In the era of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence (AI), leveraging generative AI safely requires a thoughtful approach that considers not only its capabilities, but also the ethical, privacy and security implications.

Organizations can work to leverage generative AI safely by investing in several key practices.

Understanding new technologies

Education is foundational for any organization looking to integrate generative AI technologies safely and effectively. Ensuring that your employees, especially decision-makers, understand what generative AI is, its capabilities and its limitations will help in setting realistic expectations and understanding the potential risks of its usage.

Education also extends to generative AI’s strategic implications on your organization as decision-makers need to know how it can impact their business model, customer engagement and competition in the market. Understanding the potential generative AI can have to impact your organization’s core operations enables decision makers to proactively plan for integrating the new technologies by re-imagining traditional processes to capitalize on the efficiency and personalization that AI can provide.

Beyond decision makers, increasing data and AI literacy in employees across your organization is necessary for an effective integration of generative AI into day-to-day business processes. Not only does this promote responsible use of AI, but also increases its likelihood of successful adoption. When employees understand the benefits and potential use cases of generative AI in their daily work, they are more likely to support its adoption.

Leveraging change management practices can help to support the organizational cultural shift that is essential for successful AI implementation. By ensuring employees across various teams have a solid understanding of generative AI, organizations create a foundation for its effective and responsible use. Ultimately, a well-informed workforce not only ensures the successful integration of generative AI, but also fosters a culture of continuous learning and innovation within the organization.

Legal, risk and compliance considerations

To leverage generative AI safely, organizations need to prioritize compliance with both regulatory standards and internal guidelines. Staying updated with laws and regulations specific to AI use in your industry and region is crucial. Ensuring compliance with current and incoming laws not only helps to prevent legal repercussions, but also fosters trust among customers.

In addition to regulatory compliance, organizations should have a strong understanding of ethical guidelines and best practices for AI use. Ethical AI usage involves using the technology responsibly to avoid bias, misinformation and other unintended consequences that could put the organization at risk. Establishing and adhering to internal standards for ethical AI usage can help guide decision-makers and ensure that generative AI deployment aligns with the organization’s values. By aligning and educating employees across the organization on compliance and ethical standards, organizations can harness the benefits of generative AI while minimizing risks.

Data governance, privacy, transparency and accountability

Effective data governance involves establishing policies and procedures that ensure the responsible collection, storage, management and use of organizational data. A robust data governance framework provides clear guidance on data ownership, access, quality and compliance with legal and regulatory standards. This framework should include regular audits to verify data integrity and security, ensuring that only high-quality, non-sensitive data is used for training generative AI models. By implementing robust data governance frameworks, organizations can manage data responsibly, mitigate risks and ensure their generative AI initiatives are ethically and legally compliant.

Robust access control and development practices are also a necessity in leveraging generative AI safely. Implementing strict access controls ensures that only authorized personnel can access sensitive data and generative AI systems, reducing the risk of unauthorized use or data breaches. Development practices focusing on data governance and AI operations should include continuous monitoring of AI systems to track outputs, ensuring they align with current data governance frameworks and operational standards. These practices not only enhance security, but also facilitate compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

Additionally, generative AI models should be trained on data free of personal or sensitive information to comply with data protection laws. Organizations should adopt data handling, storage and privacy protocols that isolate sensitive data to ensure it’s not used for training purposes. By ensuring that data used to train generative AI models is secure and excludes personal identifiers, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with data breaches and misuse.

Lastly, transparency and accountability are critical components of safe generative AI deployment. Detailed documentation of the generative AI development process, including records of training datasets, model versions and training parameters supports auditing and accountability by providing a clear trail of the AI’s development and operational history. By having thorough documentation, organizations can maintain control over their AI systems, ensuring they operate ethically and in line with bother internal and external standards.

Secure development practices and continuous monitoring

Implementing secure development practices and monitoring systems is crucial to safely leveraging generative AI. Secure coding practices are essential to avoid vulnerabilities and defend against cyber-attacks, such as patching systems to address security threats and complying with best practices to mitigate nefarious use of your AI systems. Continuous monitoring and observability of generative AI systems help identify and prevent misuse. Algorithms should be in place to detect nefarious activities, with feedback loops from monitoring to address security breaches and misuse promptly. By addressing these security concerns proactively, organizations can work to ensure the safe operation of their generative AI systems.

How we can help

Leveraging generative AI requires a multifaceted approach to ensure the safety of your AI systems and organization as a whole. Take a proactive approach to safely implementing generative AI with an AI readiness assessment to support a holistic, safe and responsible approach to AI adoption.

Saint-Gobain North America, through its subsidiary CertainTeed Roofing, has enhanced operational practices and made process improvements at its glass mat facility in Charleston, South Carolina, saving over 16,000 MMBtu of energy (over 4,500 MWh), and saving carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to that of the average gasoline-powered passenger car traveling over two million miles.1

The project, which was honored as a top sustainability initiative for Saint-Gobain North America in 2023, is part of the company’s continued efforts to implement its global Grow and Impact strategy, which includes ambitious environmental sustainability goals, such as reducing the company’s consumption of energy and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Glass mat is a material composed of short fiberglass filaments that are uniformly distributed and bonded together by a polymer resin. The mat forming process produces a fabric that is strong, stable, and heat-resistant, and is a key component in the production of roofing shingles.

By taking a data-oriented approach, the Charleston plant, which began operations in 1981, gained a holistic understanding of both its processes and how taking a series of small steps can lead to a large impact on its environmental footprint. These steps included adjusting equipment in its dryer loop to increase airflow and lower the necessary temperature for curing glass mat, adjusting the fine tune vacuum settings to improve de-watering of the glass mat before entering the dryer, and working to reduce dryer burner excess air.

“By taking steps to reduce energy use and carbon emissions at our plants, we are embodying our mission to be the leaders in light and sustainable construction” said Carmen Bodden, Vice President and General Manager of CertainTeed Roofing. “I congratulate our Charleston facility on their success. I’m inspired by their collaboration and determination to make the world a better home.”

This project follows several other recent actions taken by the company to solidify its commitment towards sustainability:

Last month, Saint-Gobain announced that it will save over 10 million gallons of water per year through the installation of smart water submetering systems and other equipment upgrades at its CertainTeed Siding facility in Jackson, Michigan. In April, Saint-Gobain achieved Core Living Building Ready designation from the International Living Future Institute for its CertainTeed Innovation Center in Malvern, Pennsylvania. In March, Saint-Gobain announced that its CertainTeed Siding business had reduced manufacturing related emissions by 96% at three facilities in the United States. In February, Saint-Gobain completed the installation of a heat recovery system at its gypsum facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, which will lead to a 15% reduction in Scope 1 carbon emissions. In September 2023, Saint-Gobain signed a 15-year, 100 MW power purchase agreement with TotalEnergies for the purchase of solar power, expected to offset Saint-Gobain North America’s CO2 emissions from electricity by 90,000 metric tons per year.In August 2023, Saint-Gobain announced a circular economy initiative in its Ceramics business, where scrap finished goods from its Bryan, Texas facility are sent to other Saint-Gobain Ceramics plants to be reused in production, instead of ending in landfills.

With over 145 manufacturing locations in the United States and Canada, every current and future member of the company’s team plays a vital role in achieving its sustainability goals. A current list of job openings at all Saint-Gobain locations, including in Charleston, can be found on the company’s career website.

POSORJA, Ecuador, August 20, 2024 /3BL/ – DP World, a global leader in logistics and supply chain solutions, celebrates five years of operations at the Port of Posorja in Ecuador this month. The milestone marks significant contributions to the Ecuadorian port industry and reinforces the region’s role as a pivotal gateway to global trade.

Inaugurated in 2019, the DP World terminal at Posorja remains at the forefront of the maritime sector in Ecuador, thanks to a $1.2 billion investment over a 50-year concession period. This investment helped develop the port of Posorja from a greenfield site into what the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) ranks as the third most-efficient port in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador and Peru, said: “Reflecting on the past five years, DP World in Posorja has not only boosted our operational capabilities but also significantly contributed to Ecuador’s economic landscape. This milestone highlights our ongoing commitment to advancing trade infrastructure and logistics solutions that support sustainable economic growth.”

To date, approximately $500 million has been invested in the terminal, positioning it among the most technologically advanced and secure ports in the region. The port features a state-of-the-art terminal with 21 kilometers of access road and a 21-nautical-mile deepwater channel, enhancing the port’s capacity and efficiency. Around $140 million additional will be earmarked for berth expansion in 2024, which will enable the terminal to handle at least two fully loaded post-Panamax vessels simultaneously.

Earlier this year, the port welcomed three new Maersk service routes, underscoring its role as one of the most efficient ports in South America.

DP World continues to be a key player in enhancing Ecuador’s connectivity. The Posorja terminal connects with more than 40 ports around the world and offers seven shipping services linking major global markets in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, the South Pacific, and North America.

In 2023, the terminal handled 510,533 TEUs, accounting for 20% of the national market. The first half of 2024 saw the port facilitating the export of over 53 million boxes of bananas (28% of the national market), demonstrating its vital role in the nation’s export economy.

“As we look ahead, DP World will continue to push the boundaries of what a port can contribute to the maritime industry in Latin America. local and international trading ecosystem. Through innovative strategies and a dedicated team, we will continue to boost Ecuador’s efficiency and connectivity as we work to exceed the evolving demands of global trade,” Merino said.

Security and efficiency are cornerstones at DP World. Posorja was the first Ecuadorian port to implement X-ray scanners to non-intrusively inspect 100% of export cargo. The port also features unique infrastructures such as a modern truck plaza, being the only port in the country with this modern and safe infrastructure available for land transport. Investments have also been made in a secure land transport corridor, which includes checkpoints and patrol units from the urban area to the terminal.

Further deepening its community ties, DP World champions significant social and environmental initiatives, such as the Operators of the Future program promoting female workforce inclusion, collaboration with ESPOL university for technical education, and the Sembrando Vida mangrove reforestation program, which underscores the port’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The company’s decarbonization strategy has prevented the generation of more than 45,000 tons of CO2 through various projects.

CORRIGAN, Texas, August 20, 2024 /3BL/ – When Hurricane Beryl pushed through east Texas in July, many communities were left without power or running water. Among those communities were the cities of Corrigan and Camden, home to Georgia-Pacific lumber and plywood operations.

The Corrigan and Camden facilities were temporarily shut down in the days following the storm, as were supermarkets and gas stations, leaving more than 1,500 employees and their neighbors without basic necessities. So Georgia-Pacific moved quickly to coordinate with longtime partner Convoy of Hope to help with relief efforts.

The company connected Convoy of Hope with the Corrigan mayor’s office, and the next day a truck loaded with non-perishable food, drinking water and other essentials was on the way. When the shipment arrived, Georgia-Pacific employees, city workers and volunteers helped distribute supplies to more than 500 Corrigan-Camden area residents.

The response demonstrated the mutually beneficial nature of the partnership between Georgia-Pacific and Convoy of Hope. Georgia-Pacific often donates products to provide relief to survivors in the aftermath of natural disasters and other crises around the world, from hurricanes in Texas to wildfires in Hawaii to the war in Gaza.

“Convoy of Hope is so grateful for the partnership of Georgia-Pacific,” said Ethan Forhetz, Convoy of Hope’s vice president of public engagement. “Knowing we have partners like Georgia-Pacific who step up during times of crisis allows us to serve people better.”

Georgia-Pacific has donated more than $11 million worth of product to Convoy of Hope since 2008, including paper towels and toilet paper to be included in hygiene kits and lumber and other building products to be used in rebuilding homes and businesses.

Just this summer, the Broadway facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin, donated 120 pallets—more than 5,700 packages—of paper towels to Convoy of Hope. The rolls were produced using the facility’s new through air-dried paper machines.

That donation, combined with a separate donation by the Brawny® brand, contributed to a record 204,442 pounds of Brawny® product that Georgia-Pacific has donated to Convoy of Hope in 2024. That’s 190,080 rolls of paper towels—approximately 22 full truckloads.

In Corrigan and Camden, Convoy of Hope was able to return the favor, providing aid to a Georgia-Pacific community.

“Convoy of Hope is on pace to respond to a record number of disasters this year, including Hurricane Beryl, and we couldn’t do it without the generosity and support of Georgia-Pacific,” Ethan said. “They are helping Convoy of Hope deliver hope to survivors of the storm.”
