Cannabix Technologies Files Provisional Patent Application for BCU-Enabled Point-of-Care Marijuana Breath Testing

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cannabix Technologies Inc. (CSE: BLO) (OTCID: BLOZF) (Frankfurt: 8CT) (the “Company” or “Cannabix”), a developer of marijuana and alcohol breath testing technologies, announces that it has filed a provisional patent application in the United States covering a novel rapid point-of-care (“POCT”) marijuana breath test method designed to detect delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, from breath samples.

The provisional patent application covers new testing methods under development that combine the Company’s proprietary Breath Collection Unit (BCU) and Breath Cartridge (BC) technologies with lateral flow (LF) rapid test platforms and custom-designed components optimized for point-of-care use. The portable BCU is designed to control, collect and concentrate standardized breath samples and efficiently transfer breath analytes into a workflow compatible with screening and analysis technologies.  Safety advocates, employers, and industry stakeholders are increasingly seeking cost-effective, rapid point-of-care marijuana screening solutions that can be deployed using established drug-testing workflows, while offering the unique advantage of assessing recent cannabis use through breath samples.

In recent months, Company scientists have advanced research and development efforts to pair its BCU and Breath Cartridge with next-generation lateral flow assay platforms and custom-designed POCT components. The approach combines the BCU’s ability to efficiently capture THC-containing breath aerosols using air-volume control and pressure-assisted concentration onto its proprietary Breath Cartridge, particularly during the period immediately following cannabis consumption, addressing a central challenge in rapid THC detection. By presenting the lateral flow assay with a concentrated, standardized sample rather than an untreated specimen, the BCU and Breath Cartridge is designed to help address the sensitivity limitations associated with detecting THC at the point of collection. The combined approach is being developed with the goal of enabling a cost effective, rapid point-of-care THC breath screening test (a “Rapid Breath Test Kit“) capable of delivering results within minutes from a breath sample.

The proposed POCT workflow is designed to provide a rapid on-site screening result from the initial BCU collection. If the screening result is positive and evidentiary confirmation is required, the BCU can then be used to collect a confirmation sample under chain-of-custody procedures using the Company’s established Marijuana Breath Test (MBT) process. The confirmation sample is analyzed using a validated LC-MS laboratory method, which has been published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology and is currently in use with clients. Importantly, the establishment of the MBT represents a technological foundation underpinning the Company’s efforts to develop a breath-based point-of-care THC screening test. This proposed approach is intended to combine the speed and convenience of on-site screening with access to a confirmatory laboratory result when required.

The performance of Cannabix’s POCT approach depends on the integrated operation of the BCU, Breath Cartridge and pre-concentration methods—not on any single commercially available test component. This integrated platform provides the foundation for deploying rapid marijuana breath screening in practical, real-world settings. The proposed Rapid Breath Test Kit remains in the early stages of development and will require further technical advancements, including enhanced analytical sensitivity, optimization of sample collection and recovery methods, and the development of a fully integrated testing workflow.

The provisional patent application builds on Cannabix’s proprietary breath-sampling and sample-preparation intellectual property. The development of a practical and cost-effective Rapid Breath Test Kit reflects Cannabix’s ongoing commitment to advancing innovative point-of-care breath testing solutions for real-world applications.
