ATLANTA, Aug 23, 2023 /3BL/ – With a commitment to empowering individuals and building stronger communities, Georgia-Pacific has partnered with the non-profit organization PCs for People to support digital inclusion in underserved areas in Atlanta.

PCs for People provides low-cost internet service, computers, digital education, and responsible e-waste recycling. Over the past 19 years, the organization has distributed over 260,000 computers, subscribed thousands of families to low-cost internet, and recycled millions of pounds of electronics.

As of 2019, more than 12 percent of Fulton County households lack a computer or broadband subscription 1. To address this disparity, Georgia-Pacific and PCs for People strategically placed an antenna on the GP Center tower to bring affordable internet to the English Avenue area on Atlanta’s west side. Residents and nonprofits can now work with PCs for People to acquire discounted internet and computers.

Through our stewardship framework, Georgia-Pacific seeks to make society better through community involvement and philanthropy. By investing in programs that empower people to contribute and prioritizing education, Georgia-Pacific is committed to supporting youth and making a lasting impact in the communities where we operate.

When Stacey Ma was a little girl, her dream was to work with patients as a doctor. “As it turns out, I became an engineer who makes medicine to help patients,” says Stacey, who joined Gilead last summer to lead the Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing (PDM) team as Executive Vice President.

Stacey oversees a group that’s deeply involved in every stage of the process of creating a new medicine. At the earliest stage, PDM’s formulation scientists, process chemists and bioengineers look at a drug candidate and determine such things as whether it can be absorbed by patients or survive being transported and stored and made in sufficient quantities.

If an experimental medicine makes it to the clinical trial stage, PDM teams work to ensure an adequate and high-quality supply. They play a key role in supporting regulatory filings. And if a product is approved, PDM is responsible for delivering an uninterrupted supply of high-quality medicine to people around the world.

“It’s not easy to actually innovate a new medicine,” says Stacey. “It takes all the different disciplinary expertise to come together – and PDM is one area of that.”

As Stacey shares in the video above, Gilead has a long history of strength and speed in PDM. Her team partners closely with Research, Development, Commercial and other functions across the organization to ultimately deliver medicines to people living with some of the world’s most devastating diseases.

“PDM is part of Gilead’s success because of its innovation in creating manufacturing technology that delivers our transformative medicines as quickly as possible to patients,” she says.

The Family Foster house in Wierzbice was created by Jerzy and Maciejka – visual artists and parents with huge hearts. In addition to raising their biological children, they also decided to adopt four children with special needs.

The house where the family lives is generally adapted to their needs. For example, in 2017, Habitat for Humanity Poland helped the family by paving the path around the garden so that wheelchair users could also use it. But after 6 years the premises needed to be refreshed: the garden became overgrown, and the paved walkway became impassable for a wheelchair. In addition, the rear entrance to the property was not usable, due to the family’s inability to keep it in good order, and at some point they no longer had the strength to bring it up to proper condition.

Whirlpool volunteers from all over Poland took part to support this family in Wierzbice. On July 3 and 4, over 20 volunteers, from Radomsko, Wrocław, Łódź and Warsaw, representing all polish locations of Whirlpool Corporation, helped repaint the whole house inside and do all the garden work. Employees worked through intense heat and other challenges and were able to see how different problems people have, what they face on a daily basis, and how life’s priorities change when caring for orphaned, disabled children.

As a result of these two days of work, the team was able to update the house inside, clean it, repaint the rooms and deal with places that were inaccessible to the hosts, in addition to bringing the garden up to scratch, giving the family a lot of pleasant space to enjoy throughout the summer. The family returned the favor with sincere thanks, smiles and a delicious fresh yeast cake with garden strawberries, making everyone feel at home.

“Our action aroused great interest. It exceeded our expectations. We had a huge number of applications from our employees wanting to take part in the action. Therefore, we increased the originally assumed number of volunteers. Already on the spot, our colleagues confirmed great commitment and willingness to help. It is very uplifting and wonderful to be part of such a community and to be able to help those who need it together” – Zygmunt Łopalewski Central Europe Communications & Government Relations Sr. Manager
