While we live in an age of hyper-connectivity, it often feels like people are more detached from their local communities than ever before. A majority of Americans (57 percent) only know some — or none — of their neighbors, and few socialize with them, according to Pew Research. And businesses are susceptible to the same trap. While corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs abound, few organizations go beyond the act of making monetary donations, missing major opportunities to build meaningful connections with the communities they engage.

At Subaru, we are committed to being a positive force in the communities where we live and work. It’s part of the Subaru Love Promise, our vision to show love and respect to all people at every interaction. This has come to life across dozens of CSR programs over the years. Working together with our nationwide network of retailers who know and understand their communities, we’ve established and nurtured longstanding relationships on behalf of Subaru. From supplying local high-needs schools with critical funding to purchase classroom supplies to teaming up with animal welfare organizations to help shelter pets find loving homes, we’ve had the privilege of interacting with community members on a personal level.

We’ve learned a lot over the years, but one lesson rises above the rest: Businesses cannot make a genuine impact on behalf of a community without building a meaningful connection first.

And our communities need these connections now more than ever. Across the country, hundreds of thousands of people are experiencing homelessness and other urgent need situations. Roughly 653,100 people were experiencing homelessness during a single night in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 2023 Annual Homeless Assessment Report. That’s a record high since data collection began in 2007 and a 12 percent increase over the year before. Nearly three of every 10 people (28 percent) experiencing homelessness are part of a family with children.

Over the years, we’ve made helping those in urgent need a priority through our Subaru Loves to Help initiative, but with the need higher than ever, we knew we had to do more.

Enter Operation Warm, our new Subaru Loves to Help charity partner. Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures brand-new, high-quality coats and shoes for children in need. Its mission is to provide warmth, confidence, and hope through basic needs programs that connect underserved kids to the community resources needed to thrive.

In addition to having over 25 years of experience and expertise, Operation Warm stood out to us because it is one of a few organizations helping to provide for children’s basic needs, as well as for their social and emotional development. Per the nonprofit’s motto, it’s offering “more than a coat.”

Through this partnership, local gifting events are organized so children can personally choose the items in styles and colors that they prefer. In February, Subaru retailers across the nation will actively engage with local shelters and organizations supporting youth in their communities. These special events, facilitated with the assistance of local beneficiary partners, offer a range of coat and shoe styles and colors, as well as socks — all donated by the Subaru retailer.

At these events children can try on, be fitted for, and choose brand-new coats, shoes and socks that reflect their personal style. These essential items not only keep children safe and warm, but they also provide confidence and can mean the difference between participating in school, activities, and other experiences critical to social and emotional development.

Subaru is proud to be the largest automotive supporter of Operation Warm and shares the organization’s values of community connection. And as with any good partnership, both organizations are benefiting tremendously. Operation Warm is helping Subaru create longstanding relationships between our retailers and local shelters. Our employees and retailers now have the chance to directly engage with people in their communities and fill a very specific need. Hosting gifting events allows them to interact with the children firsthand and connect with each of them individually, which is incredibly emotional.

Simultaneously, Subaru has played a vital role in the expansion of Operation Warm, enabling it to increase its impact in over 600 ZIP codes nationwide. Recognizing the demand for socks as a top request from shelters, Subaru initiated their production, complementing the provision of coats and shoes by Operation Warm. This underscores the strength of the collaboration between national partners and the collective achievements made possible through joint efforts.

We’ve always looked for ways to support those who need it the most in our communities, which is how our Subaru Loves to Help initiative came to be what it is today. Whether it is by providing blankets and socks to homeless shelters, donating food to Feeding America and local food banks, helping Meals on Wheels deliver meals to seniors, or supporting the American Red Cross in disaster response, we believe our communities get stronger when everyone is cared for. Together with our retailers and partners, we are committed to identifying the needs of the people in our communities and helping support them with actions that set an example for others to follow.

We are proud to partner with Operation Warm to offer children in urgent need both physical and emotional warmth, in turn providing them comfort, confidence and hope. As we look to grow our impact in the years ahead, Subaru and our retailers plan to continue going beyond just donations. We believe in the importance of meaningful human connections because nurturing and building relationships within our communities is equally as important as the work we do and the contributions we make.

In a move to democratize high-impact renewable energy investments, Ever.green has forged a partnership with Clearway Energy Group to extend the life of a 55 MW wind farm in Big Spring, Texas. In this deal, eight brands, including Atlassian, Arrow Electronics, Autodesk, Brooks Running, Compose[d], Medallia, and Trimble, joined forces to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from the project through long-term contracts, which will provide critical funding to the project over its extended lifespan.

Cris Eugster, CEO and Co-Founder of Ever.green, said, “Our ability to fractionalize participation opens access to all companies wanting to have impact in the energy transition.”

Ever.green’s high-impact RECs play a critical role in supporting new clean energy projects by bolstering their initial financing prospects and long-term viability; the long-term REC contracts require robust diligence of the project and legal attestation of additionality. Up until now, companies looking to offset their Scope 2 emissions have had only two options: enter into a VPPA or PPA (which requires significant scale, capital, and the willingness to take energy price risk) or buy low-cost unbundled RECs on the spot market (which have negligible impact on the energy transition).

Through their investments, companies are helping to accelerate the energy transition while advancing their sustainability objectives. Dave Kemp, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Brooks Running, remarks, “Purchasing renewable energy is a critical strategy to achieve our Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.”

The Ocotillo wind farm, which began commercial operations in 2008, underwent a partial repower by Clearway Energy Group, aimed at harnessing the abundant wind resources at the site while optimizing existing infrastructure. This project not only sustains a vital renewable energy source but also delivers environmental and community benefits, including materials and infrastructure reuse, minimal land-use impact, and substantial tax revenues for Howard County. The energy produced by the Ocotillo wind farm is enough to power 19,000 homes each year and will avoid tens of thousands of tCO2 of emissions per year.

Nichole Wiley-Marks, vice president of global real estate and sustainability for Arrow, said, “We’re proud to be a part of this project and invest in clean, renewable energy sources that allow us to meet our climate goals.”

Ever.green’s commitment to driving impactful change extends beyond RECs. In 2023, we partnered with Baker Tilly to launch the first digital marketplace for clean energy tax credits, further empowering corporate buyers to amplify their renewable energy purchasing impact while reducing costs.

This collaboration between Ever.green and Clearway epitomizes the collective effort required to propel the world towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. By harnessing the power of corporate sustainability initiatives, we can create a lasting impact that transcends boundaries.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your current role.

Hello! I’m Aleksandar Stančov and I am a Software Development Engineer I (SDE), here at GoDaddy. My journey began with a passion for problem-solving through math competitions during my elementary school years. This love for tackling challenges seamlessly transitioned into programming, becoming my natural next step. I’m currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme at University of Belgrade, School of Electrical Engineering. Contrary to what one might think, it’s my skills honed at GoDaddy that are proving invaluable in my academic pursuits, rather than the other way around.

What was your favourite part of your GoDaddy internship?

My favourite parts about the internship were the team atmosphere and the amazing mentorship I received. Learning about good coding practices and software fundamentals was incredibly valuable. Additionally, I enjoyed taking part in a team-wide Security initiative for remediating malware. Thanks to the internship, I gained the knowledge and confidence needed to transition into a full-time role.

What were you most excited for, about starting full-time here?

I was particularly excited to have the opportunity to continue learning from more experienced colleagues and to begin contributing to products used by a substantial number of users.

What’s the most challenging yet rewarding thing that you’ve worked on at GoDaddy?

That would be the work that I started doing during my internship and continued to do after stepping into an SDE role – malware remediation. It was challenging due to the fact that there were very interesting and different kinds of malware on customer sites. It was rewarding because it pushed me to be more creative in my approach. I take great pride in knowing that I’ve played a role in helping our customers achieve their goals more seamlessly.

What advice would you give to an individual who is interested in a career in Software Development Engineering?

I would advise them to experiment with various fields of work within Software Development Engineering. This approach is the quickest way of discovering what you truly enjoy, ultimately enabling you to make the most significant impact.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

After work and university duties, there isn’t much time left for myself. However, I enjoy travelling with the little time I do have. Last year, I went to Rome and Nice, and this year, I took a trip to Porto! It’s a beautiful city in Portugal and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Access to safe water and sanitation is a fundamental human right under binding international law. Yet today, a global water crisis still persists. 2.2 billion people—or 1 in 4—still lack access to safe water and 3.5 billion people—or 2 in 5—lack access to safely managed sanitation. While gains have been made over several decades, the effects of climate change have become a large and looming factor, halting progress made. Though the role of the public sector remains paramount in addressing the crisis, private impact investment has recently also emerged as a powerful tool.

Investing in Household Water and Sanitation Solutions

Impact investing focuses on generating positive social and environmental impact while seeking financial returns. In the realm of water and sanitation, investment plays a pivotal role in supporting innovative solutions, especially at the household level. Among low-income consumers, at least 600 million people could access water and sanitation products, services, and upgrades if financing was available, equating to what WaterEquity estimates as $35 billion of market demand over the next decade.

WaterEquity has approached this market opportunity through an investment strategy focused on providing debt capital to financial institutions in emerging markets to expand water and sanitation lending. These financial institutions use this capital to grow their water and sanitation microloan portfolios, as well as to on-lend to local enterprises delivering water and sanitation innovations, products, and services. Since our start in 2016, WaterEquity has deployed more than $360 million in capital to this strategy across four private investment funds, reaching more than 5 million people with increased access to safe water and sanitation.

Culture in Focus is a series illuminating NRG’s unique workplace culture via our greatest asset: our people. The shared attitudes, values, and behaviors that permeate our everyday work environment are a source of tremendous pride, and they underscore how we meaningfully serve our more than 7.5 million customers across North America.

This first installment features Bruce Chung, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Seasoned investment banker. Two-time NRG employee. Dad-rock enthusiast. First generation Korean American. History buff. Foodie. One thing’s clear when talking with Bruce Chung: there’s much more to him than meets the eye.

Though his explanation of his CFO role is simple — “I’m the guy that counts all the money” — Chung’s responsibilities are anything but. And yet, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone more approachable. His love for NRG and his many colleagues, as well as his enthusiasm for what’s ahead, are testaments to the workplace culture that’s evolving.

People-centered innovation

The culture of any company can be challenging to define, especially for a company like NRG that has grown immensely through a series of acquisitions. Now in his second tenure of eight years at NRG (he served the company from 2008 to early 2016), Chung has been on the frontlines of the company’s accelerated evolution.

The crucial constant amidst change? NRG’s people.

“It’s really been very much about the people, and having the respect [for] how hard people work at NRG. When you’re a banker, you get to see how certain companies work, and NRG has always been one of those places where, number one, the level of talent has always been higher than other places. The work ethic has always been higher, [as have] the creativity and the willingness to be bold.”

This work ethic and drive to innovate is the result of a collaborative environment in which every employee is encouraged to engage and contribute something greater in order to bring the vision of NRG to life.

Never stop learning

Curiosity and the desire to make a positive impact every day are what motivate Chung to contribute everything he can to the company — “to give it everything he’s got.” And he’s not alone; this growth mindset permeates the halls of NRG’s workplace. The continuous learning culture at NRG stems from the drive to uncover what customers are looking for. From there, the exploration becomes,

“How can we make this combination something that translates into 1 + 1 = 3? We need people thinking about new things, and thinking about things in different ways. We don’t know everything, and not being afraid of discovery is important.”

Staying in the present while simultaneously looking ahead is a balance, one that benefits from the freedom to explore outside the box.

Many perspectives, one goal

Thinking about things in different ways comes more easily when the workplace is as diverse as NRG’s is, and our diversity is ever-growing. The differences in background and experience across our organization give us the ability to continually solve complex problems better. For Bruce, this is apparent in everyday collaboration with colleagues:

“When I walk around the company and work with different teams, I see a similar level of diversity. It really instills a sense of pride for me that, as a company as large as we are, we’ve done the right things to create the diverse workforce that we’ve got.

“Diversity of skin color, of religious belief, of experience, of thought, of life experiences… It’s all important for coming up with the right answer for our customers, our shareholders, and our employees at large.”

It is by virtue of our diversity that, not only are we a better company today, but we’re collectively powering a safer, smarter, more sustainable tomorrow.

Future-forward energy

Now, we find ourselves at one of the most critical junctures of our corporate history, and the drive to achieve has never been higher. As a first generation Korean American, Bruce himself is no stranger to hard work and perseverance; his first job after graduating from Columbia University with a degree in history was on Wall Street, where he worked as an investment banking analyst 80-100 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, for over 11 years. That grinding work ethic is a product of his upbringing.

“There was this faith that my parents had, that what they were doing and all of the hardship they were incurring at the time was all going to pay off… I’ve always had that ethos, to believe in the faith my parents had in me, the faith that I was going to be successful in life. It’s something I reinforce in myself.”

It’s also something he reinforces in NRG — faith in a future elevated by the bold vision of the brightest innovators pushing the energy industry forward. Our strong shared purpose — to power a brighter future, together — combined with our commitment to never stop improving is cultivating a unique culture where everyone is empowered to do work that truly matters.

MIAMI, April 10, 2024 /3BL/ – Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, today released its 14th annual sustainability report detailing meaningful progress in its six sustainability focus areas, including toward its highest-priority goals supporting climate action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting a circular economy model to reduce waste. The company achieved several 2030 environmental goals well in advance and is tracking ahead of schedule on a number of other key targets, including GHG intensity reductions. Details are outlined in the full report, titled “Sustainable from Ship to Shore,” and available on the company’s website at www.CarnivalSustainability.com.

“Thanks to our 160,000 remarkable team members who show up every day with passion and dedication, 2023 was a year of significant accomplishments across the board,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO and chief climate officer for Carnival Corporation. “We achieved record-breaking financial performance, welcomed three stunning new ships, expanded our global presence to over 800 incredible destinations and communities, and delivered unforgettable happiness to 12.5 million guests by providing them with extraordinary cruise vacations.”

Added Weinstein: “We also demonstrated our continued commitment to leading the way in making cruising more sustainable, marked by amazing progress toward reaching – and in many cases, exceeding – our vital 2030 environmental performance targets. Since we’re so aggressively tracking toward all our 2030 sustainability goals, we’re evaluating new interim targets along our pursuit of net zero GHG emissions by 2050.”

Carnival Corporation Achieves Key 2030 Goals in Advance

As outlined in the 2023 Sustainability Report, Carnival Corporation has reached several key 2030 environmental performance targets years ahead of time in its climate action and circular economy focus areas – major priorities in the company’s sustainability roadmap. For example, through decisive and longstanding climate action, the company is producing 10+% less absolute GHG emissions today than in 2011, its peak historical year, despite increasing capacity by roughly 30% since that time. Additionally, reinforcing a circular economy model has led to significant reductions in the volume and impact of waste produced overall. Highlights from the company’s 2023 report include:

GHG Intensity: Tracking toward its 2030 goal four years ahead of schedule, the company formally committed to reducing its GHG intensity by at least 20% by 2026 (versus 2019 levels; measured on a lower berth capacity basis). The company expects this performance to put it ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 carbon intensity reduction timeline.Shore Power: Surpassing its 2030 goal in 2023 – seven years early – the company now leads the industry with 64% of its fleet shore power-capable, meaning it has twice as many ships able to “plug in” than there are ports equipped to provide shore power. The company is now working closely with port authorities worldwide to foster increased adoption of this important technology.Particulate Matter: Recording a 68% reduction in absolute particulate matter emissions (versus the 2015 baseline), the company continued accelerating well beyond its 2030 goal to reduce particulate matter emissions by 50%.Food Waste: Achieving a 38% reduction in food waste per person (versus the 2019 baseline), the company came within two percentage points of reaching its 2025 goal to reduce food waste by 40% and continues efforts toward achieving its 50% food reduction goal by 2030.Single-Use Items: As of 2023, the company had cut down enormously on single-use items and plastics, eliminating ~500 million single-use items from the fleet by the end of last year (compared to 2018) – outpacing its 2030 50% reduction goal, which it initially surpassed in 2021, nine years early.Advanced Waste Water Treatment Systems: Finishing the year just a few points shy of its 2030 goal to outfit 75% of its fleet capacity with AWWTS, in 2023, the company had completed installation of systems covering 70% of the company’s fleet capacity, purifying even more water used onboard to municipal-water quality before releasing it back to nature.

On top of these highlights, Carnival Corporation is marching strongly toward meeting or exceeding its remaining 2030 climate action and circular economy goals. Important updates on the company’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) program, as well as its Advanced Air Quality Systems (AAQS), Air Lubrication Systems (ALS), and biofuels initiatives, and more, are available in the full report.
