Becoming Net Zero by 2050 entails reducing carbon emissions to zero in Europe to curb the rise in global temperatures and stabilize them within 1.5 °C. The plan has four pillars: a predictable and simplified regulatory environment; faster access to clean tech funding; enhancing skills; and new business rules for resilient supply chains.
Studies show that 45% of carbon emissions are not related to energy but to products, which is why efforts need to be made to improve design, reuse production waste, activate industrial symbiosis processes to make the most of secondary raw materials, and recover and regenerate resources at the end of life. An approach that will have to apply the principle of circular economy to the different life stages of industrial production.
For example, experiences with industrial symbiosis, in which the waste products and by-products of one business become raw materials for another business or production process, are bound to grow. A way of operating that goes “beyond” simply recycling because energy and waste are not wasted, similar to what happens in natural ecosystems.
