The Institute for Sustainable Communities and Tides Foundation Establish Climate Justice Fund

WASHINGTON, February 21, 2023 /3BL Media/ – The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), the Tides Foundation and Wells Fargo are coming together to launch a climate justice fund to create more equitable access to clean and affordable energy and improve climate resiliency in historically excluded and divested communities.

ISC will launch a new initiative – “Dismantling Energy Inequity in Communities of Color” (DEICC) – expanding the organization’s focus on energy inequity in communities of color through the fund established with a $2.85 million grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation. To ensure philanthropic resources reach communities, ISC is serving as a partner and intermediary to the resources provided by Tides Foundation and Wells Fargo.

“The most transformative and sustainable solutions to address climate inequities are developed and led by local leaders who know their community best,” said Sonia Joshi, director of U.S. Programs at ISC. “What is often missing is the technical capacity/support and financial resources to move from ideas to action.”

ISC will create a national cohort across 10 U.S. cities, uplifting the knowledge and expertise of Black-, Brown- and Indigenous-led community-based organizations to develop weather-resilient, solar-powered community centers, known as resilience hubs. These resilience hubs will serve as gathering places for community members in times of joy – with support through educational and social programs – and in times of climate crisis, including flooding, and power outages, as cooling centers in the summer and heat shelters in the winter.

The organizations and locations that will be represented within the DEICC project are:

Coalition for Environment, Equity and Resilience (Houston, TX)Community Members for Environmental Justice (Minneapolis, MN)East Oakland Collective (Oakland, CA)Garfield Park Community Council (Chicago, IL)Neighborhood Housing Services Southeast Florida (Miami, FL)Nos Quedamos (Bronx, NY)Pacoima Beautiful (Los Angeles, CA)Partnership for Southern Equity (Atlanta, GA)Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation (Porcupine, SD)Unlimited Potential (Phoenix, AZ)

“Wells Fargo is committed to building community resilience and addressing the impacts of climate change, particularly in underserved communities,” said Robyn Luhning, chief sustainability officer at Wells Fargo. “Funding this community-led effort from the Tides Foundation and the Institute for Sustainable Communities is part of our work to support the transition to a resilient, equitable and sustainable economy.”

Partner organizations in this initiative will become part of the ISC’s National Climate Leaders of Color Network and engage in technical assistance and peer learning opportunities at local, regional, topical, and national levels.

Spotlight: Women Elevating Others

Originally published in Winter 2023 Elevating Women Magazine

Leading By Experience

Meet Nike Anani, the woman helping families bridge the generation gap.

As a family member of Millennials or Gen Zers, you may at times find yourself worried about whether or not they are prepared to manage their financial futures.

While research shows younger generations are engaged in their wealth, many lack the tools to invest effectively. In fact, recent surveys reveal only one in four Gen Zers understand the stock market1, and only 37% of Millennials feel knowledgeable about investing at all2.

While every family has its own dynamics and should not be stereotyped, generational divides (communication styles, values, perspectives) often make it difficult for older family members to impart knowledge and empower their younger loved ones to lead financially successful lives. This challenge may be further complicated for children of wealthy families, as the success of the family legacy is often largely dependent on the older generation’s ability to equip their children to manage the many complexities of wealth.

Nike Anani knows firsthand about the importance of empowering the next generation. As the daughter of an entrepreneur, her personal experience as a Millennial successor has provided her with a unique perspective on the challenges rising generations often experience as they step into wealth ownership. Through her work as an award-winning family business consultant, speaker and author, Nike has dedicated her career towards helping families bridge the gap between generations.

Drawing from her personal experiences, Nike expounds on four ways families can work together to empower the rising generations to own their wealth.

Have Dialogues; Not Monologues

Rising gens appreciate their parents’ desire to impart wisdom and experience onto them. However, when it comes to communicating their insights, the older gen often thinks they’re doing so effectively, but from a rising gen’s perspective they’re often not. As a next gen, we want to be spoken with, not at. We want to be part of a two-way dialogue where we have the space to ask questions, gain additional insights and offer feedback. Ultimately, this can help us better understand the older generation’s perspective, including the ‘why’ behind some of their ideals and decisions. Too often, the parental dynamic becomes the default, preventing everyone from being heard. With Millennials and Gen Zers this is especially important. We want to have a voice in the matter, and most importantly, feel confident that prior generations care about what we are saying.

The book “The Quest For Legitimacy” by Jamie Weiner offers some great insights on how to encourage the younger generation to proactively communicate, explaining how family leaders are like giants in the eyes of the rising gens, making them difficult to approach. It’s helpful as the older generation to openly share your struggles, your mistakes, your failures, your anxieties, so that you can be humanized. This can help the rising gen feel more comfortable coming to you and saying, ‘I really messed up, I made this mistake.’ And in turn this gives you the opportunity to say, ‘I have been there before. I understand,’ and ‘this is what we can we learn from this and move forward.’ Sharing struggles can be challenging for those who want to protect their family from the issues and trials of life and keep them in a perfect cocoon. Parents do the rising gen a disservice when doing this because it’s really through the trials, the failures and the mistakes, that the next gen has an opportunity to learn and develop a growth mindset and grit.

Respect Generational Differences

It’s important for family members of all ages to understand and respect that different generations hold different belief systems. Each grew up with different experiences and factors that helped form their perspective. In my experience, many of my elders started their careers in environments that encouraged (and at times demanded) them to work around-the-clock. Today, they proudly describe themselves as ‘workaholics’ and judge younger generations who desire work-life balance. To me and my peers, it’s more about working smarter, not harder. It’s not that we want to work less, or lack appreciation for the dedication it takes to succeed — we just want to be more strategic about how we use our time in order to leave room for our personal lives. Many of us have watched the older generation sacrifice their mental and emotional well-being in the dogged and constant pursuit of success. As witness to this, we often do not want the same for ourselves. We believe work-life balance is a component of success — not something that must be sacrificed in its pursuit.

For example, I’m of a strong view — which is in sharp contrast of my father’s — that I don’t necessarily need to be in the field every day to add value. I can also be impactful from the sidelines as a strategic advisor, board member, serving on a committee, chairing the family council, and still significantly add value. I will then still have the time (and energy) to devote to my personal life. Because ultimately, I don’t want to feel obligated to our family business; I want to feel a sense of gratitude toward the opportunity of being integral to it.

Rather than allowing generational differences to polarize conversations, avoid judgement and respect that each generation has a unique perspective that’s been derived from their life experiences. Doing so will help multi-generational families find common ground.

Have Empathy

Many rising gens are intimidated by their parents’ success. Some struggle with what is commonly known as imposter syndrome, asking themselves ‘Did I earn this or am I here because of my last name?’ Overcoming this struggle requires an inner journey of getting to know oneself and developing deep conviction around what one brings to the table. It is important for older generations to have empathy for the psycho- emotional dimensions of the successor growing up around a prominent, storied, successful individual.

Personally, I found that I had to develop inner strength to challenge my dad, who was a prominent figure in both our community and industry. In my culture, challenging older figures is not appreciated. The ‘daddy-daughter’ dynamic caused me to default to doing as I was told and I often felt disempowered. My father’s leadership style and strengths differed from mine: for instance he was very deeply involved in every detail of the business and tended to micromanage operations. He knew everyone from the COO to the custodian. I wanted to lead differently: I didn’t have to be my dad 2.0 to be effective. To become confident in my approach, I had to get very clear about the value I was bringing to the table given my professional experiences and character strengths. I had to be at peace with the fact that I could embrace work-life balance and still make an impact on the business by creating a collaborative environment, empowering team members and being more strategic. This enabled us to move away from the ‘daddy-daughter’ dynamic and to a ‘partner-partner’ relationship.

As the daughter of a business owner, it was also difficult for me to feel as if I earned the title of a successor leader. Particularly when all the relationships I’ve inherited, all the boards I’ve served on, all the companies we’ve invested in, all the suppliers, the customers — they still see me as the daughter. There was one particular board that I found extremely intimidating. I was the only woman, and the youngest by at least 20 years. But the Chair from time to time would stop and say, ‘Nike, do you have something to contribute here?’ ‘Nike, I’d love to hear what you have to say.’ That left a big impression on me and encouraged me to find my voice. Having empathy for the next gen’s struggle to find their identity and taking steps to reduce self-doubt can build their confidence in their ability to lead.

Be Open-Minded

The next generation often plays an internal tug of war between the ‘me’ and the ‘we.’ While the desire to see your children follow in your footsteps is understandable, consider your children’s struggle with finding their place in the world. Recent data suggests that many rising gens often want to pursue a different path than their parents, particularly when a family business is involved. Some of us might want to utilize the family’s platform or resources differently — whether it be financial, social, political, or intellectual — to accomplish our dreams and build a new (and often very different) legacy.

Encouraging a child’s individual gifts and talents, and being flexible when it comes to how they want to be involved in the family enterprise (if at all) isn’t always easy. But, it is important to remember that ultimately the goal in any family legacy is engagement from the next gen — whether they follow your lead or forge a new path entirely. Being open-minded and supportive of individual aspirations can help families reach that goal.

I think about the family dynamic like a sports team. We all play our different roles: some will be the attacker, some will be the defender, some will be on the bench waiting to be subbed in, some will be the referee — but we are all collectively working toward a common purpose. Some children may be fully involved and are active managers of the business, while some have their own pursuits and are only owners. All generations should appreciate the different roles, responsibilities and skillsets that are brought to the table.

Editor’s Note: I am thrilled to share that Nike Anani will be officially joining The Northern Trust Institute this February. I am confident her unique perspective and expertise will be invaluable in amplifying the voice of rising generations and empowering them to become successful stewards of family wealth.

Basketball Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Joins No Time to Wait Campaign to Raise Awareness of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) and its Symptoms

Originally published on Bristol Myers Squibb News & Perspectives

PRINCETON, N.J. & NEW YORK, February 21, 2023 /3BL Media/ — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is teaming up with Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer to raise awareness of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and its symptoms as part of the No Time to Wait campaign. In support of the campaign, Abdul-Jabbar will share his experience with AFib, including what led to his diagnosis, and encourage others to speak to a healthcare professional if they are having symptoms. Most common symptoms of AFib include irregular heartbeat, heart racing, chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue and light-headedness.1

“When I first started to experience symptoms like shortness of breath and light-headedness, I dismissed them until they reached a point where I could no longer ignore them and I ended up in the hospital where I was diagnosed with AFib,” Abdul-Jabbar said. “I’ve joined the No Time to Wait campaign with Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer because I want my experience to help others understand the symptoms of AFib. Health is nothing to play around with. I hope my story can help motivate others to speak with a healthcare professional if they are experiencing symptoms.”

Approximately 9.5 million people in the U.S. are projected to have AFib in 2023; however, many people remain undiagnosed, dismissing their symptoms because they can come and go and can vary.1,2 Because AFib increases the risk of stroke by about five times, it is important for individuals to seek medical attention if they are experiencing these symptoms.3 Only a healthcare professional can determine whether symptoms indicate AFib or another condition.

“In my experience, I have seen many patients ignore or dismiss their symptoms, potentially delaying diagnosis and treatment,” said Andrea Russo, M.D., cardiologist and academic chief in the division of cardiology and director of cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmia services at Cooper University Health System in Camden, N.J. “Because AFib can lead to serious consequences, including increasing the risk of stroke, it’s critical individuals are empowered to speak with a healthcare professional about any symptoms they may have. No symptom or concern is too small or insignificant.”

“Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer are committed to supporting patient communities and our partnership with Kareem, alongside both professional and patient advocacy organizations, on No Time to Wait is one way we are acting on this long-term commitment,” said Tom Garner, Head of U.S. Cardiovascular and Established Brands, Bristol Myers Squibb. “By educating on the common symptoms of AFib, we believe we can help people better understand the disease and encourage important and timely conversations with a healthcare professional.”

People can visit www.NoTimetoWait.com to learn more about Abdul-Jabbar’s diagnosis journey, as well as common AFib symptoms and how to prepare for a medical appointment.

About the No Time to Wait Campaign

The Bristol Myers Squibb-Pfizer Alliance launched the No Time to Wait campaign to raise awareness of symptoms of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)/pulmonary embolism (PE) in 2020. Seeking medical attention early may help reduce the chance of AFib leading to, or DVT/PE becoming, something more serious. AFib, the most common irregular heartbeat, increases the risk for stroke by approximately five times. DVT is a condition where the blood forms clots, which could travel to your lungs and lead to a PE – and can be deadly. To learn more about AFib and DVT/PE, including the associated symptoms and how to prepare for a healthcare appointment, visit www.NoTimetoWait.com.

About the Bristol Myers Squibb-Pfizer Collaboration

The Bristol Myers Squibb-Pfizer Alliance (the Alliance) is committed to driving education and awareness about atrial fibrillation and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE). With long-standing cardiovascular leadership, global scale and expertise in this field, the Alliance strives to implement global, research-driven approaches to illuminate and address the unmet needs around strokes related to non-valvular atrial fibrillation, which are often fatal or debilitating. Through collaborations with non-profit organizations, the Alliance aims to provide patients, healthcare professionals and decision makers with the information they need to understand and take appropriate action on risk factors associated with stroke and other cardiovascular conditions.

CVX Signs MoU With Egypt on Methane Management

CAIRO, February 21, 2023 /3BL Media/ – Chevron New Ventures PTE. LTD. (“Chevron”) and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MOPMR) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to share best practices and expertise related to the reduction of methane emissions.

The MoU, witnessed by Clay Neff, president of Chevron International Exploration and Production and H.E. the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek El Molla, builds on the Sharm El Sheikh Oil & Gas Methane Reduction Roadmap that was announced by El Molla during Decarbonization Day at COP 27 in November 2022. It is aligned with Egypt’s membership in the oil and gas track of the Global Methane Pledge.

“Decarbonization is a core element of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy. Due to its significant global warming potential, reducing methane emissions is key to supporting positive climate action, “said H.E. Eng. Tarek El Molla.

“Therefore, we are prioritizing the reduction of methane emissions from Egypt’s oil and gas sector, in line with Egypt’s membership in the Global Methane Pledge. Building on the success of COP27 Decarbonization Day, we will collaborate with our strategic partners like Chevron to further drive emissions reduction and reduce the carbon footprint of our hydrocarbon resources,” the Minister added.

The MoU includes methane and decarbonization study tours and workshops for MOPMR employees at Chevron facilities in the US and other locations, to build awareness of methane control technologies, measurement practices and projects to effectively reduce carbon emissions.

“Chevron believes that reducing the carbon intensity of our industry is an important step to address climate change and collaboration is imperative. Since last year we have been working with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources on an agreement related to developing and strengthening best practices on methane abatement, said Neff.

“Together we recognize the importance of programs which will support Ministry employees to expand the necessary skills and knowledge to advance a methane management and ultimately a carbon reduction strategy in Egypt’s energy sector.”

Chevron’s ambition is to be a global leader in methane emissions performance, and the company is taking action to meet that aim. Chevron’s upstream methane intensity has been reduced by 50% since 2016.

Chevron’s history in Egypt dates to 1937 and today, it is present in all sectors of the value chain; upstream, midstream and downstream.

Innovation challenges spur our best and brightest to think outside the box and solve real problems.

Through our Keysight Innovation Challenge this year, I was inspired to see the clever and impactful designs that our six finalist teams devised to address climate change. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and their dedication was heartening.

But then I went down the internet rabbit hole and had a shocking realization. My search was triggered by one of our contestants, Martyna Iwanczyk from the Warsaw University of Technology, who said, “In lectures, we only learn about stuff, but this is the first time we can build something ourselves.” A couple of the other students made similar comments.

GD Employee + Entrepreneur: Meet Lee Glasgow, Designer and CNC Woodworker

Originally published on GoDaddy Life

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you currently do at GoDaddy?

In my personal life, I am a father of 4 girls and video and board game enthusiast. I have worked at GoDaddy for over 16 years, now, and it’s truly been such a great place to work. I have had many roles, here, including: Production Designer, Front End Developer, and Template Team Manager. Currently, I am a Senior UX Engineer on the Design Foundations team, where I help development teams achieve their design goals through code. I love the team I am on and the work I do.

Outside of work, you have a couple of side hustles. Would you mind sharing more about them and how they came to be?

From the moment I was able to hold a pencil, I was drawing or doodling. My dad is an artist and was an art teacher for 25 years. He instilled in me a want to work with my hands and be creative.

That desire led me to take a woodshop class in the 7th grade. I loved it so much that I took it every year after, until graduating high school. I have always enjoyed making and building things with my hands, which has led me to my side hustles.

Outside of GoDaddy, I currently have 2 different side hustles. One is an Etsy shop, where I sell digital and physical posters, wooden flags and other items. The other is an Etsy/Woocommerce shop where I sell items I carve on my CNC.

As mentioned, I truly enjoy video games. One of my favorites is Destiny 2. In the game, you can earn certain rewards, called seals. Each seal has a set of difficult tasks associated with it. Once you have achieved those tasks, you are awarded a game seal and title associated with it. You can wear that title above your character and everyone in the game can see all that you have achieved. When I was trying to figure out what my niche was for making items with my CNC, the idea came to me of bringing those seals into the real world. Something tangible you can put on your wall as a reminder of your hard work within the game. I went to work translating each seal into something I could cut with my CNC. Through trial and error, I went through many prototypes before getting to a final product that I am happy with. I now offer almost 40 life-sized carved seals and 6 different hardwood catchall trays. I am looking to add more variety in the future!

What are your biggest goals for your business, in the new year?

I want to start converting customers over from Etsy to my website where I don’t have additional fees and can have more control over my products and services!

How has GoDaddy assisted you build out your company?

I use GoDaddy Managed WordPress along with WooCommerce and the Go WordPress theme for my website caydeswoodshop.com. Those are really good tools to get a website up and running quickly and has helped me immensely.

What’s your motto or personal mantra?

Always keep improving, learning and growing. Trial and error are just stepping stones to greatness. I am always searching for ways to do things better and that thirst for learning has helped me improve the quality of the items in which I sell.
