Independent research teams at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Oulu, and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute report that optical genome mapping (OGM) uncovers clinically significant genomic alterations missed by conventional cytogenetics, with direct implications for risk stratification across MDS, AML, and therapy-related myeloid neoplasms

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bionano Genomics, Inc. (Nasdaq: BNGO) today highlighted three new independently authored, peer-reviewed publications demonstrating the clinical utility of OGM in high-risk hematologic malignancies — myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN). The studies, published in Modern Pathology, the International Journal of Cancer, and npj Precision Oncology, reinforce a growing body of evidence that OGM can detect prognostically important structural genomic alterations that elude standard karyotyping, FISH, and targeted sequencing panels.

MD Anderson Cancer Center: Chromoanagenesis by OGM defines an ultra-high-risk MDS subset.

Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, led by Guilin Tang, PhD, used OGM to study 332 samples from subjects with MDS, identifying chromoanagenesis (CAG), a catastrophic single-event genomic restructuring process, in 15.9% of cases overall and 17.6% of newly diagnosed subjects. The study, published in Modern Pathology (Wei et al., 2026), found that:

  • CAG-positive by OGM subjects had a median overall survival of just 9.9 months, significantly shorter than non-CAG subjects where median survival was not reached.
  • CAG by OGM showed the potential to confer prognostic information beyond existing risk-stratification systems, potentially enabling the identification of patients for early allogeneic transplantation or TP53-targeted clinical trials.

University of Oulu
: Cryptic structural variants uncovered in “normal karyotype” AML.

A separate study from the University of Oulu and collaborators, led by Tuomo Mantere, PhD, used OGM to analyze 48 samples of cytogenetically normal AML (CN-AML) — a subgroup that appears unremarkable on standard karyotyping but is clinically heterogeneous. Published in the International Journal of Cancer (Turtinen et al., 2026), the study found that:

  • OGM detected clinically relevant structural variants or copy-neutral loss-of-heterozygosity in 46% of cases classified as “normal” by conventional karyotyping.
  • Recurrent alterations included KMT2A partial tandem duplications (10% of cases), RUNX1 disruptions, NF1 deletions, and a novel putative FOXP1:EYA2 fusion not previously reported in the literature.
  • Subjects with OGM-detected abnormalities had significantly worse overall survival than those without (p = 0.005).

Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute: OGM refines risk in therapy-related neoplasms and younger MDS.

A multicenter Spanish study led by Mar Mallo, PhD, and Francesc Solé, PhD, at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute in collaboration with a Spanish hospital network applied OGM to two clinically distinct: 48 subjects with therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN) and 65 subjects with younger-onset MDS (yMDS, age ≤60). Published in npj Precision Oncology (Mestre et al., 2026), the study found that:

  • OGM was interpretable in 100% of samples, including all 8 cases where conventional banding analysis (CBA) failed due to lack of dividing cells, and identified 134 additional genomic alterations.
  • OGM refined cytogenetic classification in 52.0% of karyotypically abnormal cases and detected clinically relevant structural alterations in 9.8% of cases with a normal karyotype, including reclassification of subjects into the therapeutically relevant MDS with isolated 5q- category.
  • OGM-defined genomic complexity was independently associated with overall survival; chromoanagenesis emerged as the strongest independent predictor of inferior survival in multivariable analysis (HR 9.26), exceeding even TP53 mutation status.
  • Integrating OGM findings into IPSS-R and IPSS-M scoring shifted 16.7% of t-MN and up to 12.8% of yMDS subjects into higher-risk prognostic categories, which could have implications for treatment planning, including identification of biallelic TP53 inactivation.

Key highlights across all three studies:

  • Three independent academic centers, spanning the U.S., Finland, and Spain, each show the potential for OGM to identify clinically actionable genomic complexity that conventional cytogenetic workups miss.
  • All three studies link OGM findings directly to overall and/or disease-specific survival.
  • Findings support a potential role for OGM in refining prognostication beyond IPSS-R/IPSS-M and ELN2022 classification systems, including in patients who otherwise appear lower-risk by standard testing, and in cases where conventional karyotyping fails outright due to lack of dividing cells.
  • Across all three cohorts, chromoanagenesis and TP53 disruption consistently emerge as markers of a biologically distinct, ultra-high-risk disease subset best captured by genome-wide structural variant detection.

“These three independent studies, spanning MDS, AML, and therapy-related myeloid neoplasms, all point to the same conclusion: a meaningful fraction of high-risk genomic complexity in myeloid malignancies is simply invisible to conventional karyotyping,” said Al Luderer, PhD, chairman and interim chief executive officer of Bionano. “As OGM adoption continues to expand, we expect to see more of this kind of evidence connecting structural variant detection directly to potential patient outcomes and treatment decisions.”

Forum Expands Ecosystem Readiness Alongside Groundbreaking Pre-Standard ISAC and Live Sports Companion Milestones

NEW YORK, Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Verizon today announced a major acceleration in the development of next-generation wireless architectures with the formal expansion of the Verizon 6G Innovation Forum (6GIF). Nine industry heavyweights—Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cisco, Intel, Keysight Technologies, MediaTek, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, Rohde & Schwarz and VIAVI Solutions—have officially joined the forum, launched last year to establish an open, diversified, and resilient 6G ecosystem and develop foundational 6G technologies.

“By expanding our Innovation Forum and refining live edge-AI trials today, we are ensuring the AI-native 6G network is built from day one to scale 5G Advanced capabilities and translate these next-generation technologies into meaningful, real-world experiences for our customers,” said Yago Tenorio, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Technology Development at Verizon. “With 6G, our collaborative objective is fundamentally bottom-up and use-case-driven. We are designing the next generation of connectivity with a specific target already in mind: enabling and scaling AI workloads and the massive AI ecosystem—particularly the emerging class of AI-enabled wearables like untethered smart glasses, as well as pioneering Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technologies.”

The Verizon 6G Innovation Forum which includes founding members Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Meta, and Qualcomm Technologies focuses on unlocking the full potential of 6G by trialing new use cases, testing new spectrum bands and bandwidth, and ensuring global alignment with global standards bodies like the 3GPP. The arrival of the nine new members injects critical multi-disciplinary capabilities across cloud services, advanced silicon and accelerated computing, independent automated test emulation, network security and immersive device graphics simulation.

Pioneering Real-World ISAC Trials with Founding Partners
To move 6G from theoretical discussion into practical reality, Verizon highlighted recent successful field trials with founding members Samsung and Qualcomm targeting Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) use cases. ISAC essentially transforms the cellular network into a massive, distributed radar-like sensor without the need for physical cameras. Using 5G Advanced capabilities, the companies explored how ISAC could support public safety, environmental awareness and event management, creating a path to evolve these capabilities with 6G.

  • Crowd Density Detection Demo with Samsung: Staged live at a major international soccer celebration in Dallas, Texas, this milestone represented the industry’s first AI-powered ISAC trial on a virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) for crowd detection. Using a single 5G base station and 40MHz of CBRS spectrum, the network tracked the raw radio variations from six localized Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Samsung’s AI RAN and edge AI platform, Network in a Server (NIS) then analyzed these ambient wireless signal changes to generate real-time crowd-density heatmaps on commercial phones and a tablet. The trial validated how network-native sensing can enable real-time intelligence for large-scale events, which could allow event organizers to monitor spectator flows in real-time, streamline gate operations, reduce concession line wait times, and proactively address overcrowding risks.1
  • Drone and Vehicle Safety Tracking Demo with Qualcomm: Conducted at Qualcomm’s San Diego campus, this trial demonstrated the network’s ability to seamlessly multitask. Utilizing 100 to 400MHz of millimeter-wave spectrum and four synchronized Transmission and Reception Points (TRPs), the system successfully mapped and tracked the position and velocity of an airborne target and moving ground vehicles. Crucially, the network maintained radar-like tracking of the drone while simultaneously providing uninterrupted, high-speed 5G Standalone (SA) mobile communications to a phone user on the ground. This highlights 6G’s potential to provide the foundational, secure tracking infrastructure required for future autonomous drone safety.

Trialing an AI Sports Companion Application
Further driving its strategy of building infrastructure around the applications of tomorrow, Verizon showcased a prototype of an AI Sports Companion application. Next-generation, AI-native devices and wearables like smart glasses will demand ultra-low latency and a more balanced uplink-downlink model as the glasses will generate as much uplink data as downloading content.

Powered directly by the Verizon Edge Network, this research prototype application showed how that architectural shift could translate into a premium fan experience. Wearing Meta AI glasses, users could enjoy a game in a stadium or at home completely hands-free without looking down at a phone. Utilizing an ultra-fast edge network with a locally optimized Small Language Model (SLM), a NVIDIA DGX Spark and statistics from SportsDataIO, the application allowed users to verbally ask for real-time player statistics, live score interpretations, or game-winning probabilities, receiving instant, spoken answers right in their ear. The prototype was designed to explore how future technology could eliminate the friction of juggling multiple apps and keep fans immersed in the game while providing deep, real-time insights.

The Path to 6G Deployment
Looking forward, Verizon 6GIF members will continue to share learnings from future ecosystem demonstrations involving ISAC, digital twins, robotics, AI and advanced wearables. Verizon views the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as the ultimate interim proving ground on the road to commercial 6G deployment.

With Verizon’s dedicated 6G Lab already established directly in Los Angeles, the host city will serve as a live, real-world stage to stress-test the massive capacity demands and early use cases of the AI-native era, delivering practical user experiences that prove and validate the next generation of wireless technology.

Commissioning of Carbon Dioxide Degassing System Ahead of Schedule Marks Key Milestone in Capacity Enhancement Program

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEVO) today announced continued progress on the debottlenecking initiative at its Gevo North Dakota (“GND”) facility in Richardton, North Dakota, including the successful commissioning of a new beer degassing system ahead of schedule which will capture and sequester more CO₂. The debottlenecking will result in a 10-15 percent increase in GND output and returns and closely follows the successful commissioning of a steam turbine project in August.

The debottlenecking program is designed to enhance operating efficiency and increase production capacity at GND as the facility advances toward its targeted production capacity of approximately 75 million gallons per year. The project includes three primary upgrades:

  • Addition of a third liquefaction tank to expand capacity and improve the yield of corn starch to sugars
  • Addition of a fifth fermenter to increase fermentation residence time to enable the production of more ethanol and CO₂
  • Installation of a beer degassing system to capture and sequester additional CO₂ from the ethanol process

The CO₂ beer degassing system is currently being commissioned, several weeks earlier than originally planned. This equipment will enable GND to increase CO₂ recovery, unlock distillation capacity, and lower the facility CI score.

“This milestone represents another step forward in our efforts to optimize GND and unlock additional value from an already strong operating asset,” said Gevo Chief Executive Officer Paul Bloom. “Our debottlenecking program is focused on practical, high-return improvements that enhance production efficiency, carbon capture performance and overall facility economics.”

Construction and installation activities associated with liquefaction and fermentation continue to progress on schedule and both assets are expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

GND also recently completed the commissioning of a steam turbine project. The project lowers the plant energy consumption by optimizing the steam usage inside the plant while lowering the amount of purchased electricity. This project was already started prior to Gevo’s acquisition of the facility and was successfully integrated into plant operations in August.

The steam turbine and debottlenecking project are both examples of Gevo’s ability to unlock process capacity while operating safely and efficiently. These projects are laying the groundwork for the planned 75Mgpy expansion of GND which is anticipated to approximately double the output and returns from GND and is expected to be completed in 2028.

The NVIDIA CUDA-Q open source platform now includes CUDA-Q Logical, an orchestration layer that provides a programmable, verifiable approach to developing useful applications for fault-tolerant quantum computers.

News Summary:

  • The NVIDIA CUDA-Q platform now includes the CUDA-Q Logical orchestration layer, giving the quantum industry an open, programmable way to design and test fault-tolerant quantum computing applications in areas such as drug discovery, financial modeling and materials development.
  • Fermilab used CUDA-Q Logical to accelerate fault-tolerant architecture development from five months to three weeks — a 7x speedup.
  • QUOPS is a benchmark for the future of quantum computing, measuring the readiness of fault-tolerant quantum hardware for practical applications. Developed by Sandia National Laboratories, QUOPS is now available in NVIDIA CUDA-Q.

TORONTO, Sept. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — NVIDIA today announced an expansion of the NVIDIA CUDA-Q™ open source platform with CUDA-Q Logical, an orchestration layer that provides a programmable, verifiable approach to developing useful applications for fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Fault-tolerant quantum processors with logical qubits are essential for useful quantum computing, allowing systems to overcome the errors inherent in physical qubits so they can execute the larger computations needed for practical applications such as drug discovery, financial modeling and materials development.

However, developing applications for such systems is a tedious, time-consuming codesign challenge: A change to an algorithm, error-correction code, hardware architecture or other QPU component can significantly change the resources needed to run any given application.

With CUDA-Q Logical, researchers can now design and orchestrate the many components required for fault-tolerant quantum computing applications, easily switching between options to identify optimal system configurations for performance with logical qubits.

“Quantum computing is maturing into an era of logical qubits, and researchers need an open, customizable platform capable of representing all aspects of a fault-tolerant system,” said Timothy Costa, vice president and general manager of quantum at NVIDIA. “The addition of CUDA-Q Logical provides power and flexibility to explore fully integrated, co-optimized systems regardless of qubit type and architecture — drastically shortening the timeline to useful quantum-GPU supercomputing.”

CUDA-Q Logical is already being used by QPU makers and labs including Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Infleqtion, IQM Quantum Computers, QCDesign Quantum Motion and Sandia National Laboratories.

Using CUDA-Q Logical, Iceberg Quantum modeled its fault-tolerant architecture for Diraq’s qubits, showing how 1,000 logical qubits can be created with just 150,000 physical qubits, roughly 10x fewer than Diraq’s previous estimates. CUDA-Q Logical gave an unprecedented way to rapidly assess potential implementations of Iceberg’s architecture, helping dramatically reduce the hardware needed for useful, fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Fermilab Uses CUDA-Q Logical to Explore Fault-Tolerant Applications
In early work, Fermilab researchers used CUDA-Q Logical to validate prior results and evaluate physical qubits, runtimes and other resource requirements across different error-correction approaches and quantum hardware.

Fermilab transformed complicated fault-tolerant system designs into a repeatable and verifiable computational workflow, accelerating fault-tolerant algorithm development from five months to three weeks, a 7x speedup.

“Fault-tolerant quantum computing is the path to unlocking new scientific discovery, but getting there will require researchers to codesign algorithm, error correction, architectures and hardware together,” said Anna Grassellino, chief technology officer at Fermilab and director of the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center. “Using CUDA-Q Logical, our team explored combinations of these resources in just three weeks, compared with what would have typically taken about five months of building specialized infrastructure.”

Sandia Creates Benchmark for Future of Quantum Computing
QUOPS is a new, independent cross-platform benchmark developed by Sandia National Laboratories that measures the progress quantum computing systems are making toward utility-scale applications.

With Sandia’s QUOPS, the industry now has access to a hardware-agnostic, open method to benchmark progress toward shared goals for fault-tolerant quantum computers. Historically, progress in quantum computing has been measured primarily through advances in physical qubits — increasing qubit counts, improving fidelity and extending coherence.

“At Sandia, we can’t wait to see fault-tolerant quantum computers helping to solve problems of national importance for the Department of Energy and the United States,” said Timothy Proctor, co-director of Sandia National Laboratories’ Quantum Performance Laboratory. “Our mission right now is to bring that about sooner, by accelerating our industry partners’ progress. To do that, we, and other quantum computing stakeholders, have to be able to track and forecast the growth of quantum computer abilities. We created QUOPS to do exactly that, and we’re excited to see it used by quantum computing vendors and customers.”

Sandia shared early results in a preprint posted ahead of IEEE Quantum Week, reporting initial QUOPS benchmarks for QPUs from Google, IBM and Quantinuum. A QUOPS reference implementation is available in NVIDIA CUDA-Q.

Expanding the Quantum-GPU Supercomputing Platform
The ecosystem is also adopting NVIDIA’s larger lineup of quantum computing technologies for turning qubits into useful quantum-GPU supercomputers.

Diraq used NVIDIA Ising, the world’s first family of open models for building and deploying AI for useful quantum computing, to calibrate its silicon-based qubit processor.

Companies are integrating their quantum processors with GPU supercomputing using NVIDIA NVQLink™, the open system architecture for tightly coupling quantum processors with GPU supercomputers. With NVQLink:

  • Anyon Computing developed a new quantum control system.
  • Quandela developed a QPU-GPU architecture.
  • Quantum Machines ran a demo of integrating state-of-the-art supercomputing resources with qubits at the Israeli Quantum Computing Center.

The NVIDIA CUDA-Q open development platform continues to be adopted across the quantum computing ecosystem:

  • BlueQubit launched the Quantum Flywheel grant program for researchers, to give them access to NVIDIA accelerated computing through CUDA-Q.
  • Qedma Quantum Computing and QCentroid each integrated their technology with CUDA-Q to support quantum error correction and mitigation, as well as the deployment of quantum applications.

The quantum ecosystem is also working with NVIDIA to develop new and improved quantum applications:

  • IonQ announced progress on DQAOA-GPT, a quantum generative AI framework, using NVIDIA accelerated computing.
  • MITRE published work on building GPU-accelerated digital twins of quantum sensors.
  • Phasecraft is using NVIDIA cuQuantum to generate the largest-known variational quantum eigensolver emulated molecular database.
  • UCLA and Caltech are advancing the design of control sequences needed to run quantum applications.
