When J. Mason Davis Jr. first met Houston Brown, he noticed there was something special about the young law clerk. In the years since, Davis’ gut instinct proved dead on.

“A great judge, solid person, good citizen … and just a solid man,” said Davis, shareholder at Dentons Sirote and former History in Motion honoree, describing his former clerk, partner and friend.

And similar words were echoed by everyone who spoke of Judge Houston Brown at the recent Regions Bank History in Motion celebration in Birmingham, Alabama: a man with integrity, a role model and mentor, with an innate ability to work with all kinds of individuals and bring people together.

For the past 15 years, Regions Bank has concluded Black History Month with its History in Motion event, which celebrates past, present and future leaders and the contributions they’ve made to our communities and our nation.

“Never let anyone else tell your story.” Judge Houston Brown

This year’s honoree has certainly led a remarkable life of leadership and commitment, which is even more extraordinary considering the challenges he faced early in life.

Brown grew up in Birmingham and remembers his early childhood fondly.

“It was a good time to be a child,” he says. “We had lots of love and attention at home, in the community and at church.” But he also remembered becoming aware of racial tension when he was around 11 years old. Segregation, enforced by Jim Crow laws, created difficult times in the city.

Brown recalled three events from his youth that changed the trajectory of his life.

The first was attending the 1963 March on Washington, where Brown said he became emotional as Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke. Immediately after witnessing that moving and inspiring speech, he came back to Alabama and the house across the street from where he lived with his parents, the home of civil rights attorney Arthur D. Shores, was bombed. Against the orders of local police on the scene he ran across the street, determined to get inside and check on his neighbors.

Two weeks later, four little girls were killed in the horrific bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. Two of the girls were very close family friends – “like extended family,” Brown said – and that violent tragedy made a huge impact on the young man.

“It was the most heinous example of hatred – pure hatred and evil – that has happened to me, personally, in my entire life,” he said.

Brown said that he knew right then he had to contribute something positive to his community. So, he decided to go into law.

He was the first Black student to be awarded the Juris Doctor degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham.

“I didn’t set out to make a mark, I didn’t set out to be unique in any way,” he said. “But I set out, with whatever I did, to try to do the very best that I could.”

Brown practiced law for 27 years, forming firms Davis and Brown and then Brown, Chappel and Burrell. In 2000, he was appointed to Circuit Judge in the Tenth Judicial Circuit of Alabama, and 13 years later was elected as presiding Circuit Court Judge. He was the first Black judge to hold that position.

In those years of private practice and then on the bench, he earned a reputation for being a calming force, always balanced and fair, and a positive role model for young attorneys.

“He’s one to be a destiny changer,” said Barbara Shores, a lifelong friend of Brown and daughter of civil rights attorney Arthur D. Shores. “He’s made important decisions and worked on social justice issues. To see him from where he started, in the yard playing basketball, to being in the courts as a judge – we’re all very proud of him and the impact he’s had on the citizens of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.”

Along with his professional contributions, for which he holds numerous awards and recognitions, Brown has also dedicated much of his life in leadership positions with community and civic organizations. He noted that he is particularly proud of having been appointed to serve on the first Police-Community Relations Committee for the City of Birmingham, serving as a presenter for the first seminar in 1968.

Brown was a founding member of both the Alabama Lawyers Association and the Magic City Bar Association and was inducted in the Hall of Fame for both organizations.

As he reflected on the events he’s witnessed and the experiences of his life and career, he reiterated his personal philosophy of promoting understanding with honest conversation. Brown stressed the importance of keeping lessons learned in mind today, to avoid repeating our tragic history.

“We’ve got to talk to each other, and talk historically, truthfully, about what happened,” he said. “And never let anyone else tell your story.”

CALGARY, Alberta, March 6, 2024 /3BL/ – Enbridge Inc. (TSX: ENB) (NYSE: ENB) (Enbridge or the Company) and FortisBC Energy Inc. (FortisBC) announced funding, with contributions from the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, for their own respective studies to produce an integrated summary that will examine how hydrogen, a low-carbon energy source, can be safely and reliably delivered using the province’s existing gas pipeline infrastructure.

This hydrogen blending study will look at the percentage of hydrogen that can be safely transported through gas pipeline infrastructure, such as Enbridge’s Westcoast natural gas transmission system, as well as FortisBC’s gas transmission and distribution systems, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help develop a low-carbon energy economy. If upon completion it is determined that hydrogen can be safely transported in this infrastructure, the study will be used to inform the development of codes and standards to regulate its transportation and help to inform the development of a commercial hydrogen market in the province.

Enbridge’s Westcoast system operates more than 2,900 kilometres (km) of pipeline from the northeast of the province to the U.S.-Canada border and east to the B.C.-Alberta border. This pipeline system supplies natural gas to FortisBC’s approximately 51,000 km gas transmission and distribution system. The gas transported on these systems is ultimately used to heat homes, hospitals, businesses and schools.

B.C.’s gas infrastructure can play an important role in enabling the energy transition and providing people with the energy they need and use every day. As the energy transition progresses, the type of energy transported on this infrastructure can change to include more low-carbon and renewable sources. B.C. is well positioned to make this happen and has significant potential to produce the energy needed to transition to a low-carbon future that creates new opportunities for communities and Indigenous groups to participate in the energy transition.

Quotes

“Hydrogen is a renewable energy source that is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping the province transition to clean energy. By using existing infrastructure to transport this energy, we can reduce the number of trucks on B.C. highways and roads,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “This partnership study will also help to inform our regulatory standards going forward so that this clean energy can be transported efficiently and safely to the markets that need it.”

“At Enbridge, we are working hard to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon intensity of the energy we transport,” said Cynthia Hansen, Enbridge Executive Vice President and President, Gas Transmission and Midstream. “One way we’re doing this is by using our existing energy infrastructure to transport low-carbon forms of energy such as hydrogen. This important study will play a critical role in determining how existing energy infrastructure can be used to transport hydrogen and how we can continue to work to advance the energy transition.”

“FortisBC recognizes that we have a critical role to play in helping our customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing new energy options that can be delivered safely and reliably through our existing gas system,” said Roger Dall’Antonia, president and CEO at FortisBC. “Our long-term vision is to have hydrogen be part of our renewable and low-carbon gas supply, and collaboration with industry and government in research such as this is a pivotal step toward finding the safest way of making that vision a reality.”

About Enbridge

At Enbridge, we safely connect millions of people to the energy they rely on every day, fueling quality of life through our North American natural gas, oil and renewable power networks and our growing European offshore wind portfolio. We’re investing in modern energy delivery infrastructure to sustain access to secure, affordable energy and building on more than a century of operating conventional energy infrastructure and two decades of experience in renewable power. LOS ANGELES & DALLAS, MARCH 6, 2024 – Baby2Baby, a national nonprofit organization, and Huggies diapers are joining forces to provide crucial support to new mothers and babies with a program that will launch timed to Mother’s Day 2024. In an effort to address rising diaper need in America and combat the tragically rising maternal mortality rate, Huggies, through the Kimberly-Clark Foundation, has committed to tripling the reach and impact of Baby2Baby’s initiative with The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Through a multi-million-dollar grant including funds and an in-kind product donation of its diapers, wipes and postpartum pads the program will support maternal and infant health, particularly among vulnerable communities.

Originally announced by Vice President Kamala Harris at Baby2Baby’s Headquarters in Los Angeles, Baby2Baby funded a pilot program and distributed 3,000 Maternal Health and Newborn Supply kits through hospitals and community-based partner organizations across Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico – three states experiencing deep levels of family poverty and high maternal mortality rates. Now with the critical support of the Kimberly-Clark Foundation and Huggies, an additional 10,000 kits will be distributed across ten states this year, including the three pilot states and seven new states.

The kits contain items that are vital for the health and comfort of both mother and child including diapers, wipes, hygiene products, breastfeeding supplies, postpartum care and educational resources. These critical items also provide mental health support by alleviating the stress of meeting their baby’s most basic needs.

“Nearly half of all families in this country who need diapers cannot afford them,” said Baby2Baby Co-CEOs Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof. “Not being able to afford the items their babies need takes a profound toll on a mother’s mental health. We’ve listened to moms across the country and understand their unique challenges after giving birth, and are proud to partner with Huggies to provide 10,000 new mothers with basic essentials for themselves and their newborns.”

“The partnership with Baby2Baby provides much-needed supplies and educational information to mothers and their newborns. Expanding the program allows us to help more families in more states and close gaps in maternal health care that exist across the country,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Every mother should have access to the support they need for their family to be healthy. The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to use every lever available to support these women and their families until they do.”

“Kimberly-Clark believes in supporting changemakers like Baby2Baby to uplift communities and address grassroots needs. With this new partnership, Huggies will continue its mission to provide a healthy start for many more babies in America, building on our more-than-a-decade long history of providing over 300 million diapers to those who need them most. We are delighted to have this opportunity to strengthen and support the work being done by the U.S. Department of Human and Health Services and Baby2Baby to support mothers and children,” said Russ Torres, president of Kimberly-Clark North America.

U.S. maternal mortality rates more than doubled in the last 20 years, with mental health being cited as a leading cause of maternal mortality. The partnership between Baby2Baby and Huggies underscores a shared commitment to reducing this shocking statistic while supporting maternal and infant health in communities in need.

While Baby2Baby has distributed 170 million diapers in the past 12 years, that is still just a fraction of the need. This year, the organization received requests for more than 1.5 billion diapers. This donation from Huggies will enable Baby2Baby to extend its reach, ensuring that more mothers and babies receive the support they need immediately after giving birth.

About Baby2Baby:

Baby2Baby is a $80 million national non-profit organization that provides children living in poverty with diapers, formula, clothing, and the basic necessities that every child deserves, serving more than one million children across all 50 states. Led by Co-CEOs Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein, the organization has distributed over 375 million items over the past 12 years – more than any organization of its kind – to children in homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, foster care, hospitals and school districts as well as children who have lost everything in the wake of disaster. The organization’s success has been propelled forward by its industry-leading model that is redefining what it means to operate a non-profit with a seamless integration of impact, innovation, and influence, which earned them recognition as the #1 non-profit on Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies List and praise from TIME Magazine as one of 2023’s most influential companies. Like her, many women around the world don’t have the same opportunities as men; the total micro, small, or medium enterprise (MSME) finance gap for women is estimated to be valued at $1.7 trillion. Yet women entrepreneurs own 22% of micro-enterprises and 32% of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). More broadly, 740 million women globally are unbanked, according to the World Bank’s 2021 database, and 2.4 billion women worldwide lack the same economic rights as men. Unless we make conscious efforts to include women, financial interventions miss the mark.

To capture value, leaders are no longer talking about reporting alignment alone but about the opportunity to transform business processes for sustainable impact. By leveraging SAP Sustainability solutions, organizations can move beyond compliance and operationalize sustainability across their business.

Across industries, accurate data is the foundation for both auditable disclosures and reliable insights to steer sustainable transformation. But environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data aggregation and validation can be a daunting challenge given that most companies have not fully integrated their ESG data recording and control into their core financial, procurement, supply chain management, and human resources systems.

For over 50 years, SAP has helped businesses master complexity. With today’s evolving ESG regulatory landscape, including the arrival of the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), SAP is again rising to the complex challenges of enabling customers to record, report, and act on their sustainability obligations. This includes the difficulties in collecting accurate emissions data across internal operations and global supply chains.

Achieving Competitive Advantage with SAP Sustainability Solutions Powered by SAP Business AI

By integrating sustainability data with cloud ERP, SAP can uniquely enable businesses with the agility to keep pace with rapidly evolving ESG standards; link disparate data sources to share trusted, real-time insights with sustainability decision-makers; and achieve their net-zero ambitions.

Companies can start today by adopting SAP Sustainability Control Tower – integrated with SAP S/4HANA Cloud – for ESG data management and reporting. They can extend sustainability management with SAP Sustainability Footprint Management and SAP Sustainability Data Exchange to help accelerate their journey to the green ledger, managing the carbon entering and leaving their systems and balancing their “carbon books” the same way they balance their financial books.

SAP Business AI can take the value of our sustainability solutions to the next level by helping our customers set data-driven ESG and net-zero strategies, increase the transparency of supply chain emissions, automate sustainability reporting, achieve regulatory compliance, find and mitigate ESG-related risks, and better communicate the value of sustainability to their customers – all powered by the world’s largest and most comprehensive pool of foundational business data.

Combined with partner services for customer-specific data and reporting requirements, SAP Sustainability solutions can offer new levels of business insight for executive-level decision-making to help businesses reach their sustainability goals and comply with CSRD and other regulatory frameworks.

CSRD Toolbox

Companies operating in the EU face pressure from the expanding ESG regulations under CSRD to disclose their sustainability performance with a data granularity and auditability that – over time – will bring sustainability reporting on par with financial reporting. CSRD requirements will first impact large public-interest companies with over 500 employees that need to report in 2025 on 2024 ESG performance. Requirements cascade to small and midsize enterprises in coming years.

Under CSRD, companies will need to report based on the requirements of both the EU Taxonomy, which classifies sustainability disclosures for investors, and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), the disclosure rules set by the European Financial Reporting Financial Group (EFRAG), a standard-setting body of the EU. With SAP Sustainability Control Tower, companies can comply with both the EU Taxonomy and ESRS, gaining agility through the convergence of ESG data management and cloud ERP – and soon AI-driven business process optimization.

March 6, 2024 /3BL/ – Today, Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) in partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) launched a first of its kind environmental, social, governance (ESG) risk assessment tool for feed ingredients. The tool will improve visibility into supply chains, allowing stakeholders to better identify and address possible ESG risks. GSI and WWF designed the tool to support the salmon farming sector, but the wider animal protein production sectors, including livestock, may also benefit from its use.

The tool provides a consistent and aligned framework for farming companies to engage with their respective feed suppliers in order to get a holistic overview of possible risks in the feed supply chain. These risks could include biodiversity loss, climate change, resource use, environmental footprint, health and welfare, nutrition, human rights, and governance, among others. It can also help companies assess the scalability of future novel ingredients. With this knowledge, companies can make more informed sourcing decisions aligned with their strategic priorities and values. The tool, developed over a three-year period in consultation with the GSI members, WWF, and industry feed companies, is the first time a common methodology is available to support greater alignment in feed data collection.

“Feed ingredient sourcing remains one of the main sustainability challenges in salmon farming, and food production more broadly,” said Daniel Miller, aquaculture lead specialist at WWF. “The surprising amount of unknown information in feedingredient supply chains leaves the sector open to unintentional risks and vulnerabilities—even for companies prioritizing sustainable, ethical production. With this tool, GSI members are taking a proactive approach to address these risks and identify opportunities to improve the supply chain. Looking at supply chains broadly and holistically doesn’t just mitigate risk; it also facilitates more informed and strategic decisions.”

We know we need to improve the level of transparency and traceability in our supply chains. Not only for our own knowledge, but also to provide feedback and assurances to our stakeholders whether customers, regulators, communities or long-term investors that we are sourcing from responsible and sustainable sources. By developing a common tool so producers can all ask the same questions of the supply chain which will streamline requests and improve the level of traceability, ultimately supporting accelerated improvements in the sustainability of the ingredients being used for feed,” said Tor Eirik Homme, Director of Feed and Nutrition, Grieg Seafood.

“This tool isn’t designed only for farmed salmon, or even just aquaculture, we see it having critical impact across the animal protein production sectors, and even pet feed, that all share many of the same supply chains and risks. While GSI has taken the first step to develop and trial the tool, we will now be working with other WWF partners to expand its use,” added Miller.

Sourcing feed ingredients from diverse supply chains makes it challenging to identify and mitigate all the current and potential ESG risks of our global operations. We’ve made significant progress over the past few years in addressing many of these risks, but we have more work to do and our pace needs to accelerate. We support the implementation of the ESG tool because it will help us better identify what we know and what we don’t know about the impacts of certain ingredients, and in addressing these concerns, we will increase the transparency in our sourcing and ultimately improve our performance,” added Jorge Diaz Salinas, Sustainability Manager, Skretting.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has also reviewed the tool and intends to incorporate it as one of its due diligence mechanisms to be part of the ASC Feed Standard certification process.

In addition to the tool, WWF in collaboration with GSI and Grieg Seafood, released a business case, Feed of the Future: Transparent and Traceable. The paper outlines the challenges inherent in feed production, the development of the tool, and Grieg Seafood’s experience applying it to their supply chain.

The tool is in its first iteration and will be updated as companies begin to use it and collect insights into their supply chains. Additionally, annual amendments will ensure the tool continues to support and deliver on its intended purpose.

All data collected as part of the tool is confidential and only shared between feed supplier and farming company. By using the tool and identifying possible risks, the aim is to utilize this knowledge to encourage innovation, spur continued developments in the sourcing of feed ingredients to minimize ESG risk, and ensure farmed salmon continues to offer a healthy and sustainable food choice.
