November 28, 2023 /3BL/ – Inogen Alliance will have a presence at the upcoming COP28 held in Dubai. UN’s COP (Conference of the Parties) is the largest annual climate summit driving action to address global warming across world leaders, country delegates, representatives of business, civil society, local communities and media.

The event titled “Practices to Strengthen Financing for Climate Transition through Public and Private Interventions” will take place 4 December, 16.00 – 18.00 in the Azerbaijan Pavilion (MS01G1) in the Blue Zone.

Our Associate Sustainera in Azerbaijan is leading this event with support from our Associates Antea Brasil, Integral Consult Egypt, and Tonkin+Taylor New Zealand with speakers and a panel discussion.

The Inogen Alliance panel event aims to identify proper channels for accessing finance through the GCF (Green Climate Fund) which would mobilize investments by the private sector; explore and promote effective strategies and practices that enhance Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) which promotes investment by the private sector for a successful transition toward a low emissions and climate-resilient future. This event will delve into the means and examples of how to access funding by GCF and the critical role of ESG principles in shaping investment decisions and financial mechanisms to combat climate change and foster a more sustainable global economy.

Sustainable finance, including the increasing array of related financial products, is attracting the attention of private sector investors, policy makers, and civil society stakeholders because of its potential to deliver long-term enterprise value that aligns with societal values and contributes to sustainability and climate-related objectives. Despite noteworthy progress, considerable challenges still hinder the potential for these approaches. Access to adequate finance by governments which can mobilize private sector investments in climate action for most developing countries is still lagging behind. Different sources of finance, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF) are available channels for governments. The GCF offers several options to prepare countries to be ready to access such finance including readiness activities, project proposal facility and others.

One of the most important avenues for the private sector to be ready to identify, prepare, and implement climate action is through proper Environment, Social and Governance practices. Challenges facing the private sector to implement such practices include, the promulgation of different approaches, data inconsistencies, lack of comparability of ESG criteria and rating methodologies, as well as inadequate clarity over how ESG integration affects asset allocation. Important opportunities around partnerships and the scaling of solutions are likely to be generated as well.

ESG ratings, which are applied to companies representing around 80% of market capitalization in 2020, have evolved in recent years to incorporate long-term financial risks and opportunities in investment decision making processes. At the same time, the environmental ‘E’ pillar score of ESG rating is being increasingly used as a tool to align investments with a low-carbon transition, and a range of financial market products and measurement approaches have developed to help investors align portfolios with specific climate-objectives and strategies in line with the Paris Agreement. Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) plays an important role in identifying the support needed and received for climate action.

Dr. Abdel-Aziz, Chairman of Integral Consult, our Associate in Egypt, with more than 29 years of experience, including climate mitigation projects in the energy, industry and waste sectors. Dr. Abdel-Aziz worked on the preparation of Iraq country program submitted to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and on the preparation of Georgia’s Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) which included concept notes to be submitted to the GCF.

Dr. Abdel-Aziz has been extensively involved in the negotiations process and is currently a senior advisor to COP27 presidency team leading on mitigation and transparency issues. He is also the advisor to the Egyptian Minister of Environment on climate change issues since 2014. He was also the Like-Minded Group of Developing Countries transparency coordinator during the negotiations of the Modalities, Procedures and Guidelines of the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement. He is an expert in emissions projections with UNFCCC and a lead reviewer for reviewing Annex I Parties national communications, biennial reports and GHG inventories and has also led technical analysis teams for non-Annex I Parties BUR.

Gulnara Aslanbayli is Executive Director of American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan since 2020. Ms. Aslanbayli has previously worked with the I.C.E. Istituto Commercio nel Estero as a Senior Trade Analyst. Amcham Azerbaijan is the leading business association in Azerbaijan and recognizes the pivotal role that business communities play in addressing climate change. Since becoming executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan, Gulnara Aslanbayli has initiated a new direction in activity of the Chamber related to the sustainable development. Changing the world does not rest on the shoulders of one single individual, organization, country, or other entity. Nor is there one single solution to create that change the world needs. While we continue to search for ways to lower our footprint, reduce waste, and implement sustainable solutions into our everyday lives, it’s important to know that none of us can do it all alone — creating positive impact is, and will always be, a team effort through and through.

Leading up to this year’s Giving Tuesday, a new survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the Arbor Day Foundation found that 79% of U.S. adults believe corporations have an obligation to address climate change and that right now is the time for everyone to work collaboratively to address critical climate issues. Additionally, 71% of respondents reported to be more loyal to companies taking an active role in protecting the environment.

Those notions of collaboration and trust are why so many companies around the world are supporting external solutions to help expand the reach of their impact into territories beyond their internal operations. Take EC30 for example. On Earth Day 2019, EC30 launched with the mission of sustainably creating and packaging home and personal care products, incorporating a number of sustainability aspects both within their operations and for their customers. This Thanksgiving, AEG hosted dinner for nearly one thousand Southern California families in need, helping them celebrate the day together and enjoy time with their loved ones.

“We are proud to partner with local non-profits to help transformed the lives of many families this holiday season by providing their Thanksgiving meal,” said Anette Padilla, AEG’s Director of Community Foundation. “Serving Thanksgiving dinner has been a long-standing tradition for AEG, and we hope that we are helping to alleviate some of that stress for local families.”

Just ahead of Thanksgiving, on November 17, AEG hosted the 20th annual Thanksgiving Foundations’ Feast in concert with its sports franchise the LA Galaxy and its stadium Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA. LA Galaxy’s head coach, Greg Vanney and defenders Jalen Neal and Marcus Ferkranus joined AEG staff members in serving Thanksgiving meals to more than 250 families in the South Bay. In addition to enjoying a full Thanksgiving buffet, families participated in a variety of arts and craft activities and all children in attendance received a new pair of shoes through a partnership with Shoes That Fit.

On November 22, AEG hosted its inaugural Holly Jolly Thanksgiving Dinner at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, where AEG employees served more than 200 families a Thanksgiving meal. Attendees also received free passes to the Magic of Lights, a drive-through holiday lights experience, at the Empire Polo Club.

On November 23, AEG employees served 500 Thanksgiving meals, prepared by Wolfgang Puck Catering, to local families in need at the 11th annual Community Thanksgiving celebration at the Novo LA LIVE in Los Angeles, CA.

Tony Matteroli, Sr. Specialist – Talent Acquisition, FedEx Freight, has a special connection to Tanzania and the Maasai people – his adopted daughter, Angel, was born and raised in a small Maasai village.

Recently they returned from a summer trip where Tony and Angel visited her family, with whom she remains close, and brought much-needed donated items such as shoes, clothing, electronics, and more for people in the village. It’s a journey Angel embarks on each summer, accompanied by Tony every other year.

Tony began volunteering at an American school in Tanzania in November 2010. “I had always wanted to visit Africa,” Tony says, “and I had always wanted to do some international volunteer work; and the opportunity came up to do both in one trip.”

It was on this trip that Tony first met then 11-year-old Angel, a student at the school. Angel grew up in a traditional Maasai village where people live in small mud huts with no running water or electricity and often faced a scarcity of food. Despite the lack of resources, she was raised by a large, loving family with a father, who believed in the value of education. Her father, unable to send all 16 of his children to school, selected Angel and one of her sisters to attend school in another village.

While there, Tony developed a close bond with Angel, in whom he saw so much potential, and her family. In 2012, Angel’s family agreed to allow Tony to adopt her, so she could take advantage of educational opportunities in the U.S. With the adoption, Angel’s family grew larger by one more father!

Angel began a new life in Colorado and excelled in school with Tony’s support. Never losing the connection to her village, she founded a nonprofit – 1 Love – while in high school. Through her nonprofit, Angel helps provide clean water, electricity, safer housing for the village, and opportunities for more Maasai children to attend school.

Angel is now a senior at the University of Colorado Boulder, majoring in Digital Communication and Media/ Multimedia. She continues to spend summers with her family in Africa providing support for not only them, but the entire village.

Medtronic LABS accelerates access to healthcare in underserved communities around the world through technology. And now, the code behind its digital health platform SPICE is open source – making it available to anyone.

Since Medtronic LABS launched in 2013, the independent nonprofit with Medtronic funding has enrolled over 217,000 people in one million patientshealthcare and trained over 8,000 community health workers in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the United States.

SPICE is a digital health platform embedded directly within health systems and government digital ecosystems. Making its code available to health system partners and governments is just one way LABS approaches global health collaboratively.

And it’s that spirit of collaboration that accelerates access in low-and middle-income communities.

How it works

At any given moment, community health workers are visiting patients in their homes and at community events, often in hard-to-reach places. Equipped with screening tools and SPICE, they screen patients for a range of conditions including hypertension, diabetes, malaria, and TB.

If needed, they refer patients to the nearest health facility where they are immediately connected to care. Medical staff confirm the diagnosis, and enroll the patient in LABS’ programs, where they receive a personalized care plan.

The community health worker continues to follow up with patients directly based on their care plan.

This approach – pairing health tech with strong partnerships and community care – is working. LABS has screened half a million people for non-communicable diseases since 2014.

And open-source technology means more organizations, health systems, and governments can access LABS’ health tech – connecting even more people to care.

“We offer a fundamentally new take on risk-based, data-driven community health, and we hope that by open sourcing our platform, our approach might be widely adopted,” said LABS’ Chief Strategy and Product Officer, Anne Stake.

Becoming open source also allowed LABS to receive the designation as a Digital Public Good by a multi-stakeholder United Nations-endorsed initiative that works to reduce barriers to the digitization of health systems.

“We made SPICE open source and applied to be a Digital Public Good to enable any health system innovator to use the technology and ultimately improve population health outcomes,” said Stake.

A tiny pill, a slender vial of fluid—the revolutionary drug therapies that patients around the world depend on may seem vanishingly small, but as any life science innovator knows, they are the result of a massive effort involving hundreds of people and some of the world’s most advanced scientific concepts.

For architects, the story can be even more complex: behind every life-saving therapy, there’s a built-for-purpose manufacturing or R&D facility capable of supporting the immensely complex, technically robust process of making a drug that is safe, stable, and effective.

Architects who envision and develop efficient and innovative life science facilities must specialize not only in the fundamentals of any architecture project—creating a building that is safe, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing—but also in the unique considerations and constraints inherent to an industry on which lives depend.

Designing for purpose in life sciences

By designing facilities as mission-driven centers of technical excellence, architects can help life science companies achieve their purpose.

Efficiency

In many industries, speed-to-market is focused solely on revenue generation and market share. In the life sciences, getting therapies to the people who need them is often about life and death. Every project begins by finding a client’s “why”, which then serves as a North star for the entire project. Each project begins with a charrette—sometimes called a visioning session—to define objectives and envision the possibilities. Sustainability and employee wellness

At the core of every life science client’s mission is improving lives. They expect their operations, buildings and environments to reflect this mission, in both qualitative and quantitative measures. Sustainable architecture requires an intentional approach. Rather than an afterthought, it must be incorporated from the beginning of the design process. Healthy buildings encompass many things, including energy efficiency, responsible resource management, and employee wellness.

Environmental considerations that guide contextual design for life science facilities

Contextual design has made a comeback in recent years. It requires architects to reflect on the natural and built environment of a building and design with these in mind. Life science architects start with the big picture of a building’s surroundings and then gradually zoom in. This macro-to-micro approach allows them to build a complete ecosystem within a building or campus.

Climatic conditions

In contextual design, architects consider the natural environment a building will be nested within to create comfortable buildings. Beyond creating satisfying connections with the natural environment, designing with climatic conditions in mind creates more efficient spaces. For example, they can factor in prevailing wind conditions, demand for cooling versus heating, and solar heat and glare.

Solar orientation

Architects consider the possible positioning of a building to enhance natural light. Siting buildings carefully to maximize daylight can improve team members’ moods, circadian health, and overall productivity. Exterior walls can be constructed to maximize natural views and daylight while minimizing direct sunlight to reduce cooling loads and unwanted glare.

Orienting the building so people occupied space is predominantly on north and south facades, where we can maximize indirect natural light by simple horizontal shading elements, allows us to create a serene and inviting atmosphere. East and west facades have low angle and more dynamic sun conditions that can utilize sun shading or more complex electrochromic glazing, which automatically adjusts the amount of light entering the space. Meanwhile, daylight harvesting systems intelligently supplement electric lighting with natural light, maintaining a harmonious balance between functionality and sustainability.

Topography

A building’s surrounding topography—even if it appears challenging —can be an opportunity to enhance the building both expressively and functionally. Responding with sensitivity to challenging geography or an undulating landscape can offer architects new and exciting design opportunities that a flat piece of land just doesn’t offer. Utilizing grade changes on certain projects can optimize material movement by having incoming materials on one floor and outgoing on another, allowing gravity to assist with material movement within the building.

Vegetated landscapes

Architects can leverage existing biophilia to enhance the design and the user experience of a new building. By framing both the visual and physical connections to the surrounding landscapes, a design can connect building users to their surroundings.

Team members preparing for the CPA exam can join the CPA Mentorship Program, offered by CPA: Your Destination – an internal group that informs and supports team members throughout the exam process.
