DP World Charts a New Course: From Port Authority to Global Trade Innovator

In a recent interview, Glen Clark, CEO of DP World US and Mexico, and Head of Contract Logistics for the Americas, sat down with Supply Chain World to share insights into the evolving landscape of supply chains and DP World’s strategic response.

In the article, “Building Resiliency,” Clark looks back at his more than 37 years of experience in logistics, operational support, and engineering to frame up the opportunities and challenges facing the supply chain today. He notes that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the essential role of supply chains, prompting companies to prioritize their efficiency and resilience.

“For many companies, it’s been a case of surviving more than thriving,” Clark said. “There have been too many disruptions to list – the pandemic, evolving sustainability requirements, the disruption caused by geopolitical conflict, and issues with canals. These challenges have resulted in operational changes, causing companies to reevaluate and de-risk their supply chain. Aside from circumstantial challenges, the market is rapidly evolving.”

Clark highlighted DP World’s transition from focusing primarily on ports and terminals to becoming a leading smart trade enabler. “We’re on a transitional journey, moving from what I call the economic zone, or in other words, the ports and terminals side of the business, and towards becoming a leading smart trade enabler,” he told Supply Chain World. “Our technology looks at a business from end to end, identifying the most pressing customer needs to then provide effective solutions.”

This shift involves leveraging technology to meet customer needs comprehensively and integrating services through strategic acquisitions. DP World has expanded its footprint to nine countries in the Americas, operating 14 ports and terminals, multiple contract logistics facilities, and opening 17 freight forwarding branches in the last 18 months. Other key highlights from the interview include:

Resilience in the Face of Disruptions: The COVID-19 pandemic, sustainability requirements, geopolitical conflicts, and other disruptions have highlighted the need for companies to prioritize supply chain efficiency and resilience.Shift Towards Nearshoring: The trend towards nearshoring, notably with DP World’s new regional distribution center in the Dominican Republic, aims to smooth the transition of goods and address rapid market changes.Focus on Sustainability, Creativity, and Agility: DP World emphasizes these three areas to navigate challenges and ensure the movement of supply, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050.Sustainable Operations: DP World is actively working towards carbon neutrality by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050, employing automation and other innovative solutions to minimize environmental impact and improve operational efficiency.Leveraging Automation for Sustainability: Automation is used both as an efficiency and sustainability tool, reducing waste and carbon emissions through innovative solutions like optimized packaging.Investment in People: As the supply chain becomes increasingly complex, investing in personnel and skills development is crucial. Clark emphasized the importance of people, processes, and systems, and advocates for attracting talent and fostering a positive company culture that promotes growth and development.Collaboration and Investment for Future Growth: Acknowledging potential economic and geopolitical tensions, DP World plans for 2024 focus on investment, growth, and execution, working closely with customers to plan for disruptions and develop alternative solutions.

These highlights underscore DP World’s strategic pivot towards becoming a comprehensive supply chain solutions provider, emphasizing technology, sustainability, and human capital to navigate and leverage the complexities and opportunities within the global supply chain industry.

Meet Adam Warren, Shaping the Future of Innovation & Representation

Our purpose is what unites us at Henkel North America: Pioneers at heart for the good of generations. Our pioneering spirit is reflective of the diverse backgrounds, experiences and talents of our employees and partners. They dare to make an impact on the world by collaborating to tackle challenges, find solutions and open new perspectives.

Their contributions allow us to deliver products, services and innovations that enrich and improve everyday life. We invite you to “meet” our pioneers in our series, “Pioneers for Good.”

Adam has been a part of the Henkel family and Research & Development (R&D) organization since 2013. He is an inspirational leader that oversees the team responsible for driving innovation and product formulation for Henkel Consumer Brands including all®, Persil®, Purex®, Snuggle®, and Dial®.

From identifying new trends to working with emerging technologies that put Henkel at the forefront of innovation, Adam is dedicated to encouraging his team to take risks in their work. Innovation drives Adam professionally, but he is also committed to paving the way for future generations and pushing for increased representation in leadership.

“I came to Henkel through an acquisition, but I stayed because it’s an amazing place to work and I absolutely love it.” He credits Henkel for providing continuous opportunities to grow and do the work he loves while impacting the daily lives and routines of consumers. “For me it’s always been a passion of mine to improve the lives of consumers and I get to live that passion every day.”

Driving Innovation at the Heart of Henkel

According to Adam, innovation is the fundamental reason his team exists. “We create the future,” is the mantra at the core of his research and development team’s purpose and at the forefront of what inspires their work.

They create the future, armed with consumer trends and research and an intentional pursuit to be bold in thinking about how to reinvent our products and technologies to create something new. There is a unique vulnerability about being bold, it can trigger a fear of failure while being a pillar of success. Failures happen – it’s part of the creative process, but Adam believes that creating an environment that encourages bold creativity and pushing boundaries ensures that the overall process moves toward the success of the team.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

Like his work, Adam is innovative in the ways he supports and advocates to increase representation. Mentorship is one tool to do this. As a former INROADS intern himself, he knows the value of having mentors who invest the time to advise and guide the next generations. “I have had a diverse set of mentors throughout my career for different needs from developing technical skills, navigating workplace culture, and shaping a career path.” And he pays it forward through being a mentor and sponsoring Inroads interns in R&D.

He always finds a way to say ‘yes’ to opportunities to give back and lend his voice to conversations tied to his core values of community, culture, and DEI. Adam understands the importance of being able to physically and culturally identify with leaders and is part of the work to increase equitable representation.

I believe in the fact that representation matters. When people can see a version of themselves on leadership panels and speaking engagements, it helps them to better visualize their career opportunities.

Adam Warren, Vice President of Product Development for Henkel Consumer Brands North America

Adam believes leaders need to bring their own personal brand of authenticity to the workplace and to their teams. His personal brand of authenticity is anchored in integrity and leading with conviction. It is not only a governing principle in his life but how he intentionally shows up for his team and work at Henkel.

Yum! Brands Recognized for Climate Action and Transparency

Yum! Brands

Yum! is best known for its RED (relevant, easy and distinctive) brands – KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and The Habit Burger Grill – but recent accolades in the sustainability space might make consumers see it as green.

This month, CDP, a global organization that runs a leading sustainability disclosure system, released its rankings, and Yum!’s Climate Change score improved to an A-, and the company matched its previous Water Security score with an A-. All of Yum!’s CDP scores, including its Forest assessment, achieved scores of a B or higher.

The company also made the S&P Global’s Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America list for the seventh consecutive year and was selected for the S&P’s Sustainability Yearbook, which aims to distinguish companies that have demonstrated strengths in corporate sustainability. In December, Newsweek named Yum! as one of America’s Most Responsible Companies 2024, giving it the lead spot among restaurant companies.

“I’m proud that Yum! continues to be recognized by CDP and others for the continuous improvements in our sustainability agenda,” said Yum! Chief Sustainability Officer & Vice President of Global Government Affairs Jon Hixson. “This recognition reflects the great work of the team and leaders within our global system who drive results in an ever-evolving space.”

Yum!’s citizenship and sustainability efforts are guided by the business’s Recipe for Good Growth strategy, which focuses on its people, food and planet. Central to Yum!’s planet pillar is its climate goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its restaurant and supply chain by nearly 50% by 2030. Since having near-term science-based targets (SBTs) approved in 2021, Yum! and its brands have taken a multipronged approach by identifying opportunities with restaurants and suppliers. This includes investing in renewables and energy efficiencies in restaurants and establishing key pilots to support responsible agricultural practices for core proteins of beef, dairy and poultry.

Yum! is also updating governance structures to oversee process and data across the organization to comply with new laws, like the European Union’s Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) and Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Likewise, the company is actively working to assess its impact on biodiversity, which includes conducting a biodiversity risk assessment and evaluating the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance among other disclosures.

Marathon Petroleum Trucks and Trains Transition to Using Renewable Diesel in La Basin

Marathon Petroleum’s Vinvale and East Hynes fleets in California’s Los Angeles Basin have made a significant step toward reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner future by transitioning both fleets entirely to renewable diesel. In 2023, two Marathon Petroleum Transport and Rail (T&R) fleets and two locomotives at the Marathon Petroleum Los Angeles refinery, which are supported by T&R, switched from using traditional diesel fuel to renewable diesel.

How we did it

In 2021, Marathon Petroleum began transitioning its ARCO retail sites to renewable diesel. The terminals started replacing CARB diesel – a specific grade of diesel fuel required by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), with renewable diesel. The Marathon Petroleum fleets refuel their trucks at our load racks and have access to renewable diesel because we are supplying it to our customers. Now, 35 trucks are operating on renewable diesel in the Los Angeles area. In 2023, the rail team began fueling the locomotives at a 50-50 mixture with regular diesel and renewable diesel before completely transitioning to 100% renewable diesel.

“At first, drivers asked lots of questions about renewable diesel and if it would have some of the negative effects on the operations of the trucks like biodiesel did in the past,” said Timothy Sweeney, Transport Maintenance Supervisor. “We assured them that this was different. Since we have switched, the drivers haven’t seen any decrease in power, performance or operations.”

Why it matters

Renewable diesel is an alternative to traditional diesel fuel. Renewable diesel is made from a variety of renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oil, animal fats and waste cooking oils. It is processed to be chemically the same as traditional diesel and can be used to operate any traditional diesel engine without modifications.
