DEERFIELD, Ill., February 13, 2024 /3BL/ – As a trusted, convenient local healthcare destination that millions of Americans rely on every day, Walgreens is expanding its long-standing relationships with colleges of pharmacy through the formation of the Walgreens Deans Advisory Council to enhance the pharmacy profession and better support pharmacists as they provide valuable care to their local communities.

The new Council, consisting of 17 pharmacy school deans and Walgreens leadership, is sponsored by Rick Gates, Chief Pharmacy Officer at Walgreens, co-chaired by John Colaizzi Jr., PharmD, FNJPhA, Vice President, Pharmacy Practice at Walgreens and Angela Kashuba, Dean, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and Lorri Walmsley, Director, Walgreens Pharmacy Affairs, who will serve as the vice chair.

Pharmacists have been a cornerstone of healthcare in communities across the United States for decades, providing timely interventions and filling gaps in care. While the demand for pharmacy services is expected to increase over the next several years, like many other healthcare entities and a wide range of other industries, pharmacy is facing a pronounced labor shortage.1 Pharmacy school applications were down 22% in 2022-2023 compared to the previous year and have decreased by more than 60% over the past decade.2,3 The pharmacy operating model needs to evolve, and pharmacy school deans are critical partners in helping Walgreens and the industry overall solve for the current workplace challenges that are also impacting pharmacy school enrollment.

“Collaboration within the pharmacy profession has never been more important, and I’m grateful to the many academic leaders who have joined the Deans Advisory Council as we work to transform the future of pharmacy,” said Gates. “I look forward to working with the deans to ensure Walgreens expands our reach beyond neighborhood pharmacies into the fast-growing areas of healthcare and drives outcomes that matter most to our pharmacists, patients and partners.”

Members of the Council will meet quarterly with the goal of identifying ways to attract, recruit and create a dynamic workplace for current and future pharmacists. The Council’s initial objectives include:

Rebuilding the talent pipeline and focusing on recruitment efforts, including through programs that expose high school students to careers in pharmacy.Elevating community pharmacy as a practice setting of choice through direct feedback from colleges.Addressing staffing challenges and helping pharmacists experience greater job satisfaction and better patient interactions.Evolving the community pharmacy business model and advocating for pharmacist practitioner services.Advising on all aspects of community pharmacy strategy, practice and administration-related topics.

“As the recent pandemic highlighted, pharmacists are the most accessible, trusted healthcare providers. They serve as the front door to health in their communities, yet community pharmacy remains one of healthcare’s most underutilized resources,” said Kashuba. “Our schools train pharmacists to fill healthcare gaps and improve patient care through disease screening, prevention and treatment. I’m excited to collaborate with Walgreens to better align workplace conditions with training to transform the future of community pharmacy.”

The Council will serve as a sounding board and play a key role in helping Walgreens build upon recent initiatives deployed by the company to reimagine the community pharmacy operating model. These include; leveraging centralized services and micro-fulfillment, deploying flexible store and staffing models and eliminating all task-based retail metrics from annual performance reviews.

The Council’s first meeting is scheduled for early March 2024.

PARIS, February 13, 2024 /3BL/ – The Consumer Goods Forum’s (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) has received a benchmarking application from amfori Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI). The application marks amfori’s first step in earning SSCI Recognition as meeting industry expectations for third-party social compliance programmes under both the SSCI’s Processing and Manufacturing scope as well as the Primary Production scope.

The SSCI is committed to building trust in sustainability standards by recognising programmes that respect key sustainability criteria, as defined by leading industry stakeholders, in their evaluation methods.

Launched in 2003, amfori BSCI is an impactful methodology that has enabled businesses to exercise human rights due diligence more efficiently and to ensure the protection of workers’ rights in global supply chains.

Representing over 2,400 members in 52 countries, amfori BSCI is leveraged in a variety of sectors, the two largest being General Merchandise, and Garment & Textile with a combined annual turnover that is evaluated to EUR 1.6 trillion.

The amfori BSCI Code of Conduct sets out the values and principles for the implementation of supply chain due diligence, based on the OECD’s six-step framework. Drawn on the rules and principles of the amfori BSCI Code of Conduct, the amfori BSCI System applies to all amfori BSCI audits. The amfori BSCI System Manual is a four-part document that aims to provide system users with rules and processes that will make working conditions more efficient and resilient within one’s business.

Linda Kromjong, President of amfori, said, ‘As a leading business association for sustainable trade, we must lead by example to continue supporting companies across the globe to operate successful and responsible businesses the most efficient way. Collaborations with organisations such as the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) are crucial in this endeavour. For this reason, we are dedicated to working closely with The Consumer Goods Forum’s Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative.’

The SSCI Benchmark is a comprehensive process that recognises which schemes cover key sustainability criteria and applies relevant verification practices. The process revolves around a first self-assessment undertaken by the scheme, followed by a review by an independent expert, office visits, and a public consultation. The methodology also includes opportunities for the applicant to take corrective actions if and when needed.

At the SSCI, we welcome this positive step from Rainforest Alliance and look forward to reviewing its alignment towards industry values on transparency, social responsibility, and sustainability. New hydrogen testing facility at Florence, Italy, manufacturing site unveiled as part of the company’s strategy to further support the deployment of hydrogen-ready technologies, such as the optimized NovaLT™16 turbine delivered to Air Products’ Net-Zero Hydrogen Energy Complex in EdmontonProgress follows delivery of advanced hydrogen compression technologies for NEOM green hydrogen company in Saudi Arabia, as well as new collaborations in the hydrogen sector with HyET and Green Energy Park

FLORENCE, Italy, February 13, 2024 /3BL/ – Baker Hughes (NASDAQ: BKR), an energy technology company, announced Monday several milestones to support the growth of the hydrogen economy, as part of the company’s broader strategy in new energy. The milestones were announced during the 24th Baker Hughes Annual Meeting held in Florence, Italy, and included advancements in the company’s hydrogen enabling technologies, as well as progress in executing several customers’ hydrogen projects and new collaborations in the sector.

The milestones include:

Baker Hughes unveiled a new Hydrogen Testing Facility for validation of its NovaLT™ industrial turbines to run blends all the way up to 100% hydrogen. The new facility includes a test bench to allow full load testing, with complete fuel flexibility up to 100% hydrogen and features a 300-bar pressure and 2,450 kg storage capacity. This infrastructure, aligned to the highest standards of safety and security – which are particularly crucial when dealing with hydrogen – allows Baker Hughes to test turbines in all project conditions, providing customers with enhanced operational confidence. The new Hydrogen Testing Facility will then serve as a hub for Baker Hughes’ collaboration with customers in the growing hydrogen economy. Baker Hughes recently completed manufacturing and testing of its NovaLT™16 hydrogen turbines for Air Products’ Net-Zero Hydrogen Energy Complex in Edmonton, Canada. The NovaLT™16 turbines underwent full load testing at the newly unveiled Hydrogen Testing Facility. This family of turbines can be deployed for a variety of industrial applications, including combined heat and power, as well as for pipeline and gas storage operations. The company also reported progress on another key Air Products’ hydrogen project, with the delivery of the first two trains of advanced hydrogen compression solutions for the NEOM project in Saudi Arabia, the largest green hydrogen project in the world through the equal joint venture of ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM. Baker Hughes recently invested in expanding its manufacturing site in Modon, Saudi Arabia, to further support the delivery of projects in the country, including NEOM, with localized testing and packaging solutions. Both projects are part of the two companies’ long-standing collaboration on hydrogen inaugurated in 2021.

“Baker Hughes’ advanced technology and experience are key elements of our collaboration as Air Products continues to execute some of the largest low- and zero-carbon clean hydrogen megaprojects in the world,” said Dr. Samir J. Serhan, chief operation officer, Air Products. “We are delivering tangible progress with a common goal – to drive the energy transition forward and achieve net-zero targets.”

The company also executed a collaboration agreement with HyET – a company that provides technologies for low-cost, distributed power generation and commercially viable hydrogen production at high pressure – for the development, industrialization and commercialization of an advanced hydrogen compression solution. Baker Hughes signed a memorandum of understanding with Green Energy Park, a vertically integrated renewable energy company with ammonia and hydrogen terminals projects worldwide, and part of Green Energy Park Global group. The agreement aims to set out the principles of the envisaged collaboration between the two companies in multiple areas of the green hydrogen value chain, including production, storage, transportation and utilization of green hydrogen and ammonia-based fuels, as well as exploration of possible co-development of related technologies and projects at the giga-watt scale.

“These low-carbon and carbon-free energy advancements illustrate how the urgency of the energy transition has transformed customer relationships into comprehensive partnerships for innovation across several projects,” said Lorenzo Simonelli, chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes. “There is no path to net-zero without innovation and collaboration, and our work with customers and partners, including Air Products, is proving the validity of the hydrogen economy and of our strategy to invest and develop innovative solutions to cover the entire hydrogen value chain.”

Baker Hughes’ advanced technologies and solutions serve the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to transportation and utilization. The company’s experience in hydrogen projects dates back to the 1910s, and its portfolio includes advanced compressors, gas turbines, valves, centrifugal pumps, non-metallic pipes, hydrogen sensors, monitoring and diagnostics including inspection solutions for hydrogen embrittlement in production and storage, as well as clean power solutions to produce power with hydrogen and hydrogen blends.
