Centrus Signs Agreement with KHNP and POSCO International for Potential Investment in American Uranium Enrichment
Provides Further Validation of and Market Demand for Centrus’ Technology
Provides a Framework for Future Private Investments to Support Enrichment Expansion
BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Centrus Energy (NYSE American: LEU) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and POSCO International to explore potential investment to support expansion of Centrus’ uranium enrichment plant in Piketon, Ohio. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan attended the signing of the agreement, which is aimed at deepening U.S.-Korea cooperation on civilian nuclear energy. Centrus and KHNP also agreed to an increase in the supply volume of enriched uranium under the contract they signed in February 2025.
“We are proud to be strengthening our relationship with our partners in Korea in support of our work to restore America’s ability to enrich uranium at a large scale,” said Centrus President and CEO Amir Vexler. “This agreement reflects strong demand for a U.S.-owned uranium enrichment capability and another potential avenue for private investment capital to bring added supply diversity and competition to the marketplace – and meet Korea’s need for affordable, reliable fuel supplies for both new and existing reactors.”
Centrus and KHNP finalized a supply contract in February 2025 to support construction of new uranium enrichment capacity at Centrus’ American Centrifuge Plant in Ohio. The two companies today agreed to a higher supply volume of Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) under that contract. The entire supply commitment, including the expanded volumes, is contingent upon Centrus receiving the necessary federal funding to build the new LEU production capacity.
Centrus is competing for funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to expand U.S. enrichment capacity. This federal investment is crucial to achieving economies of scale and enabling a U.S.-owned enrichment capacity to compete against foreign, state-owned enterprises that currently have almost 100% of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity. Centrus is committed to matching federal funds with substantial private capital and utility purchase commitments as part of a public-private partnership.
Today’s MOU, which is non-binding, is aimed at facilitating additional private sector capital to support the potential expansion of Centrus’ enrichment capacity in Ohio. The agreement also calls for the companies to explore additional opportunities for cooperation, such as additional supply agreements for LEU as well as High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) for next generation reactors.
Korea represents one of the largest potential export markets for U.S. enriched uranium and is leading the development and construction of new reactors around the world. With 26 nuclear reactors in operation and four under construction, KHNP is the world’s third largest nuclear plant operator. POSCO International, a global leader in international trading and energy infrastructure development, is working to develop a next-generation High-Temperature Gas Reactor powered by HALEU.

ALPD: New York Outbreak Highlights Need for Comprehensive Solutions that begin at the Source
WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — With the number of confirmed Legionnaires’ Disease cases rising in New York as well as the death toll, it is time for policy makers to address the problem at its source, according to the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires Disease.
Since July 25, 2025, more than 108 individuals have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease in Central Harlem. Tragically, six individuals have died. Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by the waterborne bacteria legionella found naturally in source water and soil. If not properly treated and filtered, legionella can escape water treatment plants, entering water distribution systems, and ultimately infecting building, facility, and home water systems where humans can become exposed. Proactive and comprehensive measures must be taken to address legionella from source-to-tap if we are going to succeed in preventing the serious disease it causes.
“The current policies are not working,” said Bob Bowcock, Alliance Board Member and water expert who founded Integrated Resource Management. “What is needed is a comprehensive approach that recognizes the waterborne pathogens infiltrate homes and buildings through the water supply. Focusing only on end use is only going to lead to more outbreaks and more deaths.”
Local Law 77 passed a decade ago, mandates registration, inspection, cleaning, disinfection, and testing of certain water-using equipment in buildings. However, despite these measures, the city continues to face elevated cases and outbreaks that remain unabated, impacting economically disadvantaged areas the most. The singular emphasis on end-user equipment is reactionary once the bacteria has already entered premise plumbing systems rather than a comprehensive or preventative water-quality strategy.
In a recent op-ed in the New York Daily News (https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/08/24/erin-brockovich-harlem-legionnaires-disease-demands-real-action/), environmental activist Erin Brockovich wrote: “We need to move from reaction to prevention, and that means covering the whole water system from source to tap. New Jersey recently passed a law to require water management programs for both water utilities and buildings, stronger investigations, public education, and case tracking. Illinois has similar rules to mitigate risks upstream…Even the NYS Department of Health has issued a guide to reduce risk of exposure to Legionella bacteria at home and I couldn’t agree more that the public deserves far greater education, awareness and transparency related to this disease and the waterborne bacteria that causes it.”
Further, numerous studies[i] have found a clear link between periods of heavy rainfall and an increased risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease. Intense rain creates environmental conditions that support the growth and spread of legionella bacteria. On July 14, New York City experienced heavy rain and flash flooding, with Mayor Eric Adams reporting that Harlem experienced some of the heaviest rainfall during the event. The City’s Department of Environmental Protection called it one of the most intense rainstorms since Hurricane Ida. Given the well-documented connection between rainfall and Legionnaires’ cases, New York City should carefully examine the likelihood that this storm disrupted the water distribution system by dislodging and dispersing legionella bacteria, contributing to the current outbreak with cases first diagnosed 11 days after (incubation period for Legionnaires’ disease is 10-14 days).
“This disease is preventable,” Bowcock said. “But prevention begins at the water source and distribution system through proactive monitoring, management, and treatment to prevent the spread of the bacteria as water moves through the system to the end user. It is time to stop pretending that legionella bacteria magically fly through the air. It is spread through water and so logically the way to stop it is in the source of our water. The Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease calls on New York to look to the recent actions taken by its neighbors in New Jersey who passed a comprehensive, source-to-tap law for Legionnaires’ disease prevention which takes effect in May 2026, and craft a workable policy that will stop these outbreaks and protect New York residents.”
The CDC reports that there are more than 8,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported annually, with individual cases comprising 96% and outbreaks accounting for only 4%. One in ten individuals who contract Legionnaires’ disease will die from it and the fatality rate is higher among more susceptible populations.

Hockinson School District Rolls Out New Tool To Boost Student Achievement
CHARLOTTE, N.C., August 25, 2025 /3BL/ – Starting in the 2025-26 school year, Washington State’s Hockinson School District (HSD) is partnering with Otus and Discovery Education to better track student learning and growth. This new collaboration will help educators make timely, data-informed decisions about what is working in the classroom so students can get the most out of instructional time.
Since its founding in 1870, HSD has focused on preparing all students for future success. Currently, the district’s talented team serves approximately 2,000 students in the district’s elementary, middle, and high schools. HSD’s educators and staff seek to inspire all students to live with strong core values and become competent, responsible learners by developing independent thinkers who can positively contribute to our changing world.
HSD selected the Otus platform because it provides teachers with past and current academic data from a host of sources, including insights from district-wide edtech solutions such as Mystery Science by Discovery Education, which is currently used in HSD classrooms. Using this data, HSD educators are able to set achievable goals for each student and support students more effectively by grouping students with similar needs for focused instruction.
As strong communication between families and schools plays a key role in student success, the HSD team sought a solution that would support the school-to-home connection. The Otus platform will make it easier for families to stay informed about their child’s learning by providing clear updates, easy-to-read progress reports, and visual tools that show how their child is growing over time.
This new collaboration also helps save HSD money by replacing several tools with one that centralizes assessment, grading, data analytics, and progress monitoring in one place. To secure a lower annual cost, the HSD team customized the service package to choose only the features that fit the needs of Hockinson students and staff. As Hockinson School District makes budget adjustments in response to Washington State’s funding shortfall, the district is focusing resources on student programs and academic achievement.
“Integrating Otus into our district solutions provides educators with the data they need in an easy-to-read format, enhancing their ability to support students effectively,” said Steve Marshall, Superintendent of Hockinson School District. “Additionally, Otus will help strengthen our connection with caregivers by keeping families informed of student progress. We are excited to have teachers begin to use this new resource as it will improve their ability visualize student progress in one place and quickly adjust instruction to improve outcomes in a thoughtful, cost-effective manner.”
HSD educators using Otus will receive dedicated professional development from Otus’ team of professional learning experts. Through these interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional learning increases student engagement and supports the continued academic development of all students.
“This unique new collaboration with Otus is a powerful opportunity for Hockinson School District to combine high-quality learning solutions with real-time data analysis to best serve students and educators,” said Jessica Lasher, the Senior Educational Partnerships Manager at Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is proud to help Hockinson School District enhance district educators’ ability to interpret data and deliver life-long results for their community.”

American Solar Energy Society Shares SOLAR 2025 Takeaways and Invites the Public to Join the National Solar Tour in Neighborhoods Across the Country in October and SOLAR 2026 in Austin, Texas
BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The American Solar Energy Society (ASES) hosted SOLAR 2025, the 54th annual National Solar Conference on August 4-6, 2025, at the University of Colorado Boulder. The conference brought together thought leaders, innovators, policymakers, researchers, and advocates from across the renewable energy community to share ideas, inspire innovation, and build momentum for the clean energy transformation.
This year’s theme, “Innovation for Universal Renewable Energy Access,” set the stage for conversations on climate resilience, energy justice, and the technologies driving us toward a more sustainable future. Attendees arrived curious at the state of the industry given recent federal changes, and went away feeling that solar is here to stay. The industry is strong enough to persist without federal subsidies and still requires support at the local and state levels. Attendees engaged in dynamic sessions, expanded interactive poster sessions, hands-on workshops, ASES’ first-ever career fair, and networking opportunities that fostered collaboration across sectors.
Throughout the conference, several recurring themes emerged, underscoring the breadth and urgency of today’s renewable energy transformation. Presentations and discussions highlighted the growing importance of policies that ensure equitable access to energy, particularly for low-income families and communities. Innovations in agrivoltaics, including approaches that integrate solar with crops, livestock, and natural habitats, showed how solar can enhance rather than compete with agricultural and ecological systems. Building-integrated solar and grid advancements demonstrated how renewable energy is shaping both our infrastructure and our daily lives. Sessions also explored tipping points for solar, wind, and batteries, as well as the global forces driving the transition–policy and geopolitics, climate and sustainability risks, artificial intelligence, energy transition financing, critical minerals competition, and the rapid growth of cleantech industries.
The conference concluded with a call to action: governments, companies, and the general public must work together to embed transparency, inclusiveness, and good governance into every level of the renewable energy sector. This includes policy frameworks, procurement processes, investment practices, and community advocacy.
Thank You to Our Community

Marathon Petroleum’s Galveston Bay Refinery Earns Gold for Green Belt Conservation Efforts
Key Points
- Galveston Bay refinery’s Green Belt has been recognized as Gold Certified by WHC Certification®, powered by Tandem Global, for its growing network of conservation habitats.
- Employees have brought the Green Belt to life over the years by restoring wetlands, planting native trees and creating safe spaces for birds, pollinators and more.
- With support from Trees For Houston and other partners, the refinery keeps expanding its environmental efforts and making room for nature to thrive.
Marathon Petroleum’s Galveston Bay refinery (GBR) has earned national recognition for its employee-driven efforts to restore and protect natural spaces across its site.
The refinery’s Green Belt Nature Conservation Habitats were recently designated as Gold Certified by WHC Certification®, powered by Tandem Global, one of the highest honors in corporate conservation. Only a small percentage of WHC Certification’s more than 600 global conservation programs receive this top-tier recognition.
“The Green Belt effort started with a simple idea to create spaces where people and wildlife could thrive side by side,” said Regina Cooper, Senior Training Specialist at the Galveston Bay refinery and co-lead of the Wildlife Habitat Team. “Earning gold status is validation of years of hands-on work and passion from employees who care deeply about this site and the environment around it.”
That same passion continues to fuel conservation work across the refinery. Over the years, a dedicated group of employee volunteers has rolled up their sleeves to restore wetlands, plant pollinator gardens, install bird nesting boxes and bat houses, and turn underused land into spaces where nature can thrive.
That work keeps growing through partnerships with organizations like Trees For Houston, a local nonprofit dedicated to planting, protecting and promoting trees. More than 150 native trees have been added to the refinery’s Cooper’s Landing over the past two years, led by the Wildlife Habitat Team.
Earlier this year, Barry Ward, executive director of Trees For Houston, said this about the partnership: “Partnering with organizations like Marathon Petroleum allows us to expand our reach and create sustainable green spaces where they are needed most,” he said. “These trees will provide long-term benefits, from improving air quality to creating a habitat for local wildlife for years to come.”
The planting events were made possible through a grant from Marathon Petroleum, with support from Trees For Houston staff who helped transport and position the trees. Volunteers from the refinery, along with contractors, community partners and students, have all taken part in the ongoing effort. The Wildlife Habitat Team hopes to continue building on this momentum by expanding green spaces and advancing sustainability efforts across the site.
“Congratulations to the entire GBR team for this well-deserved recognition and for turning this conservation effort into a golden achievement,” said Honor Sheard, Refining Environmental, Safety and Security Director at the Galveston Bay refinery. “This is the latest example of how our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and community collaboration continues to drive meaningful progress and lasting impact.”
