Arrow and eInfochips are helping young entrepreneurs in India improve water quality and public health with a smart IOT sensor package enhanced by AI. Now the Saafwater platform is being tested in large cities like Hyderabad where water quality can fluctuate with serious consequences.
Saaf is a Hindi word for “clean” and “pure”.
Saafwater is a startup by young Indian entrepreneurs who want to help provide reliably clean water and reduce health risks for their nation’s 1.4 billion citizens – and billions more worldwide.
Their solution – a smart IOT sensor package enhanced by AI – won the 2021 Call for Code global competition for humanitarian technologies. The contest is supported by Arrow Electronics, charitable partner United Nations Human Rights, Founding Partner IBM, and others.
In 2022, Arrow matched Saafwater with eInfochips, an Arrow-owned design engineering firm with offices and prototyping centers in India. Together, they revised the platform using 4G to amplify the device’s capabilities, allowing for faster real-time data and quicker turnaround for analyzing contaminated water. The new development also makes the device easier to manufacture at scale.
It attaches to water pipes serving an apartment complex, an office building, or a community. Sensors continuously measure the water’s quality and stores the data in the Cloud for analysis. Water utilities and residents receive water quality updates and recommendations via text messages and a smart phone app.
Engineers at eInfochips built five cellular communication boards for the new design, and those units are being field tested during 2023 in the city of Hyderabad, population 11.5 million. Saafwater plans to install hundreds of units in more communities in India within a year.
Saafwater: How it Works and Who it Helps
The 4G enabled communication board built by eInfochips works with the control module created by Saafwater, which detect contaminants – a system that works effortlessly and improves data transmission reliability and speed.
“Two billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. We wish to deploy Saafwater in every village, every town, and every city in the world.”
– Jay Aherkar, co-founder of SaaF Water

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, May 9, 2023, /3BL Media/ – Infinity Recycling, Invest-NL and LyondellBasell announced today they have invested in Pryme N.V., an innovative cleantech company, located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The group of investors contributed nearly EUR 13 million to support the commercialization of Pryme’s pyrolysis process to convert used plastic into valuable products on an industrial scale. Pryme is currently building an advanced recycling plant in Rotterdam that is expected to start production later this year and plans to build a second larger-scale plant in 2025.
“We are excited to welcome this group of strong investors at our side,” said Chris Herve, CEO of Pryme. “Just like earlier investments by Infinity Recycling and Stichting Multistrat opened doors and allowed us to gain important market knowledge, we expect our new investors to each bring valuable experience and perspective to further develop our technology. With this dedicated support comes responsibility and expectation to deliver – a challenge we gladly accept.”
Pryme has developed a new cost-effective approach to pyrolysis that allows used plastic to be recycled with a high conversion rate, on an industrial scale and with a lower carbon footprint. With the new capital, Pryme aims to accelerate the roll-out of this technology to help reduce the amount of plastic being incinerated or ending up in the environment.
Jeroen Kelder, Managing Partner, Infinity Recycling, said: “Infinity Recycling is pleased to announce that it has successfully assembled a strong consortium of investors to support its portfolio company Pryme in its next phase of growth. We are proud to have facilitated this important milestone for Pryme and are confident that this backing will be instrumental in its continued success.”
Elisabeth Storm de Grave, Principal at Invest-NL, said: “We are pleased to invest in Pryme in close cooperation with our portfolio fund Infinity Recycling and LyondellBasell. This investment round is a significant milestone for scaling up Pryme’s advanced recycling capacities, which are critical to address those parts of the plastic waste streams that cannot be recycled through mechanical technologies. It clearly underlines the strong position of the Netherlands to address the plastic waste crisis.”
“With increasing demand from society and customers for more circular products, we are thrilled to invest in fast-growing companies like Pryme to support the scale-up of new advanced recycling commercial operations and reduce the volume of used plastic sent to incineration,” said Martino Gabellich, LyondellBasell Vice President Advanced Recycling and Low Carbon Solutions. “This investment supports our strategy to grow our circular and low carbon solutions , as we intend to use part of the pyrolysis oil produced from this new Pryme facility in our planned integrated hub in Cologne, Germany.”

COLUMBUS, Ind., May 9, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Global power leader Cummins Inc. recently signed a definitive agreement with Tata Motors Limited to manufacture a range of low- to zero-emissions technology products in India over the next few years.
The agreement was signed by Jennifer Rumsey, Cummins’ President and Chief Executive Officer, and Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors, at Cummins’ headquarters in Columbus, Indiana (U.S.). It was announced late last month.
Tata Motors and Cummins have a 30-year strong partnership through their joint venture Tata Cummins Private limited (TCPL) in India, established in 1993. The signing of this definitive agreement further strengthens their relationship and is a step forward from the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organizations in November 2022 to collaborate on the design and development of low- and zero-emissions propulsion technology solutions for commercial vehicles in India.
As a part of this agreement, Cummins and Tata Motors Limited have set up a new business entity called TCPL Green Energy Solutions Private Limited (GES), a wholly owned subsidiary under the existing joint venture, with a focus on the development and manufacturing of sustainable technology products.
These products will include hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, fuel delivery systems, as well as battery electric powertrains and fuel cell electric systems through the Accelera by Cummins brand.
The low- to zero-emissions technologies developed by TCPL GES will be integrated into both on-highway and off-highway applications for domestic and international markets. This agreement will play a pivotal role in developing sustainable powertrain solutions that will help in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and supporting India’s net zero ambitions.
“Progress requires partnership, and I am delighted that we are embarking on this decarbonization journey with our trusted partner of 30 years – Tata Motors,” Rumsey said after signing the agreement. “Together, we will advance low- and zero-emissions technologies in a way that is best for our customers, communities, and the planet.”
Wagh is also excited about the partnership.
“Tata Motors is leading the global megatrend of green, smart and safe mobility in India,” Wagh said. “Our goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2045 in the commercial vehicles segment. We are collaborating with partners who believe in this vision and are delighted to further strengthen our three-decade long association with Cummins Inc.”
