Longhorn Racing is a student-run racing team at the University of Texas at Austin. Not only are they building the best race cars, but they’re also building the future generation of engineers.

Longhorn Racing’s electric vehicle team was founded in 2016. Some of the challenges they face in designing an electric car are making sure it can go as fast as possible, making sure it has sufficient cooling, and doing that in an effective way that avoids spending hundreds of thousands of dollars creating physical models. This is where Cadence Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) comes in.

Cadence CFD takes a relatively short amount of time to run simulations and the cloud-based software allows the team to quickly get their models in and mesh them. With Cadence OnCloud, they have access to 32 cores per each simulation, which allows their simulations to be much quicker compared to using their personal laptops. The relationship with Cadence gives these student team members real life experience with software they’ll be able to use in future internships and full-time jobs.

Watch this short video to hear directly from Longhorn Racing team members on how they’re reaching their goals much more efficiently with the help of Cadence CFD and Cadence OnCloud.

The medical plastic waste recycling pilot brought together B. Braun Medical Inc. (a medical device manufacturer of smart-infusion therapy and related products), Lehigh Valley Health Network (a nationally ranked premier health system based in Allentown, Pa.) and PureCycle Technologies LLC (an advanced recycler of plastic) to evaluate and evolve the concept of health care medical plastic recycling. PureCycle Technologies focuses on the recovery and recycling of polypropylene (PP), the targeted material for this pilot. Also engaged in this pilot were Cougle’s Recycling, Inc. of Hamburg, Pa., a material recovery facility (MRF) in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, and Kurt Duska Consulting of Girard, Pa., a plastics recycling industry expert and primary author of this report.

The goal of the pilot was to identify barriers to increasing nonhazardous medical plastic recycling rates at health care providers by instituting a collection and processing program aligned with the quality requirements of an advanced plastics recycler in the region. This effort was enabled by a grant from Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services.

The report offers insights into the collection logistics, material analysis process, and the key findings and takeaways, including a checklist to help determine if you are ready to start a recycling program at your healthcare facility.

Objectives:

The objective of the medical plastic waste recycling pilot is to identify barriers to increasing non-hazardous medical plastic recycling rates at healthcare providers. This must take into consideration the impact on health care services, safety to employees, cost, and total environmental impact. According to the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC), U.S. hospitals generate about 28 million pounds of waste a day, with 20-25 percent of that being plastic products and packaging. Only a small percentage of plastics are recycled today. Plastic recycling at hospitals is less than 10%, which fills landfills, wastes natural resources, and increases carbon emissions.

Material Observations

A total of approximately 18,000 lbs of materials were collected.Bags that were collected with a high concentration of blue wrap were much cleaner, with a higher percentage of target materials and a lower percentage of non-target waste items. Bag quality was likely impacted by collection area and medical procedures.A high percentage of non-target materials in mixed bags required increased transportation, sorting costs, and potential disposal fees.Paper fiber materials such as corrugated and paperboard were often included in bags, which drastically influenced costs and efficiency. The program met PureCycle Technology’s minimum acceptable quality standard of 75% target plastic.

About 10 years ago, Tara Neff decided to include native plants in her yard to help infiltrate rainwater.

The unexpected results opened her eyes—and captured her heart.

“Beautiful creatures, including butterflies, bees and birds, will come to your yard if you plant native species,” Neff explains. “My plants are providing something good for nature, and I deeply appreciate that.”

Since her foray into native plants, Neff has become the executive director of The Nature Foundation of Will County in Joliet, Illinois, southwest of Chicago and the southern tip of Lake Michigan. The non-profit supports the county forest preserve district’s education, recreation, and conservation priorities that protect nature, inspire discovery, and bring people and nature together.

An online plant sale is currently running through the month of April, and in May the foundation will hold one of its major in-person native plant sales, giving Neff the opportunity to meet the community and share her fervent support of the transformative power of native plants.

Each year, the organization holds about eight native plant sales, all part of the Bringing Nature Home initiative. In 2023, the foundation sold more than 30,000 native plants including flowering plants, grasses and sedges, as well as more than 575 native trees and shrubs, with funds raised being reinvested into community programming.

As a complement to the plant sales, the foundation invites the public to view free, online learning webinars that feature authors, landscape designers and pollinator conservationists. New this year, the foundation will host a native plant garden walk in July, a tour of home landscapes made beautiful through sustainable gardening practices.

Every year on April 22, the world marks Earth Day, an annual celebration of environmental protection around the globe. At Enbridge, sustainability is central to everything we do. We also support community sustainability projects that help improve, grow and nurture our environment, and we’re a proud supporter of the foundation’s environmental education efforts in Illinois.

Since the spring of 2022, we’ve awarded the Nature Foundation and its sister organization, the Forest Preserve District of Will County, Fueling Futures grants totaling $37,500 in support of both native plant initiatives and community programming—such as eagle and pelican watching events, meet-the-mammals experiences, and an animal migration celebration.

These free events draw thousands of attendees, united by the desire to connect with nature and learn about how they can support their natural Illinois environment.

Other recent Fueling Futures-supported community initiatives in the U.S. Upper Midwest to advance sustainability include:

The City of Marshall’s dual Power of Produce programs for seniors and kids in Michigan, which encourages healthy eating, food education and incentives to shop at the Marshall Area Farmers’ Market. The Penokee Rangers Trail Corps’ goal of purchasing an electric UTV to help maintain ski trail systems in the Iron County Forest of northern Wisconsin.

Providing opportunities for people to interact with nature and learn something new inspires people to want to learn even more, Neff says. “It helps them to care about nature.”

Neff knows as well as anyone that sustainability can start with a few small steps in your backyard.

“It’s about shifting what people see when they look at the landscapes they’re responsible for, the landscapes they can make decisions about,” she explains.

“On your little parcel of land, even if you only have a balcony, if you provide something that nature needs, nature will come to you.”

SANTA ROSA, Calif., May 8, 2024 /3BL/ – Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) and ETAS are partnering to provide automakers and automotive suppliers with a comprehensive automotive cybersecurity solution to ensure vehicles are protected when they hit the road. Through this arrangement, the ESCRYPT CycurFUZZ smart automotive fuzzer tool from ETAS will be integrated into Keysight’s Automotive Cybersecurity Test Platform.

The growing connectivity of automotive systems exposes connected vehicles to cybersecurity risks that must be mitigated to ensure the development of safe and secure vehicles. One component of an effective, comprehensive security testing is fuzzing, a test automation method that injects invalid, malformed, or unexpected inputs into a device to reveal defects and vulnerabilities.

By embedding ESCRYPT CycurFUZZ into the Keysight automotive cybersecurity solution, automakers can rapidly fuzz test targets via controller area network (CAN) interfaces. Fully integrated into the Keysight solution, the CycurFUZZ tool provides smart software to do CAN bus fuzzing at the module or system level. This offers an effective way to automatically scan the device under test’s automotive CAN bus for unknown vulnerabilities and uncover software weaknesses. The integration of ESCRYPT CycurFUZZ ensures that the cybersecurity risks associated with the CAN bus are effectively mitigated.

The Keysight automotive cybersecurity solution enables automated testing of all layers of the open systems intercommunication (OSI) stack for in-vehicle interfaces including Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, CAN, and automotive Ethernet to validate the robustness of electronic control unit (ECU) and telematic control unit (TCU) subcomponents, or the entire vehicle. In addition, the solution enables automakers and suppliers to comply with international cybersecurity regulations, such as UN R-155 and ISO / SAE 21434.

Eric Cesa, Vice President Sales North America and Brazil, ETAS, said: “Our agreement with Keysight is an example of how collaboration enables automakers and their suppliers to constantly improve the software quality and cyber resilience of their products.”

Thomas Goetzl, Vice President and General Manager of Keysight’s Automotive and Energy Solutions, said: “Future-proof testing is vital to mitigating the risks of evolving automotive cyberattacks. Working with ETAS to incorporate this fast fuzzing test into our automotive cybersecurity solution will help end-users meet industry standards while growing their threats database knowledge.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your current role.

Hi! My name is Michaela, and I am part of the Global Quality Assurance (QA) Team at GoDaddy. I’ve been with GoDaddy for over three years now and recently joined the QA Team, which mainly focuses on Contact Analytics, Quality Assurance, and Compliance Enablement. We also work on various interesting projects with different teams and departments within GoDaddy. I was born and raised in Bulgaria but moved to the United Kingdom over ten years ago to study at the University of Nottingham – and I never left! I have a beautiful daughter named Isabella who is the main inspiration for everything I do – both in work and in life. I want her to grow up knowing that no matter who you are, where you come from, or what gender you are, you can always find like-minded people with whom you can make an impact and change the world! This is why I love being a part of GoDaddy. We’re such a diverse company, spanning across continents, but we all have a sense of belonging, no matter what part of the world we’re in!

Prior to joining GoDaddy, you worked in the beauty industry. Can you walk us through what prompted your decision to pivot your career path towards technology, and how your previous experience in the beauty industry has influenced your approach in your current role?

During Covid, I worked as a Front-of-House Sales Manager, and my previous employer decided to change the booking system that the business was using. This change proved extremely difficult for everyone, except for me. I really enjoyed the technical aspects of the system, as I’ve always had a passion for tech. Math and Computing were significant parts of my curriculum during my high school years. This prompted me to expand my knowledge, leading me to study Computing and IT in university. Once I started studying, I really wanted to put things into practice. This is when I found out about GoDaddy! I had seen a Hosting Sales and Support role advertised, and as luck would have it, a client of mine was an employee of GoDaddy and spoke very highly of the company, including the benefits and incentives they offer within the Care department. I took this as a sign and applied the same day!

What’s the most challenging yet rewarding thing that you’ve worked on at GoDaddy?

Having been a Guide in Specialty for over three years, I can definitely say that no two days were ever the same, and every day presented a new challenge. Whether it was a customer with a difficult tech issue or a local outage, you never knew what the day might bring. However, the biggest reward for me has always been the gratitude from our customers. We often see our work as just another thing we need to do as part of our day-to-day. However, for some of our customers, our work can be life-changing. It’s such a cool experience when they remind us of that. Sometimes, as a Guide, you speak to fifteen to twenty people a day, and you forget how impactful each conversation is for the customer’s business. So, it’s great to hear and see that positive feedback.

How do you feel that the organization supports you to do things that are important to you?

Upon my return to work as a new mum, I was not quite ready to come back on a full-time basis and was very anxious about how that would work. However, both my manager and HR were very supportive and ensured the transition was as smooth as possible. I also got the chance to do a secondment during my time as a Guide, which gave me the opportunity to grow immensely, learn new skills, and work with tools that I would never have been able to otherwise.

What advice would you give to an individual who is starting their career within Care?

My advice would be to stay curious! The world is full of inventive and interesting people. Fortunately, a lot of them are GoDaddy customers who are happy to share their stories with us if you just dare to ask.

Are you enjoying this series and want to know more about life at GoDaddy? Check out our GoDaddy Life social pages! Follow us to meet our team, learn more about our culture (Teams, ERGs, Locations), careers, and so much more. You’re more than just your day job, so come propel your career with us.

Eastman

HOOGSTRATEN, Belgium, May 8, 2024 /3BL/ – deSter, a leading global provider of innovative service ware and food packaging concepts for the travel and food service industries, and Eastman, a global specialty materials company, are collaborating to bring innovation to the airline industry by introducing reusable in-flight drinkware made with Tritan™ Renew.

“The airline industry generates 6.1 million tons of plastic waste per year, representing 2% of the world’s plastic waste and more than 50% of aircraft waste.* We see tremendous potential to eliminate this waste with reusable service ware. For drinking cups, we have to find a durable and sustainable material to meet the design and operational challenges. Tritan Renew is one of the materials with the greatest potential to meet this demanding challenge ,” says Philippe De Naeyer, Director Sustainability at deSter.

In the airline industry, plastics must be able to endure a relatively harsh cycle of transportation, onboard use and cleaning via commercial dishwashing. Having more items that can last through the airline’s usage cycle while also retaining their high-end look will not only allow airlines to reduce waste but to maintain a premium experience. Tritan Renew is extremely durable, making it an ideal material for this type of heavy usage. Also, the crystal clear transparency of Tritan Renew creates a sense of premium experience for onboard usage.

Tritan Renew is made with 50% certified recycled content** through Eastman’s molecular recycling technology that breaks down hard-to-recycle plastic waste into its basic building blocks to create new materials while diverting plastic from landfills, incinerators and the environment.

“We are excited to be on this journey with deSter as they bring innovation to in-flight catering with Tritan Renew,” said Dirk DiSantis, commercial director for plastics at Eastman. “This partnership reflects our shared vision for driving the systems change necessary to create new solutions that eliminate single-use plastic waste for the circular economy.”

Taco Bell blog

April was officially recognized as National Arab American Heritage Month in 2021, celebrating the heritage of Arab communities and their many contributions to society.

To amplify this historic month, we’ll be spotlighting Arab Americans within Taco Bell and their inspiring career and life journeys.

“My dad came to America from Egypt on a music tour as he was a professional violinist… [that’s] where he immediately fell in love with the SoCal charm — and that’s how my family ended up in Los Angeles.”

Mohammad S. is a first-generation Egyptian who grew up in an Arabic speaking household within L.A county.

”I was that kid who brought lunch from home that smelled differently compared to other kids who had Lunchables.”

Although he was surrounded by a tight-knit community of Arab friends and family, it wasn’t until his first visit to Egypt after college when he received a culture shock, placing him in between the two distinct worlds. This opened Mohammad’s perception of the people around him as he realized that no matter the ethnicity, many second-generation Americans go through similar feelings, thus creating a shared experience.

“When I went to Egypt and met my extended family, I realized I wasn’t Egyptian enough, but not completely American either – something I think a lot of us second – generation kids struggle with. At the same time, it’s helped me appreciate my own culture and understand other people while embracing our differences knowing that everyone person has their own story and heritage.”

Today, Mohammad celebrates both the American and Arab cultures. One of his favorite events is Ramadan, a time of fasting and self-reflection that ends in a big celebration on Eid-Al-Fitr with food, music and familial traditions. This time is a great way to connect with others in the Arab community, but also share learnings with those looking to explore the Arab culture.

“We’re in the middle of Ramadan with Eid around the corner, and I’m excited to eat my favorite Egyptian homecooked foods. Food is a great way to learn about my culture, as it’s truly a love language. In particular, Egyptian food has influences from Greek and Mediterranean cuisine and vice versa, which is a fun crossover.”

April also marks Mohammad’s 14-month work anniversary doing marketing for Taco Bell Foundation!

“I love the fact that Taco Bell embraces differences and celebrates diversity in all forms. Seeing the impact the Taco Bell Foundation has on the community is truly inspiring.”

Looking to the future, Mohammad hopes to continue helping the local community and leave a positive impact on the people he meets, giving them a safe space to learn and grow.

“I hope to be remembered as a person who helped create a space of belonging in the world for others.”
