The KeyBank Foundation has awarded Stark State and ArtsInStark with grant funds to further their missions of bettering the Canton community and surrounding area.

Stark State received $35,000 to fund 50 $500 scholarships for students residing in Stark and Summit Counties who are seeking financial support and enrolled in a certificate or degree program at Stark State.

Currently, more than 230 high quality associate degrees and certificate options are available for in-demand careers in business, education, engineering, health and public services, information technology, liberal arts, CDL, welding, mathematics and sciences. All students receiving scholarships will be residents of Stark or Summit counties, with the majority of these students coming from underserved communities with a preference given to low-to-moderate income families.

Key has supported Stark State with $135,000 in grant funding since 2015.

“At KeyBank we believe everyone should have access to higher education – regardless of their financial situation,” said Mattie Jones-Hollowell, KeyBank Corporate Responsibility Officer. “The programs available to students at Stark State are top notch and provide a clear pathway to additional opportunities for success. We are proud to play a small role in their educational journey.”

“We are grateful to the KeyBank Foundation, long-time partners with Stark State College, for their continued financial support to help students in Summit and Stark counties complete degrees and certificates in high-demand fields,” said Para M. Jones, PhD, president of Stark State College. “Our students graduate and go to work for local companies and employers. Thanks to KeyBank for assisting in developing the workforce of today and tomorrow by helping our students complete degrees in advanced manufacturing, health care, information technology, business and other fields.”

KeyBank also awarded ArtsInStark a $25,000 grant to support the proposed Arts Pocket Park. The park would be located on the grounds of the Cultural Center for the Arts.

With the park, ArtsInStark is aiming to introduce green space into an area of Canton lacking in such space. Proposed elements include play mounds, gardens, a terrace, walking promenade, ornamental fencing and traffic-calming features.

An additional element in the park plan will be a performance and audience space that can be used by Cultural Center residents Canton Ballet Company and Sing Stark. The space will also be available to non-resident theatre companies with significant education programs and the community around the park.

“ArtsinStark appreciates the KeyBank contribution to our pocket park in a neighborhood of Canton lacking in greenspace,” said Emil Alecusan, Interim President and CEO of ArtsinStark. “The outdoor learning space will serve underserved youth with educational and life skills activities, and it will also be used by our Cultural Center’s Art Museum for youth and adult art instruction. We would also like to thank KeyBank for their support of ArtsinStark’s education programming for the past 10 years.”

ArtsInStark believes the space will create a place where people meet and socialize, and where children can play and learn. Research shows green spaces provide recreation opportunities, help improve physical and mental health and improve quality of life.

“The Arts Pocket Park will not only provide usable park space for our neighbors, but it will also encourage community collaboration amongst children, families and students,” said Jones-Hollowell. “A space that will inspire learning and growing.”

Key has supported ArtsInStark with more than $400,000 in grant funding since 2000.

Case IH, a brand of CNH Industrial, in partnership with TIM, a leading agribusiness operator with the largest mobile coverage in the country, presents the first results obtained at the Connected Farm, located in Água Boa, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Launched in 2021, the region received the 4G TIM in the Field project, bringing together all the brand’s advanced solutions and transforming into a Digital Agriculture laboratory.

A study developed by Agricef and Unicamp for the Connected Farm showed showing how connectivity increases productivity in the field, even in a region of high yield crop after season. Several factors were analyzed, structured in three pillars: Agricultural Efficiency, Economic Viability and Sustainability.

“The data shows us how connectivity effectively impacts the final result of the harvest. Real-time monitoring allows data to become information and decision-making to be faster and more efficient,” said Christian Gonzalez, Vice President of Case IH for Latin America.

Another vital goal of the Connected Farm is increased sustainable practice. With fuel and fertilizer savings, in addition to increased crop productivity, the study showed that the farm reduced carbon emissions by 12.5 kg of CO²/t of soybeans. This represents a 10% drop in the intensity of pollutant emissions.

Bringing connectivity to the countryside also means promoting benefits for the entire surrounding society. The two antennas installed by TIM facilitated the daily lives of more than 25,000 inhabitants of Água Boa, with an internet signal for more than 10 schools and universities, as well as 4 hospitals and health units that did not have access to the 4G network.

Internet access allows all these equipment, solutions, people, and results to be connected at all stages of the production cycle. With benefits ranging from weather monitoring to team management.

These changes have also created new habits in the day-to-day life of the farm. “Technology has only come to add to it. With connectivity, we gained standardization of processes and better professional training that added to agricultural efficiency,” says Felipe Zmijevski, the agronomist responsible for the farm.

The Case IH Connected Farm is a long-term project that will continue to bring together the most advanced technologies for Brazilian farmers.

The U.N. reports that the COVID-19 pandemic caused the largest rise in inequality between different countries in three decades. Through its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10, it asks stakeholders around the world to help reduce inequality both within and between countries now. Specific focus areas identified as needing immediate attention include equitable resource distribution, implementing social protection measures, combating discrimination, and supporting marginalized groups.

In response to these needs, TCS and the Irish Red Cross have partnered to invite students to propose ideas for making the planet better for all through the goIT Monthly Challenge for November.

Reducing inequality is a particular concern to both Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Irish Red Cross. The Irish Red Cross is a humanitarian disaster and emergency responder committed to delivering services equitably and helping people who have been harmed, displaced or made suddenly vulnerable restore safety and security to their lives. Similarly, TCS believes in building greater futures for all by connecting people to opportunities in the digital economy and driving toward creating a more fair and equitable world.

United in their shared responsibility for advancing equality in opportunities, services and possibility, TCS and the Irish Red Cross invite students aged 6 – 18 to use their ingenuity to create concepts for digital solutions that could help reduce inequality and empower excluded and vulnerable populations.

“Technological innovation has improved quality of life for many people and helped humanitarian organizations advance their missions more equitably than ever before,” said Christine Mackin, TCS’ global goIT Monthly Challenge lead. “With tech available to so many of us now, we can all innovate to solve problems. We’re really looking forward to student ideas for creating change around SDG 10.”

NEW YORK, November 3, 2023 /3BL/ – International advocacy organization Global Citizen and creative imprint, pgLang today announced ‘Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience’, a new long-term, large-scale effort to pioneer a first-of-its-kind international music touring circuit throughout the continent of Africa. Move Afrika’s first major music event, Move Afrika: Rwanda, will take place on December 6, 2023 at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda. Grammy Award, Pulitzer Prize winning artist and co-founder of pgLang, Kendrick Lamar will headline the event, and pgLang will serve as the Curator of Move Afrika for the next five years, from 2023 until 2028.

Move Afrika is Global Citizen’s latest effort to address the world’s inequities by creating job and entrepreneurship opportunities for the continent’s emerging generations through an annual series of world-class live events. Showcasing the best of Africa to the world, these events will drive transformative investments within local communities, engage local artists, vendors, agencies and crews, and provide opportunities for on-the-job skill development and training. Producing a world-class experience for fans and artists alike, Move Afrika will set a new gold-standard for entertainment touring events, increasing demand from international and regional artists to tour in the region and building local capacity within host cities across the continent.

In partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, Kigali, Rwanda will host Move Afrika every year for the next five years. Each year, additional countries will be added to the tour schedule, which aims to expand to five countries by 2025.

Move Afrika: Rwanda, taking place on Wednesday, December 6 at Kigali’s BK Arena, will be headlined by Kendrick Lamar, with more regional artists to be announced. The event will feature a citizen-led advocacy campaign calling for urgent action and bold commitments from world leaders on major issues across the continent. Key issues include: the need for increased funding for health, with a specific emphasis on women and girls; addressing the climate crisis and its impact on food security; tackling the lack of access to economic opportunities for future generations; and encouraging civic participation. To take action on these issues, text +250 790 008 555 on WhatsApp.

Information on how to get tickets can be found at moveafrika.org.

Move Afrika builds on Global Citizen’s previous campaigns and events across the continent that include: Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100, which brought Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Ed Sheeran, Usher, Eddie Vedder and Chris Martin of Coldplay to Johannesburg, South Africa in 2018; Global Citizen Live: Lagos that featured Davido, Femi Kuti, and Tiwa Savage at Fela Kuti’s New Afrika Shrine in 2021; and Global Citizen Festival: Accra, which brought Usher, SZA, Stormzy, and TEMS to the iconic Black Star Square in 2022.

Partners of Move Afrika include pgLang, the Rwanda Development Board and TimesLive.

“Africa is driving culture and creativity globally, but the Continent has been left out of the global music touring circuit for too long. By moving from one-off events to the sustained commitment of an annual tour, Move Afrika will drive transformative investments across Africa through the pioneering of a world-class touring circuit. Move Afrika will pave the way for many more artists to tour the Continent, while generating new economic opportunities within the entertainment industry for Africa’s booming youth generation. We are incredibly excited to bring this vision to life with pgLang and Kendrick Lamar, and are grateful for our partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, who shares our belief in this vision,” said Hugh Evans, Co-Founder and CEO, Global Citizen.

“Our goal with Move Afrika is to inspire local youth and artists to unlock their creativity. We hope to curate an immersive experience that empowers various communities and cultures across Africa and around the world for a lifetime,” said pgLang.

“We are delighted to host Global Citizen and to provide a platform for Move Afrika. This is a unique collaboration that aims to showcase the best of African creative talent to the world, through curated memorable entertainment experiences that address development priorities of our continent. Creating employment and income generating initiatives of the private sector, with a spotlight on the youth, is Rwanda Development Board’s core mandate. Together with Global Citizen and Move Afrika, we will position Rwanda as an entertainment hub for all African countries to benefit from the global creative industry,” said Francis Gatare, Chief Executive Officer, Rwanda Development Board.

“I am honored and humbled to play a meaningful role that supports new age global efforts to deal with health inequity, challenge poverty, and empower women and girls. The neglect of these predicaments, including global warming, have a detrimental effect on the prospects of the citizens of Africa and this situation cannot be allowed to continue unabated. I am happy that the Global Citizen movement has reignited the debate about these critical matters and that it is continuing to keep Africa top of mind by having Move Afrika: Rwanda. Across the entire African continent there is huge excitement for driving economic development, tourism and world class entertainment. We look forward to announcing additional cities for 2024 and 2025 in the coming months,” said Tshepo Mahloele, Africa Patron, Global Citizen.

Since its inception in Australia in 2008, Global Citizen has grown to become the world’s leading advocacy organization and one of the largest, most visible platforms uniting people around the world to call on world leaders to end extreme poverty, defend the planet and address the inequity of women and girls. The organization has taken its action-based live music events and campaigns from New York City to India, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, Ghana, and Canada. The sustainability landscape is rife with technical jargon and terms. Many executives argue the myriad of acronyms in sustainable fashion complicates the overarching mission.

November 2, 2023 /3BL/ – Sean Kovarovic is the Founder of Wu De Health & Combat (wdhc), a one-stop holistic health and preventative medicine shop that anyone can afford. Sean’s journey from military service to entrepreneurship is a testament to his unwavering determination and passion for making a difference in the community.

After leaving the Army with debilitating knee injuries, Sean Kovarovic found solace and healing in Taijiquan (commonly referred to as Tai Chi) – a traditional practice of relaxed, circular movements that works with breath regulation and cultivating a righteous and neutral mind. His remarkable recovery inspired him to share the benefits of holistic health practices with others.

“I have seen amazing results teaching Taijiquan, and I would love to share that with the world,” said Sean. With a vision to promote morality, health, and self-defense, Sean founded Wu De Health & Combat, a nonprofit dedicated to improving lives through accessible holistic health solutions.

One of Sean’s key supporters on his entrepreneurial journey has been his Sky’s the Limit mentor Paige Ogawa, a Strategy and Consulting Senior Analyst at Accenture. Facing the challenge of funding his venture, Sean turned to Paige, who has a passion for empowering small businesses stemming from her own experience growing up with her family’s business. Together, they developed a compelling pitch that garnered attention and recognition.

“Paige helped me with how to format and use my pitch deck to send emails to businesses to request funding. As a result, my pitch deck brought me funding opportunities,” said Sean.

Sean received the Leader of the Year award at the Health 2.0 Conference in Las Vegas, an accolade which not only acknowledged his achievements, but also opened doors to additional funding opportunities.

Sean emphasizes the importance of persistence and overcoming obstacles as an entrepreneur. “Never give up! You will face obstacles. Change your thinking until you can move past it. If you are persistent, you will make it,” encourages Sean to fellow entrepreneurs just starting out.

This Veterans Day, Sean Kovarovic’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience of veterans and their ability to create positive change in the world.

Read more about Sean’s inspiring success story and Wu De Health & Combat here.

To further celebrate Veterans Day and his achievements and inspire others, Sky’s the Limit will be hosting the highly anticipated Limitless! premiere featuring the founder himself. Limitless! is a groundbreaking series where entrepreneurs can share their experiences, insights, and strategies for success. This episode will provide a unique opportunity for attendees to learn from Sean’s remarkable journey, gain valuable knowledge, connect with like-minded individuals, and gain insights into building successful businesses around passion and overcoming challenges. More details can be found here.

Sky’s the Limit offers opportunities for traditionally marginalized entrepreneurs – typically those who identify as LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, women, veterans, disabled people, and people from low-income backgrounds – to connect with mentors to come together to foster, grow, and shape modern and future enterprise. The organization has also provided over $450,000 in startup grants and educated tens of thousands of diverse entrepreneurs.

Our comprehensive community engagement and philanthropic initiatives are overseen by The Covia Foundation, established to formalize our approach to operating as a responsible corporate citizen. We believe that when our communities thrive, we all stand to benefit from a brighter, more prosperous future. Across the organization, and with the help of our dedicated Team Members, we strive to give our best back to the communities where we live and work by investing time, talent and financial resources.

We greatly value the relationships we’ve built with our communities. Meaningful interactions with neighbors, community members, customers and partners have helped shape our organization, and will continue to inspire and guide us in the future. To further support impactful community engagement and encourage Team Member volunteerism, we annually host Covia Cares Action Days in the communities we live and work in.

Here are some of the examples of which we are very proud this year:

Huntersville, North Carolina Office

On October 12, Team Members from Covia’s Huntersville Office volunteered at Classroom Central in Charlotte, North Carolina. Classroom Central distributes free school supplies to thousands of teachers each year in more than 220 schools in six school districts in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Teachers are eligible to receive supplies from Classroom Central if they teach in one of these school districts and at a school where 50% or more of the students receive free or reduced-cost lunch. Team Members helped pack more than 80 orders for teachers to pick up for their classrooms. The packs include classroom essentials such as pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, glue sticks, pocket folders, filler paper, highlighters, and much more. Thanks to the team at Huntersville, deserving students will have the resources they need to succeed and thrive!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama Plant

On Thursday, October 19, Team Members from Covia’s Tuscaloosa Plant gathered to participate in the annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) ‘Light the Night’ walk in Birmingham to celebrate and remember those affected by blood cancers. Gina Laney, Office Administrator, planned and organized the walk for the plant, helping to raise nearly $3,000 for blood cancer research. Gina has a personal connection to the cause; she is a 16-year survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and sadly lost her aunt to leukemia.

Wedron, Illinois Plant

Team Members from the Wedron, Illinois, Plant volunteered at Camp Tuckabatchee, a day and resident camp dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults through the camp experience. The camp is just a few miles from the Wedron facility, and the Team Members were on hand to help with the construction of their haunted maze. But it’s not just a maze. This particular maze has cabins scattered throughout. These cabins created additional areas for monsters and other scary creatures to hide. Using old pallets, the Team Members spent the day building the maze from cabin to cabin.

Tomah, Wisconsin Plant

Team Members from our Tunnel City facility in Tomah, Wisconsin, helped Habitat for Humanity of La Crosse build a home for a local veteran. Covia Team Members spent several days on site securing floor joists, preparing foundation slabs for installation and more. They were proud to support a local veteran and play a small part in creating this forever home.

Oregon, Illinois Plant

In partnership with the Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foundation, Covia’s Oregon, IL, facility hosted the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program’s Bass Fishing workshop earlier this month. Twenty-five women participated in the workshop, which focused on educating participants about the equipment, tackle, and techniques used by professional bass anglers to catch largemouth bass.
