With thousands of parts, many moving at extremely high speeds in an extremely hot environment, modern turbofan engines are a miracle of engineering. But after thousands of arrivals, departures and flight hours, heavy maintenance is required to keep fan blades spinning and customers and team members moving safely in the air. That’s where American’s Base Maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma, comes in.

Download the PDF

Located in the geographic center of the mainland United States, American’s Tech Ops – Tulsa maintenance base has been the backbone of American’s maintenance, repair and overhaul work since 1946. It’s the world’s largest commercial aircraft maintenance base, employing nearly 5,000 team members, including more than 3,200 licensed aviation maintenance technicians and overhaul support mechanics. Each year, more than 800 of the airline’s aircraft visit the base, where the team works around the clock to maintain everything from seats to avionics and complete regularly scheduled maintenance work.

Tucked away in a non-descript building in the middle of the 246-acre base is American’s engine shop, known as American Airlines Engine Repair Overhaul or AAERO. The AAERO team is the best in the business when it comes to overhauling an engine, which means taking it apart completely and rebuilding it. Engines typically require an overhaul after 20,000 flight hours or 7,000 takeoffs and landings. This year, American’s engine shop is on track to increase engine overhaul throughput by nearly 60% over last year, or 150 engines annually, outperforming industry peers by a wide margin. That means fewer aircraft out of service and an even more reliable operation.

“The most important thing to me is the passenger, “said Kevin Harris, Technical Crew Chief for the CFM56 engine, which powers a majority of American’s Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 family aircraft. “Their safety is our number one goal. That engine, to me, is at the heart of keeping them safe.”

The Tech Ops – Tulsa facility was recently awarded $22 million from the State of Oklahoma to make enhancements at the base. The funds are in addition to a $31.6 million engine shop capital investment and ongoing $350 million improvement project made by American. As a result of these investments and added throughput, American is in the process of adding more than 300 new jobs a Tech Ops – Tulsa.

Abbott

First established in 2021, Abbott will continue as Global Health Sciences and Nutrition Partner of the Real Madrid Football Club and Global Partner of the Real Madrid Foundation through the club’s 2026-2027 seasonPartnership aims to reduce childhood malnutrition and promote healthy habits for future generationsAbbott has provided over 25,000 hours of nutrition education and screened over 3,000 children for malnutrition since the start of the partnership

ABBOTT PARK, Ill. and MADRID, March 6, 2024 /3BL/ – Abbott, Real Madrid and the Real Madrid Foundation announced the extension of their partnership through Real Madrid’s 2026-27 season. Abbott will remain Global Health Sciences and Nutrition Partner of Real Madrid Football Club and Global Partner of the Real Madrid Foundation. Abbott and Real Madrid will continue to work together on their shared goal of fostering health and nutrition among children and building a healthier world for generations to come.

As part of the extension, Abbott will expand its alliance with the Real Madrid Foundation to provide nutrition education and malnutrition screening to children attending Real Madrid Foundation Social Sports Schools around the world. Abbott has worked with the Foundation to deliver more than 25,000 hours of health and nutrition education and screen over 3,000 children since the onset of the program in 2021. The renewed commitment between the partners emphasizes the pursuit of Abbott’s sustainability goal of transforming care for malnutrition and improving the lives of 3 billion people per year by the decade’s end.

“Abbott and Real Madrid strive to create a healthier world and help children reach their full potential,” said Daniel Salvadori, executive vice president and group president of Abbott’s established pharmaceuticals and nutrition businesses. “This partnership stands as a testament to our shared vision of making a lasting impact on global health through the power of sport, science, and teamwork.”

Abbott will also continue to provide nutritional guidance for Real Madrid’s first men’s and women’s and Academy teams through research-based dietary recommendations backed by the company’s 130-year heritage in health sciences and understanding of the needs of athletes.

Beating Malnutrition Together

The partnership has played a pivotal role in advancing the well-being of children worldwide through nutrition education and malnutrition screening initiatives in conjunction with the Real Madrid Foundation.

Under the Abbott Center for Malnutrition Solutions – a collaboration between the company and external partners focused on reducing malnutrition globally – Abbott works with the Real Madrid Foundation Social Sports Schools to support at-risk children in reaching their goal of a healthier life.

Together the groups have delivered a health and nutrition education curriculum called Future Well Kids, created by the Abbott Fund and Discovery Education, to children in nine countries (U.S., U.K., Brazil, Colombia, India, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines, Tanzania). The lessons teach kids about the importance of healthy behaviors—like diet and exercise—to help prevent chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Abbott has also trained Real Madrid Foundation coaches to use the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) z-score tape, an innovative and easy-to-use tool that screens for malnutrition in children. The screening helps families learn their child’s nutritional status, which is an important step on the path to malnutrition prevention. By using the tape, parents and coaches are empowered to identify children at risk and help connect them to healthcare professionals and resources to get appropriate support. For example, at-risk children and their families received nutrition education and counseling from a nutritionist in a Social Sports School in Mexico. Those children showed improvement in subsequent screenings.

Abbott and Real Madrid highlighted their commitment to this initiative with the launch of the ‘Beat Malnutrition’ campaign aimed at empowering communities to support children through malnutrition awareness and screening in under-resourced areas. As part of the campaign, Abbott and Real Madrid co-created ‘Beat Malnutrition’ promotional armbands, inspired by the MUAC z-score tape, to encourage more children to be screened and donated 10,000 MUAC z-score tapes to communities in need.

Sports Health Innovation

The collaboration also extends into health and nutrition innovation as Abbott’s scientists and Real Madrid’s medical team join forces to pioneer advancements in sports health and nutrition.

Abbott and Real Madrid have co-developed scientific research and produced educational seminars across key nutrition-based topics including strength, immunity, recovery, hydration, and injury prevention that allow athletes of all skill levels to gain a deeper understanding of their bodies.

In 2023 the partners launched the “Abbott – Real Madrid Innovation Lab” inside Real Madrid’s training facilities where Abbott scientists and the team’s medical staff collaborate to benefit Real Madrid players and advance the future of sports health, nutrition, and science.

Abbott’s products such as Ensure® Max Protein, Abound® and Pedialyte® Sport are used by Real Madrid players.

by Maria Lettini, CEO of the US SIF: The Sustainable Investment Forum

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is again a time of reflection. We delight in the pockets of progress over the years but reiterate that there is certainly no room for complacency. The World Bank estimated that there are still almost 2.4 billion women who are without equal economic opportunity and more than 178 countries that still maintain legal barriers to prevent the full economic participation of women.

Closer to my home, in the United States, numbers feel more optimistic. American women contribute more than $7 trillion to US gross domestic product each year. In addition, they control $10 trillion in assets, a number that is expected to grow to $30 trillion – an amount roughly equivalent to U.S. gross domestic product – over the next decade. And, by 2028, estimates suggest women will be responsible for 75% of discretionary spending.

When it comes to climate change, women are still disproportionately affected; however, given their growing economic importance, women have a really significant role to play in the rapid and just transition to a low carbon economy. At COP28, the nexus of gender and climate change was a clear focus. Vice President Harris reinforced the US government’s commitments to the Women in the Sustainable Economy (WISE) Initiative which, through public-private partnerships, gives women around the world access to capital and financing that supports climate resilience and women’s leadership on climate issues.

To meet net zero by 2050, the U.S. must transition swiftly. It’s an incredible challenge that requires the alignment of energy demand and production, diverse infrastructure components, supply chains across sectors, capital formation, public opinion, and more. Women’s influence is increasingly converging to the center as women become empowered to contribute to and benefit from the transition. At the US Sustainable Investment Forum (SIF), our research finds that climate is a top criterion for both institutional investors and money managers, and that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) issues are among our members’ top five investment themes and engagement priorities. This important climate-DEI intersection creates a potential wealth of opportunities for investors.

March 11, 2024 /3BL/ – Today, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Freshwater Select, in collaboration with industry partners, launched the Invasive Carp Consortium (ICC) which will propel market forces to halt the damage caused by invasive carp to U.S. lakes and rivers. By increasing demand for carp products as a source of protein for both humans and animals, the ICC unifies and amplifies the private sector’s commitment to reduce the population of this harmful species and counteract its environmental damage while contributing to a circular economy.

Invasive carp, originally introduced into the U.S. decades ago as a novel tool for pond cleaning, have infested and overwhelmed river systems in the American Midwest. The fish weigh around 30 pounds and jump high out of water, colliding with anything in their path. Their proliferation has devastated sport fishing, eliminated recreational water sports, killed off native species, and wreaked havoc on aquatic ecosystems.

“Over the years there have been several invasive carp eradication programs, but these fish continue to spread like a plague throughout our waterways,” said Ellen Dierenfeld, who leads sustainable feed innovation at WWF. “We’re coming at this problem in a totally new way that hits two targets at once. By developing market demand for enhanced carp products for human and animal feed, we create viable options for harvesting these fish on a large scale, adding to the blue economy as well as food system circularity. And we also alleviate some of the adverse environmental effects of traditional livestock, aquaculture, and animal feed production.”

“Developing markets for invasive carp is the ultimate long-term solution to what was once considered an unsolvable problem,” said Matthew Sulkowski, CEO of Freshwater Select. “Everyone benefits here. With this level of industry collaboration and support, fishers will be able to harvest carp more safely and responsibly, processors will have access to a longer-term supply of high-quality carp, and companies can support a critical environmental initiative by purchasing it.”

The ICC is an industry trade association whose members represent the broader private sector actors in the carp supply chain. Key tenants of the organization include providing education and outreach to support market growth while adhering to sustainable business practices, and creating a more robust, responsible, and transparent food supply chain market through data and transparency into the freshwater fish industry.

Josiah Christopher’s interest in discovering how things work started when he was young and went beyond building blocks and Legos to taking apart household appliances.

“It was a passion I had, and my parents encouraged me to dive deeper into it. So, I got involved in a lot of engineering camps, competitions, car building, robotics and everything I could,” Josiah said.

As a junior at Prairie View A&M University in Texas, the natural next step was majoring in mechanical engineering.

For Damenica Ellis, a sophomore at Howard University, a passion for learning inspires her to share that knowledge with others.

“I want to inform people about what is going on around them and be a voice for underrepresented groups who might not have one,” Damenica said.

Josiah and Damenica are two of 49 3M Scholars awarded a scholarship from UNCF (United Negro College Fund) to support their higher education.

“Here at 3M, we are so inspired by the 3M Scholars who are academically preparing to change the world,” said Michael Stroik, vice president, Community Relations. “This program was created to help transform lives through scholarships and career exploration opportunities and UNCF does an incredible job advancing this work.”

The scholarship helped Josiah fund his education, and to him being a 3M Scholar has meant persevering through anything and everything. He credits the scholarship for staying in school.

“I was not doing well in school and had to take a break,” said Josiah. “But they still helped me get back on my feet and offered tutoring services, resources and people who were there to help. They saw that I was in need and helped me meet that need.”

As he is planning for the future, Josiah is looking to bring science fiction to life and hopes to help design technology that enables solid objects to phase through matter.

“I want to be involved in creating something from sci-fi shows, maybe teleportation or being able to walk through a wall. I feel like with what we have going and with what 3M is capable of, it could very much be a possibility,” he said.

STEM has had a big impact on Damenica’s life, starting when she was young and her parents created space for her to discover and explore on her own.

“One Christmas, my mom got me an experiment kit. It was making a circuit to turn on a light, but once I had completed the instructions, it had other things you could build and tests to conduct, as well,” she shared. “My dad’s innovativeness had an impact on me, too … He would make something of nothing – he was really an inventor in his own way. One winter we didn’t have a sled and he tied some extension cords to the top of a garbage bin. I had the time of my life.”

When it was time to decide on a major in college, the multifaceted Damenica declared one that would bring all her interests together – Media, Film and Journalism, focused on the journalism angle.

Her background in experiments and learning about a variety of topics is helping in her major today, she said, where STEM topics play a larger role than people might think. She’s learning how to build websites, make graphics and develop a variety of digital content so she can share her stories and learnings with a large audience.

The technology she’s most excited about? Advancements in medical technology.

“I was inspired last summer when I spent a day at 3M Center talking with 3M engineers. They are doing such important work for society, but some people don’t even know what an engineer does. I want to change that,” said Damenica.

3M’s impact

In 2020, 3Mgives gifted UNCF a $5 million gift to provide scholarships to underrepresented minority students in St. Paul, Minnesota, with plans to attend a historically black college or university (HBCU). Since the announcement, 49 students have been named 3M Scholars and will each receive $25,000 over a four-year period.

3M’s grant with UNCF is one way we’re working toward our goal of providing five million STEM and skilled trades learning experiences through 2025. By helping these students pursue higher education, 3M hopes to inspire curiosity, improve educational outcomes and transform opportunities for underrepresented individuals. As of 2022, we have provided over two million opportunities across the U.S.

2023 Recognition

Proud of Yum for our recognition from CDP on our climate, water and deforestation efforts. 2023’s scores were highest ever across all three CDP categories, with all areas receiving A’s or B’s. More to do, but a great journey over the last 7 years of continuous improvement. Great work by global teams in engaging with suppliers to help prevent deforestation (a critical element of climate work in global food systems), especially in areas of High Carbon Stock forests and landscapes.

Top 5 for 2024

Focus on what’s most material: The evolving sustainability landscape requires a renewed focus on the top material issues. Yum is conducting our third sustainability materiality assessment, and our first assessment using the Double Materiality framework to set up compliance with new European Union reporting requirements.Meet increasing demands of regulation: The landscape has shifted for large global companies. Voluntary systems are being displaced by regulated frameworks, especially in US and Europe.Data, data, data: Not sexy, but the importance of good quality data cannot be underestimated. Simplifying what we collect to align with our material priorities is a must for the road ahead.Concentrate on the doing: The right strategy and focus is a key building block. But even more important is doing the actual work to realize the strategy. For Yum Brands, this means taking actions that are Relevant, Easy and Distinctive (RED) for our customers and employees to see. With more than 58,000 restaurants around the world, making sure that our markets have the capability to drive change, is where the rubber really meets the road.Be comfortable in the uncomfortable: Thrive in ambiguity was some of the earliest career advice I first received. It remains a truism for success. Much is changing in the sustainability space – the science is evolving, the innovation keeps getting better, stakeholder and regulatory pressures grow. One thing that’s certain is that we must get comfortable with the uncomfortable, to keep moving ahead!

Get your teams ready. Give grace and inspire for a great year ahead!
