MetLife Foundation and the Arbor Day Foundation Partner To Improve Global Forests and Communities Through Tree Planting

LINCOLN, Neb., February 28, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Over the next two years, MetLife Foundation will support Arbor Day Foundation planting projects in forests and communities of greatest need in Europe. Beginning in 2023, over 100,000 trees will be planted across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom. The partnership aims to increase the resiliency of these areas to the effects of climate change.

“The climate crisis is a shared global problem, one that’s going to take a strategic, collective effort to solve,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The world needs trees now more than ever, and organizations like MetLife Foundation are stepping up alongside other sustainability leaders in the public and private sector to turn conversations into meaningful action.”

For the past 50 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has helped to plant nearly 500 million trees in forests and communities around the world. Through a global network of partnerships, the Arbor Day Foundation facilitates projects that empower organizations of all sizes to reach their sustainability goals via measurable, impactful work through trees and forests. The Foundation recently announced an initiative to plant 500 million trees by June 2027 in forests and communities that need them most.

Since 2017, MetLife Foundation has worked with the Arbor Day Foundation on a variety of tree stewardship projects, including reforestation efforts in national and state forests, community tree distribution campaigns, and urban planting events that engage MetLife volunteers around the world. This work has been guided by the principles laid out through the MetLife Foundation’s 10-year, $10 million commitment to environmental causes and is aligned to its resilient communities portfolio, which provides support for projects that positively impact environmental causes. To date, MetLife Foundation has supported efforts to plant and distribute nearly 450,000 trees alongside the Arbor Day Foundation.

“In addition to providing a natural solution for many universal issues, planting trees is one of the best ways to increase environmental stewardship among a global community,” said Nuria Garcia, regional president, MetLife EMEA and MetLife Foundation board member. “Protecting our most vulnerable communities and providing them with the tools they need to persevere through disaster is at the core of what we’ve been doing as an organization for more than 150 years. Our ongoing approach towards climate action and sustainability includes a comprehensive agenda of environmental, health, and safety considerations that serve as our guiding principles in operating as a responsible corporate citizen.”

Arbor Day Foundation and Trees Atlanta Bring Together Corporate, Local Resources for Planting Event in Honor of Late U.S Representative John Lewis

LINCOLN, Neb., February 27, 2023 /3BL Media/ – A tree planting event was held on February 24 and 25 to honor John Lewis’ legacy and add to the flowering forest that is growing in his memory in Atlanta, Georgia. Trees Atlanta, along with other Atlanta-based organizations, hosted the annual community planting event with support from the Arbor Day Foundation and its corporate partners International Paper, UPS, and WestRock.

“We are grateful to have been a part of this event honoring Representative Lewis and are inspired by the passion and commitment of our long-time planting partner, Trees Atlanta,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Community projects like this help the Arbor Day Foundation bring our mission to life and remind us just how essential trees are to the beauty, health, and prosperity of cities and towns around the world.”

The annual planting event was started in 2021 when the first 300 trees were planted in Freedom Park. Each year, community members can sign up to volunteer to help plant flowering trees and shrubs along the John Lewis Freedom Parkway in Atlanta. The native tree species that were planted were specifically chosen to bloom in late winter to celebrate the late Civil Rights leader’s birthday and add color along the parkway as a welcome to Spring.

“Hundreds of people from many communities help to plant and nurture the Flowering Forest. This collaborative effort is a beautiful example of Congressman Lewis’s belief that committed and determined people make a difference by working together,” said Greg Levine, co-executive director and chief program officer of Trees Atlanta. Trees Atlanta is a member organization of the Alliance for Communities Trees through the Arbor Day Foundation.

World Environment Center Launches Challenge: “Empower Innovation Challenge” Inspire and Design the Future

February 27, 2023 /3BL Media/ – The World Environment Center (WEC) and its partners, Núcleo de Biotecnología de Curauma (NBC) and Baastel, will develop a series of competitions in Latin American and Caribbean countries called “Empower Innovation Challenge” (EIC) to support the expansion of the development model “La RED de Innovación e Impacto (La RED).”

The invitation to participate in the first EIC competition will be from March 1st to March 20th, 2023 at https://www.EICLaRed.org/ for organizations that develop activities aimed at empowering micro, small and medium-sized enterprises led by women in 10 Latin American countries.

Qualified Organizations that wish to apply must be from the following countries: Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The sectors targeted by the competition range from agriculture, fishing, sustainable tourism, creative services technologies, light and small manufacturing, as well as textiles. The participating projects must focus on generating local solutions that support green and blue economies with a focus on vulnerable groups, providing training, providing access to capital opportunities, networking, and promoting access to valuable chains in local and international companies.

“The organizations that developed this initiative are planning to launch a series of three challenges that will allow us to select innovative solutions to enhance the development of MSMEs managed by women and that generate more inclusive growth in each of the participating countries,” said Ernesto Samayoa, Project Director of WEC Latin America.

The participating projects may come from civil society organizations, educational institutions, centers focused on the development of small business, organizations dedicated to implementing and promoting cleaner production, and the private sector in general. A multidisciplinary panel composed of local associations will be created to select the challenge winners. The challenges will generate alliances with chambers, trade associations, and different representative institutions from each country to make the process more transparent. Three EICs will be held each year starting in 2023 to select up to 24 winners. Winners will receive non-reimbursable funds of up to a maximum of US$50,000 per project and will also have the opportunity to become members of the La RED de Innovación e Impacto network.

This initiative is funded by the U.S. Department of State (DoS) through the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues (S/GWI) 2021 Global Equity and Equality Action (GEEA) Fund and implemented by the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs Policy Planning Coordination Office (WHA/PPC)
