At Marathon Petroleum’s (MPC) refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Donna Davis is known not just for her role as the supply chain director but for her deep commitment to service. An Army veteran, Davis leads with heart, purpose and a strong belief in the power of giving to others.

Since joining MPC in 2009, Davis has focused on building relationships with others, from mentoring and supporting fellow veterans to building partnerships with vendors that help keep refinery operations running safely and efficiently. She credits the support of MPC and her team for her ability to serve others.

A recognized leader

During his time as vice president of refining at the Catlettsburg refinery, Jay Richert, now vice president of refining at MPC’s Garyville, Louisiana, refinery, worked closely with Davis. He witnessed firsthand her commitment to continuous improvement and her ability to lead with intention.

“She truly cares about people, whether it’s her team, her community or her fellow veterans,” Richert said. “She leads with purpose, always looking for ways to make a difference and better the lives of those around her. I was grateful to have her on my leadership team. She made a difference every day.”

That daily difference is something echoed by the refinery’s current vice president, Nate Franckowiak, who works with Davis today and continues to see her impact up close.

“Donna brings a unique combination of operational excellence and deep-rooted community commitment to everything she does,” Franckowiak said. “She sets a high standard, not just for performance, but for how we show up for one another and for our community.”

A champion for veterans

Davis plays an active role in HONOR, MPC’s Veterans Employee Network Group, helping organize events such as veterans’ picnics, flag-laying ceremonies and donation drives to support local veteran homes.

“Supporting our veterans is something I’m really passionate about,” she said. “It feels good to give back to those who’ve done so much for our country.”

Her commitment goes far beyond the refinery. She volunteers with multiple organizations and programs focused on honoring, assisting and empowering veterans:

  • Holiday for Heroes: Partners with local American Legion posts and HONOR, to deliver care bags to VA hospitals and veteran homes in West Virginia

CGC Asks Visiting U.S. Cabinet Officials To ‘Work Together to Solve the Energy Crisis in Alaska and Beyond’

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In a full-page ad in the Anchorage Daily News yesterday, the Coalition for Green Capital (CGC), a national green bank that received $5 billion in funding from the federal government last year, warned that “the nation needs more energy” and asked three Cabinet members visiting Alaska to “work together to solve the energy crisis in Alaska and beyond.”

The ad was in the form of an open letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin.

It cited CGC’s network partner Spruce Root, a Community Development Financial Institution in the southeastern Alaska. “Investments in such partners are multiplied many times with private capital,” the ad said.

CGC, however, has faced obstacles. The EPA earlier this year tried to terminate CGC’s contract under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, awarded under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and has frozen the organization’s account at Citibank. CGC has challenged the termination in federal district court and won a preliminary injunction, which is now under appeal.

“We shouldn’t be at cross purposes. CGC has common ground with Administrator Zeldin’s Powering the Great American Comeback initiative, and we want to move as fast as we can,” said the ad placed by the CGC, which over more than a decade has developed a network of green banks and community lenders.

The ad explained the current energy crisis this way: “The grid is a century old, demand is soaring, capacity can’t keep up, and Americans are suffering as their utility bills rise. For Alaskans, it’s worse. Many communities will never have a grid connection. They’re using expensive and unreliable diesel and paying three to five times the national average for electricity.”

CGC has a solution to financing projects needed to eliminate the crisis, said the ad: “Distributed, smaller-scale projects are often the cheapest and fastest way to add power. That’s why Congress asked us to help finance them.”

The organization called on the three Cabinet officials to work with CGC and bring public and private capital together work together “to unlock capital and enhance U.S. energy infrastructure.”

NEW YORK, June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — With U.S. birthrates plummeting and IVF on the rise, Nucleus Genomics today launched Nucleus Embryo, the first genetic optimization software that lets parents see and understand a complete genetic profile to select an embryo.

Nucleus Embryo is an important step toward complete data ownership for parents planning their families.

As political resistance to climate action grows in the U.S., the European Union continues to push forward. A new omnibus proposal aims to streamline though not weaken regulatory reporting requirements for multinational companies, with a growing focus on Scope 3 emissions.

While the U.S. continues to debate language and roll back regulatory ambition, international markets including Brazil, China, Switzerland, Nigeria, and Singapore — are already phasing in mandatory Scope 3 disclosures. The EU’s CSRD and CSDDD frameworks are expected to apply to any non-EU companies with over $450 million in EU revenue by 2029.

Net Impact’s Inaugural SF Climate Week Event Discusses How To Decarbonize the California Energy Grid

June 4, 2025 /3BL/ – Net Impact, in partnership with PG&E, welcomed more than 150 attendees to its first-ever SF Climate Week event on April 24, 2025, with an additional 85 attendees tuning in virtually. The event, titled “Plugging into the Future: Decarbonizing California’s Energy Grid,” highlighted PG&E’s leading work to decarbonize the state’s energy grid and featured impact professionals working to decarbonize the transportation sector.

The event kicked off with PG&E Corporation’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer, Carla Peterman, who shared the company’s strategies toward achieving a net-zero energy system, including an innovative vehicle to grid pilot program, which aims to build grid resilience by allowing EV batteries to send power back to the grid.

Finding Her Future in a Tech-Forward Career

Tiffany Paovella was running a restaurant in her hometown of Ossining, New York, when she realized that the ups and downs of the food service industry were becoming less palatable to her. As a mother of three teenagers, Paovella wanted a steadier career to provide for her family and allow her husband to stop working nights.

So, Paovella took a part-time job at the local library and decided to build on her associate’s degree to earn an online bachelor’s degree. Then she discovered Verizon Skill Forward while on social media. “I saw an ad that said, apply if you would like to learn about STEM courses that are available for free,” Paovella says. “And I was like, if it’s for free, it’s for me.”

After a quick and easy enrollment process, Paovella found that Skill Forward’s online courses easily fit into her busy schedule and she was impressed by the variety of the offerings. “When I started exploring [Skill Forward], it was easy to navigate,” she says. “I didn’t believe what I was seeing. I saw all the different schools and thought, ‘There’s no way they’re offering real certificates all in one spot.’”

Paovella dove right in, determined to take advantage of the year of free, unlimited online classes that Skill Forward offers. She has earned six professional certifications so far — most of them from a prominent tech company and one from Harvard. “I’ve gained computer science knowledge that I never would’ve had the access to before,” she says. “I learned how to speak computer languages that I didn’t even know existed.”

Paovella has also discovered genuine excitement for the more tech-leaning aspects of the Verizon Skill Forward courses. In fact, her curiosity and joy for learning have inspired her to explore an even broader range of STEM-related topics, such as AI and cybersecurity.

But it’s the real-world application of her newfound knowledge that Paovella says she most appreciates. She’s using her new skills at work, helping library patrons with tech difficulties. And even now, while she’s earning a master’s degree in library sciences, Paovella also has her eye on working in the tech industry, thanks to what she’s learned from Skill Forward.

“All these skills are useful and play into getting a job in this field,” she explains. “The more you have, the more beneficial. This is the future and where the demand is.”
