How Suncor Changemaker Is Supporting Communities Through Kindness

Bukola Ojemakinde, co-lead of Mosaic, Suncor’s Black employee inclusion network, is passionate about volunteering in her community. Since her foray into volunteering, a passion that was ignited after being involved in the Suncor Sun Riders, an employee-led team dedicated to fighting cancer, she has founded two organizations that support and help immigrant women, and been recognized as a SunCares Changemaker for her dedication to these organizations and community.

“Sometimes you don’t know you have a certain passion or talent until it’s activated,” says Bukola Ojemakinde, a Field Production Engineer in Training at Suncor’s Firebag site. “When I came to Suncor as a co-op student in 2016, my passion for volunteering was ignited after being involved in the Suncor Sun Riders, an employee-led team dedicated to fighting cancer, and it never left me.”

Although she didn’t know how to ride a bike, Bukola dove in with the community spirit helping to raise money, cheering on the cyclists, giving them water, and bringing her family in on the experience to “catch that volunteering bug.”

It was that serendipitous moment that kindled Bukola’s passion for volunteering and community involvement. Since then, Bukola has founded two organizations. The Ladies in the Family Foundation (LIFF), which builds relationships among immigrant women with a focus on Black women and girls, to increase their economic, social and emotional wellness; and the Bridge to Oasis Foundation (BTO), which supports and empowers seniors in the Black and African communities to be active and socially engaged, by supplementing the care provided by their family members.

While she doesn’t do this work for validation or fame, her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Earlier this month, Bukola received the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for her outstanding contribution in the community, presented by Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Bukola was also recognized as a SunCares Changemaker in 2022 for her dedication to her organizations and community. The Changemakers program recognizes and celebrates five employees who positively impact community throughout the year in significant ways. Each Changemaker chooses a community organization to receive a one-time donation of $20,000 from Suncor or the Suncor Energy Foundation. Through our employee giving program, SunCares, Bukola also receives $2,000 per year for volunteering to donate to her organizations.

“Working at Suncor has prepared me in a lot of ways to run these foundations and has taught me to do things effectively and manage my time,” says Bukola. “Of course, I appreciate the SunCares dollars and Changemakers donations, but it is more important for me to spread kindness. Kindness is a currency that we can all use to improve and better serve our communities.”

Bukola understands the need to serve women, children, the 2SLGBTQ+ community, seniors, persons with disabilities, immigrant families or the sick and vulnerable.
“We often hear ‘less is more’ but in community service ‘more is more’. With more people serving in volunteering capacities, we can engage communities better and address critical needs as they arise,” she explains.

Late last year Bukola added co-lead of Suncor’s Black employees’ inclusion network, Mosaic, to her impressive volunteering resume. She says she is looking forward to understanding the needs of Suncor’s Black community and how she can contribute to the network and the inclusive support system they’ve started.

“I want to shine a light on how valuable volunteering is in and out of the workplace,” says Bukola. “Some people do it because they want to get work experience or to put it on their resume. Some do it for connections and to make a positive impact on the lives of others. No matter what, who or why people choose to volunteer, my wish is for them to get out there, be genuine and appreciate the journey.”

Paychex Ranks Fifth on List of World’s Best Training Organizations

Paychex, Inc., a leading provider of integrated human capital management software solutions for human resources, payroll, benefits, and insurance services, has been recognized as one of the top training organizations in the world with a 2023 Training APEX Award presented by Training magazine. Paychex ranked number five on the prestigious list for the second year in a row. This is the company’s 22nd consecutive appearance on the list that identifies organizations that excel at training and employee development.

“It’s an honor to be ranked among the best organizations from around the world for our commitment to developing innovative training programs for our employees. In 2022, Paychex seized the opportunity to invest in our employees with new learning and development programs that focused on the five dimensions of well-being as well as knowledge and skills-based learning designed to meet the needs of our workforce,” said Karen McClendon, chief human resource officer at Paychex. “This recognition by Training validates the culture of learning that we work so hard to cultivate at Paychex and the success of our extensive and innovative programs.”

The Training APEX Awards ranking is determined by assessing a range of qualitative and quantitative factors, including demonstrated innovation and financial investment in employee development, the scope of development programs, and how closely such development efforts are linked to business goals and objectives. Winners demonstrate peak performance in employee training and development and organizational success.

The training programs recognized as part of the company’s overall successful learning and development program included the following:

The Paychex Well-being Program: To support employee health and well-being, the Paychex training team developed a program that addressed environmental and cultural factors that influence the five dimensions of well-being: physical, emotional, financial, career, and community. The program included more than 80 company-wide Well-being Champions to support and coach, interactive activities, self-led resources, external seminars, internal events, and community service opportunities. As a result, an increase in the number of Paychex employees surveyed shared that the organization cared about their health and well-being from the previous year. Paychex also experienced a year-over-year decrease in the absence timeframe for the duration of short-term disability leave. The Strategic Consultant Academy: This six-week hybrid program was developed for new Client Advocates and Relationship Managers for the Paychex Professional Employer Organization (PEO) as an experiential learning program that combined a multitude of self-study learning resources, virtual instructor-led touchpoints, and shadowing with an assigned mentor. The goal was to drive consultative and strategic relationships with PEO clients to help grow their businesses—something measured by worksite employee growth. This program, in addition to other strategies, resulted in an increase in year-over-year growth of worksite employees with PEO clients.Refreshed New Hire Learning Program Content: This strategic initiative focused on the curation of the modules of the company’s 20+ new hire training programs. 69 individual modules were reviewed and vetted for accuracy and relevancy and repurposed into four new eLearning modules called PAYX101: Paychex Foundations. The series was designed for any Paychex employee, regardless of role and averaged a review rating of 4.5 out of 5 from new employees that completed the program.

The company is also committed to helping business owners succeed with employee training and development, offering a cloud-based learning management system (LMS) called Paychex Learning Essential and Paychex Learning Enhanced. With the two Paychex LMS options, employers can choose the training material they want to provide and make it available to workers when and where they need it. The tool includes on-demand training courses for onsite and remote employees, training course libraries that meet the demands of any workplace, and agile courses through Paychex Flex®.

The complete Training APEX Awards list is available in the March issue of Training magazine and on trainingmag.com.

Duke Energy To Help Customers Go 100% Renewable

Expanded offerings for Green Source Advantage allows path to 24×7 renewable energy, and option for energy storageCompany proposes renewable program for residential customers with no long-term commitments

CHARLOTTE, N.C., February 21, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Duke Energy has proposed a major expansion to its Green Source Advantage (GSA) program, giving customers the option to supplement their power usage with 100% renewable power – and the ability to pair renewable projects with energy storage.

Details for the GSA Choice program were outlined in a filing with the North Carolina Utilities Commission.

“Many of our large business customers seek renewable power sources and are making decarbonization a long-term part of their business plans,” said Lon Huber, Duke Energy’s senior vice president, Pricing and Customers Solutions. “Duke Energy is proud to offer these customers a wide range of options including the ability to increase their hourly use with carbon-free energy in one of the country’s first time-aligned clean-energy programs.”

Duke Energy’s GSA program was launched in 2017, and has been used by customers such as the City of Charlotte, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Duke University. The changes build and expand on that program.

Up to 4,000 megawatts of capacity will be available under the GSA Choice program, which is more than 10 times the capacity now available. It will provide customers a path towards having 24×7 clean energy. It allows large customers to offset their power purchases by securing renewable energy from projects connected to the Duke Energy grid. The customer may count the renewable energy generated to satisfy their sustainability goals.

Among the changes to the program:

Customers can contract for up to 100% of their energy use. Previously, the program’s details only allowed for about 30% of total energy use.Customers can work directly with Duke Energy or independent developers for their long-term purchase of renewable energy.Customers may also combine energy storage with their project – allowing them to align the production of renewable energy with their energy load.Duke Energy is also proposing a new 10-year avoided cost bill credit option in addition to the existing hourly, 2-year and 5-year options.

Clean Energy Impact

Another program being proposed – Clean Energy Impact – is ideal for customers who want to claim a certain percentage of renewable energy through environmental attribute purchases in support of corporate sustainability goals, or for residential customers that would like to support the local renewable energy industry.

The program with feature locally source renewable energy certificates (RECs); month-to-month contracts with no long-term commitments. Clean Energy Impact will be available to residential customers, who can purchase renewable energy to match their energy use at the level of their choosing. It will be ideal for renters, or customers who aren’t able or looking to install solar.

“We’re continuing to fine-tune our renewable energy options for all customers and are looking at programs such as community solar in the future. That will allow customers to directly subscribe to the output of a solar facility,” added Huber.

To learn more about these programs, business customers can visit here, while residential customers can find more information here.

VMware Recognized for Accelerating Business Climate Action

More than 20 years after the company was founded, sustainability has remained a core component of VMware’s DNA.

In recognition of our long-standing commitment to driving a more sustainable future, I couldn’t be more elated to share that VMware has been re-invited to be a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices – one of the world’s leading benchmarks for sustainability leadership – for the third year in a row.

Notably, VMware achieved the fifth-highest score in the Software Industry and ranked in the 99th percentile of all companies that participated in S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment, an annual evaluation of over 10,000 companies’ sustainability practices based on industry-specific and financial sustainability criteria.

In addition to being named a member of the DJSI, VMware was also recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Most Responsible Companies of 2023. Marking the company’s fourth consecutive appearance on this list, VMware was the only company to receive a perfect 100 score for addressing environmental concerns.

At a time when the world is facing such complex and interconnected issues, I am especially proud of VMware’s continued action and advocacy of climate action – and more importantly, our employees’ collective motivation to build a more sustainable, equitable and secure future for all.

Taking a step back to reflect on recent events, COP27 offered a critical reminder of the urgency of our climate crisis and the significant responsibility that businesses have in curbing global greenhouse emissions in the years ahead. In light of those recent discussions, VMware is even more determined to play our part in the global fight against climate change.

That all starts with embedding sustainability into our technology – and in doing so, VMware aims to reduce not only our own environmental impact, but also that of our customers. In the last year alone, we’ve made significant progress in this area through various programs, such as the introduction of a Green Score in Aria Operations, which enables customers to track their decarbonization efforts. In addition, VMware’s Zero Carbon Committed promotes public cloud providers who are committed to achieving 100eving 100% renewable energy-powered data centers or carbon neutrality by 2030 and connects them with VMware customers who have net-zero goals. So far, we have added 30 VMware Cloud Provider partners committed to renewable energy, among the likes of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and more.

While we’re proud of all the progress VMware has made so far in our ESG journey, there is always more we can do. And as we head into the new year, I’m eager to continue advancing our sustainability innovation agenda with even greater rigor, focus and determination.
