HO CHI MINH, Vietnam, September 3, 2024 /3BL/ – Black & Veatch, a global leader in critical infrastructure solutions, is evaluating the feasibility and readiness of deploying carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology in Vietnam’s coal-fired power plants to further reduce emissions.
The Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has commissioned Black & Veatch to study carbon-cutting technologies at three coal-fired power plants owned by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam or PVN). Those plants are the Vung Ang 1 Thermal Power Plant in Ha Tinh Province, the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant in Hau Giang Province, and the Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant in Thai Binh Province. Each plant has a capacity of 2 x 600 megawatts (MW).
“This is the first carbon capture study to be conducted on coal-fired power plants in Vietnam and its findings can help define the development of our national CCUS roadmap and legal framework,” said The VPI senior expert Dr Nguyen Huu Luong.
The study’s objective is to investigate the current carbon capture technology landscape and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of applying that technology to the flue gas from the coal-fired power plants.
“Deploying advanced technologies such as CCUS can help power producers and heavy industries reduce emissions in the region,” said Narsingh Chaudhary, president of Black & Veatch’s Asia Pacific and India business.
“Black & Veatch is committed to providing diverse and advanced solutions to help the Asia Pacific energy industry and existing asset owners meet growing energy demands with lower and no-carbon energy sources.”
As part of the front-end loading (FEL) study, Black & Veatch will prepare a carbon capture technology assessment, evaluate and propose technology suitable for each power plant, and develop preliminary conceptual design for the carbon capture unit. Black & Veatch also will outline strategies to connect the carbon capture unit to the existing power plant.
Vietnam’s National Energy Masterplan for 2021-2030 – with a vision to 2050 – encourages the adoption of CCUS solutions in industrial production facilities and power plants to achieve a capture capacity of about 1 million metric ton (mt)/year by 2040 and 3 million to 6 million mt/year by 2050.
Black & Veatch has been a market leader in studying and implementing carbon capture technology for more than 30 years. The company has extensive experience in the analysis and detailed design of carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, as well as CO2 compression and handling systems. It has evaluated multiple technologies where CO2 can be put to use, including methanol and synthetic natural gas production as well as bioprocesses utilizing CO2. Black & Veatch has regulatory and market experience to evaluate and support the growth and planning of carbon capture and utilization or sequestration projects.

AMD welcomed our first cohort of veterans in late 2023 through the Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) Corporate Fellowship Program, strengthening our workforce and underlining our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Eighteen months after the start of the process, four veterans have joined AMD: Michael Nguyen (US Army), Jason Harris (US Navy), Ziwei Peng (US Army), and Matthew Hermann (US Air Force).
Veterans can face many challenges when transitioning to civilian life. Many have not interviewed for over a decade, and despite often extensive experience, translating this work not only on a resume but also in a civilian environment is a daunting task to undergo alone. The HOH Program, developed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, immerses transitioning service members, veterans, military spouses, and military caregivers in the civilian workforce, creating economic opportunity by building their experience and increasing the possibility of a job in the industry.
As Jason Harris explained, “Having done the same job since I was 18, it makes you nervous getting out of the military. Through HOH, you get to go and actually work at a company and see the corporate structure, which helps ease the transition.”
Through the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Skillbridge Program, HOH internships are provided in which transitioning military members, who are still paid by the DoD, can be placed with civilian companies. The networking, professional development, and hands-on learning at the core of the engagement enable the participants to build a foundation for their civilian careers: the 12-week placement involves four days a week of working and one day dedicated to development, including certification.
For the veterans in the first cohort, this has been a valuable experience. Ziwei Peng, Program Manager at AMD said: “HOH helps by getting to know the industry – how to apply, building network outside of the military. On top of managing overhead, they also hold candidates’ hands through the entire internship with networking opportunities, skills workshops, speakers, resume, and interviewing training, and more.”
AMD is proud to support our veterans and bring their diverse experience into our workforce. AMD plans to continue this program in 2024.

DENVER, September 3, 2024 /3BL/ – KeyBank has awarded a $300,000 grant to Brothers Redevelopment, Inc. (BRI), a Denver-based nonprofit organization providing housing improvement and related services to vulnerable Colorado residents. The grant will support BRI’s Community Aging in Place – Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program.
The CAPABLE program helps low-income aging individuals to continue residing in their primary residences thanks to minor home safety projects that reduce the risk of falling, enhance accessibility and improve general safety and functionality of the home. CAPABLE clients receive guidance from occupational therapists and registered nurses to determine the support needed for improving safety and accessibility in their homes.
“Brothers Redevelopment is empowering our vulnerable community seniors with the benefits and services required to age in place,” said Chris Picardi, KeyBank Colorado market president. “This grant will help provide the safety and accessibility improvements needed to allow our lower-income aging neighbors to live in the comfort and affordability of their own homes.”
BRI began piloting the CAPABLE program in the Pikes Peak region in 2022 and it has achieved many positive outcomes. The KeyBank grant will allow BRI to expand the program to metro Denver.
BRI was founded in 1971 with a mission to provide housing repairs for low-income individuals in Denver. With community support through donations of time, materials and money, BRI has served more than 40,000 Coloradans through housing provisions and housing programs over the last year.
“We are incredibly grateful for KeyBank’s generous support of our CAPABLE program,” said Jeff Martinez, President of Brothers Redevelopment. “This funding will make a significant impact on the lives of countless older adults in our community, allowing them to maintain their independence and dignity while aging in place.”
