Hershey Company

Key Takeaways:

Across the country, women make up approximately one-third of the manufacturing workforce. At The Hershey Company, women play critical roles in all aspects of manufacturing, from entry-level to leadership. We asked some of our team members to talk about what their jobs mean to them and offer advice to other women and girls.

Manufacturing is a career filled with opportunities to learn and grow. While the industry has long been male-dominated, women today play an increasingly important role, making up about 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce, according to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Hershey recently asked three team members what drew them to manufacturing, what they love about their work and what advice they could offer women and girls who might be considering this career path.

Here’s what they had to say:

Nicole Henderson

Sr. Director, Manufacturing, Derry Township.

Number of years with Hershey: 27

What led you to a career in manufacturing? My introduction to Hershey was through an internship, and I have held various roles ever since including quality assurance, quality and reliability control, lean manufacturing and plant management. During the early part of my career, I spent a significant amount of time in the plants on various project teams, but I knew that I did not have day-to-day experience at a plant. Once I had gained that differentiating experience, I knew I had found where I was meant to work.

What do you love most about your work? First and foremost, I love the people. Each plant team that I have worked with in the past has become my family. There is no other place than manufacturing to get that kind of leadership experience. I also love the pace of the plant; there is always something happening.

What advice would you offer girls and women who are considering this career path? Don’t be afraid to try manufacturing. People think that you can’t have a work-life balance when you work in a factory, but that isn’t true. I integrated my family into my work family, and there are close bonds there that I cherish.

Favorite Hershey product? HERSHEY-ETS

Megan Isais

Sr. Technical Assurance Manager – Engineering and Maintenance, Memphis Plant

Number of years with Hershey: 7

What led you to a career in manufacturing? With an academic background in chemical engineering, I knew a career in manufacturing would allow me to combine technical skills and creativity in a fast-paced environment. I was passionate about making a difference, so I was drawn to consumer goods manufacturing. I wanted to work in an industry that allowed me to contribute to innovation and technological advancement. Right after graduation, I stepped into the manufacturing world and have not looked back since!

What do you love most about your work? The people. I really enjoy the diverse culture at my plant and within my team. Working with collaborative and supportive people encourages a productive work atmosphere and inspires a more confident and innovative environment.

What advice would you offer girls and women who are considering this career path? Lean in and accept challenging technical leadership roles, find strong mentors to learn from, adopt strong healthy habits, learn new skills, be confident in your ideas, deliver on commitments and always help peers succeed.

Favorite Hershey product? Reese’s Take 5

Mary Leslie

Director of Operations, Dot’s seasoning plants

Number of years with Dot’s and Hershey: 3.5

What led you to a career in manufacturing? I had a college instructor who recognized my ambitions for growth and development. He mentored and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone into the field of food manufacturing, which had more growth potential than my supervisor role at a distribution center. I took a leap of faith and began my first role in this field, producing smoked sausage. To this day, I cherish the decision to pursue a career in food manufacturing as one that has consistently enriched my professional journey.

What do you love most about your work? I love working with people, building teams and producing tangible products that people enjoy; there’s never a dull moment. Manufacturing gives me energy and fuels my passion.

What advice would you offer girls and women who are considering this career path? Never fear stepping into a role where women are the minority; this is an area where you leave your footprints and make a lasting impact. Manufacturing may not seem glamorous from the outside, but it is very rewarding both professionally and personally. I am a firm believer that women bring a different perspective into every aspect of their roles, immensely contributing to projects. In manufacturing, we are one big family.

Favorite Hershey product? I don’t just have one favorite. I love any filled Hershey’s Kisses, Rolo® Dark Salted Caramel in Rich Dark Chocolate Candy and of course all DOT’s pretzels.

We’re delighted to showcase an important milestone from our Mandideep plant in India. Over the course of a single year, our Mandideep facility has transformed from having no female employees to proudly welcoming 100 women to its workforce. At Hershey, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Congratulations to Hershey India and our Mandideep team for their dedication to creating an empowering workplace for all, one step at a time!

SAN DIEGO, May 29, 2024 /3BL/ – Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN), a global leader in DNA sequencing and array-based technologies, today published its fifth annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. The report highlights the company’s ongoing commitments and progress made in 2023 toward advancing human health by serving as a champion for patients, communities, employees, and the planet.

“At Illumina, we are guided by our mission to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome,” said Jacob Thaysen, CEO of Illumina. “Our customers, partners, and employees continue taking bold, meaningful steps to accelerate access to genomics, empower our communities, integrate environmental sustainability into our business strategy, nurture our people, and operate responsibly.”

Illumina’s CSR program is rooted in four key focus areas, and the company’s 2023 CSR Report demonstrates progress in each:

Accelerating access to genomics: Illumina continues to bring the benefits of genomics to more people by driving down the cost of sequencing, expanding into new markets, and increasing the diversity of genomic data. In 2023, Illumina trained more than 27,000 health care professionals and continued its advocacy for health care coverage for genomic testing, which increased from 1.2 billion to 1.3 billion. The company also launched several new products, including the NovaSeq™ X Series, powered by XLEAP-SBS™ chemistry; the TruSight™ Oncology 500 ctDNA v2 research assay, enabling comprehensive genomic profiling from liquid biopsy samples; and the 25B flow cell, which can generate tens of thousands of whole genomes per year at the lowest cost per sample of any Illumina platform.
Nurturing our people and communities: In 2023, Illumina maintained a zero net pay gap for the fifth consecutive year and reached 45% female representation in the workforce, with a 5% increase in female leadership roles over the last three years. Illumina also strives to create a purpose-driven culture, and in 2023, nearly 60% of employees worldwide participated in charitable giving and volunteering.
Integrating environmental stewardship: As the genomics industry leader, Illumina plays a crucial role in contributing to a healthier planet. The Illumina NovaSeq X Series, which debuted in 2023, uses significantly more sustainable reagents, resulting in 90% less packaging weight and waste, 50% less plastic, and a 61% reduction in climate change impact. Additionally, 100% of Illumina’s global electricity consumption came from renewable sources for the second consecutive year.
Operating responsibly: In 2023, Illumina strengthened its dedication to ethical business practices and operational integrity by ensuring that 100% of its core facilities participated in third-party audit programs. Illumina also expanded its ISO data privacy certification to include additional products and completed the EU-US and Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF) Self-Certification and ISO 27701 certification. Additionally, Illumina continues to exercise strong corporate governance with an independent Board of Directors (all independent with the exception of the CEO), an independent Board Chair, and 75% of standing committees chaired by women.

In recognition of Asian American Pacific Islander Desi Heritage Month, throughout the month of May, AEG’s Asian Pacific Islander (API) Employee Network Group (ENG) organized a series of events designed to educate employees about the generations of Asians and Pacific Islanders that have contributed to American history.

“As a leader of the API ENG at AEG, I am honored to celebrate the histories and accomplishments of our communities,” said Serafina Maulupe, Administrative Services Manager, at Crypto.com Arena. ” API Desi Heritage Month is a reminder to celebrate who we are and where we come from and be proud. To me, being Polynesian is a lifestyle, it’s in the way we live, how we represent ourselves daily because we’re always representing something bigger than us.”

Throughout the month, the ENG curated a collection of films, television shows, and music playlists made by Asian American and Pacific Islander creators. They also hosted three a virtual panel session and volunteer opportunities for employees.

The first session, “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation,” highlighted visionary API leaders working at AEG. The conversation offered insight into each panelists experiences and career journeys and spotlighted the unique approaches each are taking to drive the sports and live events business forward.

The additional two panel sessions were titled, “Inside the Grind,” and featured WWE superstar Solofa Fatu Jr. aka Rikishi and Manu Mausau, a former NFL player and founder of ManuMental Performance. During these conversations, Rikishi and Mausau discussed their unique journeys to becoming professional athletes, their API Desi experiences, the need for more communication around mental health in sports and the importance of staying connected to family.

The ENG also offered employees the opportunity to volunteer in the community. On May 23, AEG employees participated in Soccer and Hockey Clinics at the Little Tokyo Service Center hosted by AEG’s LA Kings and LA Galaxy, where staff helped teach the basics of playing ball hockey to the Little Tokyo Youth Club. Additionally, on May 4, AEG employees volunteered at The KIBŌ NOBORI – Children’s Arts & Culture to help spread hope to underserved children in the community.

3M pledge meets Direct Relief’s entire forecasted annual need for N95 respirators

In a significant step towards bolstering emergency preparedness and response efforts, 3M and Direct Relief are launching a global Respiratory Protection initiative to increase preparedness ahead of the 2024 hurricane and wildfire season. This initiative aims to increase preparedness and ensure the availability of N95 respirators, which play a pivotal role in helping to safeguard respiratory health during disasters and fostering community relief, re-entry, recovery and resilience efforts.

As part of the joint initiative, 3M has pledged to meet Direct Relief’s entire forecasted annual need for N95 filtering facepiece respirators with a donation of 5 million units. These respirators will be utilized in Direct Relief’s global humanitarian response efforts, providing essential protection to individuals in affected regions.

N95 respirators approved by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) can be used to help protect individuals within disaster-stricken areas. They help mitigate particulate smoke exposure during wildfires and offer assistance amid clean-up activities after floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Consequently, N95s constitute a cornerstone of Direct Relief’s disaster response framework.

Serving as the Official Respiratory Protection Sponsor, 3M’s N95s will be pre-stocked and strategically positioned to expedite relief operations to impacted communities, minimizing transit time. They will feature prominently within Direct Relief’s strategic emergency stockpile (SES), encompassing wildfire kits, emergency medical backpacks, hurricane preparedness packs, cholera kits, and an extensive network of U.S. safety-net clinics.

This significant new partnership between 3M and Direct Relief emerged out of an over 20-year relationship with 3M products and cash supporting Direct Relief’s global relief, recovery, and resilience efforts including responding to various emergencies worldwide, including the Turkey earthquake, Ukraine conflict, Mozambique floods, Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, and hurricanes and severe weather events across the US.

“Direct Relief is deeply thankful and privileged to work with 3M on this historic donation that will protect frontline health and emergency responders during disasters,” said Thomas Tighe, CEO and President of Direct Relief. “During disasters that are on-going, 3M has led by example, stepping up to help protect first responders, health workers and those at risk, and is once again providing high-quality protective equipment for people enduring fires, earthquakes, and other disasters and crises.”

This initiative reinforces 3M’s unwavering dedication to supporting communities in need and builds on its long-term commitment to humanitarian relief efforts. Since 2016, 3M has contributed nearly 10 million N95 respirators and other requested products to Direct Relief for individuals in the United States and more than 80 countries.

“3M is proud to continue our partnership with Direct Relief to expand access to critical protective equipment for natural disaster preparedness,” said Chris Goralski, president of 3M Safety and Industrial. “Access to N95 respirators can make a real difference in the health and safety of first responders and others providing care and support during crises. We will work together with Direct Relief to ensure these essential supplies reach the communities that need them most.”
