BOSTON, October 31, 2023 /3BL/ – Sappi North America, Inc., a leading producer and supplier of diversified paper, packaging products and pulp, today announces it has won two awards for its innovative recruitment efforts and strategy. Sappi’s Somerset Mill video won Silver in the Branded Content-Recruitment category of the 2023 W3 Awards, and its Choose Your Path Series earned Silver in the NYX Video Awards’ Series or Campaign: Recruitment category.

“Across the industry, we’re all feeling the constraints of the aging workforce and adapting strategies to attract the interest of the next generation of employees,” said Patti Groh, Director of Communications, Sappi North America. “We’ve found Millennials and Gen Z employees care about how their employer tackles environmental challenges, and the Somerset Mill video and Choose Your Path Series have helped us to communicate with these generations about what Sappi truly stands for and how sustainability drives everything we do, which has enabled us to better recruit within these demographics.”

Created in collaboration with VSA Partners (VSA) and Mayday Productions, the Somerset Mill video highlights the impact prospective employees can make at Sappi, and how current employees play a vital role in driving world-class sustainability initiatives, research and development work with cutting-edge technology that has a global impact. The video was recognized by W3 for its ability to connect with the next generation of workers while showcasing the breadth of opportunities in forestry, manufacturing, engineering and R&D.

Additionally, the Choose Your Path Series, supported by VSA, are career-specific videos used for recruiting positions for R&D, forestry, sales and engineering. Spurred by industry-wide challenges of a maturing workforce, difficulties recruiting and hiring younger employees due to lack of awareness and industry misconceptions, as well as retaining top talent in remote areas, these videos help address recruitment challenges by featuring employees in various departments and positions sharing their first-hand accounts of their experience at Sappi. The company captured what working for an innovative and forward-thinking company truly means.

The Somerset Mill and Choose Your Path Series videos not only convey that being leaders in sustainability is rewarding in professional growth, but also successfully dispels outdated perceptions of the paper industry to demonstrate that Sappi offers a dynamic and thriving workplace where talented people are welcomed and empowered.

The NYX Awards is a prestigious international competition that recognizes and honors individuals, agencies and organizations that demonstrate extraordinary caliber in marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, video and more. The W3 Awards also celebrates digital excellence by honoring outstanding websites, marketing, video, mobile sites and apps, social and podcasts created by some of the best interactive agencies, designers and creators worldwide.

When we can broaden consumer—and even brand—understanding of how various packaging formats navigate the supply chain and shed light into their unique lifecycles, we can make strides toward increased recycling and decreased waste. Still, it takes collective, concerted effort from the industry as a whole to begin to shift the mindset of even one demographic. With this in mind, we have invested in several opportunities for collaboration with various peers in our value chain.

From primary material and can sheet producers to consumer brands, and from recycling facilities to industry organizations, we are joining forces with others to chip away at larger goals around recycling.

In 2022, we became greater advocates for this mission through the following efforts:

Aerosol Recycling Initiative

Reinforcing the sustainable attributes of steel cans and recognizing the work required to ensure aerosol cans are recaptured for future use, CMI and the Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) launched an Aerosol Recycling Initiative. Built around two 2030 goals of reaching an 85% recycling access rate for all aerosol cans and labeling at least 90% of aerosols with recycling instructions, the initiative gained support from almost 20 companies across the aerosol value chain. We will continue to support CMI and the HCPA in their efforts by encouraging more on-pack messaging with brand partners and more sustainable post-consumption habits with their customers.

Canned Good Coalition Pilot Activations

Through our membership and active role in CMI, we supported the association’s new Canned Good Coalition program that aims to build preference for the steel food can by educating consumers about the eco-friendly benefits of the format. Pilot activations at Harris Teeter and H-E-B that utilized messaging about canned food benefits for waste reduction and recyclability yielded an almost 37% increase in sales during a two-week span versus the same two weeks the prior year, along with an even bigger uptick in online sales, demonstrating the power of the industry working together to eliminate misinformation and reeducate consumers about the products they shop for every day.

Every Can Counts International Recycling Tour with Metal Packaging Europe and Abralatas

The second Every Can Counts (ECC) International Recycling Tour traveled across Europe to promote metal’s infinite recyclability. A partnership we maintain in both Europe (through Metal Packaging Europe (MPE)) and Brazil (through Abralatas, the Brazilian Association of Aluminium Can Manufacturers), our work with ECC aims to support greater recycling rates in the regions and maps back to the Optimum Circularity pillar of our Twentyby30TM program and our updated recycling goals.

These efforts from ECC continue to push the potential for greater recycling rates in areas that already reflect strong consumer buy-in, underscoring the fact that a single beverage can makes a meaningful environmental impact. This movement also supports the joint roadmap set by MPE and European Aluminium to move toward achieving 100% aluminum beverage can recycling in Europe by 2030. The strategy aims to build on the region’s already impressive beverage can recycling rate of nearly 80% to align with the European Commission’s new EU Circular Economy Action Plan 2.0 and its direction for the packaging sector.

Beyond these recent examples, we continue to support several industry associations in the regions in which we operate. A complete list of groups where we maintain membership or an active role can be found on our website.

Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit

More than 100 participants throughout the entire value chain attended the inaugural Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit in Rome, Italy. The event provided an industry-first opportunity to centralize important, hands-on discussions between diverse perspectives in the aluminum beverage can value chain. Primary material suppliers, can sheet suppliers, packaging manufacturers, beverage can and aluminum organizations, research organizations and beverage brands were able to communicate on topics like the path to industry decarbonization and where various players can improve consumer education on recycling and access to recycling. Attendees also committed to work toward common parameters for recycled content measurement in beverage cans. The Summit, which we co-hosted in partnership with CMI, Ardagh Metal Packaging and the International Aluminium Institute, will serve as a dedicated forum for continued progress on a regular basis.

Alibaba Cloud said it is joining forces with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) to drive sustainability in international baseball competitions.

Its AI-driven sustainability platform Energy Expert will help WBSC, the international governing body for baseball and softball, to enhance the operations of events, including increasing the use of diverse types of renewable energy and minimizing power consumption during venue construction in the game’s preparation phase.

The WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup earlier this month is the first event from WBSC to adopt the initiatives.

“We are proud to partner with such an innovative and dynamic company such as Alibaba Cloud to help us achieve our objectives in the area of sustainability to ensure our forever increasing global fanbase will continue to enjoy our beautiful game all around the world,” said Marco Ienna, WBSC Chief Operating Office in a release.

The WBSC tapped the sustainability platform to calculate the carbon footprint generated from sources including venue operation, temporary structure materials, accommodation and catering, participants’ business flights and local commute, as well as the transportation of sports materials and equipment.

Before I came to Gilead, I knew it as a company that produces innovative therapies across HIV, liver disease and cancer. Now I know it’s so much more. Its focus goes well beyond medicine – and at its heart, Gilead is a company that lives and breathes a commitment to health equity.

Over the years, Gilead has thoughtfully and boldly focused on communities with the greatest unmet needs, and women and girls – in particular, Black women and girls – are always at the top of the list. Being both a Black woman and the General Counsel at a biopharmaceutical company, I’m all too familiar with the statistics showing that we’re disproportionally affected by disease, and supporting and advocating for Black women and girls is a cause that’s deeply personal to me.

This was top of mind for me last week as I joined hundreds of passionate and talented individuals at the U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA), the largest HIV-related gathering in the United States. This year’s theme was “A Love Letter to Black Women” – both a beautiful sentiment and an assurance that the focus would be on a community that’s disproportionally impacted by HIV. Recent figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that Black women account for 54% of new HIV diagnoses among women aged 16 and older, though we comprise only 14% of the population. And yet we’ve consistently been underrepresented in HIV clinical trials due to barriers like stigma, medical distrust and limited access to trial study sites.

Despite this reality, Black women and girls don’t often talk about HIV or believe it’s relevant to us. That’s why I was heartened to see so many women tackling this topic at USCHA and having important discussions about the social, political, educational and environmental barriers that negatively affect our community.

The conference also put a spotlight on the many creative ways to help meet unmet needs in HIV prevention, education and care, and it reaffirmed my support of Gilead’s long practice of partnering with organizations around the world that do such work. As committed as we are to helping communities affected by HIV and playing a key role in ending the epidemic, we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why Gilead has worked for decades with public health organizations, community advocates and policymakers that aim to expand health equity and address barriers to care and wellbeing.

In 2022, we were named the #1 global philanthropic funder of HIV causes, and we also continue to meaningfully invest in Black women’s health and leadership. Since 2017, we’ve provided more than $35 million in philanthropic support for Black women-led and Black women-serving organizations in the United States. And in June, we were proud to establish the Setting the P.A.C.E. initiative, a three-year, $10 million commitment to increase HIV prevention, health equity and anti-stigma efforts for both cisgender and Transgender Black women and girls.

Gilead is also committed to “overrepresenting” underrepresented individuals throughout our HIV clinical trial research. In 2021, we launched our PURPOSE trials to investigate the use of therapies to help reduce individuals’ chances of acquiring HIV. Our PURPOSE 1 trial, which is being conducted in South Africa and Uganda, specifically focuses on adolescent girls and young women and is the first Phase III HIV trial to include pregnant and lactating women and people.

I’m proud to work at an organization that has a commitment to advancing health equity for all people, and it was inspiring to meet and learn from so many like-minded folks at USCHA. It was powerful and emotional to see people from all sectors of healthcare coming together to embrace the needs of Black women and girls – and I personally felt like the “love letter” was addressed to every one of us.

My grandmother used to repeat a famous saying about how when you know better, you do better – and I’m confident the conversations and insights gained at the conference will go a long way toward us all doing better and building a better future. It’s clear the time is right to invest in Black women’s health and end the HIV epidemic for everyone, everywhere.

Deborah Telman is Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel at Gilead.

Q1: Why is the issue of sustainability so important to Sofidel?

Q1 Response: Sofidel’s growth strategy aligns with the United Nations 2030 Agenda which includes building an inclusive, resilient and sustainable future for people and the planet. Sofidel has adopted 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals including good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life on land and partnerships for the goals. Each of these goals focuses on creating a healthier and cleaner environment that betters the well-being of humans and the planet.

Q2: How has this focus changed how the company develops new products?

Q2 Response: By aligning our company with the UN and its sustainability agenda, this helps make significant strides toward our commitment of prioritizing sustainability when developing new products. This includes a high level of research and cooperation with existing and new suppliers. There are many opportunities to design and manufacture sustainable products, which is why Sofidel is always looking for innovative solutions throughout production to how we distribute goods to consumers.

Q3: What are some of the cutting-edge new items that have been brought to market by Sofidel in recent years?

Q3 Response: Sofidel is the first company in the U.S. to introduce paper packaging in substitution of plastic packaging for a variety of our products. Our company has set a goal of achieving a 50% reduction in the use of conventional plastic in its production by 2030. Alternative packaging, like PCR (post-consumer recycled materials), repurposes plastic that has already been used instead of utilizing virgin plastic. Another example is our award-winning Papernet Dispenser HytechSeas, which is made with recovered plastic materials from the ocean. We know how important water is for the planet’s survival, which is why our company considerately manages water resources and ensures production processes are constantly monitored to optimize water use.

Q4: What makes the products offered by Sofidel sustainable?

Q4 Response: The paper production process is known for consuming substantial amounts of energy. Because of this, we make sure we produce our products in a sustainable manner. Our company has made a commitment to greatly reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by investing twelve years in cogeneration plants and energy production from renewable sources. Our goal is to provide consumers with high-quality sustainable products that work effectively long-term. One hundred percent of the pulp used in the production process is certified by independent third parties with forest certification schemes (FSC, FSC Controlled Wood and PEFC). Also, Sofidel adopted and invited suppliers to adopt a voluntary disclosure program (The Ten P) to identify, measure and mitigate impacts. Sofidel equipment is state of the art, which guarantees the lowest use of water in the industry.

Q5: What have been some of the bigger challenges Sofidel has faced related to sustainability and the products offered by the company? How has the company solved these challenges?

Q5 Response: Our biggest challenge has not been internal, but external. Sustainability is the heart of our mission and our products, however, both distributors and consumers are not necessarily always interested in paying more for sustainable paper products. Another challenge is finding the most sustainable solution. For example, not all repurposed paper is more sustainable than virgin paper.

Q6: How are the sustainable elements of the products communicated to consumers?

Q6 Response: Sofidel is a B2B company. We sell to distributors that are then selling to consumers of businesses. Sometimes, our message can get diluted in the chain, and for this reason Sofidel recently engaged in a more direct communication to stakeholders through increased social media engagement and corporate events (beach clean ups, sponsorships, etc.). It is a long journey and there are a lot of brands that greenwash their consumers, but we are determined to educate the market and consumer on being able to differentiate what is authentically sustainable and what is not.

Q7: Have there been changes to the company’s supply chain to make the transportation of products less impactful on the environment?

Q7 Response: Yes! Sofidel is one of the few companies, if not the only company in the U.S. with a very efficient distribution process. We have six plants across the country ( Ohio, Oklahoma, Nevada, Florida, Mississippi and Wisconsin). The plants are located in proximity to market consumption (population). When deciding where to put the next factory, Sofidel always looks at where consumption is and tends to stay close to it, reducing unnecessary additional “miles” to deliveries. Currently, the radius of reach of our plants is very optimal, which makes Sofidel an ideal partner for distributors to reduce their national carbon footprint. Additionally, Sofidel is consistently proposing new solutions to optimize transportation time as much as possible.

Q8: What new products are in the pipeline for 2023?

Q8 Response: We are currently looking to expand our paper packaging by offering solutions that are equivalent of national brands in all categories, especially in medium high qualities.

Q9: What about engagement?

Q9 Response: We are committed to promoting sustainability practices in the industry where we operate. For this reason, we are a part of the ISSA Sustainability Committee and the ANA Sustainability Committee. We are also part of the ISSA Sustainability Leadership Council.

WorldFoodDay commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It’s a day when we raise awareness about hunger and food insecurity. Kim Frankovich, Global Vice President of Sustainability for Griffith Foods and Bhagyalakshmi Ganapathy, Sustainability Manager for Griffith Foods India, recently visited the Bangalore FoodBank in Bangalore, India to get a first-hand look at the efforts to combat hunger and ensure food security.

The team visited a community which empowers self-help women groups, and distributed food kits as a part of their relief program to enable women in providing nutritious meals. They also spent time at a charity run school and shelter home, that features a school kitchen garden where children are encouraged to plant, grow, nurture and harvest fresh produce. Their visit also included a migrant community neighborhood, where as a part of the Food Rescue program, packaged food products are redistributed to communities in need. Griffith Foods is proud to partner with Bangalore Food Bank on World Food Day and every day to advance its vision of eradicating hunger, malnutrition and preventing food waste.
