February 27, 2024 /3BL/ – To help address the persistent power challenges faced by tribal communities across the United States, Direct Relief today unveiled an initial $10 million funding commitment that will provide grants to bolster health facilities’ energy resilience and enhance care for patients who rely on them.

This new $10 million commitment is a focused expansion on tribal communities of Direct Relief’s Power for Health initiative. The initiative provides philanthropic support to ensure resilient power and operational continuity for nonprofit health facilities in high-risk-of-outage areas to ensure critical services are maintained, including during weather-related emergencies in which health risks are heightened.

Healthcare services are highly dependent on power being available to access electronic health records, maintain medications that require refrigeration, operate basic diagnostic equipment, and keep the lights on. The Power for Health initiative already has provided funding of $44 million to support resilient power for 130 projects globally, including at 56 U.S. nonprofit clinics and health centers.

“Direct Relief has seen the increasingly common situation of power losses during emergencies leaving safety-net health facilities unable to function and provide care when needed most for patients without other options. Many tribal communities face intensified health risks due to already limited health care access as well as power availability, high energy costs, and more frequent outages,” said Thomas Tighe, Direct Relief CEO.

The $10 million investment is aimed specifically at achieving several objectives:

Operational Continuity: Helping ensure that tribal health centers can continue to provide essential services during power outages.Economic Relief: Alleviating the burden of energy costs that weigh down on health facilities, making healthcare provision more sustainable. StrengthenedHealthcare Safety Nets: Fortifying healthcare infrastructure within tribal communities.

The critical need for investment in resilient energy infrastructure on tribal lands is underscored by findings from a recent Department of Energy report, which sheds light on the acute electricity access and reliability challenges confronting tribal areas that are further compounded by the escalating threat of climate change-induced weather events.

According to the report:

“Climate-related threats to Tribal infrastructure are expected to increase in frequency and severity under future climate scenarios, thus being highly vulnerable to impacts associated with climate change. These climate change vulnerabilities have motivated Indian Tribes to explore options for distributed clean energy solutions.”

Other key findings from the report include:

Tribal communities experience 6.5 times more power outages than the broader United States.10 percent of on-reservation households spend more than 20 percent of their income on energy, while the average U.S. household spends less than 3 percent. The Department of Energy – Office of Indian Energy is only able to fund 30 percent of tribal project applications. Seventy percent of proposed projects are unable to be funded.

Direct Relief’s commitment to tribal clean energy is a response to this urgent need, aiming to mitigate these challenges through sustainable and resilient power solutions.

As a purely philanthropic initiative, grants are provided to cover the full costs of designing and installing solar and battery systems, which are then owned and maintained by the recipient tribal health organization. All financial benefits accrue to the recipient organizations.

“Direct Relief recognizes that many creative financing options exist for solar and battery projects in the U.S., but we believe this is a very strong case for philanthropic support and a compelling value-for-money proposition to enhance health services for people facing tough circumstances,” said Tighe. “The basic difference is the same as between a student loan and a scholarship – both are ways to pay for college, but one is paid back, and the other is not. Direct Relief’s approach is that of scholarship, not a loan, which we believe is appropriate for a charitable organization.”

Kimberly-Clark’s Kotex®, creator of the period care category, is marking International Women’s Day (March 8) by releasing eye-opening data from a study around how women worldwide feel about progress. Kotex uncovered that nearly 60% of women believe that the speed of women’s progress is either stagnant or moving slowly. Half of the women polled indicated that the world is a more uncomfortable place for them than ever before. Furthermore, the study showed that these sentiments are relatively stronger among the younger generation. With this data top of mind, Kotex is launching its #ProgressFeelsLike effort to speak to this serious threat and encourage women around the world to have a voice and share their view of what progress is like in their daily lives and in the world around them.

“In a long history of advancement of women’s rights and equality, today we are reminded that progress isn’t a given,” said Alison Lewis, chief growth officer at Kimberly-Clark. “Now is a crucial time for women everywhere to use their voices to inspire change, and we are pleased to offer a platform to share what #ProgressFeelsLike from their viewpoint. On International Women’s Day and every day, #ProgressFeelsLike unites us and empowers us in our pursuit of progress across every culture and every country in the world. Because period or not, She Can.”

To help show the world what #ProgressFeelsLike, Kotex is debuting a provocative film produced by an all-female Kotex team in partnership with Captial A Creative and Rakish, led by renowned director, Jaci Judelson. The powerful #ProgressFeelsLike film speaks to the data unearthed in Kotex’s study. It depicts the reality around the globe that women face bias related to inequality, their periods and other restrictions, which continue to challenge or hinder progress.

Kotex is encouraging women worldwide to participate in the movement by using #ProgressFeelsLike in social media posts. The period care brand is also organizing on-the-ground activations to ignite conversation and inspire change for women within their communities. Examples include:

In Turkey, Kotex is increasing its commitment to women’s progress to ensure a more comfortable world where women can express themselves freely and break menstrual taboos. For every tweet using #ProgressFeelsLike in Turkey, the Kotex team will make a matching product donation to non-profit women’s organizations. In Brazil, Kotex is launching a digital art festival to visually depict what #ProgressFeelsLike and to celebrate women’s achievements, question the stigmas around menstruation, and show that women haven’t come this far to stop here.In the US, U by Kotex will donate two period products to Alliance for Period Supplies from the purchase of any U by Kotex product purchased at Walmart during March 2024. U by Kotex will also donate two additional period products to APS for each repost of its social media post for National Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, to drive awareness of period poverty, an issue that impacts one in three low-income women in the US.In Vietnam, Kotex is launching a music video that calls for consumers to submit entries that speak to what #ProgressFeelsLike when it comes to chasing their dreams. The top three winners will receive a $5,000 scholarship to make their ideas a reality.

As part of the #ProgressFeelsLike movement, Kotex is leading by example and has formed a new partnership with She’s the First, a non-profit organization that fights for a world where every girl can choose her own future. As a part of the partnership with She’s the First, Kotex is standing behind its pledge to progress and donating funds to help support the organization’s mission to make sure girls everywhere are respected, educated and heard. The #ProgressFeelsLike movement and new alliance with She’s the First is an extension of Kotex’s She Can Initiative and existing work with Plan International and WASH United. The three partnerships align with Kotex’s ongoing mission to champion women’s progress by fighting period stigmas and the barriers they cause, by promoting access to education in schools and communities and by helping to open doors so women gain equal opportunity.

Marathon Petroleum’s Neal Pit Wildlife Habitat has reopened after a tornado destroyed the popular nature reserve in Crawford County, Illinois, in the spring of 2023.Employee volunteers from Marathon Petroleum’s Robinson refinery worked with members of the community to rebuild the site, which sits on 80 acres in nearby Palestine, Illinois. To celebrate, Marathon hosted a Nature Day in late 2023 and welcomed visitors back to the reserve for the first time since the tornado.

An EF-3 tornado with top wind speeds of 155 miles per hour swept across Crawford County, Illinois, in March 2023, destroying Marathon Petroleum’s Neal Pit Wildlife Habitat. A year later, the habitat, which is certified through the Wildlife Habitat Council, is welcoming visitors again.

The 80-acre site operated by Marathon’s Robinson refinery was left unrecognizable after the tornado. Refinery employees volunteered and spent months putting the popular nature reserve for local schools and members of the community back together and rebuilding the structures on the property that were destroyed.

“This is such a special spot for so many in our community and beyond, so when the tornado left it in ruins, we knew we had to work quickly to ensure its future,” said Amy Macak, General Manager at the Robinson refinery. “Although the tornado’s impacts are still being felt here, seeing our employees and neighbors continue to work together to rebuild what we lost is a truly special feeling.”

At end of 2023, the refinery hosted a Nature Day for 125 students from Washington Grade School in Robinson.

“It felt so good to see so many happy faces again,” said Emily Gullett, Administrative Assistant at the Robinson refinery. “Many of these kids, like so many of us, experienced some kind of loss last year. Being able to provide some sense of normalcy and a space for them to experience nature felt good for all of us.”

Neal Pit is one of Marathon Petroleum’s 16 certified habitats, which in total covers nearly 1,000 acres. Marathon has a nearly 30-year partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council, whose certification program is the only voluntary sustainability standard designed for broad-based biodiversity enhancement and conservation activities on corporate landholdings.

Taco Bell blog

Black History Month started off as a one-week celebration founded by Carter G. Woodson in February 1926. Fifty years later, the week was extended into a month dedicated to honoring Black American history.

This year’s nationwide Black History Month’s focus is African Americans and the Arts, detailing African American artistic and cultural movements.

To celebrate our Black team members and these communities, we will share some of their stories. Get ready to be inspired, get involved and continue learning and celebrating the culture and achievements of the Black community.

Kim E. (She/Her)– Shift Lead, Taco Bell Corp.

Kim knew she wanted to become an educator from the very beginning.

When Kim came to high school, she became a facilitator in her school’s first summer camp program. However, she found herself in some hard situations which made her realize that she was nowhere near becoming a teacher. This made her give up her dream of teaching.

Over the years, Kim worked in several different spaces that she thought would bring her happiness. It wasn’t until she found Taco Bell in 2017 when this became true. During the first couple months, Kim spent time having fun with her team, doing competitions to see who could wrap the best tacos or produce an order the fastest. When October came around, Kim was asked to become a Shift Lead.

“I was wary in the beginning because of the responsibility that came with this position. Working at Taco Bell was supposed to be a job where I could do the work, have fun and then go home. That didn’t last long as I took a leap of faith and became a Shift Lead.”

After becoming a Shift Lead, Kim thought her life was as good as it got. Then came the opportunity to fulfill Kim’s dream of becoming a teacher.

“Last year, I was granted an opportunity to further my education through Guild, the education and skilling program offered as a Taco Bell Benefit to corporate restaurant employees. I will be graduating with my Bachelor’s of Science in Education Studies from Wilmington University in 2024.”

Thanks to Guild, Kim works at Taco Bell and pursues her passion for education at the same time. One thing she loves to do is bring new perspectives into the classroom setting. Especially during Black History Month, Kim encourages her students to research and educate their peers about Black Heritage.

“Black History Month is a time of reflection and to think of what my impact on this earth will be for future generations. I celebrate it in many ways, one being in my classroom where I encourage my students to pick a field and to do research on an African American who had influence in that field. In this process, I learn more about my heritage as well!”

Being enrolled in a program through Guild also gave Kim the opportunity to be part of a corporate mentorship program at The Bell where she was assigned mentor Leslie P., Associate Manager of Menu Operations. Throughout the mentorship program, Leslie helped Kim transform her outlook and find a path moving forward.

“Leslie made me realize that it did not matter what my situation was. If there was a goal in sight, we could achieve it together. She showed me the different areas of growth throughout the company and shared stories of people who were similar to me and still found their own path.”

For Kim, this journey has given her the confidence to do anything she sets her mind to.

“This journey allowed me to see that If I can dream it, I can achieve it. Upon onboarding, we have a training that teaches us the Taco Bell core Brand Values. Leslie showed me that these values are not only applicable to how we act with our customers and team members, but evident in our personal lives too. Live Más is everywhere and with anything.”

Looking to the future, Kim hopes to motivate others to persevere through the tough times and be their authentic self.

“My advice would be to be Authentically YOU. I never thought I’d get to a point where I could envision a future, a brighter future for myself or for my family. However, I am thankful that Taco Bell took a chance on me to show the heart and soul of the Live Más culture.”
