AI Tops Density in Predicting Breast Cancer Risk

CHICAGO, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — An image-only artificial intelligence (AI) model for predicting the five-year risk of breast cancer provided stronger and more precise risk stratification than breast density assessment, according to a new study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Senior author Constance D. Lehman, M.D., Ph.D., professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, said traditional methods of assessing a woman’s risk for breast cancer, including age, family history, genetics and breast density, are inadequate.

“Over two million women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and for most, it comes as a complete shock,” she said. “Only 5 to 10% of breast cancer cases are considered hereditary, and breast density alone is a very weak predictor of risk.”

Clairity Breast, the first FDA-authorized image-only AI breast cancer risk model, was trained on 421,499 mammograms from 27 facilities in Europe, South America and the U.S. Using mammograms both from women who developed cancer and women who did not develop cancer over the subsequent five years helped the AI model to learn the patterns and differences in breast tissue that predict cancer risk. The model was calibrated on an independent test set using a deep convolutional neural network to generate five-year risk probabilities.

“The model is able to detect changes in the breast tissue that the human eye can’t see,” Dr. Lehman said. “This is a job that radiologists just can’t perform. It’s a separate task from detection and diagnosis, and it will open a whole new field of medicine, leveraging the power of AI and untapped information in the image.”

The model was applied to a study group of 236,422 bilateral 2D screening mammograms from five U.S. sites and 8,810 from one European site. The mammograms were acquired between 2011 and 2017. Radiologist-reported breast density (dense versus not dense) and five-year cancer outcomes were extracted from medical records and tumor registries, respectively. AI-predicted risks were categorized using National Comprehensive Cancer Network thresholds: average (less than 1.7%), intermediate (1.7-3.0%) and high (greater than 3.0%).

The researchers compared the risk categories using statistical models that account for follow-up time and censoring.

Accounting for breast density, women in the high-risk AI group had more than a fourfold higher cancer incidence than women in the average-risk group (5.9% vs. 1.3%). By contrast, breast density alone showed only modest separation (3.2% for dense vs. 2.7% for non-dense).

“The results of this large-scale analysis demonstrate that AI risk models provide far stronger and more precise risk stratification for five-year cancer prediction than breast density alone,” said first author and presenter Christiane Kuhl, M.D., Ph.D., director, Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at University Hospital RWTH Aachen, in Germany. “Our findings support the use of image-only AI as a complement to traditional markers supporting a more personalized approach to screening.”

The American Cancer Society currently recommends that women at average risk have the option to start annual breast cancer screening with mammography at age 40. However, women under 40 are the fastest-growing group being diagnosed with breast cancer and advanced disease.

“An AI image-based risk score can help us identify high-risk women more accurately than traditional methods and determine who may need screening at an earlier age,” Dr. Lehman said. “We already screen some women in their 30s when they are clearly at high risk based on family history or genetics. In the future, a baseline mammogram at 30 could allow women with a high image-based risk score to join that earlier, more effective screening pathway.”

Breast density legislation enacted in 32 states requires healthcare providers to inform women undergoing a screening mammogram of their breast density.

“We’d like to see women given information on their breast density and their AI image-based risk score,” Dr. Lehman said. “We can do better than just looking at a mammogram and saying, ‘It is dense or not dense’ to inform women of their risk.”

atNorth’s DEN01 Data Center to supply heat to Danish homes in collaboration with Vestforbrænding

The innovative heat reuse initiative will channel excess heat from DEN01 into district heating for Danish households.

BALLERUP, Denmark, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — atNorth, the leading Nordic high-density colocation and built-to-suit datacenter provider, has finalized its agreement with Vestforbrænding, Denmark’s largest waste-to-energy company, to use excess heat from atNorth’s DEN01 data center campus within Vestforbrænding’s district heating network.

DEN01, located in Ballerup, Greater Copenhagen, is a 22.5MW metro site that is due to be operational in Q1 2026. The collaboration with Vestforbrænding will enable warm water, that is a biproduct of energy efficient Direct Liquid Cooling technology, to be used by the district heating network to heat over 8000 homes in the local area from 2028. The process will lower the carbon footprint of the data center and Vestforbrænding by reducing the amount of energy needed to provide local central heating.

Denmark has been an early leader in decarbonization and in 2022 the government announced a target to become net zero by 2045, aiming for a 110% reduction in emissions by 2050. The Danish government is actively phasing out the use of coal in the district heating sector and is supportive of heat recycling initiatives that align to its circular economy principles. The initiative is also core to atNorth’s commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible way and is an integral part of the business’s data center blueprint for the future that embodies responsible data center operations holistically, taking into account sustainable construction, energy efficiency and community engagement.

With many years of experience in district heating and an ambitious District Heating Plan for 2030 well underway, Vestforbrænding is phasing out oil and gas boilers in thousands of households and expanding the district heating network to integrate future energy sources – including surplus heat from data centers.

“For many years, we have talked about surplus heat from data centers being part of the future. Now the future is here. With today’s contract signing, we are showing the way forward for how surplus heat from data centers can reach people’s homes. There has also been talk about sector coupling in the district heating sector – today we demonstrate how this can happen in practice, to the benefit of consumers,” says Steen Neuchs Vedel, CEO of Vestforbrænding.

“As the demand for AI ready digital infrastructure continues to increase, it is imperative that data center companies scale in a responsible way”, says Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO, atNorth. “By actively seeking heat reuse partnerships for our data centers, we can mitigate our environmental impact, benefit the communities in which we operate and help clients decarbonize their IT workloads”.

The news follows the announcement of a collaboration with Wa3rm – a leader in the development of circular and bio-based operations for waste streams – that will  reuse excess heat to grow vegetables close to atNorth’s DEN02 data center in Denmark. Similarly, an agreement with one of Finland’s leading retailers, Kesko Corporation will recycle waste heat from atNorth’s FIN02 data center to heat the neighboring Kesko store.

DESLOC Smart Lock Unveils the World’s First Self-Sustained Perovskite Solar Door Lock, Debuting at CES 2026

DESLOC V150 Plus: The World’s First Self-Sustaining Solar Smart Lock, Powered by a Built-in 4.8″ Industry-Leading Perovskite Solar Panel

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — DESLOC Smart Lock proudly announces the world’s first smart lock powered by a perovskite solar system: the V150 Plus Solar Smart Lock. Designed for typical American suburban porches—bright yet rarely exposed to direct sunlight—and aimed at alleviating homeowners’ concerns about smart lock power consumption, V150 Plus redefines what it means to be truly solar-powered. The product will be showcased at CES 2026.

Traditional solar smart locks have long struggled to deliver true perpetual power. Common crystalline-silicon solar panels cannot charge in low-light conditions, such as shaded porches. As a result, most so-called solar locks remain dependent on battery replacements every few months, frustrating homeowners who value convenience, security, and sustainability.

V150 Plus solves this fundamental problem. Its perovskite solar panel can start charging in very low light—just ≥200 lux, like dim indoor lighting. On a typical day, with about 4,000 lux of light—like cloudy days or shaded porches—it produces enough energy to power the lock all day. This means the lock can work continuously without ever needing a battery change. This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a game-changing innovation that makes a real difference for everyday homes.

The innovation goes beyond the solar panel itself. While most so-called solar locks on the market rely on external polycrystalline panels, the V150 Plus features an industry-first integrated solar design, seamlessly embedding the high-efficiency perovskite module directly into the lock body. Coupled with a proprietary light-sensing energy management algorithm, it dynamically monitors ambient light and battery status, allocating energy for optimal performance at all times. The result is a maintenance-free, eco-friendly smart lock built to last a lifetime.

This breakthrough is perfectly suited for the U.S. market, where more than two-thirds of newly built single-family homes feature porches, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Traditional battery-powered smart locks require frequent maintenance, making them less ideal for households with semi-shaded or covered entrances. The V150 Plus delivers a hands-off, reliable, and truly sustainable solution—giving homeowners uncompromised security and convenience without the burden of constant battery management.

The DESLOC V150 Plus Solar Smart Lock is more than a product; it’s a category-defining innovation. DESLOC will present the V150 Plus at CES 2026, Jan 6–9, Venetian Expo, Booth 52871, Las Vegas, NV, giving visitors a first look at the world’s first low-light solar smart lock. The real story is clear: DESLOC has officially claimed the first place in bringing this revolutionary technology to the world.

APEC CEO Summit emerges as a platform for actionable cooperation

A total of 17,952 media reports covered the event, including 11,772 domestic and 6,180 international stories. Global media outlets praised the summit, describing it as “the most dynamic and innovative CEO Summit in APEC history” and highlighting that “Korea has emerged as a global hub for economic cooperation based on advanced technology.”

Social media responses were equally strong. From October 27 to November 2, mentions of the APEC CEO Summit across major platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook exceeded 300,000, with over 1.1 billion impressions and around 4 million engagements (likes, comments, shares, etc.). These statistics were analyzed by global media monitoring platforms Meltwater and Tubular.

The high level of attention across both traditional media and social platforms demonstrates that the APEC CEO Summit has established itself as a substantial discussion platform that delivers practical outcomes, rather than remaining a ceremonial international event. The summit has been recognized as a starting point for developing actionable cooperative agendas and projects that go beyond a one-off gathering.

In his closing remarks on October 31, KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won stated, “At the APEC CEO Summit Korea 2025 in Gyeongju, global leaders gathered to explore directions for solidarity, cooperation and innovation, and to develop practical solutions. Since APEC is not just a forum for discussion but a platform for action, we will follow through with linked projects to help strengthen global economic resilience and inclusivity, and to promote shared prosperity among member economies.”

Chey presented the 3C action framework as a practical response to the summit’s 3B theme, urging business leaders to take the lead in implementation.

APEC Business Leaders’ 3C Action Framework

1. Close the Gaps: Establish shared principles on digital technologies and financing to narrow the economic and social divides created by AI and digital transformation.

2. Co-create Value: Address challenges like climate, energy and technology through solidarity and collaboration, turning them into new business opportunities.

3. Commit to Tomorrow: Treat AI and carbon neutrality not as burdens but as opportunities for sustainable growth, and advance a long-term, joint roadmap for action.

Following the APEC CEO Summit, participating companies are discussing follow-up collaborations including joint investments in global AI data centers, restructuring semiconductor supply chains and strengthening technology partnerships, proposing new technology demonstration models using Korea as a global testbed, and establishing global CEO-linked investment and innovation channels.

Lee Sung-woo, Head of the APEC CEO Summit Korea Preparatory Headquarters at KCCI stated, “This summit marks a meaningful moment in which a global cooperation platform driven by the private sector has begun operating in earnest,” adding, “KCCI plans to continue follow-up programs — including joint projects, technology cooperation, and expanded investment — in collaboration with APEC member economies, global companies, and industry leaders.”

Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition Recognized with Honors from Harvard’s Honoring Nations Awards

BEARS EARS NATIONAL MONUMENT, Utah, Nov. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition (BEITC) was recognized nationally for excellence by the Harvard Project on Indigenous Governance and Development’s prestigious Honoring Nations Awards. The announcement recognizes BEITC’s groundbreaking leadership in Indigenous stewardship, Inter-Tribal governance and the collaborative management of Bears Ears National Monument.

Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition awarded by Harvard for advancing Indigenous governance and protecting ancestral lands.

Founded by the Hopi Tribe, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Zuni Tribe, and the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, the Coalition was honored for advancing a model of Tribal collaboration, cultural stewardship, and consensus-based decision-making rooted in Traditional Knowledge.

“This award affirms what our elders and leaders have taught us, that Indigenous governance is powerful, effective, and necessary,” said Anthony Sanchez Jr., Head Councilman of the Zuni Tribe and Co-Chair of the BEITC. “Our work at Bears Ears is about responsibility, healing, and protecting the cultural legacy of our Nations for future generations. For the Zuni people, these lands hold the footprints of our ancestors, and it is our duty to care for them with reverence and humility.”

One major milestone considered by the Harvard Project was the 2025 finalization of the Bears Ears Resource Management Plan, the first management plan to implement Tribal–federal collaborative management for a U.S. national monument. The plan, shaped by the Bears Ears Commission and grounded in Traditional Knowledge, affirms the role of Tribal Nations as co-stewards of their ancestral homelands. Through initiatives like youth leadership programs, cultural landscape protection, and educational partnerships, BEITC’s model is already inspiring other Indigenous efforts across the country.

The Honoring Nations award is the premier national recognition of Tribal governance excellence, administered by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center. As an honoree, BEITC joins 142 alumni awardees and receives national recognition.

“This recognition belongs to our entire Coalition, the five Tribes have stood together and continue to lead with vision and care,” said Davina Smith (Diné), Co-Chair of the BEITC. “I’m deeply grateful to our partner organizations, agency partners, and all who have supported our shared mission. Most of all, thank you to the Tribal members, leaders, and knowledge holders of the Hopi, Zuni, Ute Mountain Ute, Ute Indian Tribe, and Navajo Nation. Your prayers, strength, and teachings make this work possible. This is what stewardship can look like when Tribes help shape the future of the lands they’ve cared for since time immemorial.”

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the outstanding programs recognized by the 2025 Honoring Nations awards,” said Charissa Miijessepe-Wilson (Prairie Band Potawatomi/Kickapoo), Director of the BEITC. “Each of these initiatives reflects the strength, innovation, and deep cultural grounding of Tribal governance in action. From language revitalization to food sovereignty, environmental stewardship to intergovernmental partnerships, these projects are powerful examples of Indigenous leadership meeting the moment. We’re honored to be in your company and inspired by your work.”

This year’s High Honors awards recognized the transformative leadership of the Cherokee Nation, whose tribally affiliated medical school is reshaping rural and Tribal healthcare; the Jicarilla Apache Nation, whose water-sharing agreement strengthens ecological stewardship and Tribal sovereignty; and the Lummi Nation, whose Sche’lang’en Village provides a powerful model of healing, reunification, and culturally grounded wrap-around services. We celebrate their achievements and the powerful momentum of Indigenous governance across Indian Country.

Coordinated Care Investments Bring Hope This Holiday Season: Tackling Food Insecurity and Nutrition Gaps in Washington

Coordinated Care has provided over 18 million meals statewide, including medically tailored meals, in addition to the member program Coordinated Care Harvest Bucks

TACOMA, Wash., Nov. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Coordinated Care, a Washington managed care organization and wholly owned subsidiary of Centene Corporation (NYSE: CNC), has achieved a milestone of providing over 18 million meals across Washington since 2020, as part of their strategy to address food insecurity. This ongoing initiative is confirmation of their commitment to increase access to healthy food and comes as millions of Americans face increasing challenges in accessing nutritious meals due to recent disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food insecurity currently affects approximately 47.4 million people nationwide, including 13.8 million children.

Coordinated Care’s One Million Meals campaign began during the COVID-19 pandemic has been exceeding their annual goal year-over-year. Working with our trusted partners who are embedded in their communities and know Washingtonians best, like Second Harvest, Northwest Harvest, Emergency Food Network, Lifelong, Eloise’s Cooking Pot, Mill Creek Food Bank, Farestart and others, has produced these staggering results. Recent Coordinated Care staff volunteer efforts have also contributed, including:

  • packing 5,000 bags for 2nd Harvest’s Bite2Go program in Spokane
  • preparing over 200 medically tailored meals for individuals living with chronic illness at Lifelong in Seattle
  • re-packing over 7,000 lbs. of pears for Emergency Food Network in Lakewood
  • and serving at FareStart’s Guest Chef Night in Seattle, helping to raise over $13,000 to support their culinary job training program.

“Coordinated Care is an incredible example of a partner who we would describe as ‘all-in’ – volunteering their time, sharing generous financial support and promoting impactful programs that lead to healthy outcomes, especially around our nutrition education and self-sufficiency efforts,” said Chris Houglum, philanthropy director at 2nd Harvest.

In addition to the One Million Meals initiative, Coordinated Care developed a program for their Medicaid members, Coordinated Care Harvest Bucksâ„¢. This program helps supplement limited grocery budgets with up to $100 a year, per member in produce prescriptions, redeemable at Safeway grocery stores and in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health. Members receive vouchers and get support from a care coordinator to help navigate resources, use our online tool FindHelp and provide nutritional health education.

“This work is a continuation of Coordinated Care’s commitment since day one to helping those most in need and advancing long-term solutions to hunger and nutrition challenges,” said Coordinated Care President and CEO Beth Johnson. “All of these initiatives demonstrate the value of managed care – going beyond the doctor’s office to address a more holistic approach to healthcare.”

These investments reflect Coordinated Care’s broader mission to transform the health of the communities we serve by addressing whole-person health care needs, such as access to nutritious food and promoting long-term sustainability by integrating food access with healthcare services.
