Pepco is warning customers to be vigilant against phone scams. Pepco has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. Scammers also use a tactic called “spoofing” to manipulate the Caller ID displayed phone number so that it appears as a Pepco number. We also caution customers to be mindful of individuals who try to gain access to their homes by posing as utility workers. Utility impostors may carry “official” looking credentials and often work in pairs.

Sustainability is not just about what we do—it is also about how we do it. We strive to reduce our impact across all our operations, supporting the drive for cleaner air, cleaner water and less waste. Our global workforce helps us make progress every day through their innovative thinking and by sharing knowledge across our network so we can collectively accelerate our sustainability performance.

A Fresh Take on Best Practices

Making meaningful progress against our ambitious Twentyby30™ sustainability goals requires the commitment and creative thinking of our global workforce. That is why in 2022, we refreshed our long-standing best practices program to incorporate the Transit Packaging Division and the full Twentyby30™ strategy. The Twentyby30™ Best Practices program is designed to facilitate the sharing of operational efficiencies gained at the plant level on a global scale to fully encompass the pillars of our sustainability strategy and better position us to meet our corporate goals.

We recently celebrated the outstanding achievements of several teams based in Brazil, Mexico and Thailand for their resourcefulness to enhance efficiencies and processes that can yield benefits to our customers worldwide while also increasing the sustainability of our operations.

Climate Action Winner: Estancia, Brazil (beverage can plant)

Our plant in northeastern Brazil reduced gas energy consumption by nearly 20% by enabling its boiler to heat water only when the temperature dropped below required levels. This eliminated the need to keep the boiler in constant operation, which was done even if the water was able to maintain the optimal temperature without additional heat.

Optimum Circularity Winner: Monterrey, Mexico (beverage packaging plant)

Employees in our Monterrey, Mexico plant designed ultrafiltration equipment to remove impurities often found in used lubricant. By eliminating these impurities, the consumed lubricant was able to be reused in the plant’s manufacturing processes.

Resource Efficiency Winner: Thailand (Crown TCP)

This beverage can plant reduced consumption of city water by 200 cubic meters per month by installing a reverse osmosis treated water system for use in plant toilets, watering the plant’s garden and cleaning pallets and roads.

Working Together Winner: Thailand (Crown TCP plant)

Our team in Thailand was also recognized for steps it took to enhance worker safety on the plant floor. Material lifting equipment, which can be managed by machine controllers on the ground versus forklift operators, was installed to feed packing materials into the facility’s palletizer. The implementation eliminated a high-risk task and allowed operators to perform tasks more securely and efficiently.

Never Compromise Winner: Brazil (Corporate Procurement Team)

Our Corporate Procurement Team in Brazil implemented a detailed and dedicated supplier evaluation program to strengthen relationships and increase engagement with key suppliers, aligning with Crown’s core Twentyby30™ objective to “Never Compromise.”

Leading by Example

Our annual Chairman’s Sustainability Awards offer another way for us to recognize the exemplary contributions made by our manufacturing facilities and operating divisions in three key categories: Environmental, Safety and Social Sustainability. By sharing these achievements, we hope to provide a source of inspiration for our global workforce and continually raise the bar for sustainability excellence within the Company.

Winners of the 2022 Chairman’s Sustainability Awards, which cover achievements in 2021, are as follows:

Committed to the Environment: Crown Vichisa (Mexico)

Our Chihuahua, Mexico beverage glass plant was recognized with the Environmental Sustainability Award for saving over 15.5 million gallons of water and improving the quality of the facility’s wastewater. The team achieved these results by implementing a series of improvements including repairing leaks in washer valves, eliminating hard water, reusing water from downstream operations and installing recirculation filters.

Promoting Workplace Safety: Dahej, India

Our Dahej, India plant, which is part of the Transit Packaging Division, received the Sustainability Award for Safety for its comprehensive approach to workplace safety and extensive track record of incident-free days – which stood at 2,342 days (or approximately 6.5 years) at the time of submission. The facility adopted numerous initiatives to safeguard employee safety, health and wellbeing, including medical check-ups, classroom and onsite safety trainings, administrative controls and oversight, internal and external safety audits and motivational programs such as monthly and annual staff awards.

Making a Positive Impact: Conroe, Texas (U.S.)

The Social Sustainability Award, which recognizes activities that significantly impact the well-being of the workforce and/or the local community, was awarded to our Conroe, Texas beverage can plant. The team continues to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to their community by participating in mentorship programs, food drives, job fairs and various volunteer opportunities.

How do you evaluate how green (or not) a chemical process is?

For years there wasn’t an easy way. Then, in 2019, a team of chemists and bioinformatic experts from MilliporeSigma, the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, debuted a new tool, known as the DOZN™ tool. This industry-first tool helps scientists compare the greenness of different products and processes.

There is often more than one pathway that scientists can use to create a target molecule. Because these different synthesis processes use different raw materials and create different byproducts, chemists can use the DOZN™ tool as a quantitative tool to compare the relative greenness of each approach.

Meet the MilliporeSigma chemist who championed this effort and now helps other chemists, including young chemists, think greener.

MIAMI, February 6, 2024 /3BL/ – Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world’s largest cruise company, today announced it is on pace to achieve an overall 18% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity on a lower berth capacity basis in 2024 (compared to 2019) – just a few points shy of its 20% reduction goal originally targeted for 2030. By year end, the company expects to have reduced its GHG emission intensity by an impressive 42% on a lower berth capacity basis since its first benchmark in 2008. The company also expects this performance to put it ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 carbon intensity reduction timeline.

This announcement follows the company’s decision last year to accelerate its stated 2030 GHG intensity reduction goal by four years, committing to at least a 20% cut on a lower berth capacity basis by 2026 (versus 2019 levels). Thanks to the company’s aggressive, longstanding, and ongoing actions to be more energy efficient, reduce overall fuel use, and operate using emission-reducing technologies and lower-emission fuels, Carnival Corporation is producing 10+% less total GHG emissions today than its peak historical year (2011), despite increasing capacity by roughly 30% since that time.

How It’s Being Done

Carnival Corporation is executing on two parallel paths to achieve these significant reductions.

First, the company recognizes that using less fuel is the fastest way to reduce GHG emissions and make a tangible impact. Since cruise ships generate their electricity from fuel, Carnival Corporation set out to uncover every area where energy can be saved and cut the amount of fuel used. As a result, the company has implemented several fuel- and energy-saving innovations and continues to invest in improvements to drive further reductions. This includes:

Upgrading the fleet with innovative technology packages, including modern and efficient HVAC systems, state-of-the-art LED and smart lighting technologies, remote monitoring improvements and more to reduce fuel usage by 5-10% per ship.Optimizing hull design and special coatings to minimize drag for greater fuel efficiency.Developing more energy-efficient itineraries, fine-tuning hydrodynamics, and using ocean currents and techniques such as weather routing and speed reduction where possible.Using shoreside electric power capabilities when available in port – over 60% of the company’s ships are equipped to switch off their engines and “plug in” to local power grids while docked to reduce emissions and noise in port.Installing Air Lubrication Systems (ALS) to help ships glide on a cushion of air bubbles with less friction, reducing fuel use for propulsion by up to 5%.

At the same time, lacking zero-emission fuels broadly available to the maritime industry and with fossil fuels as the only viable option at scale today, Carnival Corporation has continued to look for ways to lower GHG and other emissions from the fuel already used while also pioneering lower-emission alternatives and actively exploring new technologies to power its ships. This includes:

Leading the industry with nine Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-capable ships in service and two more on order. This is delivering immediate GHG reductions, reducing direct carbon emissions by up to 20%, almost eliminating sulfur dioxides and significantly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.Improving air emissions with Advanced Air Quality Systems to “scrub” particulate matter and other compounds from ships’ exhaust.Trialing advanced fuel technologies, including a first-of-its-kind lithium-ion battery storage system, testing fuel cells powered by hydrogen derived from methanol and leading the industry in piloting biofuels as a fossil fuel replacement.

Environmental Commitment

Overall, the company continues to invest significantly in its deep-rooted commitment to protecting its communities, vibrant marine ecosystems, and scenic spaces. This includes ongoing reductions in GHG emissions from its operations and its strategy to pursue net zero emissions from ship operations by 2050 as part of its long-term sustainability vision and commitment to leading the way in sustainable cruising.

The auto sector has undergone a significant transformation, and the result has ushered in the era of the software-defined vehicle. Software has enabled safety, comfort, and sustainability that would have been impossible ten years ago. With the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the emergence of autonomous vehicles (EVs), the auto sector is looking to quickly address challenges and maintain momentum in innovation.

Here are some predictions about what the auto industry will focus on in 2024.

“The Next Frontier in EVs will be prioritizing and predicting battery health,” Jeff Harris, VP Corporate and Portfolio Marketing

As EVs continue to evolve, range anxiety will start to dissipate as 300 miles becomes standard. However, attention will shift to the health of batteries (HoB). With cell phones already illustrating how batteries can deteriorate over time, no driver wants to experience a car that quickly loses power, potentially leaving them stranded or, at the very least, requiring multiple charges per day.

Battery health will become a factor influencing EV buying decisions, presenting an opportunity for auto manufacturers to visualize a car’s health status to reassure and inform drivers. The information will be more granular and incorporate gamification interfaces so drivers can see how their actions influence keeping the battery management system at peak performance. Additionally, by integrating AI algorithms into the system, it will predict the health and performance under various conditions, quelling any concerns.

4 Automotive Innovation Trends Gaining Traction in 2024 from Hwee Yng Yeo, Automotive Solutions Lead

1. Cars run the world: vehicle-to-grid implementation

One of the most significant areas of investment by the public and private sectors is in distributed energy resources. In October 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy announced $3.5 billion to expand wind and solar power capacity, harden power lines against extreme weather, integrate batteries and electric vehicles (EV), and build out microgrids to keep the lights on during power outages. This is part of the $10.5 billion available to expand transmission lines, improve grid resiliency, and deploy “smart-grid” technologies.

EVs will start to become vehicle-to-grid or V2G-enabled, which turns the vehicle into a battery pack capable of bidirectional power flow able to discharge stored electricity back to the grid. However, connecting V2G-enabled EVs to the grid is extremely complex, and distributed energy resource manufacturers for EVs must comply with multiple standards and certification processes before they can go to market as V2G-compliant.

2. Solid-state EV batteries shift from concept to reality

It took solid-state drives (SSD) almost 30 years to become pervasive. However, despite work on solid-state batteries for electric vehicles starting just over a decade ago, they are now in the final stages of fine-tuning, offering automakers an array of benefits, including:

Lighter: A compact and more lightweight battery increases the driving range.

More stable: Unlike Li-ion batteries, which use liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes, typically made of ceramics or polymers. These are more stable and secure, generating a lot less heat than their liquid counterpart.

Faster, more durable: Solid-state batteries can reach 80% charge in 15 minutes and maintain 90% of their capacity after 5,000 charges, unlike lithium-ion, which begins to degrade after 1,000 cycles.

3. Asia Pacific leads the charge

In 2024, research in solid-date batteries will intensify, with market growth led by Asia Pacific followed by Europe and America. For example, South Korea announced a $15 billion investment to commercialize solid-state batteries by 2030. And China’s Guangzhou Automobile Group is pushing an even more aggressive timeline, stating it will roll out all-solid-state batteries in vehicles by 2026!

4. Closing the Gap Toward Fully Autonomous Driving

In November 2023, BMW joined Mercedes to offer SAE Level 3 conditionally autonomous driving. Drivers can legally take their hands off the steering wheel “in certain conditions” but are expected to resume control when prompted, failing which the car will guide itself to a safe stopping place.

In 2024, automakers will continue refining Level 3 self-driving capabilities to make them increasingly available in consumer vehicles. Concurrently, commercializing Level 4 self-driving will continue. However, to minimize the risks and liabilities of self-driving features, numerous iterations of design validation and testing must be done for the sensors and algorithms that are taking over from the human driver. One of the biggest challenges is training the algorithms to handle real-world traffic scenarios, from slow country roads to bustling peak-hour city traffic and one-in-a-million contingencies like a moose crossing the road.

The road ahead

As we enter 2024, EVs are outpacing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for consumers’ preferred vehicles. Moreover, this trend is enabling the transportation sector to dramatically reduce emissions and contribute in profound ways towards slowing the effects of climate change. Keysight’s proven design, emulation, and test solutions are enabling auto manufacturers to address challenges and deliver automotive capabilities to demanding customers faster.
