KeyBank recently announced two multi-year Community Impact grants from KeyBank Foundation to nonprofits in Yonkers, NY, a community within the bank’s Hudson Valley/Metro New York market. With one of the highest poverty rates in Westchester County, the grants aim to bring resources to Yonkers students. Both grants align with KeyBank Foundation’s mission to provide skills, education and capabilities to students and young adults that prepare them for fulfilling careers and successful futures.

Westhab awarded $240,000 grant to bring tutoring, college, and career advising to Yonkers teens

Westhab, an organization that provides affordable housing, youth programs, and employment services in New York City and Westchester County, received a three-year $240,000 grant from KeyBank Foundation to create a pipeline to college and careers for low-income students at Dayspring Community Center in Yonkers, NY. Starting September 2024, the program will support thirty 9th to 12th grade students from Dayspring’s youth program in proactively exploring and choosing the post-secondary path that suits them best.

To develop the programming, Westhab will work with the Yonkers Partners In Education (YPIE), a Westchester-based nonprofit with expertise in ensuring students are ready for, enroll, and complete college. Staff will help students academically prepare for college, navigate, and complete the college application process. For students not interested in college, staff will assess teens’ skills and interests and, through partnerships with programmers and guest speakers, help inspire potential career pathways. Participants will be connected to additional support, such as Dayspring’s Employment Services, to help actualize their plans.

“I grew up in Yonkers; this is the kind of investment our neighborhood needs,” shared Dayspring Director JC Soto. “Nodine Hill of Southwest Yonkers (where Dayspring is located) has a poverty rate that is double that of all of Westchester County. Increasing college readiness and providing resources to advance their skills in careers with livable wages will allow teens to earn higher incomes, translating into better life outcomes, including health, wealth, and happiness.”

Over the course of three years, the program hopes to make larger shifts in the trajectory of the community. “This generous investment by KeyBank Foundation will help individual students, but also aims to create a more lasting change in the community by nurturing an ongoing college-ready culture for high school students. “We hope to broaden these teen’s futures and disrupt cycles of inequality that we see in Nodine Hill,” said Mr. Soto.

Groundwork Hudson Valley receives $100,000 grant for Youth Leadership and Sustainability Education Program Expansion in Yonkers

KeyBank Foundation also presented a two-year $100,000 grant to Groundwork Hudson Valley to support the expansion of Groundwork’s Youth Leadership and Sustainability Education Programs. Groundwork Hudson Valley is an environmental justice non-profit working with communities to improve climate resilience and adaptation, promote sustainability education, and nurture the next generation of environmental leaders. KeyBank’s funding will provide out-of-school education for Yonkers NY Public School K-6 students to visit the Science Barge, a floating sustainability education center, and supplement the school system’s science curricula. It will also support its award-winning Green Team, a program that provides paid part-time jobs to Yonkers Public High School students to build their leadership skills and gain hands-on skills in environmental conservation, climate risk mitigation, and community engagement.

“We at Groundwork Hudson Valley are immensely grateful for partners like KeyBank who are committed to creating positive and lasting change and who provide resources to organizations like ours to propel our mission forward for Yonkers youth,” shared Oded Holzinger, Groundwork Hudson Valley’s Executive Director. “This partnership with the KeyBank Foundation exemplifies how we can come together to lay the groundwork and empower our youth to have the knowledge and skills to become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.”

Helping our communities thrive

KeyBank Hudson Valley/Metro New York Market President John Manginelli recently presented grant checks to each organization and spoke about the importance that KeyBank places on investing in the Yonkers community.

“The core of our community commitment is supporting nonprofits that work to improve the lives of disadvantaged members in our local communities through education, workforce development and community investment,” said John. “Our partnerships with Westhab and Groundwork will not only improve the lives and futures of Yonkers’ youth but can help create a ripple effect for real change in underserved neighborhoods throughout the city. KeyBank is proud to support their efforts “

KeyBank Foundations’ grants are part of the bank’s $40 billion community investment plan focused on economic access and equity to communities across the country. The scope of the plan includes investments and lending in affordable housing, home lending, small business lending, green initiatives, and transformative philanthropy targeted toward workforce development, education, and safe, vital neighborhoods for underserved communities and populations.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, February 22, 2024 /3BL/ – Demonstrating its prowess in the global logistics sector, DP World has successfully coordinated the delivery of four monorail cars from the United Kingdom (UK) that will serve as critical pieces of an advanced public transportation project in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This operation highlights the company’s ability to ensure the seamless transportation of goods of all scale and complexity across continents, contributing to an important transportation project aimed at reducing congestion in one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic cities.

The monorail cars, which were produced by Alstom in the UK, began their journey to the Caribbean from DP World’s London Gateway Port. From there, they were loaded onto cargo ships that travelled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean to DP World Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada.

Upon arrival, this specialized cargo was offloaded and reloaded onto a CMA-CGM cargo ship in a single afternoon, before setting sail for the Port of Caucedo in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. In Caucedo, the cars embarked upon the final leg of their journey, as they were offloaded and reloaded onto trucks that drove more than 120 miles (194 kilometers) to Santiago.

The four monorail cars, with capacity for 580 passengers, represent part of an innovative sustainable transportation initiative designed to improve urban mobility in Santiago. The initiative will benefit the Dominican Republic’s local economy and contribute positively to the broader Caribbean economy.

Due to their considerable size and volume, the cars were handled as specialized cargo. This presented unique challenges that were expertly navigated by each DP World team around the globe as the cars made their journey.

Morten Johansen, Chief Operating Officer, DP World Americas, said: “This operation showcased the power of DP World’s global coordination and our capability to solve complex logistical challenges through creative solutions. Our direct, real-time communication and feedback across three countries ensured the efficient and traceable movement of the monorail cars from London, through Canada, and into the Dominican Republic.”

The strategic locations of DP World’s operations were critical to the success of the effort:

At London Gateway, DP World offers a fully integrated logistics hub equipped with state-of-the-art quay cranes, deepwater berths, and rail terminals, which enable the mobilization of 3.6 million TEUs annually.DP World Saint John, strategically placed in the Atlantic Gateway, offers direct access to North America and beyond. With the recent completion of a multi-million-dollar modernization project, the Saint John terminal has the infrastructure and the expertise to handle all types of cargo.DP World’s facilities at the Port of Caucedo are equipped with an expansive berth and modern crane setup, enabling the port to handle 150,000 tons of bulk and project cargo per year and up to 2.5 million TEUs annually. The facilities are adept at handling a vast array of cargo types, including specialized shipments like the monorail cars.

“Our expertise in managing specialized cargo, combined with our teams’ certifications and direct access to major shipping lines, negated the need for any additional charter services or boat rentals,” Johansen said. “This efficiency underscores DP World’s commitment to providing streamlined, cost-effective logistic solutions that support the growth and sustainability of global trade.”

The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy released its ninth U.S. Dairy Sustainability Report on the industry’s strategy, approach and performance across three key pillars: Advance Well-being, Regenerate the Environment, and Care for Animals and Communities.

The comprehensive biennial report showcases the industry’s social responsibility pledge, The U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment, and dives deep into partnerships and progress across the value chain. Dairy companies and processors that have adopted the Stewardship Commitment represent 75 percent of U.S. milk production and follow a rigorous set of standards that demonstrate positive impact. The Stewardship Commitment is also recognized as a national program by the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Sustainable Dairy Partnership (SDP).

“Amid changing expectations and marketplace shifts, the U.S. dairy community has maintained its focus on making positive contributions to a global and sustainable food system that nourishes people, the planet and local communities,” said Barbara O’Brien, President and CEO of the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. “As a result, the industry’s collaboration has catalyzed outcomes that no one company or sector could do alone, and efforts continue at farms, companies and organizations across the industry to further build on this momentum.”

The U.S. dairy community continues to further strategies, programs and tools that support progress at the field, farm and plant levels. Key highlights include the following:

The U.S. dairy industry responded to increased demand for dairy at food banks by distributing more than 1.17 billion pounds of dairy products over two years through the Feeding America network.U.S. dairy is working collectively to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) neutrality by balancing GHG emissions with reductions and removals. Dairy farmers, cooperatives and processors have invested in tools and resources to measure and report Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG reductions at the company level across the value chain. The U.S. Dairy Net Zero Initiative, an industry-wide effort to make sustainable practices and technologies more accessible and affordable for dairy farms of all sizes and geographies, gained significant momentum: 26 projects spanning 338 farms across 19 states are currently underway, and nearly $40 million in funding has supported on-farm pilots and critical research to reduce methane and other GHG emissions, improve soil health, sequester carbon and protect water quality. The globally recognized National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program created by dairy farmers, furthered its programs and resources across Animal Care, Antibiotic Stewardship, Biosecurity, Environmental Stewardship and Workforce Development. In 2024, the program will provide additional refinement to these areas to support dairy farmers in continuing to demonstrate their commitment to best practice implementation of these core social responsibility principles.

The report also includes information about U.S. dairy’s 2050 environmental stewardship goals to achieve GHG neutrality, optimize water use while maximizing recycling and improve water quality by optimizing utilization of manure and nutrients. Progress against each of these goals will be reported every five years, beginning in 2025. This report will not only document progress but also identify technological and other advancements that can accelerate improvements, enabling nimble adaptation and focus on what can be scaled for maximum impact.

To make progress against U.S. dairy’s key priorities and goals, collaboration is key. The Innovation Center’s Dairy Sustainability Alliance® is a nearly 200-member, multi-stakeholder forum where the industry shares knowledge, provides input and collaborates on issues and opportunities impacting U.S. dairy. The Dairy Sustainability Alliance® works to accelerate progress toward common sustainability goals and contribute to the long-term viability of the U.S. dairy industry.
