IBM will increase investment in the IBM Sustainability Accelerator by 50%, committing up to $45 million in cash and in-kind donations over the next five years.New RFP will align with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11: making cities safe, resilient and sustainable.IBM will collaborate with the EY organization to strengthen the opportunities and knowledge support available to program participants.

ARMONK, N.Y., March 6, 2024 /3BL/ – Aligned with United Nations SDG 11, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today a new request for proposals from government and non-profit organizations for the IBM Sustainability Accelerator, focused on technology-driven projects to advance city resiliency. IBM also announced that it would increase investment in the pro-bono social impact program by 50%, committing to make up to $45 million in cash and in-kind donations of technology and services available over the next five years. The IBM Sustainability Accelerator applies IBM technology, including IBM watsonx, an AI and data platform and AI assistants, to support populations vulnerable to environmental threats around the world, with a new RFP and sustainability topic announced each year.

UN Habitat1 forecasts that the world will continue to urbanize over the next three decades, with the share of people living in urban areas increasing from 56 percent in 2021 to 68 percent by 2050. The disproportionate impacts of climate change can challenge capacity for sustainable urban development and planning, as cities around the world work to address priorities like emissions levels, intensifying climate risks, environmental justice and more.

“After three years working to improve lives and uplift vulnerable communities around the world, we’re proud to recognize the success of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator by strengthening both our impact and our investment in the program,” said Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM Vice President and Chief Impact Officer. “We look forward to working with a new cohort of partners to transform the cities we live in, and to deploy solutions that harness the potential of artificial intelligence to build a more resilient future.”

This year, the program will introduce a new strategic collaboration with EY to strengthen the participant experience and amplify the impact of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator. EY will contribute to the resilient cities cohort by providing support during the RFP selection process, organizational development coaching from EY teams, and capacity-building workshops that will build upon the leadership development and professional mentoring opportunities available to program participants.

The evaluation and selection criteria for the global RFP will consider applicants’ level of support to communities especially vulnerable to urban environmental threats; the feasibility and sustainability of proposed technology solutions for climate change mitigation; and applicants’ transparency on measurement and reporting, among other considerations.

Nonprofit and government initiatives focused on city resiliency and urban climate adaptation can apply to the RFP beginning March 6, 2024, until the end of the submission window on April 30, 2024. Selected participants will be announced later in the year.

Questions about the IBM Sustainability Accelerator program and the new RFP can be directed to sustainability.accelerator@ibm.com.

The Kentucky-based National Farm Machinery Show featured next-level announcements from Case IH, a brand of CNH, which continues to drive purposeful solutions for producers. Building on the legacy of Axial-Flow® and Steiger®, Case IH not only showcased the recently unveiled AF11 and the next generation corn head, designed to match its capacity, but also introduced Quadtrac® Heavy Duty Suspension for Steigers. These machines up the ante in track technology.

“We know that farmers are looking to pick corn faster, cleaner and with as little downtime as possible,” says Leo Bose, harvesting segment lead for Case IH. “When paired with an Axial-Flow combine, like the AF11, this durable corn head will deliver maximized capacity and throughput.”

In addition to leadership in harvesting, Case IH once again sets the bar in track technology with the introduction of the Quadtrac Heavy-Duty Suspension (HDS), optional for model year 2025.

“We have significantly reduced vibrations felt in the cab for the operator, while also improving efficiency and performance in the field through a larger drive wheel and longer track,” says Morgen Deitrich, tractor segment lead for Case IH. “Building hydraulic suspension into our Quadtracs was the next evolution for Steiger tractors. It comes down to being purposeful in how we deliver solutions to our customers, whether it be comfort, maintenance or just overall experience.”

Attendance at the National Farm Machinery Show demonstrates CNH’s commitment to innovating in precision tech for a more sustainable future for farmers in North America and around the globe.

FedEx has been a longtime supporter of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), providing annual support of the TMCF Leadership Institute and Recruitment Fair and the continued college education of multiple TMCF member-school students through scholarships. Since TMCF member-school students are mostly first-generation to attend college (52 percent) and overwhelmingly come from low-income families (over 72 percent are Pell Grant eligible, and 97 percent apply for some type of financial aid), scholarship assistance is a critical resource for ensuring that students both continue their education and graduate from college. Without this aid, even the best of students are challenged to make ends meet and continue their education – even those earning good grades.

Over the past two years TMCF has collaborated with the FedEx NFL Air & Ground program to provide needs-based scholarships through the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school year at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

New research from leading valuation firm Brand Finance, in association with CSRHub and the International Advertising Association (IAA), indicates that the world’s biggest brands are missing out on billions of dollars of potential value by failing to properly communicate their sustainability achievements and progress.

Brand Finance’s Sustainability Perceptions Index is based on a study of over 150,000 respondents across 40 countries. Key outputs include:

the role of sustainability in driving choice in each industrythe brands that global consumers believe are most committed to sustainabilitythe financial value of a reputation for sustainabilitythe value at risk, or value to be gained, arising from a gap between sustainability perceptions and performance

Apple has the highest sustainability perceptions value of any brand, USD33.3 billion. This huge sum is driven by a combination of Apple’s financial scale and supportive consumer perception. Actual sustainability performance aside, our research shows that consumers have clear confidence that Apple is committed enough to minimising its negative impacts for them continue buying and paying a premium for its products.

Microsoft has the second highest total value (USD22.7billion), along with the highest ‘gap value’ of any brand in the index – USD3.2 billion. Microsoft has engaged extensively in sustainability initiatives, including committing to becoming carbon neutral, water positive, and zero waste by 2030. Yet its communication of its commitment and progress has been somewhat muted. The implication of this is that with concerted effort to communicate its sustainability achievements more effectively, Microsoft could add over USD3 billion of value for shareholders.

Microsoft is not alone in leaving value on the table in this way – 85 brands have a positive gap value of over USD100 million, totalling USD25 billion.

At the other end of the spectrum is Tesla. Tesla is well known as a pioneer of the electric vehicles and battery technology aiding the transition to a lower-carbon economy. This image has carried across into the sustainability perceptions held by global consumers. Tesla is seen in several countries, including Mexico and the UK, as the brand with the greatest commitment to environmental sustainability. However, the strength of this perception creates its own risk; whilst Tesla performs fairly well on perceived sustainability, it falls significantly short of peer average on sustainability performance. As a result, Tesla has USD1.5 billion of value at risk.

Brand Finance’s Strategy & Sustainability Director, Robert Haigh, commented, “Brands have to strike a fine balance when communicating about sustainability. Consumers are now rightly attuned to potential greenwashing; in response, brands are becoming too precautionary and restrictive in their approach to sustainability communications. This greenhushing could reduce the incentive for competitors to improve their performance, slowing progress industry-wide. Just as importantly, these brands are letting financial go to waste, short-changing shareholders and other stakeholders in the process.”

Bahar Gidwani, Cofounder and CTO of CSRHub, commented, “This study shows how critical it is for corporate strategists and brand managers to understand how their firms are perceived by a broad array of expert sustainability-oriented stakeholders. CSRHub provides transparent access to consensus ESG ratings data to help companies improve their corporate ESG performance and realize their full value potential.”

Dagmara Szulce Managing Director, IAA Global, commented, “We see this as an incredibly potent tool to incentivize action that aligns with the UN SDGs and wider aims of the UN Global Compact. By highlighting the financial value that is contingent on sustainability perceptions, we hope to harness businesses’ profit motive, moving them past the point where they see sustainability as a ‘hygiene factor’, to a point of rapid, concerted action.”

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 5, 2024 /3BL/ – Antea Group consultants Natalya Holm, PE, and Logan St. John collaborated with the American Bar Association (ABA) to give their insights on the overallocation of water resources in the Colorado River Basin, exacerbated by climate change impacts. The article, titled “Regulating Resilience: Climate-Water Dynamics in the Colorado River Basin,” was published by the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources.

Holm and St. John write in the article that, “the Colorado River Basin is the largest and most crucial water resource in the American Southwest… However, water has been steadily disappearing from the Colorado River Basin over the last century. The consistent loss of Colorado River water became the subject of public concern in August 2021 when the Bureau of Reclamation declared the first ever water shortage on the Colorado River.”

They go on to note that since its inception of the Colorado River Compact in 1922, the Colorado River has been overallocated and the Compact promised more water than the river could actually deliver. Now, climate change is exacerbating water scarcity in the Colorado River Basin, and to correct that, there needs to be a systemic transformation of water management practices informed by science.

Holm and St. John emphasize that, “There is no single solution to suddenly produce enough water to satisfy all demand within the basin. Alleviating water scarcity requires the combination of implementing scientifically supported conservation approaches and holistic management.”

Through transforming water management practices in this basin, lessons learned from the process can be applied to other critical basins in the United States and across the globe.
