In honor of his outstanding volunteer work in 2022, Ryan Whitman, manager of our Smart Energy Network project, was one of three Atlantic City Electric employees who recently received Exelon’s Powering Communities Employee Volunteer Award.

This recognition is the company’s highest achievement for volunteerism and community involvement, and honored Ryan’s contributions to Operation Safe Haven, a nonprofit that provides resources and services to veterans and first responders in Southern New Jersey. Thanks to Ryan’s efforts, Operation Safe Haven received a $5,000 grant from Exelon to support its programing which includes housing, therapy, mental health services, and coaching.

As a combat veteran, Ryan understands the complexities that veterans face every day. He notes, “I understand what veterans struggle with when they come home from war, and how difficult it can be to restart your life when you feel like you don’t necessarily fit in.”

Ryan, who is the former president for our Exelon Militaries Actively Connected (EMAC) employee resource group, identified Operation Safe Haven while he was seeking out local nonprofits that support veterans—and he quickly became committed to serving the nonprofit through funding and volunteer events.

Ryan regularly brings together our employees and EMAC volunteers to work on important projects for Operation Save Haven, including electrical projects and building a laundry room for veterans. In total, Ryan spent more than 100 hours volunteering for the organization over the past year.

When asked about Ryan’s impact on Operation Safe Haven, founder Donnie Davis said, “Ryan has such passion for helping other veterans and law enforcement officers. It’s neat to have a leader who really cares and can bring together a group of volunteers.”

In 2022, Atlantic City Electric employees volunteered more than 10,000 hours – which is more than 1,250 workdays – to support 125 different events throughout South Jersey. This volunteerism is on top of approximately $1.2 million Atlantic City Electric contributed to local nonprofits.

At Boston Children’s Hospital, CIO Heather Nelson said she has been working with T-Mobile to build a hybrid 5G environment, which would support both secure hospital traffic as well as general public connections, but with the idea that Wi-Fi would remain as a backup.

“We knew our current legacy systems couldn’t scale,” she said. With new technology coming, she added, “We knew that we needed to shift our clinical mobility strategies, why not do it and why not make sure that it’s scalable and that we can grow with it, and that it can grow with us.” She added that she’s had conversations with many medical device manufacturers that are embedding 5G capabilities in their products.

WASHINGTON, February 7, 2024 /3BL/ – Today is Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Action Day and Pepco employees are on Capitol Hill to meet with representatives and advocates for policies that protect funding for LIHEAP and support vulnerable households in the District of Columbia and Maryland.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps limited-income households with their home energy bills. Customers should not wait for winter heating bills to arrive before applying for help – LIHEAP is a first come, first serve program and is only available until funding runs out. Grants are provided in varying amounts (up to $1,800 in the District of Columbia and $2,213 in Maryland), with no payback required. Requirements include a household’s income, type of fuel and type of dwelling. Homeowners, renters, roomers, and subsidized housing tenants may also be eligible. Customers do not have to be behind on their bills to receive a grant.

Maryland customers can apply for LIHEAP energy assistance through the Department of Human Services website, or by calling the Maryland Department of Human Services Office of Home Energy Programs at 1-800-332-6347. District of Columbia residents can apply for assistance online through the Department of Energy and the Environment (DOEE) website or by calling 3-1-1. DOEE’s Utility Affordability Programs website provides further guidance on assistance programs available for residents who are facing financial challenges. As a reminder, District residents who have received LIHEAP assistance in the past must recertify their need for assistance this year. Enrollment does not roll over automatically.

“LIHEAP provides critical support to individuals and families in need,” said Valencia McClure, Pepco Region President. “Our teams are advocating for continued funding of this vital program and we urge any of our customers who may qualify to reach out and take advantage of the support available as soon as possible. We can do so much more when customers reach out to us early, whether through programs like LIHEAP or other payment assistance we offer directly.”

Pepco works hard to keep every customer connected by offering payment arrangements and helping customers secure grants and other support from several available energy assistance programs. In 2023, Pepco helped more than 35,000 customers secure more than $45.5 million in energy assistance, including more than $17.5 million in LIHEAP funding that helps pay customer energy bills and money that customers do not need to pay back.

If customers do not meet LIHEAP requirements and are having difficulty paying their energy bills, Pepco Customer Care is also available to help by offering:

Flexible payment arrangements that offer tailored payment plans Extending payment periods for balances  Connecting customers with energy assistance funds Budget Billing, which averages payments over a 12-month period and helps avoid seasonal spikes and provides a consistent monthly bill.

As it was reported in the recently released 2023 Be Well. Do Well. Progress Report, Aramark is committed to reducing food waste across its operations with the dual goals of conserving resources and minimizing the company’s environmental footprint.

Aramark minimizes waste through a holistic food management process from planning and purchasing, to production and service. Through innovative food ordering and preparation techniques, Aramark works with the Kansas City Chiefs to produce and prepare just enough food to feed the crowd based on ticket sales, promotions, and tickets scanned.

Aramark and the Chiefs partner with local charity, Pete’s Garden, to redirect uneaten and untouched food to organizations throughout the Greater Kansas City area that serve families in need.

Aramark Sports + Entertainment’s District Manager, Tim Witkowski, sits on the Food Waste Reduction Project Advisory Committee and works to publicize and deploy food waste reduction strategies to support the Kansas City Regional Food Loss and Waste Reduction Action Plan.

“Although our goal is always to eliminate food waste before it is generated, there may still be instances when we have excess safe-to-eat food available. Our food donation program provides this food to hunger relief agencies, like Pete’s Garden, who distribute meals to organizations that serve families with children,” said Witkowski. “We donate thousands of pounds of food each year, which helps feed families in the Kansas City community and keeps surplus prepared food out of landfills.”

Food donations don’t just come from meals that weren’t served inside GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Chiefs, Aramark also redirects surplus food from the player training meals. In 2023 alone, these food donations to Pete’s Garden totaled 5,938 pounds, or 5,000 meals to Kansas City area families.

“Aramark and the Chiefs appreciate that we can redirect surplus food from our player training meals to local families facing food insecurity. Chiefs players and staff know the importance of healthy eating. The families served by Pete’s Garden deserve healthy food too. We are pleased to support their efforts to get nutritious meals on more family dinner tables,” said Erin Wishon, Senior Executive Chef Aramark/Kansas City Chiefs.

These waste reduction efforts support the Chiefs’ “Extra Yard for the Environment” program, which encompasses several directives that each aim to make GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and the University of Kansas Health System Training Complex as environmentally efficient and responsible as possible.

Aramark is a USDA Food Loss and Waste 2030 Champion and is committed to reducing food loss and waste in its U.S. operations 50% by 2030 from its 2015 baseline. For fiscal year 2023, pre-consumer food waste in U.S. food operations was 73% lower than the company’s 2015 baseline. In addition, Aramark has been a member of the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, an industry collaboration focused on reducing waste and finding ways to donate or recycle unavoidable food waste, for nearly a decade.

Jeff Simmons, President and CEO of Elanco Animal Health, joined Jim Cramer on Mad Money to discuss Elanco’s exciting pipeline with six potential blockbuster products expected to launch in major markets over the next two years. The company recently launched the first and only USDA conditionally-approved therapeutic solution proven to treat canine parvovirus (parvo) — one of the most contagious and deadly viruses a dog can contract with a 91%1 mortality rate if not treated with supportive care.

In support of this cause, Elanco announced a first-of-its-kind, multi-year campaign to save 1 million puppies from unnecessary death from the highly contagious parvo: Defend Puppies. Defeat Parvo.  An estimated 900 dogs are diagnosed with parvo daily2 in the U.S. – mostly unvaccinated puppies. Yet Elanco research revealed only 44% of dog owners know what parvo is, with 20% having no knowledge of the disease.3 With dog owners being the first line of defense in protecting their puppies, there is need for more wide-spread education.

With the introduction of the Defend Puppies. Defeat Parvo. mission, Elanco aims to increase education about this deadly disease, while increasing veterinarian’s access to the first and only U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) conditionally approved treatment for parvo – Elanco’s Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody.
