Innovating for Impact: New HVAC a Beautiful Thing in the Home of Interior Design Celebrity Leanne Ford

We’re helping solve our customers’ big challenges by innovating and delivering solutions that are better for their business—and for the environment.

Project At-a-Glance:

The opportunity: Design and install a comprehensive in-home HVAC system that boosts efficiency and sustainability and vastly improves indoor air quality.

The solutions:

Trane 14 SEER XR14 60000 BTU Single Stage Heat PumpTrane CleanEffects™ Whole House Air CleanerTrane Split System Heat Pump: XV20i Heat PumpTrane Two-Stage Hyperion Communicating Air HandlerComfortLink® II XL1050 Thermostat

Sustainability outcomes: Reduced carbon footprint with an all-electric system.

Interior designer Leanne Ford and her husband Erik found the fixer-upper home of their dreams when they relocated from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh in 2020. “It sat empty for years. I truly felt like it was waiting for us,” Ford said. Four stories tall with 12-foot ceilings, the circa 1900 house was brimming with design potential but needed a complete systems revamp, including the HVAC.

“When starting a new interior design project, cosmetic changes — like picking out paint colors — are the fun part,” Ford said. “But what’s behind the walls, the electrical, plumbing updates, structural check-ins, HVAC upgrades, the not-so-glamorous stuff, those are often not talked about.”

Among the first jobs on the list: Remove the existing radiant heat system. Though Ford says she loves radiant heat systems, especially the elegant styling of turn-of-the-century radiators, the system they found in the house was less than desirable. The existing fixtures were not only not attractive, but they were also non-functional, replete with leaks and mold.

“At the end of the day, the right decision for my family was to modernize our heating and cooling systems,” Ford said. After researching available options, she selected Trane®. Trane installed a complete HVAC system, including a 5-ton variable speed heat pump, humidifiers, a ventilator, and an array of environmental sensors.

Because several family members suffered from allergies, Ford also added a CleanEffects® Whole Home Air Cleaner. 100 times more effective than a standard one-inch air filter, CleanEffects dramatically reduces dust, pollen, mildew, and other asthma and allergy triggers. Ford also added the Trane ComfortLink® XL1050 thermostat, which would allow the family to optimize temperature and humidity levels in different zones of the house in real-time.

Another key feature: the Trane variable speed system, which allows the compressor, outdoor fan and indoor fan to vary their speed with changing outdoor temperatures, increasing comfort in the home. The Trane Home app added a finishing touch of convenience and control, giving the Fords the ability to monitor or adjust their home environment from anywhere at any time.

Ford says she and her family are thrilled with the results. Their newly updated home is not only far more comfortable than it was before the new system, but also more efficient.

But perhaps most important of all are the improvements in indoor air quality, and the added safety those improvements can bring. That’s particularly true of the basement. Once a dank, cramped area filled with old boiler components, ducts and near endless wires and pipes, the lower level is now home to Ford’s studio.

Ford says she is now fully confident that the members of her family can live both happy and healthy lives in their new home. “That peace of mind is everything to me,” she says. “The truth is how you feel in a space is just as important, if not more, than how it looks.”

Canned and Jarred Foods: Increasing Sustainability From Farm to Pantry

Canned and jarred foods, with their long-lasting nutritional value, affordability and packaging, are nourishing for the planet, people and communities in which we live. The way Del Monte Foods sources and packs food increases sustainability from farm to pantry, all the way through to recycle-ready packaging.

At the Farm: “Imperfect” produce is a driver of food waste. Canned and jarred foods salvage fruits and vegetables that are cut the wrong size or shape for the fresh market.

Produce is perishable. Most canned and jarred foods at Del Monte Foods are packed within hours of harvest to lock in nutrients and can last for years.Del Monte Foods has also been a leader in the upcycled food movement and in 2021 became the industry’s first canned vegetable product to be Upcycled Certified by the Upcycled Food Association. Del Monte® Blue Lake® Petite Cut and Blue Lake® Farmhouse Cut Green Beans are made with 100% upcycled and sustainably grown green beans from Wisconsin and Illinois.

In Transit: The majority of produce is grown within 100 miles of the company’s manufacturing facilities, decreasing the distance food needs to travel.

Over 80% of Del Monte Foods’ fruits and vegetables are sourced in the U.S.

At Our Facilities: Dedicated focus on reducing energy, water and waste has resulted in decreased carbon emissions per ton of product produced at facilities.

On Your Wallet: Choosing canned or jarred varieties of some fruits and vegetables can often save money while offering low sodium options and comparable nutrition as fresh or frozen.

In the Pantry: Canned, jarred and frozen foods are convenient, making mealtimes easier and with longer shelf lives they are wasted less often. Fresh foods are more likely to be tossed.

In the Supply Chain: Canned and jarred foods have a longer shelf life and can be used straight from the shelf with no need for chilling or freezing, saving more energy — and more money.

For Food Security: Canned and jarred food stretches food dollars for taxpayers and participants in government programs.

These foods provide year-round nutritional availability and consistent quality for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs and federal food assistance programs. Canned and jarred foods also help provide lower-income families access to important nutrients.

For Increased Nutrition: With one-third of U.S. children either overweight or obese, it’s clear kids need a healthier diet.

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends “all forms” (canned, fresh, frozen, dried and 100% juice) of fruits, vegetables, beans, meats and seafood to make up a healthy meal.

For Recyclability: Steel can be continuously and efficiently recycled. In fact, more steel is recycled each year than paper, plastic, aluminum and glass combined. When steel is recycled, it conserves energy and natural resources.

Whirlpool Corporation Expands “Feel Good Fridge” Program Through Collaboration With HelloFresh and TQL

Whirlpool Corporation is expanding its Feel Good Fridge program by engaging HelloFresh, the world’s leading meal kit company, and Total Quality Logistics (TQL), one of the largest third-party logistics firms in North America.

Launched by Whirlpool Corp. in 2021, the Feel Good Fridge program provides refurbished refrigerators to food pantries and nonprofit organizations across the county, like the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas, to deliver free, fresh food for anyone in need. Starting with a local initiative in the Dallas area late last year, the three companies are now expanding their combined resources and expertise to reach more people in need across the country. Together, they’ll impact 13 cities with Whirlpool Corp. providing 2000 refrigerators which TQL will transport and HelloFresh will help fill with wholesome and fresh ingredients.

“Across the U.S., 44 million people, and one in five children, face hunger,” said Pam Klyn, Whirlpool Corporation’s executive vice president of corporate relations and sustainability. “We launched Feel Good Fridge to fight food insecurity in a sustainable way, and collaborating with HelloFresh and TQL allows us to expand our impact in the communities that need it most.”

In the three years since its launch, the Feel Good Fridge program has donated more than 900 refurbished refrigerators, keeping them out of landfills; delivered more than 250,000 pounds of food, helping avoid waste; and reached more than 25,000 families.

“Increasing the availability and accessibility of fresh produce and ingredients is a key part of HelloFresh’s mission to fight food insecurity,” said Jeff Yorzyk, senior director of sustainability at HelloFresh. “We’re proud to partner with Whirlpool and TQL to help alleviate food insecurity by meeting communities in need where they are.”

“We started Moves that Matter with the goal of aiding nonprofits by taking the complexity and expense of logistics off of their plate,” TQL President Kerry Byrne said. “It is an honor to be a part of this collaborative effort with Whirlpool Corporation and HelloFresh to bring more fresh, nutritious food to communities struggling with food insecurity .”

Feeding America, who has been supplying food for the Feel Good Fridge program since its inception, will continue to provide food, with HelloFresh and TQL providing enhanced support in communities with the greatest need. The program will remain dedicated to food-insecure areas with high concentration of needs.

Current key markets include: Atlanta (133 Feel Good Fridge units), Chicago (29), Dallas (199), Detroit (230), Houston (53), Los Angeles (32), Minneapolis (24), Orlando (35), Phoenix (47), and West Michigan (112). The company has a target of placing 3,000 refrigerators by 2030.

The America’s Climate Leaders of 2024 award is based on a two-step process. First is the application and research phase. Companies could be included on the list by applying online or by having the necessary data publicly available. To be considered for the award, a company must meet the following criteria:

The company is headquartered in the USA.The company had revenue of at least $50 million in 2022.Independent emission reporting with data on Scope 1 and Scope 2 for the years 2020 and 2022.In case a CDP rating is available, the score had to be at least C.Broader environmental record (e.g. no oil exploration, non-GHG pollution, or deforestation).

The second step is the data analysis and scoring phase. For all companies meeting the inclusion criteria, the year-over-year reduction in emissions intensity (compound annual reduction rate) was calculated.

Based on the results of the study, Wesco is ecstatic to be recognized on USA TODAY’s list of America’s Climate Leaders 2024.
