We all fly here and there at some time, don’t we? Airline travel is a wondrous advancement in human progress that we often take for granted. It was just 120 years ago, on December 17, 1903, that the Wright Brothers of Dayton, Ohio mastered the air with a controlled, powered flight in what we now know as an “aircraft” on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Fast forward: in 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration estimates that each day there will be 45,000 flights scheduled with an estimated 2.9 million passengers moving across 29 million square miles of airspace in the U.S. At this rate, some 10 million people will fly point-to-point each year in the domestic skies and across oceans to their destinations!

With this amazing progress comes considerable environmental consequences. Writing in the Atmospheric Environment journal, a group of scholars in January 2021 posited that global aviation is helping to warm the Earth’s surface via complex processes such as emitting CO2, NOX, water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increased cloudiness resulting from contrails formation.

By some estimates, aviation operations overall contribute 2.5% of CO2 emissions and 3.5% of total impacts on climate when counting non-CO2 impacts. In 2018, global aviation had 1 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions according to OurWorldinData.org.

Solutions to reduce those impacts remain quite hard to achieve – such as de-carbonizing when considering aircraft design and manufacture, flight operations procedures, and types of fuel used.

But there is some good news – aircraft manufacturers and airline operators in particular are trying to reduce emissions.

Writing in the authoritative industry publication Air Transport World, Linda Blachly points out that the global airline industry association, IATA, has set a collective “aspirational” goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 5% by 2030 by using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). (Note that 100-plus nations are members of IATA.)

At Boeing, a major aircraft builder with 145,000 employees in 65 countries, a new Chief Sustainability Officer was named in December. He is Brian Moran, who has been with Boeing for over 20 years and was formerly VP-Global Sustainability Policy and Partnerships, managing projects such as the development of SAF. His new assigned mission: elevate Boeing’s focus to enable the company to achieve a more sustainable future.

Consider his company’s challenges: the aviation industry is aiming for net-zero in carbon emissions by 2050. Short-term, Boeing has a road map in place to reach a 55% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and achieving 100% renewable energy use by 2030.

Meantime, short term Boeing is dealing with a serious crisis in the grounding of all 737-Max9 narrow body aircraft due to the Alaskan Airlines incident in January when a door flew off. Boeing’s CEO was quoted by CNN as being “devastated” and “emotional” by the news. Despite this bad news, Boeing had a banner year in 2023 with almost 1,500 aircraft orders added to its backlog. The current B-737 version is the fourth generation since production began in 1968.

As with other societal advances, in global aviation there are positive achievements to cheer and unwelcome consequences that are necessary to address. The climate change crisis presents myriad challenges for industry leaders and policy makers. Welcome to the 15th edition of the Tetra Pak Index, which focuses on what consumers see as the future of health and nutrition. Having experienced an unprecedented global pandemic, today’s consumers are more focused on health than ever, and are more demanding of their food and beverages. At the same time, the industry is investing heavily to meet their evolving needs and capture the opportunities they present, while also addressing the pressing sustainability challenges. As a result, we are now in an exciting phase, with a number of promising technologies generating ‘new food’ innovations like never before.

Modern consumers are quite well-aware of the changes going on around them. They see technology as key to a healthier, more sustainable and more equitable future. But there are concerns to be navigated, with some becoming wary of innovation, desiring products that are as natural as possible.

Interest in preventive health measures and holistic wellness continues to be strong, driving appetite for healthy products and those with specific benefits, notably immunity boosters. Mental health is a major focus: three-quarters of consumers now say that it’s as important as physical health – and more than four in five choose products to support it.

In general, consumers are paying far more attention to what they eat and drink – and are feeling better as a result. Sugar is the number one food concern, with consumers, regulators and industry all taking steps to reduce its consumption. Personalisation is on the rise, as brands invest heavily in tailored solutions for narrower consumer groups, particularly around age and medical conditions. There are exciting possibilities for probiotics products – also known as functional foods – that may help to reduce the risk of serious illnesses, such as cancer and Alzheimer.

Value and price are paramount, as consumers everywhere struggle with the cost-of-living crisis. Many worry that this will limit their access to healthy food, but they are determined not to give this up. There is continued high interest in organic and natural food, and almost half of consumers now strive to be flexitarian or to exclude meat altogether. While in some cases, higher price points have cooled the demand for plant-based protein alternatives, the longer-term forecasts for such products remain strong.

Climate change and other environmental issues continue to be pressing concerns and are increasingly interlinked with health. Two-thirds of consumers now say that environmental factors impact health, and even more believe that healthy products should not harm the environment. Packaging is part of the picture: sustainable products should go in sustainable packages – such as those that use renewable and/or recycled materials with a low carbon impact, are recyclable and help reduce food waste. Many believe that the food and beverage choices they make can result in a positive difference; more than half say that by changing their diet they can contribute to a better world.

In many parts of the world, people still rely on products such as milk and juices for their daily nutrition, so it is critical to optimise their value chain with innovations in sourcing, packaging, processing and distribution, which is where we have been playing an active role together with our customers and suppliers.

In addition, considering that the world will need 60% more food by 2050, we need to complement these efforts through technologies that can help explore new sources of nutrition – ranging from new plant-based sources to alternative proteins produced with biomass and precision fermentation. Both these areas are critical to contribute towards food system1 sustainability.

For decades, we have been working towards building resilient and sustainable food value chains that improve livelihoods, reduce environmental impact, and ultimately, help provide healthy diets to the global community. Our latest Index shows plenty of examples of our recent work, including how we reduce food waste and climate impact; converting low-value side streams from food production into new ingredients; alternative protein; fermentation-derived proteins; and collaborations with start-ups that are providing technological solutions to some of the issues affecting global food systems today.

“When I started in HR, I knew I’d found my calling. I had an opportunity to do rotational assignments to learn about the different functions within HR, and with each rotation, my enthusiasm grew.”

Plews started as a technical recruiter. Over the years, she has served in a range of capacities of increasing responsibility supporting CACI’s employees around the country as senior HR Business Partner Manager to serving as HR Director for the company’s corporate functions. Each experience has prepared Plews for her current role as the driving force behind the transformative power of inclusion at CACI.

Plews ensures that CACI’s programs, processes, and practices are aligned to CACI’s DEI strategy, enabling progress at every level of the organization. Covia Cares Action Days

In addition to individual volunteering efforts, our community outreach efforts through our Covia Cares Action Days continued to grow over the past year. These Action Days were created to encourage Covia facilities to plan local volunteer activities in their communities. Covia facilities mobilized for 34 Action Days in 2023, an increase from the previous year as participating plants expanded their efforts and new locations joined the effort. The combined initiatives led to more than 1,000 volunteer hours, with efforts ranging from stuffing teddy bears to participating in a walk for cancer.

Stories that Inspire: Teddy Bear Delivery

Team Members at the Covia Headquarters in Independence, Ohio, brought in unstuffed teddy bears that they assembled to send to children at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital as well as nonprofits United Way, Cornerstone of Hope, and A Kid Again. While this was originally planned as a Covia Cares Action “Day”, it turned into a three-week project where Team Members stuffed nearly 400 teddy bears. Visiting Team Members from Covia Mexico stopped by the office during that period and ended up lending a helping hand. The team from Mexico was so inspired that they took the idea to their plants and stuffed even more teddy bears for charities and hospitals in their area.

Stories that Inspire: Lymphoma & Leukemia Light the Night Walk

In October 2023, Team Members from Covia’s Tuscaloosa Plant gathered to participate in the annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) ‘Light the Night’ walk in Birmingham, Alabama, to celebrate and remember those affected by blood cancers. Gina Laney, the location’s office administrator, planned and organized the walk for the plant, helping to raise nearly $3,000 for blood cancer research. Team Members at the plant joined the walk to support Gina, a Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer survivor. This moving event lit up Railroad Park to honor those battling blood cancers. Gold signified remembrance, red was for supporters, and white was for survivors. It was a beautiful and impactful night that attendees won’t soon forget.

One teen didn’t think she was “brainy” enough for science. Another was insecure because he didn’t know how to code when he joined the team.

But both found a place on a youth community robotics team based at the Telus World of Science—Edmonton (TWOSE), the local science center. And it’s lucky they did; it’s youths like these who will use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to solve humanity’s most complex problems—and change the world.

TWOSE launched its program eight years ago to fill the gap for students in Grades 7 through 12 whose schools in Edmonton, Alberta, didn’t have robotics clubs. In spite of its humble beginnings, the team was selected to represent Canada at the FIRST® Global Robotics Challenge in Singapore from Oct. 7 to 10.

Competing at the international level “is something they never really thought was possible,” says Jennifer Gemmell, a TWOSE staff scientist and robotics team lead.

The chance to attend the global competition only comes around every decade. In Canada, provinces take turns selecting the team that will represent the country at the international, Olympics-style event.

“It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Gemmell adds.

In Singapore, the TWOSE group collaboratively competed alongside teams from 192 countries and autonomous states, working together to complete tasks that required robotics and STEM skills to solve. This year’s challenges centered on the theme of renewable, clean energy; participants were prompted to think creatively to reimagine the future of energy and envision more sustainable ways to power our planet.

At Enbridge, supporting the education of youth is one of the ways we empower the next generation to become STEM innovators. The ingenuity of youth will help build vibrant, sustainable communities and allow us to continue to develop clean, renewable energy sources.

We’ve supported FIRST® Robotics Canada teams and competitions in Ontario since 2013; since 2021, we’ve provided $210,000 in Fueling Futures grants to FIRST® Robotics in that province. This year, we also supported the youth robotics community with a $20,000 contribution to help cover the TWOSE team’s participation at the global competition. As presenting sponsor for the team, we were proud to help showcase Canadian STEM innovation on the world stage.

TWOSE is using the momentum of its participation in Singapore to expand the robotics program. This fall, they launched two new teams—one for Grades 4 to 6, and another for Grades 7 to 9.

“We’re trying to create a scaffolded experience where students can build their skills year after year,” Gemmell explains. “This will prepare them to pursue whatever career they’d like in STEM.”

To date, 100% of youth participants in TWOSE have entered STEM-related fields of study in post-secondary school, and 90% have chosen to pursue engineering or a subject related to the skills they developed while on the robotics team.

“It’s amazing,” Gemmell says. “The robotics team is using all of the same tools and skills needed to pursue robotics as a professional.”

She adds: “These are transferable skills they’re learning.”

The life-changing STEM journey begins when students say “yes” to joining the TWOSE team, no matter their experience with science, coding, or robotics.

Remarks Gemmell: “If you give youth opportunities like this, they are more likely to pursue careers in STEM—because they’ll have the confidence to believe they can do it.”

VPPA will add 200GWh of new green generation to the mainland Europe grid through two solar projectsPower from the new solar sites will cover 50% of GSK’s electricity consumption across Europe, contributing to the decarbonization of healthcare systems

MADRID, Spain, February 27, 2024 /3BL/ – Schneider Electric, the global leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) between global biopharma company GSK and IGNIS, a Spanish integrated renewable energy group. This agreement will facilitate the supply of 200 GWh of renewable electricity certificates per year, representing an estimated 72,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, from new solar sites to GSK sites across mainland Europe. Generating 200 GWh of renewable electricity is equivalent to powering approximately 32,900 European households for a year1.

GSK will fulfill approximately 50% of its total electricity demand in mainland Europe from the VPPA for 12 years, starting from mid-2026. GSK’s footprint in mainland Europe includes 11 manufacturing sites, six R&D sites, as well as its commercial operations, employing around 24,000 people.

The two solar projects in central Spain will be constructed by IGNIS specifically for this VPPA, bringing additional renewable energy generation to the mainland European grid. Schneider Electric Sustainability Business managed the go-to-market strategy, conducted project evaluation of the bids received and advised during the PPA negotiation phase.

Healthcare systems globally account for roughly 5% of all emissions, with more than half of these emissions being created in manufacturing supply chains2. Renewable electricity deals like this are part of how GSK is working to deliver on its ambitious sustainability targets, and to reduce the environmental impact of developing and manufacturing medicines and vaccines.

GSK is committed to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across all scopes by 2030 and a 90% reduction by 2045, from a 2020 baseline. This includes a commitment as part of the RE100 initiative to 100% imported renewable electricity by 2025 and 100% renewable electricity (imported and generated) by 2030. VPPAs are one way for companies to increase the use of renewable electricity, alongside onsite renewables and energy efficiency.

“It’s clear that climate change is already having a negative impact on human health. Alongside this commitment to renewable electricity in its operations, GSK through Energize, a program to increase the adoption of renewable electricity within the supply chain, is enabling its suppliers to take action to reduce their emissions. The program has 20 sponsor companies from the pharmaceutical sector, with 560 registered suppliers who can access a renewable energy educational platform and can elect to aggregate their electricity demand to have access to more impactful renewable energy options like the VPPA announced above.

In honor of Kohler Co.’s 150th anniversary in 2023, our Kohler China team announced a five-year commitment to supporting 150 bathroom improvements across rural China.

In partnership with the Shanghai Charity Foundation, the program will provide safe, comfortable, and water-saving bathroom products to rural areas in Yunnan Province, along with installation guidance and ongoing maintenance support. In its early stages, the rural revitalization efforts have prioritized schools, hospitals, and health centers.

Since the launch in mid-2023, Kohler China teams have completed installations at six hospitals, with another seven hospitals and six schools on track to be done in April 2024.

In a rural town in New York, a 6th-grade boy has just finished working through the Engineering Design Process and reflects, “When I thought about engineering, I thought it was just building things, but I learned what a mechanical engineer did and now that’s what I want to be.”

Through the Qualcomm® Thinkabit Lab™, youth engage in hands-on activities to build circuits like electrical engineers, code like computer scientists, and build an invention prototype like mechanical engineers. Since 2014, the program has reached more than 100,000 youth across 24 school districts, universities, and nonprofits. Now, thanks to STEM Next and its Million Girls Moonshot, Qualcomm, Inc. is collaborating with afterschool and summer programs throughout the country.

In collaboration with Qualcomm, Inc. STEM Next leveraged the Thinkabit Lab curriculum and organized training with out-of-school time (OST) programs in New York, Indiana, and Wisconsin to provide students with a unique experience and exposure to STEM careers they may not have known existed. Of the students served, from seven different program sites, over half reported that they will continue to pursue a career in STEM.

The Thinkabit Lab also provides an opportunity for STEM educators to learn best practices for engaging student. Educators were trained by Qualcomm employees, supplied with accompanying STEM kits, and provided implementation and evaluation support throughout the process. The collaboration leverages the experiential learning environments found in OST and meaningfully integrates quality STEM programming with youth who need it most.

Areas with few STEM opportunities were prioritized in the Thinkabit Lab implementation, and the experiences did not disappoint. “As always when working with youth, those “lightbulb” moments are always great to see – once they (students) were able to successfully make the light blink or get the fan to spin, their pride was instant!” said a Wisconsin educator. “It was also cool to see some of the quieter kids step out of their shells and help others after they had gotten the hang of it.”

Near Clarkson University in New York, one dedicated teacher drove over 60 miles to a small rural town to teach the Thinkabit Lab curriculum. “It is worth the drive because I get to share my passion with young students who have never done stuff like this,” said the educator. “The greatest moment for me was when my students plugged in their Arduino (an open-sourced electronic prototyping platform), uploaded the code, and saw their LED blinking or servo moving. I could see their sense of accomplishment and pride in successfully doing the build and uploading the code, and it made me happy to see it come to fruition. I know it made them happy because I witnessed that “a-ha” moment in them. It was truly special.”

Skills building to overcome barriers is part of the Thinkabit Lab curriculum and has contributed to student and program success. In fact, 80% of the participating youth reported positive changes in their ability to persevere.[1]

“Many students were quick to frustration when they ran into a roadblock or error in their codes (in the world of instant gratification and information, this is normal for them). We had to do some extra coaxing to encourage them to continue to try instead of walking away – resilience is a trait we have been working extra hard on,” said the instructor.

The Thinkabit Lab program is paving the way for students to pursue a career in STEM, and resilience is part of that process. “I am excited every week and always wondering what we will get to build next, ” says a 5th-grade girl in Wisconsin. Thanks to the Qualcomm, Inc. / STEM Next collaboration, she and thousands of other girls can continue to build a brighter future.
