Today, Nubank and Mastercard released findings from a study measuring the financial inclusion impact on individuals, including some who have historically been on the margins of the traditional banking system in Brazil.1 The study provides a view of customers’ experiences accessing and using financial solutions and tools, and the impact of those experiences on their ability to advance toward financial security and health. The four-part framework used in the study – access, usage, security, health – illustrates the holistic, non-linear journey of financial inclusion. While the study was developed in Brazil, the methodology allows the insights to potentially be applied in other countries around the world.

The study, which analyzed consumer behaviors and needs through pseudonymized and aggregated quantitative data and qualitative surveys with Nubank’s customers and non-customers, suggests that Brazil stands out in Latin America for being at a stage of growing financial inclusion, with 70% card penetration (i.e. individuals owning a debit or credit card, according to the World Bank Global Findex), 55% card usage and a high level of real-time payments usage.2 The elimination of typical infrastructure barriers to financial inclusion makes Brazil an advantageous market for studying the process and impact of financial inclusion independent of those barriers.

The data revealed that providing the unbanked and underbanked (i.e. those who lack access to credit and rely heavily on cash) populations access to financial services can potentially generate significant economic and social impact. Sixty percent of Nubank’s customers moved from financial access to usage in 24 months and 40% within 12 months, regardless of income level. The study also suggests that making payments with prepaid cards can be a stepping stone to accessing advanced financial products. More than three-quarters (80%) of people who used a prepaid card used it as their first financial product, 67% went on to access loan products, and 36% progressed to make investments.

While barriers to access remain, it is essential that those who do have access are reaping the full benefits from their financial accounts. In Brazil, 84% of adults have access to financial accounts, but they may lack financial education to progress along the inclusion journey. Active financial product usage may also increase familiarity and trust, leading to accelerated financial inclusion.

“Since Nubank was founded, financial education has always been one of our pillars and it is also present in the design of our products and services in order to empower consumers to make the best decisions for their lives and have control over their money,” says Cristina Junqueira, co-founder and Chief Growth Officer from Nubank. “Although access to financial services in and of itself has had a major impact, advancing the literacy journey on these topics brings greater and more sustainable benefits not only to individuals, but to the community as a whole.”

Providing digital payment tools accompanied by financial education (e.g., according to Nubank, its “Money Boxes” are designed to offer financial planning in combination with interest-bearing savings accounts), encouraging responsible use of credit, and investing in micro, small and medium enterprises can be key ways to bring more people into the digital economy and help accelerate their journey to long-term, sustainable financial health. By applying the findings from this study, innovative solutions can be designed and deployed with the potential to empower people and power economies in Brazil and beyond.

“The journey to financial security and health is non-linear and full of obstacles – the only way to accelerate this journey is by understanding the barriers and then building and deploying inclusive digital solutions,” said Mastercard’s Marcelo Tangioni, division president, Brazil. “Through this study, we have clear evidence that frequent, consistent and responsible use of digital payment tools is critical to building trust and putting people on a path towards a more sustainable financial health.”

ST. PAUL, Minn., April 18, 2024 /3BL/ — When it comes to personal protective equipment, or PPE, there’s no place for fraud or counterfeit.

Protecting the health and safety of workers across industries and work environments is one of 3M’s passions. We understand the importance of keeping workers safe and protected, and we recognize the value of being certain that PPE is genuine. Counterfeit products can pose serious risks to workers as they may not be tested or approved in the same way as authentic 3M products. Instead they are made by fraudsters using unknown processes and materials without quality control. Depending on the type of product, using a counterfeit product could put a person’s safety at risk.

Continuing the efforts against PPE counterfeiting that arose from the COVID-19 pandemic, 3M has established the new 3M™ Verify app to help companies ensure their PPE is authentic. The app helps validate a disposable respirator carton in real time by using advanced technology to identify a bar code and determine if a product package is genuine. A genuine result provides a high degree of certainty that you have an authentic 3M™ Disposable Respirator. An inconclusive result means that the package is either not recognized or a potential counterfeit. If you receive an inconclusive result, the app will help you contact 3M directly for further investigation.

The app is currently available for the following products:

3M™ Health Care Particulate Respirators and Surgical Masks, 1860 & 1860S, N95

3M™ Particulate Respirator 8210, N95 — excluding the consumer packout version of this product

3M™ Aura™ Particulate Respirator 9330+, FFP3

3M™ Aura™ Particulate Respirator 9332+, FFP3

You can download the 3M™ Verify app in Apple’s App Store. The app will be available on Google Play at a later date.

“If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is,” said Cassie Jacobson, director, 3M Personal Safety Division. “The 3M Verify app will enable customers to be confident their disposable respirators are genuine and working to keep them safe and protected.”

3M is committed to taking action to stop and deter fraud to protect people around the world. For more information about 3M’s resources to fight counterfeiting, visit 3M.com/3MVerify.

Physical safety. Protection and advocacy. A way out.

These are what victims of family violence and sexual abuse urgently need, and it’s what they will find at New Day Advocacy Center (NDAC) in Ashland, Wisconsin, a small city of 8,000 on the shore of Lake Superior.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for victim supports has been rising.

“In 2023, we served 294 people, which was a 15% increase over 2022,” says NDAC’s executive director Lyle Poppe.

“We’re in a very rural, sparsely populated area. To have 294 victims who need support is astronomical,” he adds. “It speaks to the need for these services and for education and outreach work to prevent victimization going forward.”

NDAC’s assistance is broad, covering a range of services to keep victims safe. The non-profit offers emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counselling, advocacy and financial support, in addition to life-skills education and career services. They deliver education and awareness campaigns to prevent human trafficking and to help people recognize and prevent bullying, controlling and abusive behaviors.

They also help their clients plan how they can get out of dangerous and unhealthy situations.

“A big part of our work is helping people with safety planning,” Poppe says, noting the work is specific to each person and their relationship with the perpetrator. “We ask, who are safe people in your life? How can you get out of an emergency situation? What are the key markers that something is going to happen, so you know how to react to keep safe?”

This work is essential and can be life-saving. He shares a sobering statistic: 96 people died of causes directly related to domestic violence in Wisconsin in 2023.

To meet the urgent and rising need, NDAC has doubled its service area in 2024, expanding from two to four counties in the north of the state. They recently added a new position, an advocate who focuses on working with marginalized communities, specifically Indigenous people from three nearby tribes—Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

“We are sensitive to underserved communities,” Poppe explains, noting a third of their clients are Indigenous.

The support of funders is essential to the non-profit’s growth.

Enbridge has been supporting NDAC’s mission since 2021. Last year, we contributed a $50,000 Fueling Futures grant to continue to help NDAC deliver its programming to protect children and families.

Safety is our top priority—in the workplace, at home, and in the community—and we are proud to support the vital work being done by NDAC.

Poppe says he could share many stories of lives saved and destinies changed for the better, thanks to NDAC’s services.

One client summarizes the impact succinctly: “(NDAC) helped me stay alive.”
