December 19, 2023 /3BL/ – It’s called the world’s most perilous migrant route for a reason: The Darién Gap, which lies between Colombia and Panama, has made headlines for its brutal conditions, and many people who travel through it die during the journey. Risks include hunger, dehydration, injuries, illnesses, robberies, and rape.

Migrants are facing unthinkable threats, yet more and more are making the trek every year. Action Against Hunger, which has worked in Colombia for over 25 years, is now dispatching health teams to respond to the crisis. Mobile teams are providing lifesaving services to as many migrants as possible.

Migration numbers are climbing drastically. Hundreds of thousands of people from Venezuela, Colombia, Haiti, China, and other parts of the globe cross through Panama with one dream in mind—a better life. Many young people, including children, venture into nearly 70 miles of uncharted wilderness, all in the hopes of finding a life without poverty, conflict, or instability.

Each year, more and more migrants flee their homes and travel northward. In 2022, nearly 250,000 people traveled through the Darién Gap. According to data from Panama’s National Immigration Service, from January to October 2023, more than 480,000 people crossed through the Darién jungle. The numbers have risen 87% since 2019 and 60% since last summer. Lack of opportunities in host countries and economic hardship are largely driving the migration.

In recent weeks, peak numbers of 3,000 people per day have been recorded in the Darién Gap. As migrant numbers reach record highs, Action Against Hunger’s program in the Darién Gap supports the most vulnerable migrants. Mobile teams provide maternal and child healthcare through expert medical and nutrition staff.

“We’re focusing on supporting the most vulnerable migrants who cross the Darién Gap, which includes pregnant and lactating mothers, as well as children under the age of 10,” says John Orlando, Action Against Hunger’s Country Director for Colombia. “We’re prioritizing healthcare for pregnant women, new mothers and young children. Many travelers will continue their journey north from the Darién jungle, and our mission is to ensure their health and wellbeing.”

Action Against Hunger began responding throughout the region in September, with staff focusing on the highest-risk individuals. To date, the mobile team has provided more than 3,236 primary health consultations, 266 supplements to prevent malnutrition, and ten treatments for malnourished women and children.

“We have identified children with chronic malnutrition, stunted children, and children with micronutrient deficiencies or ‘hidden hunger,’” says Angélica, one of the mobile team doctors. Doctors are also supporting pregnant mothers and addressing respiratory infections and skin problems in many patients.

“We have seen children with respiratory diseases, which creates an additional risk for them to cross the jungle in these conditions,” she says. “The humidity and physical demands will undoubtedly worsen their health conditions.”

Marcela, a 26-year-old migrant mother from Venezuela, faced unimaginable perils during her journey. Still, she and her husband chose to cross with their two children to find food, income, and opportunities.

“Everyone judges you when they see you with the children, they say you are irresponsible,” she says. “But things are very difficult at home. We didn’t have enough to feed our children for many days, and we were forced to migrate.”

Marcela said that with little money and resources, she and her husband had to make difficult decisions under the pressure of poverty. She knew the journey would be difficult, but they still decided to go together. If one had stayed behind, they would likely have been forced to choose between buying food or paying rent.

“We thought about it a lot and we are both going to get the children out of it,” she says. “We have to have faith and keep going.”

Aramark volunteers are active in their local communities throughout the year, but the yearning to give back amplifies during the holiday season. With more than 70 Aramark Building Community and line of business volunteer projects happening from November to December, we’re highlighting some of the service projects that supported those that serve during the holidays.

Aramark is proud to employ service members, veterans, and military spouses in a wide variety of roles and positions across the company. Aramark also works with a network of organizations to help attract and engage military-connected talent with a passion for service.

In November, Aramark Workplace Experience Group created Salute Hospitality, a new, curated brand tailored to serving the hospitality needs of people in the military and government communities where we operate.

Aramark Businesses Get Active

An Aramark team of leaders and personnel from Dallas, Houston, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, New York City, Newark, Los Angeles, and Virginia Beach, representing SHFM, Aramark Refreshments, supply chain, HD Supply, Workplace Hospitality, and Salute Hospitality, came together to assemble 300 holiday care boxes for deployed service members. The provision boxes were crafted at Aramark’s Dallas Refreshments Market Center and included items such as snacks, personal care items, towels, cold weather accessories, laundry detergent, candy, note pads, pens, and more. The kits also contained a personalized holiday note and letter from Salute Hospitality.

“Our care packages carry an immeasurable amount of gratitude for our service men and women. Through the We Care Campaign, we aim to honor their unwavering dedication by providing a tangible reminder that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed. Together, we show our heroes that they are cherished, appreciated, and deeply cared for,” said Aramark Vice President of Growth, Ellen Wilson.

This month, Salute Hospitality volunteers and Aramark client bases throughout the United States also created nearly 2,000 cards for the Holiday Cards for our Military Challenge. Click on the video to see the volunteers in action.

Laying Wreaths Across America

Members from Aramark’s Salute employee resource group (ERG), Community Relations, and Star Teams once again supported the laying of wreaths in our Nation’s cemeteries during National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, December 16, 2023. Aramark volunteers from Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Nashville, and Philadelphia joined the more than two million volunteers and supporters who gathered to remember, honor, and teach, at more than 4,000 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea, and abroad.

Local Volunteers Shine

In November, Aramark’s New England Star Team, and volunteers from across all lines of business, virtually assembled health and fitness bags for Veterans involved with Home Base. The kits will provide participants of the Warrior Health & Fitness Program with tools to take control of their physical well-being and manage their stress at home.

Volunteers added a personal touch to their Health and Fitness Kits by writing thoughtful notes of uplift to the Veteran recipient of their kit. These notes serve as an important reminder to these Veterans that they have a community rooting for them as they work to heal invisible wounds.

Aramark actively engages with the military community through career opportunities, external partnerships, and the Aramark Salute ERG. Read more about Aramark’s efforts to hire, engage, and celebrate veterans and military families.

Covia has been an innovator in the industrial and energy markets for over 80 years – providing a wide array of high-quality minerals and mineral solutions. Our years of experience, technical expertise, and product range provide us with the unique opportunity to support our customers and create value through product development and innovation.

One of our Covia Values is to “Deliver on Promise.” We’ve taken steps to deliver on promise by expanding the capabilities and availability of our Technical Team to help develop solutions that anticipate the production needs of our customers.

The Technical Team at Covia has evolved over the last few years, with a greater focus on future growth and opportunities. To get a better understanding of where Covia is headed, let’s take a closer look at the evolution of our industrial product strategy.

Laying the Foundation

To promote innovation and meet the ever-evolving needs of our customers, Covia has made recent investments in our infrastructure, equipment, and workforce. Of those investments, one of the most notable has been the structuring and implementation of the Technical Team to handle product development in a meaningful way. This change presented us with the opportunity to expand our development efforts in new and exciting ways.

The Evolution of Covia’s Technical Team and Industrial Product Strategy

The spark that helped shift our focus to updating our industrial product strategy was the development of our LUMINEX®product, a silica-based, ultra-white filler that is used in engineered stone products. This innovation completely changed our outlook on product development and the way we deliver value to the markets we serve. We updated our industrial product strategy with one goal in mind: to drastically increase the value we can deliver to our customers.

Our Technical Team, guided by the insights uncovered from product and market research, took this opportunity to enhance our current product line in hopes of creating the right product that solves the right problems for the right customer. These changes, however, take time and careful planning. Much of this growth has come as we enhanced the capabilities of our Technical Team by hiring skilled new Team Members to drive innovation and growth.

In addition to the growth in our Technical Team, we have also expanded our machine capabilities. At our Fort Smith plant, we recently installed new ultra-fine grinding equipment to alter the particle size of the minerals we produce. Covia’s micronization services reduce minerals to the proper particle size to work best for a particular application. This capability was key to the creation of our CRISTOBALEX™ product, a specialty silica blend composed primarily of cristobalite, which is transformed from high quality spherical quartz grains, then micronized to enhance the whiteness and performance of coatings that contain the CRISTOBALEX™ product.

Our investment in our machining capabilities has provided us with the potential to create a significant impact across several key industries and opens avenues to serve new markets and customers. We have recently enhanced our capabilities by implementing a state-of-the-art rotary kiln for thermal processing. This advanced thermal kiln enables us to modify the crystalline structure of the minerals we mine, allowing us to tailor solutions to our customers’ specific needs. This is significant in the development of materials such as our CERASIL® product, a high-purity ceramic silica that is produced from high purity crystalline silica feedstock for the formulation and manufacture of ceramic whitewares, enamels, and glazes.

The resources we have invested in recent years to improve our product development strategy have given us a unique opportunity to greatly increase our value-add capabilities. With a wide array of new products and services on the horizon, we look forward to sharing our newest innovations with you as they are developed and become available to the public.

Investing Resources Toward Future Growth

Our technical team is readily available to discuss your unique needs and develop an innovative solution to meet your production demands and environmental obligations. Thanks to these recent investments in our Team Members and facilities, we have laid a foundation to better serve you and your organization’s unique needs for years to come.

Covia is your reliable, long-term partner who can keep up with your demand and deliver top-quality solutions. CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., December 19, 2023 /3BL/ – Regions Bank and the Regions Foundation on Wednesday announced a tornado response plan aimed at supporting communities that were impacted by a series of tornadoes Saturday, Dec. 9.

The plan is built around two key elements:

Funding from the Regions Foundation to support community-based recovery effortsDisaster-recovery financial services from Regions Bank to help people and businesses in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky

Regions Foundation Funding:

The Regions Foundation is providing a total of $100,000 to be divided among tornado relief funds operated by United Way of Greater Nashville and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, as well as the food distribution program operated by Manna Café Ministries in Clarksville.

United Way of Greater Nashville and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee quickly launched a coordinated storm response after Saturday’s tornadoes. Together, the organizations are working with nonprofits and faith-based community partners to address a wide range of urgent needs for storm survivors in several counties. The Women’s Leadership Development Forum is focused on the development of women at the middle management levels. This program addresses Northern Trust’s corporate need to grow and develop strategic thinkers and leaders.

In India, the program is run in two cohorts of high-potential female talent each year.

In 2022, the U.S. program experienced a few firsts: it was executed in a fully virtual environment with participants across North America, and was revamped to pair both male and female senior vice presidents as co-leaders of facilitated discussions for their assigned cohorts. Racial and ethnically diverse women comprised 46 percent of the total women participants.

In India, the program is run in two cohorts of high-potential female talent each year.
