Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 5, 2024 /3BL/ – Black & Veatch, a global leader in critical infrastructure solutions, will study green hydrogen commercialization pathways as part of efforts to realize Malaysia’s low-carbon energy ambitions.

Malaysia energy companies Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS have appointed Black & Veatch to conduct the study.

“Securing viable off-takers for green hydrogen is a key factor that affects the bankability of hydrogen developments. With Malaysia’s abundant renewable resources including solar and hydropower, this feasibility study has the potential to shape the development of a hydrogen economy in Malaysia over the next decade,” said Jerin Raj, Director, South & Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Black & Veatch.

“Black & Veatch has been working with hydrogen and ammonia production for over 80 years. Since developing the first hydrogen power generation conversion project and the first major hydrogen fueling station in the United States, the company has continued to deliver reliable innovation and first-of-a-kind solutions across the hydrogen value chain,” added Raj.

The objectives of the Black & Veatch feasibility study are to validate the findings of a joint feasibility study conducted by TNB and PETRONAS to develop hydrogen in Malaysia and provide strategic, technical and commercial insights on the generation, transportation, distribution and demand of green hydrogen.

This strategic collaboration affirms the partners’ commitment to support Malaysia’s vision for a flourishing green hydrogen economy.

Malaysia has created the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) to guide the development of its hydrogen economy. The country targets to be a major hydrogen exporter in the Asia Pacific by 2050, with a projected revenue of more than RM400 billion (USD 85 billion).

Black & Veatch is meeting Asia Pacific’s rapidly rising energy needs with low and no-carbon energy sources, including green hydrogen. The company has engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) experience across the value chain of green hydrogen development, technical knowledge, and business and regulatory experience across power, transport and bunkering value chain elements.

Last month, Jeremy Lardeau, senior vice president of the Higg Index at Cascale, formerly the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, joined a panel at the Global Fashion Summit, in Copenhagen. The discussion focused on deepening understanding on the complexities of quality waste, water, and greenhouse gas emissions reporting, as well as the role of collaboration to address this challenge. The importance of leveraging data insights to move the industry forward was key throughout.

Muchaneta ten Napel, founder and chief executive officer, Shape Innovate, moderated the panel session titled “Reshape, Rethink: Innovating Data.” In addition to Lardeau, the panel included Scott Raskin, CEO, Worldly, an impact intelligence platform and the exclusive platform for the Higg Index tools, and Atnyel Gued, chief product officer, Made2Flow.

Lardeau shared the broad and complicated nature of the industry and emphasized the critical role of data intelligence to drive progress across the fashion industry. He added that brands and retailers have sophisticated data intelligence to support revenue growth that can be used as a blueprint. Lardeau explained the complicated reality of carbon emission reduction and addressed the need for a different collective, pre-competitive approach. He emphasized the importance of data and intelligence for the industry to figure out how to deliver on the impacts of carbon reduction.

Lardeau noted the progress the industry has made in deepening alignment. “In five years we won’t talk about data, because it’s part of how we do business. What we will talk about is industry aligned action on specific, challenging measures that help us get to our climate ambitions.”

Scott Raskin, CEO, Worldly showcased the Facility Data Manager, the organization’s new tool geared toward enabling factories to track performance data monthly. He stressed the importance of environmental data disclosure, asserting, “Brands have to capture environmental data and they will need to report and disclose. This enforces the need to deploy tools. It’s not a choice.”

Finally, all three panelists called for the continued collaboration across the industry with Made2Flow’s Atnyel Gued asserting, “Don’t be afraid of your supply chain”.

Charlie’s smile was timid as her mother gingerly pulled the small patient wagon in which she sat into the room, the two having ventured downstairs on this recent Thursday afternoon to visit the Celebration of Courage Event sponsored by Aflac and Beads of Courage. It was week three of Charlie’s stay as a patient at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and the first time the five-year-old had felt well enough to leave her room.

Celebrating the courage of patients and family members, the free of charge event was held to give them the opportunity to socialize and create new bead necklaces, clips and bracelets that help represent personal milestones in their treatment journeys. Among the bead selections were an Aflac Wingman Bead and a My Special Aflac Duck® Bead, special nods to the 18 Aflac employee volunteers who had traveled from Columbus to help this afternoon.

Five-year-old Dewey was looking forward to the event, almost as much as he was to turning six the next week, his mother, Megan, admitted as they made their way from one bead station to the next. Dewey sat quietly in his wheelchair, his collection of colorful beads threaded together by a brown string laying on a bright green tray across his lap. There were shiny blue beads, yellow ones and others in various shades of red, green and brown, some with swirls and stripes and even one with a rainbow. Five square, white beads, each with its own bold, black letter, were strung together to spell out his name.

“Some represent procedures and other milestones,” his mother said of the multiple dozens of beads Dewey brought with him. “Others, he just liked the colors.

“Little things make him happy.”

Aflac volunteers helped Dewey pick out even more beads to add to his collection.

“I was so happy to see the smiles on all of the faces,” said Angel Whittlesey Aflac’s Digital Enrollment Support Analyst, who volunteered alongside husband Marlon, an Aflac Senior HR Investigations Consultant. The couple handed out strength bracelets and helped patients design and select beads for their own origami crane strand necklaces. Others manned bead stations with activities honoring siblings and parents, and some handed out Certificates of Courage and helped patients weigh their bead collections.

“I was happy to see how positive the patients and families were,” said volunteer Jalisa Jakes, Aflac’s Associate Talent Recruiter. “It reminded me to be more mindful of being positive. Don’t take life for granted.

“Cherish every moment.”

New and existing KFC franchisees are being asked to follow the company’s stricter guidance for slashing their carbon footprint, through its Building Green initiative, a plan developed by KFC’s development and sustainability teams. That blueprint focuses on 11 “simple but meaningful” and mandatory measures it is encouraging, and planning to require, around the world as franchisees build or refurbish locations.

KFC is one of the fastest-growing food retail chains in the world, with almost 30,000 franchise restaurants and counting: There’s at least one new location opening every 3.5 hours. Those stores account for at least one-third of KFC’s Scope 3 emissions, about the same as the footprint associated with raising the chickens that dominate KFC’s menu.

Accelerates alternative fiber strategies with new ambition to be 100% Natural Forest Free across product portfolio beyond 2030

Appoints Lisa Morden as Chief Sustainability Officer

Kimberly-Clark today published its annual sustainability report, including an update on the company’s progress toward its 2030 sustainability goals and a new ambition to be 100% Natural Forest Free across its portfolio beyond 2030.

Over the past decade, the company has made significant investments in developing more sustainable products as part of the company’s innovation strategy and focus on delivering products with enhanced consumer benefits while striving to lower its environmental footprint.

“Sustainability is woven into the fabric of our 152-year-old company’s innovation strategy and purpose, serving as a guiding principle across every facet of our operations,” said Mike Hsu, Chairman and CEO at Kimberly-Clark. “I am proud of our team’s commitment to our purpose of Better Care for a Better World, focusing on where we believe we can make the biggest impact.”

Key highlights of the company’s 2023 progress include:

Better Planet: Building on Kimberly-Clark’s long-standing support of sustainable forest management, the company’s 100% Natural Forest Free commitment will greatly reduce its nature footprint since forests play a critical role in protecting biodiversity and helping mitigate climate change. Kimberly-Clark expects to be more than halfway to this goal by 2030.

In 2023, the company surpassed its 2030 water footprint target and bolstered the utilization of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power, including the launch of a new virtual purchase power agreement (VPPA) in the form of an onshore wind farm in Scotland and the initiation of several renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs).

The company has achieved an absolute reduction in operational (Scope 1 and 2) GHG emissions of 40.9% towards its goal of a 50% reduction by 2030, and a 10.4% energy efficiency improvement over its 2015 baseline.

Better Products: In the past year, Kimberly-Clark continued to seek more sustainable solutions to strengthen its product offerings, for instance introducing the company’s first-ever Kotex® paper pouch; and launching reusable menstrual and incontinence solutions in markets around the globe. Kimberly-Clark also continued to prioritize the procurement of fibers from sources with sustainable forest management certification while pursuing ongoing investments in alternative fibers solutions. The company has reduced its plastics footprint by 16.4% towards its goal of a 50% reduction by 2030 over its 2019 baseline.

Better Society: Kimberly-Clark’s essential and well-known brands such as Huggies®, Kleenex®, Kotex® and Cottonelle® make a positive societal impact in communities in which the company operates through social impact programs and collaboration with global and local NGOs. In 2023 alone, the company estimates that its brand programs – combined with global and local partnerships – impacted 101 million people worldwide. This included helping empower women and girls, enhancing maternal and child health, and working to improve access to safe water and sanitation.

Better Workplace: As part of Kimberly-Clark’s efforts to cultivate a culture where employees feel supported, valued and included, the company invested in engaging its workforce at global and regional levels. Kimberly-Clark’s executive leadership team (ELT) hosted sessions with the company’s top 200 business unit and functional leaders globally to help them understand how to demonstrate performance-driven leadership through the qualities of presence, courage, candor and transparency; and how to address barriers to performance-driven leadership. The ELT then partnered with these leaders to cascade the information to employees and their team leaders.

Further, in 2023, Kimberly-Clark strengthened its human rights due diligence and supplier engagement processes, including more robust risk segmentation, monitoring tools and supply chain mapping and by connecting suppliers with resources and experts to improve their human rights performance.

The company also appointed Lisa Morden, formerly Vice President of Safety, Sustainability, and Occupational Health to the role of Chief Sustainability Officer.

“We are proud of our progress and, in 2023, we continued to address challenges associated with single-use plastics, carbon emissions, and water use in our operations and value chain, while working to decrease forest reliance and increasing our use of renewable energy,” said Morden. “We recognize that there are still challenges and opportunities ahead and we remain dedicated to supporting a more sustainable future for all.”

Kimberly-Clark partners with a wide range of stakeholders and nonprofit organizations to deliver innovative products and solutions to improve the future for babies and children, including UNICEF.

Since 2015, Kimberly-Clark has provided over $24 million in funding to UNICEF to help strengthen neonatal health systems, increase access to safe water and sanitation, promote safe menstrual health and hygiene, and support early childhood development, resulting in nearly 14 million lives impacted across 26 countries. Additionally, Kimberly-Clark has donated over $4.6 million to UNICEF’s humanitarian responses, including during emergencies in Colombia, Haiti, India, Peru, Puerto Rico, and global support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Kimberly-Clark is a longstanding partner and with their continued commitment, UNICEF can reach vulnerable children and communities with the resources needed to survive and thrive,” said Michael J. Nyenhuis, President and CEO, UNICEF USA. “Together, we can build a more equitable world for every child and change the lives of millions more with sustainable and scalable solutions.”

Kimberly-Clark’s annual sustainability report and accompanying disclosures demonstrate the company’s progress through stories that highlight its work around the world as well as key data and metrics prepared in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) disclosures. The reporting covers the time frame of Jan. 1, 2023 through Dec. 31, 2023. For more information on the topics in this report, please visit the sustainability page on Kimberly-Clark.com.

Emma was a 28-year-old nursing student when she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. She had always wanted children and, once she learned that her treatment could affect her fertility, she found herself needing to make a quick family planning decision to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF) and freeze her eggs.

“You think that you have time to have all these things happen, and you don’t,” says Emma. “Your life is put on hold and your future’s put on hold, and who knows if you even could have kids.”

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, about 9% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are younger than 45 years old. While surgery and radiation rarely affect fertility, women who undergo chemotherapy can experience immediate or long-term infertility if eggs become damaged or destroyed. Other cancer treatments, such as hormone therapy, aren’t known to cause infertility, but the treatment duration could interfere with the biological clock of childbearing years.

Gilead partners with various organizations that support people living with breast cancer. One such organization, the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), recognizes the unique needs of people of childbearing age and works with patients under 40 through nearly every facet of their cancer treatment journey.

“People may tell you to focus on treating your cancer first, but it’s important that you also consider life after cancer treatment and the impact of any treatment you may choose,” says Amanda Nixon, YSC’s Director of Community Engagement and Empowerment. She says her organization always recommends that younger women diagnosed with cancer seek a consultation from a fertility preservation expert if having biological children is of interest.
