customers’ identities and ensuring that the bank follows federal regulations requiring thorough review of applications. One of those verification requirements is an authenticated primary physical address.

Goettlich, who is a descendant member of the Little Shell Band of Chippewa Indians in Montana and has several relatives who live on tribal lands, knew that some Native American reservations in the U.S. don’t have validated physical addresses for residents. It was easy for her to recognize the issue, but other fraud operations analysts reviewing cases may not have the same knowledge. Goettlich worked to research and advocate for a procedure change that created a solution specifically for people who live on reservations.

“I don’t think many people are aware that tribal reservations don’t always have physical addresses, and often residents use the workarounds,” Goettlich said. In her research to create the proposed new policy, she called Bureau of Indian Affairs offices around the country to verify that this was, in fact, the case, and combed through litigation brought by Native American groups in North and South Dakota over voter ID laws and physical address requirements.

Goettlich presented her proposal to her manager, who supported her efforts and connected her with other experts in the bank who could collaborate with her to ensure the new solution complies with federal laws and meets customers’ needs. The new procedure, which was implemented earlier this year, allows Indigenous customers to open accounts at U.S. Bank using other information while still protecting customers and the bank.

The change “created a much better customer experience,” said Katie Seitz, fraud risk manager and Goettlich’s manager. “Brittany’s advocacy for this solution speaks mountains about her approach to help customers. She’s consistently going above and beyond to help the customers.”

Goettlich shared the news about her successful work on the procedure change with her mom and grandma, who used to live on the Fort Peck reservation in Montana. They remembered what an issue it was when they lived there.

In addition to her role on the Operations Fraud team, Goettlich has served on the global board for the U.S. Bank Indigenous Peoples Business Resource Group for the past three years. “It is a role that has given me a greater sense of fulfillment to share and celebrate my culture while I’m at work.

“There’s not a ton of opportunities to do that, especially in corporate America,” she said. “To be able to not only do that but be told by managers they like what I’m doing and encourage me to do it more – I love that.”

Supporting the company’s intent to be a leader in sustainability, Southwire has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Program.

ENERGY STAR® is a well-recognized and respected voluntary program managed by the U.S. EPA, supported by U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and Natural Resources Canada, that is focused on improving energy efficiency in buildings, plants and homes.

“We’re excited to partner with ENERGY STAR, a brand that is well-recognized for energy efficiency in many of the things we use every day, like some of our Topaz® lights,” said Norman Adkins, Southwire’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). “Through its resources and collaboration with other companies who share the same commitment to proving energy efficiency, ENERGY STAR helps its partners in the industrial space. As a part of this partnership, we plan to improve energy efficiency at a faster pace throughout our company operations.”

In support of the company’s Growing Green initiative, Southwire aims to reduce its environmental footprint and maintains a deep commitment to responsible growth and actively integrating environmental priorities into its core operations.

In July 2020, Southwire announced its Carbon Zero goal to eliminate or offset all of the company’s Scope 1 – associated with fuel combustion – and Scope 2 – associated with electricity consumption – greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

As part of the program, Southwire will continue its commitment to protect the environment through the continuous improvement of its energy performance.

“At Southwire, our vision is to make our company sustainable for the next 100 years and beyond, and our partnership with ENERGY STAR is a testament to those efforts,” said Burt Fealing, Executive Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer. “Southwire maintains a deep commitment to responsible growth and actively integrating environmental priorities into our core operations, and we look forward to creating a more sustainable planet through our partnership with ENERGY STAR.”

“By making a commitment to improved energy efficiency, Southwire is on the way to enhancing its bottom line while protecting our environment,” said Cindy Jacobs, Chief of EPA’s ENERGY STAR Commercial and Industrial Branch.
